Ladygina
As Lady Cordelia confirmed her news to Kenna, Gina picked up her glass and offered up a toast. "Let me just say this. 'Tis about time our family has had a streak of good luck and happy times. We've had so much turmoil and disaster in all our lives. I only wish that our entire family were here to share in our joys. That includes those traveling, those working, those missing, those that we've lost, and those we have not found yet." Raising her glass high in the air, she says, "To the Mortimers! Cheers!"

Kenna forced a quick smile and picked up her glass to drink to the toast. So many things were running through her mind. It was without will, of course, which she hated. Sometimes when thoughts wind themselves up, the expression on your face can betray your true feelings. She was glad for them. Men and women who marry are often after the simple joys of union, such as having a child. Kenna had somehow never considered that to be the outcome of her fathers marriage. She had only seen it as a mutual friendship, companionship, and an agreement that the two loved one another enough to confess the fact to all.

She suddenly felt like a child again, blushing amidst their gazes at having realized the means with which her newest sibling had come into existence. It had nothing to do with jealousy nor anything rash such as retaliation against Cordelia. In fact, part of her wanted to reach out and embrace the woman, but the recognition of this sudden truth would not let her.

"Yes Cheers, that is.. wonderful news" she managed to say. She wiped her mouth and Mary's with the linen napkin near her spread of food. Then she scooted out her own chair nodding to everyone.

"If you will excuse me I need to lay Mary down for her nap" she told them, smiling still as she cradled her daughter and left the room for the hall that would take her to the sleeping areas near the south end of the castle.

As Kenna spoke, Gina watched her face. She liked to think that she knew her cousin well enough to know what she was feeling by the expressions her face conveyed. But this time, 'twas not as easy. Kenna seemed a little shocked to hear the news, but Gina could not tell if she was happy, though her words said she was. She watched as Kenna got up and excused herself to lay little Mary down for a nap. Looking around the table, she smiled brightly, and said, "If you all will excuse me for a few moments, I think I'll go help Kenna with Mary. I think maybe I should get some practice in ahead of time!" Getting up, she went in the direction Kenna had gone, and found her in one of the sleeping rooms. Going inside, she saw her about to lay Mary down, and cleared her throat, and looking her directly in the eyes, she said, "Alright Cousin, spill it. What is troubling you?"

Kenna looked down at Mary, just about to tell the girl what an idiot her mother was, when she heard someone come into the room. She was almost afraid to turn around, believing that it might be her own father coming to tell her how she had hurt Cordelia's feelings just now, or maybe to ask her if something happened back there. That would be horrible, because contrary to popular opinion, Kenna was unable to lie. She'd do anything in her ability to distract, disarm, and avoid the truth if it were a painful venture, but in the end she would offer it up no matter the consequences.

She nearly bawled with relief at the sight of her cousin being the one to come through the entrance to the room, but she kept her composure. She was too grown to be crying so easily anymore. She had to remember that her daughter was watching.

"Oh it's nothing really. I feel foolish to tell you the truth. I just" she started and stopped, sitting down on the bed beside where her daughter was laying and went on ".. I suppose I just never considered they would, well you know" she said helplessly struggling for words.

Then as quickly as she said it, she tried to smile, shaking her head "..and I know how that sounds, that's why I had to leave. For JAH'S SAKE they're adults, married, blessed by the church, I mean it's ridiculous really for me to behave so irrationally but I never gave it a second thought that Father would.. that he could.. well I can't even say it!" she started in on changing Mary to try and do the deed she came here to do. She knew Gina must think she was the biggest joke ever told to be acting like this. She wished she'd never admitted anything.

The worst part would be facing them all in the morning and knowing that Cordelia would more than likely think that Kenna hated her now. She didn't even want to think about it.

As her cousin began talking, trying to explain what her issue was, Gina realized what the problem was, and she couldn't stop the giggles. Looking at Kenna, she couldn't help it. She knew now that it was the image of her Father and Cordelia....in the act....that was bothering her. Well, not one to pass up an opportunity to harass her favorite cousin, she said, "Oh come now, Kenna, surely you're not thinking of your Father and his wife doing what every husband and wife do?" Seeing the look on Kenna's face and remembering that her cousin had a penchant for throwing things, Gina cleared her throat and tried to stop the giggles. Glancing at little Mary she added with a more serious smile, "Besides, it isn't as if you haven't had your own share of experience. And I guess I can sympathize with you. I was mortified on my wedding night. Scared to death! And that was at the thought of myself and my own husband. I guess, I wouldn't want to think of my parents......" She shook that thought off quickly and said, "I'm sorry Cousin, forgive me. I just had to tease you a bit. But, really, is that all that's bothering you? Is there something more? Something deeper?

At first she wanted to pull one lock of Gina's hair when she heard her muffled giggles. She had predicted as much, but it still ticked her off to watch her cousin enjoy this moment more than Kenna felt she should. Then she scowled instead, realizing that hair pulling was also a very childlike quality that she would have to set to the side with crying. It was absolutely no fun to be grown, none at all.

To make matters worse, Gina had said the words which made the whole situation hit rock bottom for Kenna, as she was trying to not say them for the fact of the matter as well as the ability she had for being quite visual.

But was that all? She'd asked, and Kenna already feeling defensive, wanted to know what she really meant.

What else could there be? Wasn't that enough?

She'd already said the whole thing was a mistake on her part, making such a big deal out of nothing, but why was she feeling so out of sorts to have to hide in her room? She couldn't explain it, it just came over her like a salty wave in the sea, and left her feeling angry in a way that she didn't like, but was it just about the surprise of her father having another baby or.. was it more than Kenna wanted to admit.

She laid Mary gently down on the bed and covered her with the blanket. Then she turned back to Gina and nodded to the adjoined room that had a dressing room just a few feet away.

As Mary talked herself into sleeping, Kenna took a seat and put her head in her hands, sulking.

"I don't know" she answered Gina truthfully ".. the first thing I could think about was Sinda. I mean, Cordelia said it, and I thought about Sinda's face that day when she was in the stables just after your wedding and then all the way back to the very first moment we found out who we were to each other and knew that uncle Drest had found Vice, when we knew he was alive" she started pulling the strings together and untying the knot that had formed in her stomach. She was saying it out loud, but more like a story she was being told, not one she was telling.

"She's always been broken somehow. I don't mean crazy or sad, I just mean that even when she says she loves you, you can tell that something is missing. She was the same then, both times, and I remember wondering why she couldn't give this a chance like I could. She seemed so angry in the beginning and then it turned to numbness. That's what I saw. I don't know much about her except what she's said, but I know she loved her mother and unlike me, she blamed Viceroy in a way, for what happened to her. I could be wrong, we've never talked about it much because after I married Bart our lives changed even more.. but I feel it now, I think. It was like " she tried to describe it in words that she seemed to grasp for, understanding it more now that she was putting the pieces together "..when I looked at Cordelia I saw my mother, Sinda's mother.." she sat back and balled her fists up at her knees ".. and I wanted to ask my father what right did he have to do this again? What was his intentions? You know.. I felt angry so suddenly that I wanted to leave before making a scene because just before then I was so overjoyed with all of us coming together it felt so strange to just attack him when I felt like I should be happy for them instead" she relaxed and looked up at Gina.

"What if something happens to him? Cordelia doesn't deserve that.. Fiona and now the baby.. I don't want history to repeat itself again" she finished, shaking her head again, trying to calm down.

It was true that now, with all of them having come closer, that life would be different. Cordelia would always have the family here to fall back on and if anything should happen. Kenna would not bat an eye about seeing to her children and even if the others never said it, she figured they felt the same. But, given the conditions of the Kingdom, there were no promises to be made. War was an unforgiving wretch, the same factor that had once upon a time, cut them out and scattered them so far from each other that it was only this time they had together to look at.

Cordelia
Cordelia raises her glass to the toast, but she still watched Kenna. There was a look in her eye that expressed worry, and fear. When Kenna leaves, Cor considers going after her, but Gina beats her to it. She looks down Fiona, who, in her mother's distraction, had managed to decorate her face with the food. She sighed and took a napkin, clearing the girl's face, bumping table manners to the top of the list of what to teach Fiona. She glances at Viceroy from under her lashes. She takes his hand and kisses the back of his knuckles. "Vice, dear, would ye mind taking Fiona back to a bed? Ye know how she falls asleep after dinner."

Ladygina
Following Kenna into the adjoining room, she listens to her try to explain what she's feeling, and watches her face. Gina knew something else had to be there, and her words confirmed it. She was concerned Vice would leave Cordelia, Fiona and the new babe, just as he had left her and her Mother, and Sindaia and her Mother. She walked over to her and sat beside her. Placing her hand upon Kenna's knee she says, "Kenna, I know you're scared, not just for Cordelia, and the children, but for yourself as well. You don't want to see Vice repeat the same things he did in his past. You don't want him to hurt others as he hurt you, Sindaia, and your Mothers. But, I like to think that your Father is a changed man, and that he lives our motto now. I like to think he will be there for Cordelia and the children, for you and your child, and for Sind...." Her voice trails off for she has not heard from Sindaia in ages....since Vice's term as Regent. "But, we just have to have faith. We can't dwell on the past and always think that old mistakes will be remade.
And your Father deserves happiness, doesn't he? I mean, I can only assume Cordelia makes him happy, and I've seen him with Fiona. He seems happy to me at least."
She thinks of something else, and not wanting to say the wrong thing, she gently adds, "And, I know there must be a touch of jealousy there Kenna. But 'tis normal. Do not feel bad about it. You didn't have your Father for most of your life. You missed out on a great deal. And it's going to be a little difficult seeing him raising those children, when he wasn't there to raise you. And I know you feel the same way about him not being there for Sind. But, you'll handle that Kenna. I know you will. You'll handle it like a Mortimer. With grace and maturity." She thought of her own parents for a moment and said, "Just be happy for him Kenna. Be thankful that you have him now. And that he is here to have happiness. I miss my parents every moment of every day. Just be happy for him...."

She appreciated Gina, for listening and for putting up with her. Still, her heart and embarrassment still ached and she needed to think.

"Could you do something for me?" she asked, getting up to pull out a sheet of fresh parchment from the bureau by the corner wall. She dabbed the colorful quill into ink and scratched out a short letter.

She folded it quickly and handed it to Gina, holding the woman's hand as she spoke "You are, of course, right about most everything. Don't worry over me, I just need some rest. Give this to Juliyn's lady, tell them all I am dreadfully sorry.. I will be resting for a few hours and see most of them tomorrow morning" she hugs her cousin and kisses her cheek.

"Thank you for coming to talk to me, I think I needed that most of all" she smiles, waiting in the doorway with her now.

Letter reads:

"Dear Lady Penelope,

If you will accept, I extend a challenge to you and your husband. It will be myself and my man against you and yours. A hand of cards will be our war, and we shall see who claims the victory as well as the laughs. Should be good fun if you agree. I will look forward to seeing you..

Meet us in the Gardens at Seven chimes, I will see to it that we have snacks.

Your Cousin in Law,
Kenna "CardShark" Mortimer"

Viceroy
Viceroy nods and picks up Fiona leaning against the large oak staff. He held her close and walked into the other room to lay her down. Feeling a slight breeze, the scene changed. She stood there looking down at the grave. "Father.... why did you leave me so alone," she said with a tear dropping down her face. A chill ran down his back. A dread feeling crept over him and he shook slightly feeling the color flee from his face. Pushing against the oak staff, he closed his eyes hearing whispers of words. He held onto Fiona tight her body sleeping against him.
Ladygina
She listens to Kenna as she shakes herself from her mood and asks her to deliver a letter to Penelope. She smiled at Kenna as she explained her mood away with fatigue. Taking the letter from her, and hugging her and returning the kiss upon her cheek, she says, "I'll do this for you if you do something for me. I want you to rest. I don't want you to think about things. I want you to let your mind wander to a field of flowers and sunshine, and just rest. I want you to then wake feeling refreshed and back to your old self." Patting her hand, she doesn't give her a chance to answer. She heads out the door and back down the hallway to the Dining Hall. As she rounds the corner, she sees Geo heading in the opposite direction with Fiona. She smiled thinking it must be nap time for Fiona as well.
When she got back to the table, she went to Lady Penelope and said quietly,
"Kenna asked me to give you this letter. She apologizes for not spending much time here getting to know you but she is dreadfully tired." She placed the letter in Lady Penelope's hand and smiled at her.

Then she made her way to her chair, catching Cordelia's eye, she nodded and smiled, a reassuring smile that said all was alright and nothing was to be taken personally with Kenna's departure. She looked around the table and announced, "Kenna wanted me to give her love to you all and apologize for her departure, but she is exhausted and needs to rest. She will see most of you in the morning." With that, she takes up eating again. She hoped the conversation would begin to flow again so there wasn't an awkward silence for her to fill.... Because she was too engrossed in eating to talk! The food was fabulous! Rose had indeed outdone herself.

Viceroy
The color drains from his face holding onto her. He didn't even notice LadyGina walking by. Instead, he was locked in a vision. All around him, snow was falling, she had grown up. She stood in front of a grave crying. A boy stood next to her right and Kenna stood to her left. He saw as Kenna wrapped her arms around her. "I know. He was my father too. It wasn't his time," she said trying to comfort her, but she was falling to pieces having lost her father for a second time.

The boy stared at the grave and shook his head. He looked at the two girls with a sense of puzzlement. There was no connection to this event like what the ladies felt. That was obvious. In a matter of fact, he looked bored. Taking a sword out, he swished it to the left, swished it to the right and nearly hit the grave stone with the blade. The girl looked in almost shock. "How could....," she let escape.

He laughed and danced. "He is but dust now. I didn't know him, but I will pay all of those who did our family wrong! They shall die one by one. My father was a peacemaker. I won't make that mistake! Let the dogs of war know that I come after all who dare trounce my family. I shall show them what a true grudge is," the boy said cackling almost insane with the surge of power from his words.

Viceroy stood there watching the scene having trouble catching his breathe and standing them almost still. The cold wind harsh against his fingers and face. He shivered and the chill struck him to the bone. Fiona wiggled a little in his arms due to the shiver causing him to lightly rub her back unconsciously.
Drestakil
Drestakil wondered how Richard was getting along at the servant's table in the kitchen. He hadn't heard any commotion from there, but it WAS a thick wall. Kenna excused herself and left the table, Gina followed her.

Soooo...Cordelia and Vice were having a baby. Gina and Dran were too. This could get interesting. Drest wasn't surprised that Gina was expecting. Vice, however, was getting a little old to have a young child to raise. A girl wouldn't be as much of a problem since the ladies took care of her education. A boy, though, would need his father's guidance. He would need to learn to ride, there was swordplay, physical workouts. A stable hand could teach him to take care of a horse, but a father taught his son how to CARE for a horse.

Drest shook his head, clearing away the thoughts. There was time for all that later. Right now he would concentrate on potatoes. Rose made these great baked potatoes that tasted like nothing else he'd ever eaten. There was some kind of seasoning on it that made it absolutely delicious.

Cordelia
She watched Viceroy leave with Fiona, perhaps he would be able to talk with Kenna. She sighs softly and turns back to her now cold plate of food. She looks up as Gina re-enters the room, giving Penelope a letter from Kenna. Gina catches her eye and nods, Cor feels some of the tightness in her chest ease.

It wasn't so much the words but the tone in Kenna's voice that caught Penelope's attention. About to congratulate the two women, Penelope lowered her fork to her plate and and began playing with her food so she wouldn't have to look at Cordelia nor Juliyn's cousin as the news of Cordelia's pregnancy sank in Kenna's mind.

Grateful to Lady Gina for the toast, Penelope's fingers left the fork and immediately picked up her wine glass. Hoping the toast would ease the tension, Penelope murmured, "Cheers." Her eyes immediately flew to Kenna as Juliyn's cousin made her excuses to leave. Silence reigned around the table as moments later, Lady Gina excused herself and followed Kenna. Vowing then and there, Penelope silently pledged to pray every day to Jah that she and Juliyn would be blessed with other people's children and not upset the family by announcing their own "addition."

Soon, the table had been deserted and only Cordelia, Drest, and Juliyn were with her. At a loss for words, Penelope blurted the only thing that came to mind. "Drest, do you have children?" Genuinely curious about this uncle of Juliyn's, Penelope listened for what he had to say.

Studying Lady Gina's face as she came back in the dining room, she was surprised by the letter from Kenna. Thanking Lady Gina, Penelope turned her attention to the parchment on the paper. A smile graced her lips as she read the missive. Leaning comfortably against her husband, Penelope showed him Kenna's letter. "Looks like your cousin would like to test her card playing skills against ours, love. Are you up for the challenge?" Penelope's eyes danced over his features as she waited for his reply.
