Drestakil
There were times when a man became a man...the great hunter, the protector of the family, the defender of the weak and helpless, the one who saw through the complicated morass of details and picked out the salient pith of an argument to make a needed decision. For Drestakil, this would NOT be one of those times.

"Well, believe it, he looks just like you without the smile wrinkles. It's because he's not as old as you are....OH!"

First a smile, then a huge grin, then Drest burst out laughing, "They're not 'smile wrinkles', they're 'character lines'. You might try to acquire a few. Which reminds me...whatever happened to 'respect for your elders'?" He glanced around, saw the tea sitting on a tray and thundered, "WHO BROUGHT ME TEA!"

Not able to hold the laughter in any longer, she mock scolds Drest, yet again. "Cousin! YOU be the one who ordered the bloody tea! Now, drink it and like it!" Leaning down to whisper in little Mary's ear, loud enough for them to all hear, she says teasingly, "Bless your little heart, Mary, these are your relatives!!!"

Mai frowned slightly in confusion when Gina said Drest had ordered the tea. She cast her mind back to the day she had first met him and seen him brandish a sword at a servant foolish enough to offer him the same. She shrugged silently, just another... eccentricity to get used to. She shot Mary a glance as Gina teased before chipping in with they aren't a bad lot really, honest.

Kennagillian
Kenna giggled with the rest of them, happy to see her uncle having a go at her for the wrinkles, and with Gina over the tea. She couldn't have changed one thing about any of her kin, they were a mess but the fun kind of mess that you truly never want to clean up.

"My my my, I will drink the tea, pass it here. Do you think it will help me produce character lines uncle?" she asked, being cheeky.

Kenna laughed, looking at Mai and Gina telling poor Mary what to expect in the future "..I know, right?" she stands and walks over to where they all stood. She gingerly pats her new cousin on the back, noticing how she seemed to be allowing the ease of the moment to settle her in with the rest of them. It was hard not to feel at home here, even if you were never related. Being blood only meant you were a certified lunatic with an outrageous sense of humor, and sometimes bearing an aversion to tea.

Mai giggled and winked conspiratorially at Kenna, character does seem a family trait, with or without the lines. Beckoning a hovering servant closer she said quietly, I believe Lord Drest would prefer something other than tea. Please fetch him his usual tipple. Inwardly she laughed at her self. Didn't take you long to start acting the part. A slight pang went through her as she thought of what changes had occurred but looking round at her family it was soon banished, look what she had gained in return.

She shook her head at the goings-on and said, "Ok, enough of that. Let's get somewhere and sit down. We need to welcome Pliny to the family properly! Plus, I wanna bask in the glow of this angel baby I am holding!"

Drestakil
"Ladies, if you will pardon me and my son, we would like to adjourn to a more private room to have a long talk. Yes, a talk that we should have had some years ago, and I don't mean 'THE TALK'. There is a room down the hall we can use and if this servant can bring us some ale, instead of tea, I would greatly appreciate it." Drestakil bowed himself and Pliny out of the room. Among the many things he had learned in his life so far, there were two very important things. One, girls were definitely prettier than men, and two, if you wanted to have a serious chat with another man, leave the women behind.

Juliyn
Juliyn nervously tapped his hand on his thigh as he rode. This would be his first time visiting the Mortimer castle. Previously he had only seen his family at weddings and state functions, but he had endeavored to change that at the last wedding. Family was important, after all, it could be a constant solace, or a strong rock in times of turmoil.

Things in England were coming to a point, threats against the border and the declarations of unity seemed to point towards a coming conflict and Juliyn was certain that should there be one, he would be called to help in whatever way he could, as many of the other Mortimers would as well. He wanted to take advantage of the lull, the calm before the storm so to speak, to see his family.

Coming to the gate he explained who he was and with some difficulty from the gatekeeper was let into the grounds.

Dismounting from his unruly stallion, Juliyn reluctantly handed the reins to a stable boy, waiting a moment to be sure that Emir would behave. The stallion had an attitude that was difficult to train, but Juliyn had quickly become attached and was hesitant to part with him.

His spirits high, Juliyn straightened his trousers and quickly climbed the steps to be led into the main parlor, and then to a room to freshen up before retreating to the den to see if any other family were present at the castle.
Drestakil
Sooner or later everyone in the family stopped in at Mortimer Castle. It was a nice place, always ready to receive one of the family for a night or a week or longer. Drestakil himself had stopped in many times on his journeys to the north and back. It was convenient and there was almost always someone here with whom he could swap lie-...(ahem) ...stories of his travels. The fact that he had spent many years far to the east gave him a ready store of strange tales which, suitably embellished and sometimes edited in the presence of the Ladies of the family, were welcome.

He rode up to the gate, nodded to the guard and handed his horse to the stable boy. The entrance was flanked by two guards who stood at attention, their halberds crossed in front of the door. They pulled them to the side as he walked up. Drest cursed to himself, as he couldn't remember the names of the two guards. He could remember the names of their wives and children, their favorite horses and drinks, but not their names. He sighed. One of the side effects of getting older, he supposed. Then he chuckled to himself. His son, Pliny, would have a field day if he suspected the Old Man was losing it.

Drestakil stopped to chat with the two guards, asking after their families, which pleased the men. Drest could see it in their demeanor...a twinkle in their eyes, shoulders thrown back just a touch, a slight smile coming to their lips. It took so little to make people happy. Why would you NOT do that? Happy people were much easier to deal with.

He entered the main hall to find a man standing at the fireplace. The sound of his boots on the floor made the man turn to him. Drest recognized Juliyn.

Juliyn
Refreshed from his travel, Juliyn stopped to enjoy the warmth of the fireplace when he heard the telltale tap of boots crossing the hard floor. Halfway turning, Juliyn glanced behind and took in the familiar face of Drest.

His lips breaking into an easy smile, Juliyn crossed the rest of the way towards the man and warmly held his hand out. "Uncle! It's good to see you!" and it was good to see him! It was amazing how seeing family lightened ones' spirits. "How have your travels been since I saw you in Sussex?" He glanced around the room once more, enthralled at the surroundings of the castle. His father's estate, (Juliyn's now, but it was still difficult for him to acknowledge that) which housed a modestly large manor, was easily dwarfed by the size of the impressive castle. "This is my first time on the grounds of Mortimer castle. I can say that I am quite impressed."
Ladygina
She had been in the Dining Hall relaxing over a cup of tea, when a servant came in and said, "M'Lady, Lord Drestakil and another gentleman are in the main receiving room. I thought you would like to know." Smiling at the servant, she got up and went out to the receiving room and saw Drest and....was that Juliyn?? Yes! She said, "Well, well, well, what brings you two here at the same time? Not that I'm not very glad to see you, of course."

Drestakil
Drestakil took the offered hand and smiled, "Hello, Juliyn, it's good to see you again too. I've been through all of Sussex and back to Salisbury since I saw you last in Hastings." He motioned Juliyn to a seat, took one opposite him, then immediately stood when Ladygina entered the room.

"Well, well, well, what brings you two here at the same time? Not that I'm not very glad to see you, of course."

Drest took her hand and brushed it lightly with his lips, then, in a stage whisper to Juliyn said, "She says that to all the men who come here."

Juliyn
About to ask Drest how he had enjoyed his visit to Sussex, Juliyn noticed the graceful figure of his cousin Gina enter the room. Rising to his feet, he chuckled and raised a playful eyebrow at Drest's exaggerated whisper,
"Then I shall I'll try not to feel too special about the sentiment! You look gorgeous, as always, Lady Gina."

He shallowly bowed to touch his lips to the back of her hand, and grinned.
"As for my excuse for being here, well, I will have to think that up as we go along. For now we'll say I was in the neighborhood and felt it was finally time to drop in and say, 'hello'."
He straightened and cast an eye between the two,
"I saw Drest some time ago in Hastings, but when was the last, with you? It must have been Vice's wedding! Too long, I think. How are you doing, cousin?"
Ladygina
Smiling at both men, and shaking her head at the teasing, she says, "You two are going to have to learn not to be so formal around me! All the bowing is not necessary. Now, as for me speaking so friendly of all the men that come here, I would have to say that not all of them get my gratitude for stopping in, but if they're family, then aye, 'tis always good to see them." Looking at Juliyn, she says, "Aye, I believe it was Vice's wedding when we spoke last. I do hope you have been well?" About that time, the servant came into the room to ask if they needed any refreshments. Looking at Drest with a smirk, she says, "Aye, please bring in some ale for Lord Drest, lest ye enjoy getting the wrath of his ire. For myself, I would like some tea. And Jules? What would you have?"

Drestakil
The Lady sat and Drestakil seated himself in a comfortable chair that faced the door. He always enjoyed his visits to the family Castle, but there were times when he almost begrudged that feeling. There had been one time when a visit here ended in tragedy and he still had strong memories of it. The last time he had been here he had finally met his son, officially, and seen an apparition of his wife, gone twenty years or more.

"I think Juliyn has some news to tell, which will be good news to all the women in the family, I'm sure. To all of us bachelors, it may be that life is closing in around us. That reminds me, how is that husband of yours...Dranoel? I haven't seen him around here or heard from him in ages."
