Kennagillian
"That's because we keep them in the cages, Uncle. I thought you would know that by now" she grinned as she strolled into the room, careless and wasted. She was tired and every bit of the stitching of her clothes mirrored as much. Long had she traveled just to come home and Dorchester's coin would speak to that test. the markets had been good to her and the purse she has handed Maka would make any mayor proud. Even though she was mucked by the road, she grinned. It was good to be useful and to find the reward of her family's attendance when she returned from trading across England.

" E'llo everyone, sorry for interrupting the gathering, I just slipped in behind Uncle and shook off the dust. Just got back from a very long trip... I think I will have an ale too and hear this news, myself. What say you Jules?" she winked at her cousin, whom she knew little about. She knew not what it was, but he was so adorable and full of life that she had to quell the urge to pinch his cheeks the same as she had on the day he announced he was kin.

Gina looked well and refreshed. She had taken a step back from politics lately, besides the brief brush with possibly taking Kenna's father's place at the crown. As proud as she was for watching her lady cousin work diligently at what the people wanted, she believed things happened for a reason. This peaceful time would be spent well.. with family.

Speaking of..

Drest was such a dapper gentleman, wise eyed and commanding. He didn't seem as wounded from their last encounter, she hoped he and Pliny had been able to bond, actually talk to each other about what needed to be said. She also was curious about Mezzanine. He'd not brought her around in awhile...maybe she should not bring that up.

More importantly..

She knew that soon Bart would find a letter tied with ribbon and stuck with seal announcing her presence, and she would see her husband and daughter soon. That was what she wanted most.

Now where was the ale ? She looked around.

Dutchbart
It had been a while since the last time Bart had visited Mortimer Castle, he had been trying to make himself useful for the county, usually traveling around for personal trade, times had been good to him and so had the county, and as such he had decided to work diligently to return the favor. Rumors were around for a possible invasion, but ever since the last war he had grown disconnected from the paranoid leaders that were running the armies, he had stayed to himself, and out of trouble as best he could.

Recently Bart had received a letter from his wife, she had returned from a trade trip around the country, he now had to make sure that her travels had been safe and that she was fine, Bart knew she had been traveling with the safety of good friends, but he couldn't help but be worried about her.

With him was Molly, the lady that had been taking care of Mary all this time, they were riding in the back of the carriage, Bart had looked behind him in the carriage regularly to make sure they were still there, Mary had been rocked asleep and Molly seemed to be pre-occupied with something.

In the distance he could see the castle appearing at the horizon, the sight of it made him sigh with relief at the realization this little journey was almost over and that he would see Kenna again, he was sure that she would be full of stories.

A little while later he finally turned the carriage through the gates “We've arrived...” Bart said under his breath “I wonder how tired she'll be..” He rode the carriage to the front door and stepped out, he walked around the carriage to help Molly out and after that took Mary in his arms “We're going to see mommy..” Bart said with a smile on his face to the still sleepy Mary, she yawned briefly and continued chewing on her doll.

He didn't bother with the carriage, the stable boys would know what to do with it.

As he passed the guards he found himself in the main hall, and surprisingly there was quite a crowd, he looked around to see if Kenna was here too, Drest, Julyin, Gina, and then the smile on his face widened, there she was, his wife, he walked over to her “Hi darling, how has your trip been? We've missed you.”

Drestakil
Drestakil stood as Kenna breezed into the room. That would be the word to describe her entrance - breezed. Suddenly Drest felt old. He sighed. All these youngsters coming up in the family...his own son barely 20 years old. Kenna couldn't be much older than that, if she was THAT old.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again...what happened to respect for your elders? If I talked to MY father the way you talk to me, I'd be picking myself up off the floor." He looked at Juliyn as he sat down again, "One thing you have to be wary of around this family, Juliyn, and that is there's a conspiracy afoot. If you aren't married, you walk into 'couples' situations. So far I've managed to avoid complications, but I have a feeling it's just a matter of time. How about you and I take off on a slow ship to the continent?"

As Drest said those words, Dutchbart, Kenna's husband walked through the door carrying their daughter, Mary.

"Tea, please." Juliyn replied, wondering at the hint of a smile that played on Gina's lips as she ordered an ale for Drest.

Taking a seat near the two, Juliyn heard Drest mention some news of his, and he playfully tilted his head in mock confusion for a moment.

"News? I can't think of...Oh... right. that news."

Kenna's voice rang out as she entered, looking a mess of energy and exhaustion all at the same time. Juliyn felt his smile grow. He was glad he had come, it was relaxing to see so many members of his family.

"Please do have an ale, cousin! I suppose it would be better to just say my news at once to everyone, better for the bachelors that way, less walls closing in on the poor chaps."

Juliyn smiled at Drest, and was about to comment on the "couples' conspiracy," mostly to say it really must not be true. Maybe Drest just thought that was the case. He was rather old, and a bachelor, and well, these things add up in the grand scheme of believing there to be a conspiracy, but then Bart walked in with Mary. Juliyn's eyes widened and he nodded slowly in understanding. "You could be right, Drest. It does appear that there is some subliminal messaging here. I do promise not to take part in this conspiracy. Though, I will have to decline on the passage off the island. I'm afraid I'd have a fairly irate lady to deal with if I were to do so."

A servant arrived with the refreshments and Juliyn eagerly took his tea, if only for a bit of a distraction for a moment before sharing his news. He never truly liked to be the center of attention, but "out with it" as they say.

Swallowing the first bit of the scalding beverage, Juliyn spoke evenly "Alright, to the news then. I'm sure you may have some idea, so it's probably no surprise, but I've asked Penelope de Grey to marry me, and she has thankfully accepted."
Drestakil
Drest smiled...having received a message from a certain young lady of his acquaintance, "I suppose I should congratulate you. I met your Lady while I was traveling through Sussex a few weeks ago with Mezz. A Countess at that...good choice. I like her."

He took the mug from the servant, sniffed the contents suspiciously, then upended and drained it in one gulp. He handed the empty mug to the servant, "Bring me another. All of a sudden I'm very thirsty."

Drest turned to Kenna, "How is my," and his brow wrinkled, "grandniece? greatniece?" Drest smiled again, "The little one? I can work with that."

Kenna stopped to hug Gina for a second, hearing the men exchange their secret codes of man talk, likely something mischievous afoot. Candidly she rolled her eyes at her lady cousin. These Mortimer men were forever obstinate.

She laughed lightly at Drest and seeing the two go back and forth, only distracted by her husband as he came in the room.

She went to him, of course, kissing his cheek and dotting on her daughter.

"Oh my, what good news then!" she answered Jules, him having announced his announcement finally.

"I am sure Bart will just LOVE having to attend another wedding" she smiled a big glorious grin at him, teasingly of course.
"Be quick to let us know when, now. I wouldn't miss it for the world" she smiled at Julyin.

Mary was reaching for her and Kenna noticed her hands were dirty. She looked curiously at Bart and then took the babe, wondering if he had been letting her make mud pies...again.

"And Drest, she looks to be as busy as ever. Here" she walked over and stood right in front of him and sat the six month old bundle in her great uncles lap ".. it's high time you spoiled her a bit, but watch out for her quick hands. She does so love to pull at beards and mustaches" Kenna laughed.

She turned back to Jules "So cousin, when shall we meet your intended? I personally think we maybe should invite her to dinner.. or throw a small party..maybe an engagement dance or something on a boat ?" she had been quite interested in boating lately. All of these ideas spun about in her head, but she left Drest to coo at Mary while she returned to stand with Bart, pulling his arms over her shoulders so she could be close to him while she chattered on.

As she was about to answer Drest's question as to how Dranoel was, in walked Kenna, as if she hadn't a care in the world. She was thrilled to see her cousin and jumped up to greet her. Suddenly there was a flurry of conversation, and mention of Jule's getting engaged, and then there was Bart and Mary, almost as if out of nowhere. It was enough to make her dizzy! She tried inconspicuously to sit back down and catch her breath. She didn't want anyone to worry about her. She had been so tired lately, and had bouts with nausea. She believed she had picked up something or eaten some bad food during her travels with Dranoel. Once she got back to Evesham in the next couple of days, she planned to make a visit to Lord Beaker's office to have him diagnose her.

Not wanting anyone to notice her spell, she spoke cheerily,
"Well this is wonderful! I never expected when I came through on my way back to Evesham that we would have a family reunion! Now, we do need to make plans to me this young lady of Juliyn's very soon. I just hope your wedding, Jules, doesn't last as long as mine!" She said, joking about the length of time it took at her reception. She took another sip of tea, hoping to settle her stomach again.

Juliyn
Invite her to dinner, meet her, engagement party... on a boat. Juliyn heard it all, and silently bit his cheek in thought, the corner of his lips threatening to curl up into a smile with Gina and Kenna's comments. He turned to Gina to comment on the thought of having the family meet Penelope, but he was stopped for a moment with how pale she suddenly appeared to him. Her voice and manner seemed to betray little, but he swore that her hand shook even slightly as she raised the teacup to her lips. Perhaps it was all in his head. In any case, he didn't want to call attention to her in front of everyone.

"Did you say a party on a boat, Kenna? How unique. I'm sure Lady Penelope would enjoy that."

He nearly blanched at the thought of his wedding being as long as Gina's. Personally, he had been quite keen on the thought of eloping, but that wasn't going to happen, and he was warming up to the idea of a small ceremony.

"Let's hope it's not that long, Lady Gina, I think that would be an unnecessary strain on less social of us Mortimers, myself included, but mostly old uncle Drest." He winked quickly before continuing, " I believe the ceremony will be held in the de Grey chapel. Sometime in mid June is what we have decided on, but a date has not been set. You all will be the first to know when it is, I would love to introduce her to you all before then. I had intended to do so at Geof's reception, but it was unfortunately interrupted as you'll remember."

He turned to address Kenna, who stood comfortably leaning against Bart, intent to get the focus off of himself. "You look as though you're returning from a lengthy trip, I hope it was productive?"
Drestakil
Drestakil cradled Mary in his arm and started tickling her under the chin, making her giggle. There was something about the laughter of a child that was like nothing else. He smiled, she giggled, yawned and fell asleep in his arm. Bart and Kenna looked at him. "What can I say? It's a gift," he said as he leaned back in his seat."Juliyn, you need to run out of here as quickly as you can, find your Lady and elope. I would recommend a FAST boat to the continent. Trust me, this will solve many future problems."

"Hush Uncle" Kenna pretended to swat him away and shook her head, laughing. Drest was always trying to save the male populace from the wedded walk of shame.

"To answer your question sweet cousin, I have just returned. It was a very important trade for Dorchester at the request of Lord Makawabli. I serve the county as much as I can, sometimes that entails leaving for a bit" she squeezed Bart's hand and looked at Mary enjoying her great uncle's attentions.

"Thankfully I have the support of my husband and always the support of my family. It also makes the trip home much faster knowing I have something to come home for" she grabbed an ale and took a drink, enjoying the taste of it.

She could almost tell by the look in his eye that he understood.

What she didn't understand was why Gina was acting so strange.

"Gina, love, are you feeling well?" she asked. She was unusually quiet.

Listening to the chatter, and drinking her tea, she almost missed Kenna speaking directly to her. She looked up quickly, and said, "Aye, Cousin, I'm fine. Just a bit tired and under the weather lately. I fear I may have taken a virus or something on our trip South Dranoel and I took. But, I promise, I am going to make a stop by Lord Beaker's office whence I return to Evesham and have him give me an examination to make sure all is well. But having you all here is making me feel much better already!" She added that last part quickly to try and take away her cousin's, and maybe even her own, worry, but maybe it was a bit too quickly. She knew Kenna was the suspicious soul anyway. But she didn't want to let on how worried she was becoming that the symptoms she was having just would not go away....She just could not fathom what could be wrong with her.

Drestakil chose not to notice that Gina was 'under the weather.' Women in general were a odd lot...prone to unexplained mood changes and bouts of depression. Mortimer women seemed to move two or three notches above even that. He knew that Kenna and Sindaia were perfect examples of this. They could be sweet as honey one day and the next pulling out swords, putting on armor and walking into a battle. Kenna had some Order of Merit from the war in Birmingham. Those weren't just handed out to every Tom, Dick, and Harry. Drest smiled to himself. Let it pass, explanations would come later.

The baby was still cradled in his arm, still sleeping, breathing quick and light. Maybe it was time for him to do the same.

"I distinctly remember asking for more ale. Have they finished making it in the kitchen yet? Or do I need to go into town? Jules, would you like to go with me?...and you, Bart. You look like you could use some time away," he said and chuckled. He had sense enough not to say away from what. As he spoke a servant entered carrying a tray with mugs of ale on it.

OOC: I've bumped this up, to give continuity, and it's now been a couple of weeks since the last visit.....
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As she made her way back to Mortimer Castle, she wondered if anyone would be about to share her news with. She still wasn't feeling one hundred percent better than the last time she was here, but now, she knew what was wrong with her. And what was wrong , and what was "wrong" was something so very right and wonderful!
When she had departed the Castle two weeks ago to go home to Evesham, she made a point of going by MacBratney House first so that she could get a diagnosis from Lord Beaker. After a rather uncomfortable, and embarrassing, appointment, with some very intrusive questsions, he determined the "problem". She was approximately four weeks with child! She had not been able to share the news yet with her family, so she came back to the Castle, to relax a bit, and to hopefully see some of the family.
She walked through the doors, and found no one about, so she went to her room and unpacked her bag, and decided to take a nap, hoping someone would show soon.....

He rode up the long drive, admiring the imposing building the at looked ahead. As his horses hooves clattered over the cobbled of the courtyard he found himself surrounded by a group of watchful retainers. He wasn't surprised, in these troubled times it was safer to be prepared.

He reined in, raised his hands in peaceful greeting and dismounted slowly. After he had explained his business, mentioning the name of Maitane and proffering the sealed parchment, the stance of the onlookers turned from watchful to welcoming.

He handed over his charge

Lady Gina Mortimer-Sutton, Countess of Arden, Mortimer Castle, ____Shire

to the best dressed of his reception committee, and was rewarded both with coin and a meal in the cavernous kitchen.

As he left, replete, he thought, "who would have thought that wench in Ludlow had such fine connections?"

For those who can't follow the link the letter can be read in The Glen -> A Miscellany of Missives
Ladygina
After a nice refreshing nap, she came downstairs and realized she was famished. She went into the kitchen to see what Lorilye, who had come from Evesham to be of any assistance Gina needed, had prepared for lunch, and was greeting by the wonderful aroma of Soupes dorroy*. She made herself a plate and a cup of the tea that was on the table, and went into the dining room to enjoy.
After she had finished, she went into the sitting room and brought out parchment and quill and decided to write some letters, in the chance that none of the family made it by before she had to go back to Evesham.
She wanted to share the news with them but it might not be in person.
Just as she was about to begin, she heard a knock at the front door and looked up as Lorilye, entered the sitting room.
She said,
"M'Lady, there has been a missive delivered for you." And, handing the letter to Lady Gina, she made her way back out to do whatever it was she had been doing. Gina smiled warmly at the woman's retreating back. Lorilye and her husband had been so much help to her, and had come to be part of the family. When she had told them that she was with child, one would have thought it was their own grandchild Gina was carrying, the way they fussed and went on. It really warmed Gina's heart that they treated her, and the rest of her family, as their own.
Looking down at the letter, she smiled as she saw Maitane's familiar writing.

Dearest Coz,

I have heard the news! Congratulations to both you and Dran, I suspected when last I saw you at the Military Ball, but left before the announcement. I wish you both The Lady's Blessings as you prepare for this addition to your family, well our family! You must tell me all about it. Which physician is attending you? Have you chosen a midwife yet? I suppose it is too early yet to have thought of names. Oh I wish I had been there when the announcement had been made!

I'm sorry that I couldn't stay longer at the ball, but I had to press on, as the rest of this letter will explain. I had wanted a quiet word with you to tell you my news, but the ball was so busy and so were you, after all Dran was the host.

It is hard to know where to start, events have moved so rapidly recently, I can't remember what the situation was when we last spoke at length. Rather than subject you to a long and rambling tale I'll stick to the basics and if there are any gaps, well we can fill them in over tea and scones next time I come home to Mortimer Castle.

Suffice to say that I have moved to Ludlow. It was what we had discussed before Al went into retreat. It was a decision agreed with our good friend Deekay, who is to be the new priest there. When Al went into retreat I had no idea whether he would be able to return to me. I know that I have not known him long, Gina, but the gap that left in my world was immense. I did not know what to do with myself for lack of him, I needed a break. Korna thought to return to Scotland and I decided I might as well go too. We were on our way when the declaration by NNGO was made, That announcement they called a "Notice to Oppressive English Governments." How could I leave England with that gauntlet thrown down? Why, it would seem like abandonment out of fear of reprisal! So, I told Korna I must stay, and he put aside his plans so as to to escort me back South. Poor man, he has been away from Scotland for so long that I wonder if he will recognise his homeland when he returns - the tales I have heard are so grim.

So, there I was, not able to fill in time by a trip to foreign parts and with no sense of purpose. It was not a good place to be, Gina. I determined that something needed to be done and that that "something" would be that I would continue with Al, Deekay and my plans, regardless of what the future brought. I contacted Deekay and arranged to meet him in Ludlow. And then something wonderful happened. Al returned and now things are as they should be, or as I certainly would want them to be.

So here I am, in Ludlow. I have opened a tavern called The Boiling Well, if you want to know why it is so named you will have to come and visit! I went to see the Count's First Secretary in order to get my licence to practice a profession, and then i went and saw him again so that I could study at the University. I know it is strange to do both at once, but I have waited a long time to settle down, and now that I have, well I am eager to get on!

Well that is the short story, though it looks long enough now that I have writ it down. As you can see I am well occupied, and when Al arrives in Ludlow in the next week, I hope to be even better occupied.

Once I am settled, I look for an invite to Evesham, certainly before the birth and I will try to arrange to visit Mortimer Castle even sooner than that. Please let everyone know I am well, and happy, as well as rushed off my feet!

Your loving cousin,

Mai

"Well," she thought to herself, "that answers the question of who I write first!"

So, setting quill to parchment she wrote.

"Dearest Cousin,
Thank you for the well wishes. I am so happy, I cannot begin to tell you. I thought I wanted to wait a bit before children, but receiving this news had made me realize how much I want a family with Dranoel.
Lord Beaker will be attending me, and though I have not chosen a Midwife as yet, I suppose I will probably ask Kenna if I may "borrow" Miss Molly. She did such a wonderful job with Kenna and Mary. And I also have Lorilye with me, so I'm sure I will be pampered and cared for. I do hope you come home soon for a visit though, so that we can celebrate your news as well! Congratulations on your accomplishments! I am so happy for you and Al, as well, and I wish you luck in that area as well. I can't wait to torment, er, spend time with Al and get to know him better.
I'm pleased your tavern is being received so well. I have heard murmurings about from travelers that they stopped in and enjoyed it.
I am sorry that you moved away from Worcester, but I do understand, as I told you when we discussed it. I just like having my family close by.
Well, I do have lots of letters to write, so I will close this for now. I do hope to see you soon. I miss our chats.

With love,
Your cousin,
Gina"

Once finished, she found Lorilye and gave her the letter, instructing her that when she went out for supplies later, to please take that to the Mail Office to have it delivered.
