Ladygina
Staring at Drest as he lamented that he practically lived hereGina just shook her head. Then as he was telling Mai how he was happy she was there, she took a sip of tea, just in time to hear him say,

"...a place where everybody knows your name."

And that made her nearly spit out her tea. Hmmm...seemed her cousin had been spending a bit too much time in the taverns........
She raised her cup and said,
"Cheers!"

Drest could have sworn he heard a laugh in the background. He looked around and sighed. He really needed to get outside to the stables and check on his horse. He would need to be leaving soon for Salisbury. There were several things he should take care of there. The bakery would probably need more supplies. He needed to find out if there was another trade run available. There were classes at the University he could teach....and take. Finding out what had happened in County politics while he was away would take some time. He would have to send a letter to those concerned about when the ship would be ready to sail. Mezz would want to go, but he had his doubts about that idea.

Or, he could just chuck it all down a rathole and take off. Leave behind this whole farce and go back to the East. There was at least one group of villages who would greet him with open arms and not ask questions. Drest sighed again. That wouldn't do. You don't just run away from your responsibilities. He had accepted the good with the bad. That was life...and the great secret to life? Knowing when to act and when to wait. Right now seemed like a good time to wait.

Drestakil stood and walked over to his shoulder scabbard leaning against the wall, pulled the sword up and out. He walked over to the table and picked up his empty tankard, then stepped into the hall. There was a servant standing there, "Do you know who I am?" Drest asked him. "Yes, M'lord Mortimer," the servant nervously replied, eyes on the sword in Drest's hand. "Good. I would like this filled," Drest said as he handed the servant the tankard. The servant moved off and Drest sauntered back to his seat and sat down, his sword across his knees.

"Now," he said to the two women, "what were we talking about?"

Gina watched Drest walk to his scabbard, pull out his sword and walk out into the hall. Curious as to what her cousin was up to, she strained to listen to what he was say, and caught his end of the conversation. When he walked back into the room, he said,

She looked at him sternly and said, "We were talking about you not going on with the servants and scaring the Bejabbers out of them!

Mai smothered a giggle. Drest certainly had a novel way to get his preferred drink. She felt easy in the company of these two people. It was a relief.

Lifting her cup of now tepid tea she grinned wryly at Drest Cheers! I see I have a lot to learn about addressing servants. She could not help thinking that, if it were not for this accident of birth she would have been most likely to enter such a place as this only as a servant, or perhaps a herbwife if such skills were needed.

Picking up on an earlier comment he had made she turned the conversation away from unruly servants... or was that unruly lords? I know that Gina and Dran come from Worcester, my home county. Indeed I met them in their home town of Evesham many months ago. How about the rest of the family? Where do you reside Drest when not at the castle? She smiled, I travel a lot, it would be good to know where I can find family on my journeys.

Drestakil chuckled, then answered, "I live in Salisbury in a small house outside of town, but most often when I'm in town I'm supervising the fields and a bakery I own. I used to do most of the baking, but now that I travel so much I leave the baking to others. I buy supplies for the bakery and make sure the fields keep going. As Gina said, most of the time I'm a rare sight around here. I need to leave soon to get back to Salisbury. Yours Truly is studying 'seamanship'." Drest chuckled again, "Imagine that...the last time I was involved in any way with the sea I was a slave on a galley ship. How time flies. Of course, there was the time I was a deckhand on a junk. I wonder if Captain Ho Shi is still around? I'll have to go back over there one of these days and find out."

Looking at Drest, Lady Gina says, "When will you come back for a longer visit? It seems like every time you stop by 'tis only briefly."

Gina's question punctured his reverie. For a minute there he'd been on the deck of the Fist of the Gods, sailing in the middle of the Emperor's fleet, and her question about when he might come back had broken his day dream. He shook his head, "Who knows? Especially if this new trading company comes to anything. I'm an experienced trader and have been all over England. Probably the trading company will start out just in the isles, which means I may be coming through here constantly. On the other hand, they may decide to start trading with the continent. In that case, my traveling experience may come in handy there too." A servant entered with a tray carefully balancing a mug of ...something... so Drest rose from his seat.

Raising his sword and putting the point square in front of the servant's eyes, Drestakil said, "Halt, varlet!! Let us hope that mug contains ale. If it has tea in it, there will be a fresh mound in the graveyard by nightfall." The wide-eyed servant slowly lowered the tray to the table and raised the mug, "Y-Y-Your ale, M'lord Mortimer." Drest took the mug, sniffed the contents, and lowered his sword. "You're a good man and I hope your children appreciate you." The servant quickly left the room, Drest raised his mug and said, "Ladies...a toast. A good friend will bail you out of jail...a GREAT friend will be sitting beside you saying, 'D--N! That was fun!'...so, a toast to GREAT friends." So saying, Drest emptied his mug.

She was sad that she might not get to see Drest that much with his traveling and trading, but she was glad to have what little time with him she could manage. Seeing the servant come back into the room, she just shook her head at Drest's antics and put her hand in front of her mouth to stifle the giggle that threatened to escape.
"Drest!" She admonished lightheartedly, "Leave him be. You keep that up and you'll make one of these servants soil themselves one day!" Raising her tea in unison with Drest, she looks at Mai, shakes her head, and says once again, "Cheers!"

Drestakil
Drest drained his tankard, set it on the tray and sheathed his sword. It was time to leave and get back to Salisbury.

"Ladies, it was a pleasure to chat with you and I hope to do it again soon. I have to leave. It's time to do something with my time that's productive." He bowed over Gina's hand, then bowed over Mai's hand and said, "If either of you are in Salisbury, be sure to stop by the Miner's Arms. I try to keep an eye out for friends in there when I'm at home. If I get word that you're there I'll stop by and visit."

Drestakil walked out of the room, down the hall and out the great doors, then out to the stable. He beckoned to one of the stable boys, who brought his horse out. Drest looked over the animal. What was this one named? Perch? Thank Mezz for that name. She liked names beginning with "P" for some reason. Her own horse's name was 'Persimmon'. Drest chuckled to himself, put his foot in the stirrup, grabbed the fore and aft ends of the saddle and hoisted himself up. That was when he remembered to shift his sword belt up so his sword stuck up above his shoulders. One of these days....

Drestakil urged his horse up to a ground-covering trot. No reason to kill himself, he could make it back to Salisbury in three days. If he rode hard it would still take over 2 and he wasn't in the mood to ride hard.

As Drest takes his leave, Gina just shakes her head. Drest was such a colorful character! She and Drest had been through so much together that night all that time ago, and it had brought them closer than some of her other family members. She loved them all of course, but Drest....he had a special place in her heart.
She looked at Mai and said,
"Well that was an interesting visit! Sometimes I think he just comes by here to scare the servants!"

Mai laughed. I liked him a lot, I think his bark is worse than his bite... she looked doubtful for a moment, probably. Certainly, he has made me feel so welcome, she looked gratefully at Gina, as have you. I expected this to be much more of an ordeal.

As the servants moved quietly around the room, lighting candles, Mai noted with a start that the evening had drawn in. Oh... I didn't realise we had been sitting here so long, Gina. With the knowledge came the realisation that she was very tired. It had been an early start and a very eventful day. Apologetically, she stifled a yawn. Would you mind terribly, if I asked to me shown to my room? Else I might just fall asleep here by the fire. It has been a long day, but she smiled warmly, Oh I am so glad to be here.

As Mai stifled a yawn, Gina herself followed suit. "Aye, I didn't realize it was so late either! It has been such a joy visiting with you and Drest, and getting to know you. You will fit in just fine with the rest of us, I assure you. Come, let me show you that room now. We have a room at the top, with a lovely view. It's octogonal in shape, and I think you will enjoy it."
She led Mai out of the room, telling the servants they were finished for the night, and they could clean up. She showed Mai to her room, said goodnight, and made her way down to her own room. She had alot to do tomorrow and needed to get some rest. Breigan would be here early to pick her up.....

Pliny
Pliny approached the castle nervously, dressed smartly in the best clothes he had. He was in black as usual, but it was well cut to his tall frame, his sword hanging in an ornate scabbard at his side. He was let in by a butler after he had explained his identity and business, the man showing him to a room where he was left to wait and worry. He had never seen his father apart from their brief words during the fight in this castle and this was, to him, possibly one of the most important moments of his life. He strode around the room, his every muscle tight with tension, waiting.
Drestakil
'I am tired,' thought Drestakil as he rode down the lane to Mortimer Castle. A light breeze was blowing, ruffling his cloak about. His horse's mane was being billowed up and down as Drest breathed deeply of the cool air.

He would need to stop by the Castle to chat with Gina and whatever family member might be there, catch up on things, then get back to Salisbury as quickly as possible. He needed to buy supplies for the Bakery, check to see if any trade goods needed to be transported, study at the University...there just wasn't enough time anymore.

A pool of water by the side of the road caught his eye and he led his horse to it. The horse lowered its head and thrust its muzzle into the cold water, drinking deeply. Drest caught sight of his reflection in the pool. He looked at himself astride the horse, clouds moving slowly past his head. He chuckled, 'Not bad, old man. There's still something there and still an urge to use it. I'm not dead yet.' He pulled the horse's head up and urged it to a trot. The Castle gate was open and he waved at the gate keeper as he rode through. Riding up to the stable he tossed the reins to a stable boy as he slid down the side and strode into the entrance hall.

Drestakil reached up and unbuckled his sword belt, slung it down and around his waist, entering the sitting room as he did so. He stopped, catching sight of Pliny.
