Drestakil
Drestakil glanced back at Michaelangelo and Ladygina standing. 'This must not be,' he thought and said, "I think it would be better if you come with us. I really don't want us to get split apart again. Too many have already died this night and you two must not be in that number. Besides, I'm afraid Pliny is about to tire of carrying Ignatius Casimir much further. Do either of you know of a room we can put him in till he comes around?"

He did not say that Ladygina looked like she was ready to pass out and Michaelangelo looked as if he could also use a rest. Drestakil wanted to get them all in one room so defense would be easier. If they could find a room with only one entrance, at most two, and blockade one of those, it would be possible for two of the three men to stand watch over Casimir till he woke. The other could rest along with Ladygina. What Drest desperately wanted to know was exactly how many invaders Casimir had sent against them. He was pretty sure Casimir was arrogant enough to tell them, thinking there was nothing they could do.

Privately, only in his innermost, private thoughts, did he admit to himself that he was very worried about Kenna and Viceroy. He had seen nothing of them for quite a while now and neither had Pliny, Ladygina, or Michaelangelo. Yes, he was becoming very, very worried.

As she stood there, feeling helpless and exhausted, Lady Gina saw Drest and Pliny coming back toward them. Relief washed over her and she listened to him say,

She looked at him, sadness in her eyes, and said, "The only room I know of is the room Angela and I were in with the killer. There was only one door and the window. But they're still in there, the killer and Angela, and I don't think I could bear being locked in that room with him again, even though he is dead. I still hear his voice in my head, feel his breath on my skin, and his lips upon mine, and it makes my skin crawl..."
Looking at him pleadingly, she said, "Surely one of the other rooms we've passed is safe...."

Drestakil
Drestakil looked at Pliny, then at Michael, then said, "Lead us to it, Gina. I just want to get out of the open. We're all tired...we've all been through a lot and I would REALLY like to know what is going on with Viceroy and Kenna."

She had to go back in there??? He was in there. How was she going to stand it in there?? She couldn't....
But as she looked at Drestakil waiting for her to lead them to the room she was held captive in, she knew that at least Drest would be in there with her. He wouldn't let anything happen to them........ She trusted him with her life.
She looked at him again, and nodding her head, turned back toward the room she never wanted to enter again. If this night ever ended, and they all came out of it alive, she would order this room to be sealed up and never opened again.
Leading them down 2 halls, she saw it. The door seemed to glow blood red, even though she knew that was just her imagination. It was a normal wooden door. But beyond that door was nothing normal. There were two dead bodies. One a killer who had been intent on torturing, and then killing, her. And one...... she looked back at Michael.... One was a loyal servant, and good friend....
Stepping up to the door, she looked at Drest and said,
"This is it."

Drestakil
'She looked at Drest and said, "This is it."' A thought flashed through Drestakil's mind as he reached for the latch, 'I'm getting too old for this." He motioned Gina to move down the hall with Michael standing in front of her. Pliny was still carrying his burden. Drest stood to one side and slowly lifted the latch, then flung the door inward.

Pliny
Pliny had followed the pair in silence, perfectly happy to obey for now as his exhaustion started to hit him again. He slid the man from his shoulder, allowing him to fall to the ground. He undid the bonds holding the mand's hands and feet, retying them with both sets of knots securing the man's limbs intertwined, so he was forced to lie in an arc, his hands held close to his feet. Testing the knots again, he turned away, walking over to Drest and Gina. "What now?" He asked, the tiredness clear in his posture and voice.
Ladygina
She stood behind Michael as Drest had motioned her to do. She felt like a child, and was somewhat ashamed that she was acting so....timid and skittish. This was not her normal demeanor. But then again, this was not a normal situation for her. She was happy to let Drestakil be in charge of her at this time.
She watched him open the door, and she could feel her heart beating just a bit faster. She wasn't sure what it was that frightened her so, because she knew the man was dead. He couldn't hurt her anymore. But still......

He opened his eyes and all he could see was the particles of dirt and debris and where the wall met the ground. He blinked as if waking from a dream, but it was merely the nightmare of his life. He was still alive. He had heard her voice and he wanted more than anything to go back, even if he'd not seen her. Never once had he stopped aching for the things he'd lost.

He could hear voices, a man, another man, and a woman.

He laid deadly still. He could not move because he was restrained. They had taken him prisoner.

Weak minded fools, he thought.

He closed his eyes and waited patiently, listening to their every word.

She stood there, looking through the doorway into the room where death lay. She didn't think she could enter that room again. She looked at Drest, waiting for him to decide if they would enter the room or not. She couldn't go in alone. She would have to go in with Drest....of that she was sure.

Drestakil
Drestakil lifted the latch and threw the door inward. The light of an early morning came weakly through the window. Dust motes floated in the sunlight and his eyes followed a beam down to where it touched the body of Angela, laying still on the floor. Her face looked so serene, until you saw the blood-soaked front of her dress. His eyes moved to the other body in the room...Drak. Drest walked over to him and looked into the unseeing eyes string at the ceiling. He could hear the others moving into the room behind him.

He looked around, "Pliny, if you would, bring Casimir in here. I doubt very much it will make a difference, but maybe if he sees what has been wrought here he might be more willing to answer us." Drest walked over to Gina and put his arm around her shoulders.

"It will be all right. We'll come out of this," and led her to a bench against the wall.

Viceroy wrote:
"It is Jah's will that I pay for my sins in my dedication. In the past, I was a man with a passion to do what needed to be done for the King... but... at times, we made mistakes. Some horrible mistakes that would keep me up for days. For that, I will always be hunted cause I was once the hunter in the battle for what we thought was right for England," he said holding her hand.

He said so little in such a time that she needed to know more. She just wasn't sure if it was his way of protecting her or if he couldn't even recall what had happened to cause this. It was possible that he had been ordered to do so many bad things that it was impossible for him to tell the difference between this man or any of the others.

What if there were more men who hated her family? What if they were coming now? Where would they find help? Will this ever end?

All these thoughts were spinning, she couldn't think about anything except the fear that now controlled her. Always before someone could protect her, or she was strong enough to protect herself. Her world had changed.

"The others, father. I left Gina in the house with your servants, your brother ... Pliny.. the boy.. I no longer even see Kjolmar.... " she looked around as if noticing for the first time that they were alone and everything had grown silent.

What if something had happened to them all... what if they were not as lucky?

"We must go together and look for them.. now"
she suddenly felt anxious and impatient.

She had walked to the door, and was just standing there, looking inside. She could not go in there. She heard Drest, as if he were far away, speaking to the young man with them......Pliny she thought Drest had called him......
Drestakil wrote:

He was taking charge. Good. He would know what to do. Then she felt him put his arm around her, and realized that he had come to lead her inside. She flinched, not wanting to enter that damned room. But she did not have the energy to fight against Drest leading her inside. He led her to a bench, and said,
Drestakil wrote:
"It will be all right. We'll come out of this."

She just looked at him. She wanted to believe him. But......so much had happened, so much that they didn't even know about...how could they survive this?? She knew they were Mortimers....knew they were strong. But how many men had come to take revenge upon their family??
She simply said,
"Drest, if we do not find Kenna and Viceroy soon, I fear we will never see them again. I have a bad feeling... The fire....Kenna had gone to the stables to check on the fire.....what if....." She let the sentence trail off, not wanting to finish it.

Drestakil
Drestakil couldn't tell her that he had a sinking feeling himself. He had seen one of those killers casually kill two servants, one after the other. Viceroy and Kenna couldn't be in the stables...they were ashes now.

Drest sheathed his sword and sat down on the bench beside Ladygina. He was tired now...he could feel a deep weariness settling in his bones. How long had it been? How long since this mess had begun...since he'd killed the first of Casimir's men...the watcher...the one with no tongue?

He looked at Michael. He looked as tired as Drest did. Pliny had gone into the hall to bring Casimir in the room. Michael was still standing just inside the door, clearly unable to cross the room to Angela's body.

'Such a waste,' thought Drestakil. Maybe Casimir had good reason for what he was doing, but Drest just couldn't believe that whatever had been done to him in the past gave him ANY right to do what he was doing now.

She watched as Drest sat down beside her. He looked tired, weary. She spoke softly, "Cousin, this night...we have lost many, of this I am sure. I have heard the screams outside. I can see outside the window that our stables are nothing more than a charred pile of ashes. I only hope the horses and stablemen got out alive. I cannot understand what Geo could have done that was so bad that this man Ignatius wants to extole this sort of revenge. And where is he??? And Kenna??? I don't know how much longer I can keep my sanity. I honestly feel it unravelling as I sit here. I killed a man for Jah's sake! I've never been able to squash a bug and I ran a sword through a man's heart. What evil has settled upon our family this night Drest??"

Blake turned as he reached the outer wall of the castle. With some of the blood on him, he wrote on the wall.

I'll Be Back. Death lives here

He laughed evilly and ran into cover disappearing...
