/ [ORP] Joust near Canterbury, England.

Plotnik
The notice had been posted throughout:
    Hear Ye.
    The Right Honourable
    Plotnik von Liechenstein
Earl of Chilham the Mallet of Dover
    announces the

    Earl's Joust
    to commence
    1 December 1459

until the feast of Saint Noël
    on the grounds of
    Chilham Castle

    on the
    River Stour

Details to follow. Please start assembling your 4-person teams
Teams were forming. Preparations were well underway.

The Jousting Guild were copying their rules for distribution, and voting among themselves who would be Judge of the Match.

Squires were being hired by new riders. Coats of Arms and personal crests were being painted or sewn into liveries and shields.

The estates of the von Liechensteins was quite active, with Lady Anyamariee or Lord Plotnik rushing about the countryside, or stopping to answer letters upon travel desks that were always near. The most pressing detail was the amount of the entrance fee, and the size of the prize purse. And the security of the purse, due to the size.

Jewbeard wrote:

RULES OF THE JOUSE

1) Honor and Chivalry are most important. Cheaters will be disqualified - and thrown to the tender mercies of the Ymps.

2) All are welcome to prove themselves. Differences of opinion based on war, breeding, or simple feuds will be resolved in the lists, or not at all.

3) Individuals will joust for their own sakes, and they may announce any persons, places, or deities in whose honour they ride.

ROUNDS
- There will be several days of jousting (depending on how many riders there are). Every rider will ride 3 times the first day.

- After the first day, the riders with the best records of Win-Loss-Draw will advance to the next day. (The goal is to cut the field neatly in half for each new round. We'll do our best to keep it even).

- We will try to pair jousters against competitors with similar abilities [Str/Int stats]. In later rounds, this may not be possible. All riders acknowledge that the tournament organizers make a good-faith effort to keep the tournament fair, staking the organizers' own personal honour on it.

- In case there is not an even number of competitors, the organizers will ask for "guest" riders, not eligible to win the tourney. These will be well-matched, and suited to provide drama to the tournament. [They will also be given identical stats to the competing jousters.]

Terms/Definitions/Other
Each faceoff between a pair of jousters is called a "Lance." They make 3 passes at each other, called "tilts".

Points
The goal is to strike your opponent as precisely as possible, and to gain points by it. Those who are more cunning [higher Intel] are more likely to gain points.

Points Chart:
    Miss = 0 pts.
    Shield hit = 1 pt.
    Body blow = 2 pt.
    Helm strike = 3 pts.
"Expert Strike" Unhorses Opponent = 4 pts.
Damage
This is not a sport to be entered lightly. Many are injured - some are killed! Depending on your strength, you may seriously injure your opponent, or even blast him clean off his horse! (Unhorsing your opponent in this manner will result in a bonus point for you).

Remember - you are not immortal! There is a limit to how much damage you can take. [OOC: If you take 9 or more damage during one joust, you are considered INJURED, and should RP as such. You are not required to miss your next Lance, but you can if you think that matches your character's ability to get beat up.]

Damage Chart:
    Brush: 0 dmg.
    Glance: 1 dmg.
    Firm strike: 2 dmg.
    Bruising hit: 3 dmg.
Crushing blow!: 4 damage, Unhorse opponent, +1 point.

Note that you can be unhorsed by either an expert strike, or a crushing blow of damage.

Ladyjennet
The invitation from the Earl of Chilham had been an unexpected, but welcome, surprise. After discussing it with those who would be her teammates, it was decided that this diversion was sorely needed and would be an excellent opportunity to take part in a tournament, the likes of which had become increasingly rare in recent days. They had taken the road from London towards the River Stour and Kent. Jennet had seen the original plans of Chilham while doing her research for the College of Heraldry. A fine place, though Jennet had heard that Lord Plotnik and Lady Anya had done much to improve the structure. She hoped that their hosts would be so kind as to offer the grand tour when all was said and done in the lists.

They arrived on the appointed day in grand style, royal banners streaming in the bright sunlight. The lions and lilies on the family coat of arms that adorned the carriages had been painted with true gold so that they seemed to positively leap from the background in a sparkling display. The horses that the team would ride in the joust had been sent ahead with the grooms at a leisurely pace and allowed to rest, lest they be tired for the first days of tilting. A wagon behind the procession carried the lances and armor, attended by the pages who would arm and armor the combatants.

A quick word from Rhys to the guards at the gate and the party were let in and led to the appropriate place where a clerk was busily signing up the participants.

“Name?” he said, without looking up.

“Would you like the short version or the long version, my good man?” Jennet said in her distinctively melodic voice that always seemed to carry an air of authority and yet was ever disarmingly pleasant.

The clerk’s head snapped up so quickly that Jennet feared his neck might break. He sputtered. “Your Royal Highness,”he muttered while trying to rise and bow, which made for something of a comical scene. A few quills that went flying off the table were harmed in the process of his flourish.*

She waved her hand at him to retake his seat, and the clerk did so, though his book was now in disarray. “Now then, I believe that you will need some information for our entry?” She tried to be encouraging.

“Yes, Your Highness. Who shall be riding as your champion in the lists?”

Jennet thought a moment, confusion showing in her eyes before she understood. “Oh, no, my good man. I shall be jousting in the lists myself." She slowly peeled her riding gloves off one finger at a time while the clerk blinked at her.

“But, Your Highness, it is most irregular for a princess to r…”

He was cut short by an amused smirk from Rhys and an annoyed glare from Amelia, both of whom were standing slightly behind and to the side of their lord and lady. It was not clear which caught the man’s attention first.

“I…ah…see, then, Your Highness. Well, then, might I have your name and associated titles as well as a depiction of the coat of arms with which you will ride?

Jennet sighed. She always hated reciting the whole thing, as if it were an index of who she was. “Her Royal Highness, Princess Jennet, Princess of England, Duchess of Anglesey, Marchioness of Flint, Lady Companion of the Garter, Knight of the Crown, Grand Cross of the Order of the English Lion, Baronetess of Holywell, and most recently Deaconess of Holywell,” she chuckled as she rattled off the listing and watched the clerk scribble furiously. “You don’t have to cover all of that every time I’m announced,” she smiled and saw the clerk breathe a sigh of relief. “I shall carry my own personal coat of arms, now that I have one,” she laughed again at something of a private joke and glanced at her husband to see his reaction. “Amelia, if you would be so kind.”

Amelia nodded and stepped forward with a scroll in hand, unrolling it to reveal an intricately drawn depiction of the Princess’ coat of arms, which the clerk accepted gladly, delighted that he would not have to draw the tiny hawthorn flowers himself.

“Only one thing more,” he said, checking off his small list, “For whom shall you ride?”

Jennet leaned close and whispered the name to the clerk, whose eyebrows shot up and made him look mildly stunned. She only smiled pleasantly in response.

“I…uh…very well, Your Highness. It shall all be properly recorded and I shall send for Lord Plotnik and Lady Anya as soon as possible.

Jennet nodded in acknowledgment and stepped back so that her husband could also register. She hoped that Chilham would contain a comfortable chair to rest her aching bum and a tub where she could refresh herself.

*No actual quills were harmed in the writing of this post.

Chilham. What a charming location for a joust. The village couldn't be smaller, and still be a village. One inn. One pub. One road in. There will not be many staying in the village, just the first few lucky arrivals at the inn, after which all others will be turned away to their master's side. The luckier few would be invited to stay at the castle. A camp master is coordinating arrivals who have their own camp tents, forming an orderly tent village near the lists. Some will choose the comforts still to be found from the handful of friars remaining who still keep the tombs and shrines in the museum-city of Canterbury, or Sevenoaks. Meanwhile, the poorest of the merchants will spend their nights partying down by the river or sleeping in The Weald. Or a ditch.

From the village, a short walk to The Castle crosses well-manicured lawns up to a hill. There on the hilltop is a Norman keep. Unusual, in that it is has more than four sides, with a rectangular additional structure. From The Castle, you can see west across density of The Weald, south almost into the Romney Marsh, and northwest to the spires of Canterbury. On a clear day, the larger structures of Dover even may be discerned over the many intervening valleys.

The ground floor is the public receiving area. The first floor hosts a great hall for dining and soirees. The second floor is the private apartments of Lord and Lady Chilham and their guests. The rooftop is a spectacular sitting garden, dominated by Anyamariee's medicinal herbs, and dotted by too many experimental benches and chairs from Plotnik's workshop. Along one wall, a covered viewing stand is set for invalids and special guests of the family, to see the sport unfold below.

And that is exactly what is happening, with tents going up, horses and trains arriving. More banners than Chilham had seen in over 1200 years - flew on every field on every hillside. The Joust was forming.
Plotnik
"My Lords, My Ladies, and the rest of you depressingly sober lot:

"We are expecting eight brave souls who have made their intentions known, that they should meet on the lists starting tomorrow to compete in a Joust! Would the participants, including any who have not yet announced their courage, please proceed to the tent near the archway, to register their arms.

"Know you all that these are those you will see upon the field:
Lady Jennet, Princess of England
Lord Barnaby Braeden de Holland, Earl of Pembroke, Lord Warden of Sherwood Forest
Lord Kenrich Steward Tudor, Earl of Nottingham
Lord H.Bear, Baron of Bickleigh
The Honourable Thomas_Church, Councilor of Sussex
Sir Obidiah Eaves, Hedge Knight
Sir Blades
And for some strange reason, I've decided to risk my own neck, too.

"Who else among you is foolhardy enough to test my skill? I've spent more of the last year on a ship, than on a horse. And for the rest of you, I've heard a rumour that some vendor claiming to sell Rat-on-a-Stick is actually selling squirrel. Please, caveat emptor, and for shame on you hooligans. The fun will begin as soon as we are registered. And wassail is being served all day in Saint Mary's, just the other side of the town square from here.

"Anyamariee? ...where's my wife? Anyamariee, what have I forgotten to say?

"Non nobis, Domine, non nobis, sed nomini tuo da gloriam! Amen.
“Not for us, Lord, not for us, but in the name of your glory. Amen.”
Thomas_church
He had tried to rest his horse most of the day as he walked beside his chestnut brown horse. He known to ride alot in his spare time, but when he had lived with his uncle in cornwall, he had gotten to learn how to ride a horse and some lessons about how to take care of one. So when he had bought Honeybee from a merchant in town and heard about a joust, though he had never jousted before in his life, he had sent a letter to join the competition.

As he followed the road in he saw many people gathering for the festivites. Seeing a nice spot by the woods to pitch his tent he led his horse over to drop off his equipment and then headed for the clerk's desk. As he arrived he could notice a woman speaking with the clerk with another man beside her. She seems familar he thought, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. As he was trying to figure out he heard the clerk beside the two call him up in a agitated voice.

Name ? The clerk asked glaring at the young man

Thomas Church he replied happily. He was glad that he could get out of his mayor's office and away for the council for a few days to have a little fun before having to return to his dull paperwork.

The clerk looked up at him wondering if he was going to add anything to his name, but seeing Thomas look around he shook his head in frustration and moved to his next question Title you ride under and coat of arms?

Ah overcourse, I will be riding under Thomas Church, no need to mention the whole councilor things, tell you the truth it is getting a little dull for me with all the talk of economics. As for the coat of arms, turns out I was able to find my family's old coat of arms. Thomas unrolled the scroll with his coat of arms, which he had founded in the Hastings libary which had fallen in disrepair over the years.

The clerk nodded and motioned his hand for Thomas to move along. Thomas smiled at the clerk and walked off. He went back to his campsite and after a hour or two finished putting up his tent and started a fire. After moving things around outside of his tent he smiled at his little home away from home. He patted his horse on its head and went back into town to see all the things going on.

Occ: sorry about the website name at the bottom, but it was the only one that didn't say my real family's name on the bottom of the crest.

Penelope_rose
The wind kissed Penelope's face as the horse galloped toward its destination, the corner edge of her blue cloak whipped against her leg, the bulk of the fabric caught between the flesh of the horse and her leg. A strong pair of arms held on to Penelope, the gloved hands held on firmly to the reins. Tiny wisps of hair that framed her face broke loose but the bulk of her hair was intricately braided and to ensure it wouldn't slap the man behind her, was tucked within her cloak.

"I can't wait for you to meet Lord Plotnik," Penelope murmured, the wind carrying her words to the man behind her and then sail off into the wind. "He was my mentor after I left my mother's house and is one of my dearest friends. Through thick and thin, Lord Plotnik has always been there ... even when we violently disagree on things. And I hold him dear to my heart because he always seems to know when he has crossed the line and apologizes." Penelope turned her head to look at her escort and smiled, showing him how happy she was that he came with her to this event.

The castle came into view as the horse continued but slowed as the rider reined in the horse to a canter. Penelope's fingers gently pressed against the man's arms as they took in the view of the countryside.

"I am glad you are with me, Hamish," Penelope murmured. "This should be very exciting!"

Faheud
King Faheud made a point of leading a troop of his finest men to the great joust. It was a pleasure to come to the joust sponsored by the former Sussex Count who had nominated him for his first peerage.

On arriving at the castle gates in full jousting armor, the King announced, "Pray tell His Excellency Lord Plotnik that His Majesty Faheud has arrived for the great joust. Where may I quarter my company?"

Ghostwriter
The Princess Heir had ridden Hessel, her fresian to Chilham, following the directions she had been given, to go watch a joust. Princess Ghostwriter arrived and accepting the hand from the guard who had escorted her she slid from her horse gracefully, smoothing her red skirts as her feet felt the ground beneath them. Uncovering her head by pushing the hood of her cloak back Ghostwriter looked round and saw much movement, many faces, and feeling a little unsure turned to the guard.

Any idea where we should look for the King first, do you think?
Ghostwriter asked, her voice calm. Looking round Ghostwriter hoped to watch those that took to the field, wondering what tent she might find the King who had invited her to attend.
