Mallorie
Mai looked at the package curiously. Who was it from? Who was it too? Mommy?

Gina repeated her question. Questions? Did she have any questions questions about her new family? Mai opened her mouth to answer then closed it again. Where on earth should she start? With Gina? With Drestakil?

Thinking of him, reminded her that he had gone in search of the kitchen and food. Food... drink! Mai suddenly realised that what she wanted at the moment, more than anything else, was a cup of tea.

Lady Gina... she looked at her shyly, I have so many questions that I don't know where to begin. but may I crave your indulgence... I could murder a cup of tea!

At Maitane's request for a cup of tea, Lady Gina palms her forehead and says, "Aye! Of course, where are my manners? Come with me to the dining hall. There should be a nice pot on the hearth already." She led Maitane out of the room and down the hall to the dining hall....

Mai stirred honey into her tea, there was sugar but she was feeling overwhelmed enough already without partaking of that unbelievably luxurious commodity. She wanted something familiar... and comforting.

The Mortimers dining room with its vaulted ceiling was bigger than the whole of her cottage or so it seemed. The oaken furniture polished so it gleamed, decoration and quiet servants waiting unobtrusively for orders were more signs of the family's prestige and wealth. Where will I fit in amongst all this, she wondered apprehensively.

She took a sip, and felt a lessening of the tension that had her wound as tight as a bow string. That is so good, she complimented her hostess. They drank in silence for a time. Lady Gina obviously wishing to give Mai space Do I look as terrified as I feel? I wonder. to compose herself. Before the silence could get too uncomfortable, Mai raised her eyes to look at Gina. There are so many things I don't know and feel I ought to, that it is hard to know where to start.

She looked around the room and gestured helplessly. All of this is overwhelming, returning her gaze to Gina, but the most overwhelming thing is your kindness and the way you have accepted me. It is enough that you have. If I try to learn all I need to know in one go I am likely to end up with a brain fever, she grinned slightly, and forget the lot. If it pleases you I would rather learn as I go on, both about the family, its history and where I fit into it. She paused and added with a tinge of sadness in her voice, for nearly eighteen years I have lived in ignorance. Even my parents names were unknown to me. And now, I find myself blessed with two families, both of which have accepted me with warmth and generosity of spirit. I am content with that, the rest will come with time.

However..
she bit her lip slightly and one hand lifted to fiddle uncertainly with a stray curl, I don't want to disgrace you with my ignorance so please let me know what is expected of me, those things I need to know so I don't disgrace the family name unwittingly. Having confessed her uncertainties she felt as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. Flashing Gina a quick smile she added. I may be ignorant, but I promise you I am a quick study and an eager pupil.

Smiling at Mai softly, trying to make her feel less overwhelmed, she said, "Mai, honestly, all we expect from you is to be yourself. Respect the Mortimer name. Be true to your family, and true to yourself. As for disgracing our family, or the name, really, none of us are perfect and we don't expect you to be. If you belch in public, we're not going to draw and quarter you!"

Drestakil
"Do I smell tea?" Drest said as he came into the room. "This means people are here...ah...you two still at it? I overheard part of your conversation as I came down the hall." Drestakil threw himself into a chair nearby and looked in vain for a servant.

"Why is it that all Gina has to do is think of something and there's a servant there to do it...she doesn't even have to SAY anything...just THINK 'I'd like some tea' and there will be fifteen different kinds of tea sitting on a sideboard of whatever room she happens to walk through next and it will be hot and steaming. I, however, would die of thirst if I didn't carry water with me." A servant approaches bearing a tray with a cup of tea on it. Drestakil looks at the tea, then gives the servant a withering look, "You would also think that by NOW the servants in this place would know I don't-drink-tea." His expression softens, "Would you be so kind as to bring me a tankard of ale?"

"As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, I overheard part of your conversation. Young lady, you are now a part of this family. The only thing we expect from you is to be happy with who you are. Don't try to be someone you aren't...and don't hesitate to ask for help from anyone in the family if you ever need it"

As Drest came into the room, she grinned, and couldn't help but laugh at his rant. "Cousin, you do so go on." She looked at Mai with a gleam in her eye and said, almost conspiratorially, "He acts like such an ogre, but on the inside, he's a true teddy bear. Don't let the gruff exterior fool you."
She watched as the servant looked at Drest with wide eyes, mumbling apologies, and make off for the kitchen to get him that ale. "Drest, you know you scare them to death with your admonishments! Be nice!" She laughed and shook her head.
"See Mai? Not all of us act "refined and proper", she giggled.

Barely resisting the impulse to bob a curtsey, glad she was sitting ,which made it impossible any way, Mai beamed in relief. Well then, I am mightily relieved to hear that! Now curiosity getting the better of her, she remembered the parcel with its enigmatic inscription. Who are Kenna and baby? She poured herself another cup of tea and nibbled at a piece of gingerbread as she waited.

"Aahh! Kenna and baby. Now THAT'S an easy one. Kenna is my second cousin. And "baby" is her precious little newborn angel. I tell you, it's so confusing trying to figure out which cousin is which number and who's linked how, but when we get time, we'll go over the family tree."

Mai smiled and nodded, thinking of her cousin Amelia who was pregnant. Amelia's child would be born in a land far North of her Scottish birthplace and Mai wondered if she would see the baby before it could walk. It would be good to meet Kenna's and her child whilst the babe will still, well a babe in arms. How lovely. I look forward to meeting them. Children are such a blessing, aren't they? She blushed, well so people say, I've never had one, she amended hastily. Do you.. she was going to ask if Lady Gina had children, then remembered that Gina was only just preparing to married have any children, Lord Dres? she finished.

Drestakil
Drestakil looked thoughtful...then sad, "That's a hard question to answer. I MAY have a son, but if so, he's disappeared. Gina knows of Pliny. He fought by my side that night in the castle. After that he disappeared and I haven't heard from him since. He SAID he was my son, but never proved it and so I say again...I MAY have a son, but I'm not sure."

Drest thought back over how many members of the family had disappeared in the last few years. Of course, there was Viceroy, who had been "discovered" by Drestakil himself. Sindaia had disappeared and despite his best efforts over half the kingdom, she was still missing. There were others, if he could make his tired memory recall them.

As Drest spoke of Pliny, and that fateful night, Gina got a faraway look in her eyes, and nodded her head. Silent for but a moment, she shook her head and looked at Drest, and said, "I've not heard anything from Pliny myself. I do wish he would come back. We have a few other members of our family who have....disappeared or have passed on. We do hope we can reconnect with those that are alive again soon. But," she smiled at Maitane, "we are excited to welcome you into our family Maitane, and will do whatever we can to make you feel welcome, and at home, for that is what this is...your home."

Drestakil
"Amen," said Drestakil as he pulled himself back to the present. "The more the merrier. We need more people in this family. And, if they happen to be pretty girls, who am I to say No? The last thing in the world I want people to say about me is that I was inconsiderate of others." Drest looked at his empty tankard, then looked around for a servant. Gina and Maitane were still drinking tea...he shuddered. A servant came through the door and Drest got his attention. "Could you please refill this for me?" "Certainly, M'Lord," and the servant took the empty tankard and filled it with tea, turned and presented it to Drest, "Here you are, Sir. Would you like cream or sugar?" Drestakil looked bleakly at the servant, "What I would LIKE is to ram that tankard up ---"....'No,' Drest thought to himself, 'there were Ladies present.' "If you would be so kind as to refill the tankard with ale, I would be most appreciative."

Mai nodded, I have not, until recently, had family to consider my own, other than Mair, of course, and... I try not to think of a time when she will not be in my life. She shivered slightly, she has always taught me that we carry our loved ones with us, here and here. She touched her heart and head lightly as she spoke. It is a comfort, but... I cannot imagine that there will not be a feeling of loss when.. I am sorry to hear of your losses and I pray The Lady brings home those lost.

She smiled warmly, somewhat relieved, as she realised that they were trying to lighten the mood. It is always nice to be called pretty, and Mai dipped her head, shyly acknowledging Drest's implied compliment as she thanked Gina for the warm welcome. I find Castle Mortimer very imposing and yet, I feel its warmth, your warmth and welcome. She laughed softly, when I get over my awe, I may even find it homely.

Mai fought hard not to chuckle out loud at the look on Drest's face when he was handed a tankard of tea. Smilingly she thanked Gina for the reassurance. I feel very welcome already Lady Gina, Cousin Gina, I mean. Looking at Drest, a glint of amusement in her eye she added, I, um, think perhaps you do not visit Mortimer Castle often, or perhaps that servant is new and does not know your preferences well yet?

Putting her hand up to her mouth and coughing to cover the giggle that was escaping her at the servant pouring tea in Drest's tankard, Gina admonishes Drest playfully, "Cousin, come now, what have I told you about roaring at the servants? They mean well. And, as Mai has said, you do NOT spend enough time here at home for them all to get to know you well enough to know you abhor tea."
She looked back at Mai and said, "Cousin, I do feel as if your arrival is the start of something wonderful for this family. Who knows? If Jah brought you to us, maybe he'll bring our lost ones home."

Drestakil
"Hmmm...I thought I practically lived here. Come to think of it, don't I have a room or something around this place?" Drestakil accepted the tankard of ale from the servant with a nod of thanks. "I don't 'roar' at the servants. I merely make my wishes known in a somewhat raised tone of voice." He ignored the expression on the face of the servant who brought him the ale, an expression that seemed to evince a large amount of disbelief, to say the least. He drank from the tankard, then said, "Yes, it is good to find more of the family. That way, when I journey back east, Gina won't be alone. She will have someone besides me and Dranoel to keep her company. You'll enjoy it here, Maitane. It's a really nice place to stay...a place where everybody knows your name." Did Gina choke on her tea? Surely not.
