Penelope_rose
The intimacy she shared with Juliyn caused her heart to soar. The feel of his hand upon her cheek brought a smile to her lips and leaning into his hand she turned her head to kiss his thumb, her eyes twinkling with mischievous intent. The cough of the stable boy brought a blush to her cheeks and clearing her mind of her thoughts, sweetly returned Juliyn's kiss before taking his offered arm.

Jauntily walking alongside him, the fabric of her skirt of a vibrant blue bounced against her legs as she chattered about inconsequential things. Realizing her husband was deep in thought, she tried to lighten his mood and slipping her hand from his arm, stealthily moved it to his tush and goosed him. Walking along as if nothing had happened, Penelope instinctively knew he was glaring at her and thinking of his own version of payback later. A giggle escaped from between her open lips at the thought as she slipped her hand on his arm once again.

Penelope saw Drestakil up ahead and her eyes lit up with joy. Glad that there was someone she felt comfortable with, she smiled at him as Juliyn left her side to greet Lady Gina. Cursory glancing at the other man, Penelope noticed his embarrassment and smiled warmly at him. The feel of Juliyn's hand on the small of her back caused her to look at him and take a step towards him while wrapping an arm around his waist.

Juliyn's question caused her to hold her breath. What if they didn't receive his letter and they had no idea the pair were married. Drest's query about others receiving a letter only managed to heighten her alarm. Yet, Drestakil's charm and compliments managed to make her smile until she cast an eye on Juliyn's cousin, Lady Gina.

The smile offered by Lady Gina, Penelope realized, was only a cover for feelings yet untold. Penelope's mother had raised her to act the same and while there were times she failed, more often than not, Penelope was able to keep her poise and not allow her real feelings to show. Unreserved with Juliyn because she knew without a doubt that he loved her, Penelope tamped down on the unbridled enthusiasm that normally characterized her personality and acted the polite and docile young lady her mother taught her to be and nodded her head towards Juliyn's cousin but not before smiling charmingly at Drest for his introduction.

"Lady Gina, I trust you are... " Penelope was cut short when a startled shout bounced off the walls in the foyer. Looking wildly at Juliyn, she watched as Lady Gina fled the room to where the shout had come from.

Left alone with Juliyn and Drest, she grinned, "Is this a normal occurrence at the Mortimer estate? Did the man open a closet with skeletons?"

Cordelia
Cordelia had had her eyes closed and had not realized that someone had entered the room.

Quote:
GOOD GODS!

She lept out of her chair, swearing in a most unladylike way, but in Gaelic. Her words may not have been understandable, but thier meaning was clear. She had also grabbed the nearest likely looking weapon - the teapot.

She watched in confusion as the man stumbled and... fell? This caused her to vocalness to quiet. She relaxed her grip on the teapot slightly.

He stutters an apology as Gina enters the room. She sets the teapot down on the table again as it becomes apparent that this was some servant.

"Hello, um.. Richard." She paused, unsure of what kind of introduction to give after that little escapade. She decided on a semi-formal one, she needed to save some face... "I'm Cordelia McDermott~Mortimer, Baroness of Worthing. Geoffery Mortimer is my husband." She nods her head to the man and hides her hands in the folds of her skirt.

Drestakil
"Is this a normal occurrence at the Mortimer estate? Did the man open a closet with skeletons?"...but Drestakil didn't really hear her. He was trotting down the hall, pulling his sword over his shoulder, ready to bring it down hard on something, anything, that might be a threat. He entered the main room to find the only threat was to assorted dignities, it seemed. Ladygina was struggling to NOT laugh out loud, Richard was about to destroy his hat, and Lady Cordelia was standing in a defensive posture holding a ...teapot? He held his smile in and turned back down the hall. Penelope and Juliyn were still standing, puzzled expressions, waiting for someone to show them in.

Drestakil motioned to Juliyn, "Nephew, why don't you and the Lady come in and have some...tea. I'm sure there's a servant around here somewhere who knows how to make it...unless you'd prefer something a bit stronger?"

Riding down the road Bart felt a little unsure about the safety of his daughter. Mary had fallen asleep in his lap while he was riding, what if they hit a bump and she fell? He had to be cautious, not drive too fast, and hold her at all times, which made riding the carriage a bit of a struggle, he only had one hand free for that after all. Kenna had fallen asleep next to him and Mary had been dozing off regularly.

His mind was at ease when it concerned Richard, he would do exactly as he had been told in the letter, the only concern with him was his behavior in the presence of the family, he had always been a tad bit clumsy in public, not that Bart minded, he found it rather amusing how the man managed to make a fool of himself over and over again.

As they rode along Bart saw the landmark “We're almost there...” Time had come to wake Kenna up, she wanted to be awake when they arrived, especially after the news from Gina. He moved Mary to his left leg, allowing her to sleep on while holding both her and the reigns in one hand, this way he could wake Kenna up. “Honey? We're almost at the castle. It's time to wake up, we're about to meet up with Gina and the others...” he said while he gently shook her shoulder.

Kenna woke up with ease and she sat up and looked over at her husband.

"I'm sorry, I hadn't meant to sleep the whole way. Just only wanted a nap. Looks like you've had your hands full" she smiled. She had not been used to having him around, but today was different. It would be the first day of their attempt to spend more time together rather than take errands or travel.

Kenna had been busy with trade arrangements, having started a commitment with a dear friend. It had successfully taken off, of course, but had left her little time to do the things she missed nor had she any spare time to be much of a wife and barely a mother.

Bart was endeavoring to be a good Samaritan as well. He had, with his lordship and persuasion, helped some of the towns in Wiltshire settle their debts and keep a positive treasury. It was the least he could do considering all the trials and tribulations as of late.

It had caused a serious strain on their encounters. Kenna was still very much devoted to him, she loved him for as long as she could remember. But even if absence did make the heart grow fonder, did not the tendrils of love need to be nurtured?

They both needed this time, needed each other, now more than ever. It was determined that with the news and situations of war, it would be best spent in the company of family.
"If you can pass her to me, slow the horses and I will hold her" she suggests.

She could tell by the tress and hills that they were close. The smell of the spring that ran far round the property was all she needed to cause a smile on her face. Soon she could relax and get out of these traveling clothes. It would be great to be home again.

"I know we've had little time to say much with all this packing and leaving, but you do know that I love you, right?" she asks him, readying herself to take their daughter, when he was ready.

A messenger arrives, he inquires as to whom is head of the household at this time.

His message is plain and simple.

That the house of Sutton has reached a crucible point, that either it must seek it's birthrights and establish itself or disband.

That the house of Mortimer by marriage is joined with the house of Sutton it is requested that the house of Mortimer rally in support of the House of Sutton and it's current aspirations in Worcester and in regards to the War at hand and it's alliance with the Houses of Aviz and the House of Halliwell.

That in this time of strife the primordial alliances of family and household, oath, and friendship and noblese oblige that is now of total lack in our kingdom as shown by this war, must be re-affirmed. It is the belief of the Linear decendant of the line of Sutton that for the house to survive at this point that elevation of the house, support of the house, and recognition of the accomplishments of the members of the house, such as those of Duke Sutton and Lady Sutton-Mortimer must be publicly affermed, especially as Regent and possessing of the power of the throne in such matters, the house of Mortimer did nothing to support or elevate the house of Sutton, this being a dishonor upon the joining of said houses.

Thusly at this juncture, at this time, the lines must be drawn, the house of Sutton feels unsupported by the house of Mortimer and challenges it to right the situation.

The messenger is obvious about the discomfort that such a presentation carries, but is effective in giving the words proper tone and inflection as he is well aware that although the lords and lady of the house of Sutton have oft supported publicly and outspokenly the house of Mortimer not one kind or more importantly word of outright support has ever been offered in public hall by Mortimer upon the house of Sutton.

Being but a common man sent in employ of an equally common man, well at least of man of no perferment nor precidence that in this light Mortimer can be greatly faulted upon having held the regency, to the messengers mind, he does feel that one house has paid no benefit in return for support from a currently lesser if not elder house.

It is thus and with quick explanation if required that he awaits no response although if bidden he does listen and carry responses offered otherwise he departs, his deed done. The explanation if required is simple, that words at this juncture mean little to be spoken here and not in broader halls, that actions and deeds are the amends and less will not suffice.

As Gina was trying to assess the situation at hand, Sloan, one of the newer servants she had hired to help around the Castle since she had been keeping Lorilye busy with helping here, and Breigan busy with Cheebly at Sutton Estate with all the new Nursery remodeling, came in and said to her in a whisper.
"Begging your pardon M'Lady, there was a man come to the door, he asked about the Head of the Household, but did not give me time to come and get you. But he was going on and on about something to do with Sutton House and Mortimer House, and marriage, and support. He spoke in manner that I could not get in a word. He spoke his piece and left. I know not what he was going on about. But I thought you should know." He gave a slight bow and waited for her instructions.
She looked at him quizzically and said,
"No matter. If he just left without seeking anyone out, then it must not be something that can't wait. So, we'll continue to enjoy our visit, and I will try to find out what the matter was all about when I begin about family business again on the morrow. Now, if you would, please bring in some more tea, and some ale in case anyone wants that instead." As the young mad started backing out of the room, she said, "Oh, and Sloan...please, don't be so nervous. You're doing a fine job here." Smiling encouragingly at him, she watches him grin and turn and walk forward out of the room. Turning back to the activities at hand, she says, "Alright, now where were we?"

I looked up at the Castle. It was the home of my Lord's family and I was graciously given a chance to come and go. I had traveled so much I had to wonder if my Lord even remembered me as a servant. Walking up to the castle, I knocked and hoped I would be welcomed.

--Sloan
No sooner than he got out of the room, then Sloan heard another knock at the door. One thing was sure, he thought to himself, there is never a dull moment when one works for the Mortimers.
Going to the door, he pulls it open to see a very pretty young woman standing there. He bowed slightly, and said,
"Good day how may I help you?"
Kennagillian
The end of the ride had been quiet, Mary still slept, clutching her dolly. She had a beaded sweat beginning to glisten on her forehead and Kenna tried to hold her away so that she could get air. The child always seemed to sleep so hard and hot. Even in the winter she had pushed the covers away and Kenna always had to recover her with her blanket.

The stables seemed to be almost full and the men were busy. One came over to greet them, a man She had seen before.

"Hello, good day to you sir" she told him as he helped her from the carriage seat, being careful to support her arm with which she held her child.

"And to you, milady" he smiled "The Lady Gina is entertaining the family in the hall at the moment. That is if they have not retired to the sitting room for tea. His grace, Lord Drest as well as Master Juliyn are here as well. Master has brought his new bride, The Duchess of Sussex and your Step mother, Lady Cordelia is here as well. She has come alone, with your father, the Prince, having stayed close to home" he tells her as he unhooks the carriage, helping Bart carry their things to the rear entrance of the castle.

"Thank you sir, and that man there.." she points to the man she sees leaving the castle grounds.

"Here on business, a messenger I believe" he tells her.

"Alright" she replies ".. I am waiting for letters to arrive from a lady named Molly Paringer. If anyone arrives with mail, see to it that it is brought straight to my room or person, it is important to me" she tells him.

"Yes, milady, I will surly do it" he nods "Oh yes, I nearly forgot, a mister Richard Bagwell BoCock also arrived this morning. He claims to be the retainer of your husband" he says, looking at Bart for confirmation.

And as they speak Kenna walks round behind them and passes the ladymaid of the house, ordering their things to be carried to the usual room where they will be staying.

"Bart I will be inside, I am eager to see them all" she tells him and enters the corridor leading from the kitchen into the hall. She hears a knock at the front hall as she is nearing the sitting room where she can hear voices.

With all the servants having come round to greet her and her husband, she realizes no one will be answering the door. Just then, a fair haired gentleman she has never met, comes before she can, to answer the knock.

It was the kind lady that Kenna's father had taken in service, the sister to an even sweeter woman to whom they had lost not so long ago in this very house.

"I can take it from here" she tells the gentleman.

With all the repairs having taken place, and the memory no longer as fresh, it was sometimes easy to forget what had gone on here. With a shiver passing quickly Kenna smiled as warmly as she could before saying "Do come in Miss, make your way with me to the sitting room and we can join the others. I do believe we have a house full, so I am told" she felt Mary starting to wake up and put her to her upper shoulder so she could lay her head there comfortably. She waited for Elizabeth to join her.

He could not have turned a brighter shade of red, Not ever in his life. It would be wise to do something quickly to change their minds about his behavior. But how could he do that, and quickly?

"It is delightful to meet your acquaintance, Lady Cordelia and Lady Penelope. A fine testament to England's grace and beauty are you both, if I may say so, that is, with no disrespect or dishonor meant to your sirs of course" he said, folding and unfolding the rim of his already misshapen hat ".. and the Lady Sutton, ever a kind and gracious host, simply glowing" he added proudly.

A servant comes in and announces a guest having spoken at the door and then left. That was odd, he thought, wonder what that had to do with anything?

"Alright, now where were we?"
Lady Sutton asked.

"If I may, I believe we were about to celebrate a wedding and your good news, Lady Sutton" he said, eager to press forward with forgetting how clumsy and stumbling he was.

They had finally arrived, the servants were busy carrying their luggage to the room. Upon hearing that Richard had arrived Bart looked at the man and smiled “Thank you for the information, I am glad he arrived safely..”

Bart turns his head back to Kenna as she speaks to him “Sure, I will try and find Richard so I can give him the funds and instructions that he needs, I'll see you again soon.”

He decided that he had to freshen himself up first, the trip had been long and the weather warm, he couldn't present himself this way.
As Bart was washing his face with a cold wet rag, he could hear Richard in the sitting room “Ah, there he is...” he proceeded to dry his face and walked towards the sitting room.

As he stood in the doorway Bart could see that Richard had already been introducing himself to the family. Bart approached him “Richard, how have you been? I see that you've already met some of the family?”

Through all the activity, and the excitement, Gina thought she heard another knock at the door. She would let Sloan worry with it. Hearing Richard bring her up to speed on the conversation, and smiling at his compliment, she blushed slightly. "Thank you Richard, that's very kind of you. 'Tho, I don't feel like I am glowing much anymore." She can't help but think to herself that instead, she feels like she is being squeezed 'round the middle, and that her dress is getting a bit tighter.
But aloud, she says,
Now, since all the excitement has died down a little, why don't we all sit down and wait for the tea to arrive?" She smiles, and looks at Drest, "And ale of course." Then, suddenly feeling as if she had not eaten in weeks, she said, "And is anyone else fam...er...hungry?"

So much activity! She smiles and nods, trying to keep track of everything. Bart appears at the door and Cordelia knows Kenna and little Mary will not be far behind. Her attention is grabbed when Lady Gina askes if anyone else is hungry. Laughing slightly she says, "I am!"

Drestakil
'It's getting awfully crowded in here,' thought Drestakil. Richard would probably like to get away, but then Bart came through the entryway. The two probably had some talking to do.

Quote:
"And is anyone else fam...er...hungry?"
asked Gina. Cordelia answered that she was and Drestakil suddenly felt a large hollow spot around his middle. It wouldn't do that a Lord and Master should slide off to the kitchen to make up his own meal. He could remember the time years ago when he would have been glad to have any kind of food at all scraped up off the floor, he was so hungry. Those years spent on the rowing bench and then in the East had changed his viewpoint about many things.

Drestakil chuckled and thought of what Penelope and Cordelia must think. This was what Family was...relatives, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles...all popping in unnannounced and welcome...THAT was Family! Servants who were practically family members themselves, given a dignity that was earned as well as deserved. He had seen instances, when he lived in the East, when a servant was beaten and sometimes killed for not doing exactly what was expected. It would be unimaginable for that to happen in the Mortimer household.
