> [RP] Mortimer Castle

Mallorie
Mai rose as the gentleman walked in, she half expected him to walk on past for he had obviously been travelling and she was sure he had better things to do than..

She curtseyed when he addressed her. Thank you, My Lord, but I think I am being d- attended too. She winced silently, "dealt with" sounded ominous. Lady, please let it not be an omen. I am here to see Lady Gina Mortimer, at her request, she added hastily.

Further explanation was unnecessary as Lady Gina herself appeared. Mai curtseyed once more and smiled spontaneously at the gracious greeting. Why thank you My Lady. It is good to see you too and it is I who should thank you for responding so fast to my letter... she trailed off, aware that she was being scrutinised, but that was all right for she was looking just as closely at her hostess and wondering...

With his back to the door, he didn't see Ladygina come in at first. The girl's eyes moved to fix in another direction after telling him she was "being attended to", so Drest turned. As the girl said her piece, Drestakil walked over to Ladygina and said, "It is good to see you again, Cousin. I hope you are feeling better? I am looking forward to giving away the bride and was beginning to think I'd be too late." His lips brushed the offered hand. "Is it possible we now have 3 beautiful women in the family?"

Smiling warmly at Drest, she said, "Aye, Cousin, I'm wonderful! Nervous about the wedding but wonderful all the same. Thank you so much for honoring me, and my parents, by giving me away. I know they would appreciate it." She felt a wave of sadness flush over her at the thought of her parents not being here for the happiest day of their daughter's life, but she shook it off. This was a happy time! Finally, the Mortimers had happiness!
She looked back at Drest and said,

"I see you've noticed the resemblance as well? Drestakil Mortimer, allow me to introduce you to the newest member of the Mortimer family, or so it would seem...Maitane. Maitane, this is Cousin Drest. He is Geo's brother. Drest, Maitane is the daughter of my Aunt Phillipa." She looked at Maitane, smiling, and said, "Well, at least that is what we believe. She has come here today so we may prove this."

"Hmmm...I see," said Drestakil. He turned to Maitane, lifted her hand and bowed, "It is definitely my pleasure to make your acquaintance. Whether you are a Mortimer or not, if you need any help in the future, do not hesitate to let me know."

A thought occurred to him and he reached up, drew his sword from its sheath and presented it to Maitane hilt-first, "Have you ever seen this before?" He pointed to the Mortimer Family crest worked into the hilt.

Maitane looked from one to the other. It seemed incredible that these nobles were so open to considering her claim seriously. She smiled shyly as Lady Gina explained to the gentleman. So he is of my family... well Lady willing, he is. Instinctively Mai felt drawn to these people and their courteousness to a stranger, a claimant on their name. It is lovely to be able to offer my congratulations ond best wishes on the occasion of your marriage, My Lady in person, she said, smiling as she curtseyed.

When he took her hand and bowed over it to her as if she were a lady, she stilled like a wild animal trapped for a second, then forced herself to relax and accept the gesture gracefully. She nodded her head in acknowledgement as she curtseyed again. My thanks My Lord Drestakil, I shall remember your kindness and chivalry, she bit her lip uncertainly for already the thought that her claim might not be recognised caused a pang of pain, whatever the outcome of this matter. Tentatively she put out her hand and traced the crest. Aye, My Lord, she nodded gravely. I have seen this before, in a place far away called Castle Fraser. She looked to Lady Gina, where I was given a pendant and told it belonged to my mother. Lady Gina has it now, and it is why I am here. She stopped talking and waited, trying not to let the butterflies escape, to know her fate.

Looking from Mai to Drest, she says, "Aye, I have the pendant Maitane sent me Cousin, and it is indeed the Mortimer Crest." She pulled out Maitane's pendant and her own, and showed them to Drest. "See? 'Tis no mistaking, this is the family crest. No one other than a Mortimer would have this, lest it be stolen, and I don't figure that is the case here. Besides," she looked back at Maitane, and laughed slightly, "'tis a bit uncanny the resemblance she has to my sister, Cikaya, and, I must say, Cikaya looks as if she were pulled straight from the backside of our father!" She stopped herself, remembering that Maitane did not really know them yet, and she should remember her manners so as not to scare the poor girl off!

Mai looked at the two pendants in Gina's hand. They were as near as identical as could be. Father's backside? She couldn't help the burst of laughter than erupted as Gina spoke. Oh. I have never heard that one! I must remember it in future.

She looked at them both and said earnestly, her eyes clear and sincere. I know so very little, but I will answer any questions I can truthfully. I am more bemused by this than I can tell you, I know not what to think much of the time for my life has changes so rapidly. She lifted her head and looked at them in turn. One thing I do know, just from this meeting alone, if the Mortimer family accept my claim I will count myself most fortunate indeed.

"Well from what I read of your letter, you never knew your real Mother, correct? And if that is so, then I don't know really what questions we could have that you could answer. For myself, I never knew my Aunt Phillipa, so any answer you gave me, I could not discount anyways." She looked at Drest and said, "Cousin, do you have any questions for Maitane?"

Drestakil
"Hmmmm," he said thoughtfully to himself, then spoke up, "have you ever heard the names Jarlath or Ignatius Casimir?" Drestakil looked deep into Maitane's eyes, waiting for an answer. He was hoping to be able to tell if she spoke the truth, but knew that in this world there were those who could lie with perfectly innocent expressions. This girl, however, didn't seem like one of those. Any lie she told would show in her whole demeanor. Just from her reaction as soon as she heard the names, he knew she had never come against either of them.

"Never mind, Maitane. It's obvious you've never heard of them. Welcome to the family." He turned to Gina and said, "Cousin, if you don't mind, I'm going to the kitchen to find something to eat and then I'm going to sleep for a couple of days." He bowed himself out of the room and tried to find his way to the kitchen. He could never figure out where anything was in this place.

As mystified by his quick decision as she had been by the strange names, Mai watched Dresta leave. She looked at Gina confusion apparent in her face. It seems Lord Drestakil has travelled far.. the rising inflection at the end of the phrase showed this was not a statement, but a question.

Should I know these people he spoke of? She didn't understand the undercurrents , but something had definitely changed in the atmosphere with that utterance.

As Gina heard Drest ask Mai if she had ever heard of.... them she watched his face as he changed his mind, and went off to the kitchen to have a bite to eat. She looked at Mai and saw the confusion on her face. "Yes, he's traveled quite a bit to get here, but ..... he is weary for another reason. The names he mentioned.....Ignatius is the man who sought revenge on my family....it was a horrible night that he came to this very castle. He had several men come to kill every Mortimer they could find. We were lucky not to lose any of our family that night, although, we did lose several servants, one very close to Geo, and there were many deaths on the other side as well...." She left off the part where she had killed the monster that killed Angela. "I'm not sure how far the news of that night traveled, but I would have though everyone knew of the terror that happened here that night. We've just recently rebuilt the stables, and made repairs to the castle itself. And Jarlath......he claimed to be a Mortimer, but it turns out he was working with Ignatius. He disappeared, and we know not what happened to him.

Mai shuddered as the story unfolded. Oh, by the Lady I had no idea , thanks be to Her that you are safe. No wonder Lord Drestakil had qualms. Feeling that she should have perhaps known, she explained I know little about the great events of England. or the lives of the Great... she smiled wryly.. I think though that might be about to change.

"'Twas a harrowing night indeed......... But that is beyond us now. Only happy times for the Mortimers now! So, do you have any questions for me that might help you in this quest to find out if we are truly related? Though, to be quite honest, if you could see my sister standing beside you in a mirror...you would have no question."
She didn't reveal, just yet, that she had not spoken to her sister in so long that she could not remember the last time....

--Cloaked
As the woman slid - nearly falling - off of her horse, she quietly thanked the darkness surrounding her that no one was near to see. Her feet touched the ground and almost buckled out from under her. She paused, pulling the hood of the cloak down and making sure she was covered well by the dusty old thing before reaching into the saddle bag for a flask. She took a long drink before removing a sizable bag from the horse, then working carefully to arrange it over her shoulder.

She nodded to the horse, then took a step forward, almost stumbling and falling. Rolling her eyes at herself, she reminded herself that it was just a short walk down the road to the castle. She took another, longer, drink from her flask and tried again, with a bit more success. "One foot, two foot, one foot, two foot...", she silently remarked to herself with each step forward.

It took some time, but she finally made it to her goal. Looking around, she noticed that no one seemed to be outside, and she thanked her miserable luck for that. "Almosht donne!" Quickly covering her mouth with the back of the hand still holding the flask, she was shocked at her slip. She needed to be quiet, to get to the doors, leave the heavy pack she carried, and slip away unseen - and unheard. That was the plan she had come up with - not wanting any of the castle's residents to see her, especially while drunk. She nearly giggled at that thought, since she couldn't really remember the last time she wasn't drinking. She took another swig and continued on towards the door, repeating her mantra to herself with every step forward.

She looked at the heavy doors, dropping herself to the ground to leave the pack she had been carrying. The glow in the windows suggested that there were people about, it would be warm inside, the beds would be soft, and the thought of a steamy bath and good food made her want to stay. But no, though she couldn't remember why she was on the road she was on, she knew that there would be trouble if she were seen. She took another drink, trying to drown out the thoughts. She opened the pack, looking for the slip of paper that she had written the names on. Looking at it, she squinted hard at the coarse, over-sized, child-like letters that spelled out "Kenna & baby", nodded, then closed the pack, tucking the paper into the opening so it would be seen, but would not blow away. She found a pebble near the door, then slowly got to her feet, stumbling away to put some distance between herself and the heavy door.

Steadying herself, she turned back, threw the stone at the door, and then ran towards the gate as best as she could - stumbling and weaving along the way. She smiled, thinking of Kenna's reaction to the gifts she'd left, but then her eyes grew wide with the realization that her precious flask was left in the bag as well. And it was too late to turn around; The deed was done, now it was time to get back to her horse and gain some more distance from this place before she could find a place to sleep for the night.

Edit-OOC:
This woman is completely clueless. She doesn't know if Kenna's at the castle, if the baby was born, or anything. Gifts in the bag: Rocking Horse, a bracelet (image will be revealed later), and quite accidently left behind: a well-worn, half full flask of rum. Have fun with it!
Ladygina
As she was asking Mai if she had any questions she heard a knock at the door.
A house servant came into the room with them carrying a pack of some sort. Taking it from her, she saw a note: "Kenna & baby". How nice! Someone had left a gift for the new Mortimer! But there was no name of the gift bearer. She looked at the servant and said,
"Who left this? Is the person still here?" The servant said, "No, M'Lady, 'twas just the pack left on the stoop. No one was about that I could see."
She looked again at the note. She looked at Mai, and said, "How odd. Why would someone leave a gift but not stay to see that it was received? Well, no worries. Kenna will find out soon enough and be able to thank them properly. I am tempted to open the pack and see what is inside, but I'll leave that to Mommy." She handed the pack back to the servant and said, 'Please take this upstairs to Lady Kenna's suite and leave it for her." She watched as the woman went upstairs, then turned back to Mai, and said, "Now, where were we? Ah yes, do you have any questions about your new family?"
