> [RP] Mortimer Castle

Kennagillian
First there was silence in the hall and then suddenly there was movement. Kenna had been looking down and was distracted with a blanket that had wrapped itself around her daughter in such a way that her feet were hanging out. She looked up in enough time to see Drest's face (which looked extremely unhappy) and watch the door shut behind him.

"Well.." she said, just as someone else came running. It was just about the only reaction she had time for.

She kinda froze as the realization of who it was hit her. He'd been gone for so long. She felt like maybe she was just having great shades of wishful thinking, but when he yelled out her name, she knew better. He half scared the wits out of her.

As a second thought, he noticed the baby on his way in for an embrace. Yeah you've missed a few things, Buddy, she thought to herself and started to smile as he planted a kiss.

Gina came right behind him, of course, giving a warm inviting hug.

"Thank you Cousin, it's.." she paused and thought about the last few seconds ".. good to be home" she looked Pliny over and arched her eyebrow ".. I see you decided to show your face again. I hope you have a good explanation after having to miss you and worry so much. And it better not be a female. I don't want to hear how someone won you over and it's her fault you haven't come back to face the music. I won't say anymore till I hear the rest. Looks like Drest has already got a hold of you. What happened anyway? is he alright? should someone go after him?" she looked down at Mary and looked back to Pliny again ".. oh and this Mary, Mary this is Uncle Pliny.. you don't mind do you Pliny? I mean we have so many cousins I thought maybe she'd like an uncle since your as close to a brother as I am ever gonna get" she smiled.

She hadn't realized how much she missed adult conversation, but she noticed the two of them staring at her and decided it may be time to take a breath.

"So, do either of you want to hold her, I could use a drink" she grinned from ear to ear.

Mai had run out of tea. Usually she kept a supply up in the Octagon. Mortimer Castle was so large that she found that easier than going down to the dining room every time she fancied a drink. She could, she supposed, have summoned a servant, but she would have shouted herself hoarse before anyone had heard her up in her tower eyrie and she absolutely refused to have some poor soul stationed at her door awaiting the occasional order!

Wandering downstairs in search of sustenance, she heard voices. She recognised Gina and Kenna, but the third, a man's was unfamiliar. Following the sounds she soon joined her cousins. Her face li up when she saw Kenna had Mary with her. Her first impulse was to ask if she could cuddle the babe, but she restrained her self. Greetings Cousins! how lovely to see you. She smiled politely at the stranger and looked at Gina quizzically, awaiting an introduction.

She listened as Kenna went into a whirlwind of words, a smirk trying to cross her face. She wondered when the last time Kenna had adult interaction, as Bart was away for a bit again.
She was about to lead them back into the dining room when she heard Mai's voice.
Turning to her other cousin, she said,
"Well, there's almost enough of us here now for a Mortimer party!" Looking back at tiny Mary, she lowered her voice and said, "But, how about we settle for a quiet gathering instead, for now. Let's go back into the dining room and we'll get settled and catch up." Seeing the puzzled look on Mai's face as she looked at Pliny, she smacked her forehead and said, "Oh my! I'm sorry. I forgot....Maitane, this is Drest's son, Pliny. Pliny, this is Maitane, another cousin." She smiled at both of them, so happy that their family was growing...

Drestakil
It was good to feel the wind in his hair, watch the sunbeams glide through the trees, see the clouds float in the sky. The hoofbeats became a kind of music his thoughts could run with, although thinking was the last thing he wanted to do right now. He wanted to get off the path of life and sit to the side, watching it move by, letting things happen without him. He wanted to sit down and...what?

'You need to go back, your son is waiting to talk to you.' Drestakil stopped the horse. His eyes narrowed. What was this? Had the shock made him go insane? Silence along the road. He could hear the breeze, leaves moving, branches creaking, the sounds of him and his horse breathing, leather moving across leather. There was no one around.

Drest urged his horse forward, 'You need to go back, my son is waiting to talk to you,' and he stopped again. There was a clearing off the road, sunlight streaming through, illuminating a person standing in the middle of it. Drest looked closer. A woman? Out here in the middle of the forest? Drest rode toward the clearing.

"Ma'am, can I help you?" he asked her, "Are you lost?" He slid off his horse and tied it to a sapling. She hadn't moved, he walked toward her. "If you need directions...?" Her hair was floating around her face, her gown molding itself to her shape and she looked somehow familiar. The breeze quieted, the trees stilled.

"My sweet Love, I know it's been a long time, but surely I haven't changed THAT much," she said and laughed. Drestakil looked at her, really looked at her and dropped to his knees. "Elizabeth!?" Tears welled up in his eyes. "What...how...where...," there were so many questions, so much to ask. He ran down and stopped.

"Your son needs you and you need him. I know you feel guilty for not being there for us." She moved to him and put her arms around his head, pulling him to her. He felt her touch, his mind stopped it's wild whirling and he calmed as her warmth and love seeped into him. He put his arms around her waist and pulled her close.

"My Love, please don't feel guilty. There was nothing you could do. There was no way you could know that I was still alive, that Pliny was alive. Please go back and be with him, for me." She held his head back and he looked into her eyes, those dark pools so deep he could lose himself in them.

"I don't want to leave you," he whispered hoarsely, "not again. Stay with me," he said. She looked at him, her face softening. Elizabeth wiped away the tears flowing down his face. Drestakil stood and crushed her to him, "I won't let go, not this time."

Somehow she was standing in front of him, "Good bye, My Love. I have to go. Tell Pliny I love him and hope he remembers me." He rushed toward her, "Elizabeth...don't leave...please stay!"

She was gone, he was alone.

Pliny
"Uncle?" Pliny asked, weighing the word in his mouth and mind. "I can do uncle, even if I am slightly confused as to who that'd set me up as related to in this mayhem of a family." As she offered the child up to be held, though, he backed off rapidly, waving his hands in front of him. "Oh no, I don't hold kids, I DROP kids. Gina will do it!"

He turned as he saw Maitane approaching, seeing her glance to Gina and assuming that she was another family member, a view confirmed by Gina. He bowed deeply to his cousin, saying "Pleased to meet you." He smiled at her, adding "Don't tell me how you're a cousin, who you're related to, I'm not sure I want to know. This family is far more taxing on the memory than I think I can cope with."
Sindaia
She'd been lost in her thoughts as she rode towards Mortimer Castle.. it was her first time coming back sober, and the first time she planned to actually maybe see some of her family in a long time. Her thoughts were conflicted, she wanted to keep going, but there was a part of her that just wanted to turn around and go back to Dorchester, or Andover, or wherever she'd end up.

She almost thought she was imagining things when her sights fell on someone standing off the side of the road in a small clearing. She slowed her horse to a walk to try to get a better look. Realizing that it was her uncle, and it looked like he was calling to someone she couldn't see, she stopped near the clearing and slid off her horse.

"Drest? Is everything alright?"

As she neared him, she noticed the look of despair on his face. She gingerly put her hand on his shoulder, waiting for him to be able to speak, and there if he needed a hug or someone to talk to.
Drestakil
Drestakil had heard of men so stressed that they imagined things. Was that what had just happened to him? Surely not...he was as unlikely as anyone living to have something like that happen. He looked at the ground. He could see his footsteps, but no others. He could see the spots where his knees had punched holes in the ground, but not her footprints that he knew should be right in front of them. She was gone...again.

He didn't hear anyone come up behind him, didn't hear the horse, so Sindaia's touch was almost a shock. It came from another world, one he still hadn't come back to yet. He was still with Elizabeth, or wanting to be. He heard her ask the question and realized he was breathing hard and fast when he tried to answer. 'Is everything all right?'

He started breathing slow, deep breaths. The world righted itself. His head stopped spinning. The clearing got its normal lighting. He looked at Sindaia, "No, everything is NOT all right. Your uncle is going stark, raving mad. Not only am I seeing and hearing things, but I just walked out on Gina, Kenna and Pliny." He sighed, "On the way back I'll try to think of a way I can be more rude than I've already been."

No one had commented about Drest's hasty exit and so she took that in stride, laughing a little at Pliny's reaction to the baby and Gina's happiness over the sudden combination of faces joining her quiet rooms.

She brought Mary close to her and leaned forward to hug Mai, "Hello, cousin. It is good to see you again. I trust you will have many stories to tell since we saw each other last" she is ready to follow them all into the dining room.

She listens to the hurried introductions and adds...

"Has anyone seen Jules lately?" she asked, quite curious.

"I have been hoping to see him again" she confesses, looking back at the door for just a moment, still worried about her uncle.

A puzzled look crossed her face as she listened to Drest. "Seeing and hearing things? And you walked out on..." It was all so unlike the Drestakil she knew, there had to be some explanation, some reason for it.

"Wait.. just one moment.."

She went back to her horse and pulled out a bottle of whiskey from the bag. After going back to Drest, she handed him the bottle.

"You look like you can use some of that. Now.. tell me, what happened? What are you seeing and hearing, and why did you walk out on everyone?"

Mai chuckled as she held out her hand to Pliny. I promise not to try and explain anything, for I hardly know myself who is related to who and how. Her chuckle became a wide grin as she added It is enough to know we are kin and "Cousin" works fine for me, in whatever degree.

Looking at Kenna she answered, Certainly we have lots to catch up on, and I haven't seen Jules since Gina's wedding... She was about to add more when a servant came in to announce that the tea Lord Drestakil had ordered was served in the dining room. Unable to believe her ears, remembering his views on that beverage quite strongly, she could see him waving his sword at a terrorised servant quite clearly in her mind's eye, she looked at her cousins in puzzlement. Tea? Drest? What in The Lady's name...?

After her hasty introductions of Mai and Pliny, Gina tried to focus more on everyone in the room, and not dwell on Drest. She knew he'd return. He just had to clear her mind.
She giggled at Mai and Pliny speak of not knowing how anyone was related, and said,
"Well, at least I'm not the only one who gets confused! I feel more comfortable calling everyone "Cousin", for 'tis easier than pulling out the family tree every time someone comes in." Turning to Kenna as she inquired about Juliyn, she said, "Nay, I've not seen Juliyn since the wedding either. I do hope he is well." She heard the servant announce tea was served, and heard Mai's confused question. She smiled and shook her head, saying, "Mai, dear, I am as confused as you are, but rest assured I warned Drest before he made his exit that he was to drink the tea and like it and NOT torture the poor soul that brought it to him!"
She led the way into the dining room, and turned to Kenna. Looking down at the sweet angel in her arms, she said, smiling, "Now how about you hand that beautiful child over to me so that I may begin spoiling her!"

Drestakil
Drestakil eyed the flask dubiously. "I doubt that will help any, but I'll try anything right now," and took it, upended it and swallowed the contents, feeling the burn all the way down to the pit of his stomach. He handed the empty flask back to Sindaia.

"I walked out because I...I don't know. I was confused. I was angry...not at any of you, but at myself. I was...hurt." Drest walked a few steps away and turned to Sindaia. "I had to face something I didn't want to face. I failed. I don't like to fail...at anything, never mind failing at being a husband and parent."

It was almost strange to see the sun still shining, to feel the same breeze moving once more. He looked around the small clearing. Tears welled up again, spilling out and down his face, "I saw Elizabeth...she was standing here."

Sind looked at Drest as he walked a few steps away. The pain was evident in his look, and her heart went out to him. Like most of her family, Drest was a friend long before he was family.

"Uncle.. take it from someone that knows first hand. If you were confused, angry and hurt, no one will think you were being rude. They will understand." She sighed, "Besides, walking out seems to run in the family...

And if you feel as if you've failed, and Pliny is there at the castle right now, you have a chance to correct it. Take that chance while you have it, and don't let it escape you."

She saw the tears spilling down his face. She closed the distance between them and put her arm around his shoulders, not knowing what else to do or say about him seeing Elizabeth. She only knew a few details about what happened, and only from Pliny's side of things.

"It's ironic really.. it was you that found Viceroy and realized it was my father.. and it was through my discussion with Pliny that we realized he's your son. And neither of us can fully let go of the past and accept those who should be closest to us..."
Drestakil
If only old Master Ho Shi could see him now, crying like a baby and whining because the world wasn't treating him the way he would like. Drestakil sighed, wiped his eyes with the backs of his hands and shook the mood off. Elizabeth was gone and nothing could change that. He had a son and nothing could change that. He hadn't been there to help bring up the boy and nothing could change that. You work with what you have.

Drestakil whistled for his horse, swung up into the saddle, watched Sindaia do the same, "Let's get back and I'll make my apologies. I want to have a long talk with Pliny."

You beat me to the post, Gina, Mai laughed as her cousin offered to take Mary from Kenna's arms, Still, she add mischievously, I concede with pleasure, after all.. you probably need to familiarise yourself to babies more than I do at the moment. How is Drano by the way.?
