Kennagillian
It was so hard to see him strain, to watch him try and recover his memories. Kenna looks at him honestly and explains as best as she can.

"Gina and I began gathering records shortly after we met. They were scattered all about England and had never really been looked after in quite awhile. The county's clerk of Plymouth was a frail withered old man and he'd put many of them together himself over the years. He'd said at one time our family's heraldry was originally last held by Roger and his wife Ana before they decided to hire his uncle to oversee the task. He mentioned to me on a second visit that there were wars and famine, sickness. I got the impression that this would be during the time that the family branched out and lost touch. When the rouges came through town they often targeted the churches first, setting them on fire he said. No one was there with enough vested interest to truly protect our history. After our private meeting, I had good intentions. However, Gina wasn't always able to travel and neither was I, so we've not found much more to add since. As you can see the recording of births and deaths are quite collected for a stretch of time. Then it branches wide and fades" she traced her finger across the page " and from everyone I have met in England their families are much the same. We've all been blessed with many cousins, some we never knew about" she looked at him and smiled genuinely "I really wish I could be of more help. If you think you'd like to come with me, we could visit the College mid week together and go through the scrolls I have in our halls? If nothing else you could learn more about.. well you could learn more about your family" she said, reaching out to touch his hand.

"I believe what you say to be true, you know. It is tragic what happened, but with this proof now at least you know who you are and everything you have to face in the future will not be as lonely when you have family to support you. I did not suffer injury as you have which made me forget, but I was young and on my own. I was told I was abandoned at birth, but that's another story I can tell you sometime. I don't care what anyone tells you though, knowing where you came from puts everything into a center for you, gives you a perspective on life. But really, you poor soul! A Mortimer.." she shook her head candidly "..you could have done better for yourself, I think" she kidded, aiming to lighten the seriousness of the moment.

Reynhard listens to the young woman, to the empathy in her voice, finding it comforting that she, too, has been in a similar position... not knowing her family after being told she'd been abandoned.

If there are more complete records somewhere else, I'd be more than happy to accompany you to them. Just remembering my name and the bits and pieces I've been able to discern so far, has made me thirsty for the rest of the story, whatever it may be.

He thought about what might be stored at the Heraldry College Kenna spoke of. Perhaps some record of where he and his mother lived, why she had a French nick-name for him, perhaps even an old diary.

I don't care what anyone tells you though, knowing where you came from puts everything into a center for you, gives you a perspective on life. Reynhard nodded as she spoke the words, then smiled at her next remark... feeling his mood lighten for the first time since this journey began. But really, you poor soul! A Mortimer...you could have done better for yourself, I think.

At this point, any family is better than none at all, he answered with a chuckle of his own. Although, I have heard it said that Jah lets us choose our friends, to make up for not being able to choose our family.

He sipped the last of his tea and set the cup down on the table. Pick any day you like this week and I will make myself available to accompany you to the College of Heraldry. I can't thank you enough for this offer of help with my search.
Kennagillian
Although, I have heard it said that Jah lets us choose our friends, to make up for not being able to choose our family. He said that and she laughed in agreement. That was sooooo true.

"It's no trouble, I would be honored. I say three days from now I can have myself ready to accompany you. I would go now but I have to tie up a few things. I am sure you do want to know more, I know I would still like to know more about my mother and her family.. " she stood abruptly and hugged him kissing first the left then the right of his cheeks.

"There, now you'll learn I'm a lover when it comes to kin. I can't help it. I hope you don't mind. That's the good quality, I'd like to think. The bad side of me is that I am more nosy than I care to admit, bossy sometimes so you'll have to tell me to mind my own business, and I've been told I am reckless but I prefer to call it independent. I know you are a weaver by trade right? What else can you tell me?" she asked, beginning to see it was just as important for them to get to know each other as it was for him to know about his past.

A few days is little to wait for answers when it's been so long already, he said in response to her offer to take him to the records. It will give me time to get a few more things done around my shop.

He stood as she did, then felt a blush rise to his face as she kissed his cheeks. He could feel the warmth of friendship as well as kin exude from her embrace. A good quality indeed, he said, replying in kind with a kiss on each of Kenna's cheeks.

They walked toward the door together as she asked about him. I know you are a weaver by trade right? What else can you tell me?

Well, I thought it was merely a fortunate happenstance when I moved from Shrewsbury to Ludlow, and found the property where I set up my shop, and the cottage down the road attached to my fields. The couple that lived there were happy to have me take over the place, and I was so appreciative, I hired them both to help me out. Cranston has been a great help with my workshop and my sheep, and Ezzy... is just amazing, looking after my goods, cooking for us, keeping me organized. It was like they had known me all along.

It wasn't until after my nightmare last night... the memory of my attack on the road... that I found out why. They were the ones who helped me recover.
He related the story Ezzy had told him while she calmed him the night before, then shook his head, still a bit bewildered. I'm still amazed that it's such a small world, and I could have found them like that. He took a breath and shook his head. It's like finding two families all in the same day.

Reynhard stopped at the door and looked at Kenna as he pulled his cloak around his shoulders. Other than that, there's not much to tell. My life around here has been most uneventful. That's why I'm so anxious to find out about my past. Who knows what I was like before?

As he said his goodbyes and headed out the door, back toward his shop, he thought about the second dream he'd had the night before, about being in that rowdy tavern. Could it be he had been a cad before his attack? Was that what had prompted it... or was it something to do with the man Gina and Drest had eluded to? Perhaps his trip to the heraldry college in a few days would answer that.

Several weeks later....

Quote:
Dear Reynhard

I have to apologize for my neglect. There were important matters that I had to attend to. I have put you off for long enough. If you can come, I would be able to escort you to look at the scrolls and documents you wished to see. I hope this letter fins you in good health and good spirits.

Regards,
Kenna

With the seal, she poured the wax and set it, allowing it to cool. An hour later the letter was on it's way to Lichfield. Kenna spent the day at the castle, guiding Mary from room to room saying "No no. Ah Ah ah.. come here. That's a good girl.. OH! don't touch that, it's sharp" and cursing Uncle Drest for leaving his knives lay about.

Sometime later, in Lichfield..........

It was well into the evening and Gina was sitting in front of the fire, contemplating the way of things of late. Not that she was unhappy, but she was a little sad. There had been so much drama in the family lately, and even throughout England. People fighting, not just disagreeing, but being downright nasty and hurtful. Dranoel was hardly ever home and she longed for him. She missed Kenna even though she lived in the same town, for they rarely saw each other. The rest of the family were scattered about so much she rarely saw them either, and she missed them terribly. She thought of Drest. She had bonded with him on that fateful night so long ago, and he was like a second Father to her, rather than a Cousin...or was he her Uncle? Oh, blast it, she never could remember what their relation was! But, whatever name was attached to their familial connection, she felt closer to him than any of the other male family members. She wanted him to be happy, to settle down, but he seemed to be one who had to be "unattached" and free to come and go as he pleased.
She missed those family members they had lost over the years as well. Whether it be to death, or because they were missing, she thought of them often. Loren, Rae, Sindaia, Gabe, Cikaya, Maitane....all of them.
She missed Geo's servants, Michael and Angela......
And she worried for Geo....He and Cordelia were going through their own personal Hell right now......Fiona was missing.
Shaking her head, she just chalked her emotions up to melancholy and shrugged the sadness off her shoulders. She had a beautiful baby girl sleeping upstairs. She should be happy.....she was happy....wasn't she??
Just then, Lorilye came in and announced that the Guard had let some folks in the gate. She had a small smile on her face, and Gina asked who was there at that hour. Lorilye said simply
"Family." Gina went to the front door and saw them all outside. She broke into a wide grin and clasped her hands together as she saw Drest. Then looking over his shoulder she saw.....Lady Sara Jane!!! What a nice surprise!! She was just running out to greet them when she saw the cart. She stopped in her tracks. The last time anyone had shown up at her house with a cart, there was a body in it....Maitane...dead, murdered...
Not wanting to know what, or who was in the cart, but needing to know all the same, she walked over to it and looked down. Her mouth dropped in shock. She cried out
"Gabe?!?" He was alive! Looking at Drest, she could not utter another word. Thankfully Lorilye had followed behind them and took over. "M'Lord Mortimer, please, everyone come inside. Let's get this young man cleaned up and assess the damage."

Drestakil
A servant came to the gate, saw who it was and scurried away, returning in almost no time with Lady Gina. It was plain she was confused until she caught sight of Drestakil, still on his horse, then saw Sara Jane. She broke into a wide smile and almost clapped her hands for joy. The she caught sight of the cart. Her smile left and she slowly came round to see who was in it. Her face was a study in shock.

Drestakil slid down off his horse and caught her, "Young Lady, you'd better get inside and get things started. Gabriel isn't in good shape. He's very weak and I think he's hurt inside."

The servant, Lorilye, said "M'Lord Mortimer, please, everyone come inside. Let's get this young man cleaned up and assess the damage." She took over for Drest, supporting Lady Gina. Drest walked over to help Lady Sara Jane dismount, then heaved Gabe up on his shoulder and walked into the manor house. There was a large bed in a guest room. Drest strode into the room and laid Gabe on the bed. He ripped off the man's shirt and sliced the pant legs off with his knife. Sara Jane had cleaned a lot of the blood and dirt off, but there was still more to be done.

Gina was standing in the doorway, still looking confused and shocked. Drestakil smiled, "You might say he 'fell into our laps'. I had no idea who he was until I saw his medallion. He said something about running from the gallows. Either he didn't run fast enough or was beaten first. Anyway, Sara Jane and I gave him some food and water. He perked up and mounted his horse, anxious to get here. When we got here I didn't know where anyone lived, but the innkeeper did and loaned us the cart. Otherwise, we'd be staying in the inn till morning." While talking Drest had stood aside to let the servants do what they did best. Gabe was in good hands. If he made it this far, he'd make it all the way.

Drestakil put his arm around Gina's shoulders and led her into the great room. She sat down beside Sara Jane while Drest sat in a large chair.

"Is there the slightest chance a man can get some ale around here?"

She watched in numb shock as the servants did their job. Gabe was a mess, thought it seemed Sara and Drest had done a good job of cleaning his wounds prior to coming here.
She listened as he explained how they came to be in Gabe's company, but it was as if she were hearing it all in a dream. She couldn't wrap her head around the fact that Gabe was alive!
Drest steered her into the Great Room and she sat beside Sara. She still wasn't sure she could find her voice.
What broke her silence was the next words out of Drest's mouth:
Drestakil wrote:
"Is there the slightest chance a man can get some ale around here?"

She couldn't help herself, but she started laughing! Nervous laughter she was sure, but laughter nonetheless.
"I'm sure we can have someone round some up for you Cousin."

Sara_jane
The Estate was grand, even at night. Even though it had been only a couple of weeks all the bustling around with servants and such made her feel a bit awkward. The calm and silence she had felt had grown on her. Furthermore; she wanted to see her trio. Her heart was anxious for them now. They were so close it almost hurt.

Sara had quietly followed everyone into the house with Gwaine beside her. He still hadn't said a word. They were both holding things for the pups and a pup reach respectfully. Once they were inside Gwaine took the sack of things from his mother and went to set up the puppy pen by the fire. In turn Sara thus followed the small throng of people to the guest room and watched the servants work from behind Gina. Inwardly, she was proud of the knowledge she knew that helped. The dream of being a healer was still with her and she hoped once she had truly settled down she could begin her studies again.

Before Drestakil and Gina left the guest room Sara slipped away to check on Gwaine. She found him sitting by the fire petting and playing with the pups. Now was not the time to talk with him about what was troubling him so she sat and waited for Drest and Gina, which didn't take anytime at all.

Thanks Kenna for this lovely holiday gift.
Drestakil
"Well, after traipsing through the countryside for days, fighting off bandits, saving fair damsels in distress and pulling the sword from the stone, I should think so." He sighed, "It's always nice to be home, though. Even if I don't know all the house customs."

A servant entered the room carrying a tray with cups and a teapot on it. Drestakil counted the cups...one, two, three...and frowned, "Although, you would think that SOME customs would have been communicated to the servants just in case a certain someone visited and asked for refreshment. You would THINK that certain preferences in that matter would have been made known."

Should he tell Gina that he had asked Sara Jane's permission to court her? Probably not right now...one shock at a time. It would be a shock to most of the family that Uncle Drestakil was courting someone. The other shock would be who that someone was.

Gabriel_mortimerross
Gabriel tossed and turned, he had falled into a deep sleep now that he was in a place that was safe.

Images of Scotland floated though his mind, the hard won fights in the chambers of the Consititutional Convention, the meetings late into the night with members, the candles buring low while passionate speeches are where made. His mind flashed to the aged and beauitful chambers of the Lyon's Court, the moonlight filling his office while he scribbled off letters and had stacks of tables and charts. Times back then where good, his work was honest and the nation was new and had an air of possibility. Just as the darkness that came with the overcast clouds, the gathering of the masses outside the windows of the Lyons Court. The streets filled with people who where enraged and the spite in their chants could be heard at Gabriel's Estate outside the Scottish captail city. Insitutions that he helped to be established where being torn down and soon a dark reign of terror swept the nation, he became an outlaw in his own nation.

His mind recalls as clearly as the daylight the day inwhich he was arrested, Treason? his mind could not wrap itself around it, he was imprisioned and beaten, thrown into a dark hole to be forgotten about, far away from the light of truth and reason. Gabriel was hauled infront of a trial, a mockery of justice and soon things that where points of pride where hurled at him as inditments for a crime. Again he was returned to the darkness, his mind constently repeting his sentance, Death; to be hung until half dead, his entrails to be cut from his body and burnt before his living eyes, his limbs to be torn from his body and finally, his head to be severed for the crowds enjoyment. When the time came for this to happen, his body took over, anger filled within him the likes of which he had never known before. Before he realized what he had done, the guards lay dead, and blood covered him. He had committed murder, he had broke the most important vow to Jah, he killed a creature that he had promised to love and guide. He ran, ran as fast as his legs could take him, far away from a nation that had abandoned him and blamed him for their ills.

The nightmare of what his life had become was too much for Gabriel to take, he jolted up from the bed in which is lay, startling the sevents tending to his broken and battered body, cold sweat drenched his body.

What? Hun? oh right...i'm home now he muttered to himself. His wounds had been dressed and the little sleep had renewed him. He thanked the servents for their quick work and dressed in the new set of cloths they had provided for him. He made his way every so carefully into the Great Room where Dres and Gina where. He smiled at the sight of Gina, it had been so long since they have seen eachother, he embraced her long, and walked over to one of the sofas in the room and poured himself a cup of tea.

He raised his glass To Family and took a sip of the tea Now, tell me what I have missed He looked between Dres and Gina and noticed an awkard look on Dres face Have I interupted something?
--Gwaine_dephoenix
Gwaine was tired but glad to be back among family. Even if he didn't know them all that well. With his mother's help he dismounted and took out the pups from his saddle bag and handed her one. They both carried some of the other things the pups needed like the pen and water dishes. Once they were inside he managed to take what his mother had and take it to the Great Room and set the things up by the fire.

His mother went off to check on the man named Gabriel, whom for some reason he didn't trust. He wasn't sure if he himself had seen something or if what he had seen in the man's pain filled gaze towards his mother was real. Nor was he sure she saw it.

He heard her come in by the sound of her footsteps but he didn't look up or turn to look at her. Instead he continued to play with Copper and Lily. It didn't take Sir Drestakil and Gina to join them and to his surprise Gabriel joined them shortly there after. The man was like a ball that bounced. How he could be up and walking around already he had no idea.

Curiosity got the better of Gwaine and he looked towards Gabriel when he sat on the sofa. He still looked tired and bruised. He still hand a lot to lean about men and the meaning of so many different things.

_______________
Gabriel_mortimerross
Gabriel looked between Gina, Dres, and Sara. He knew from the look on everyones face that he had walked into something that did not involve him. Gabriel slowly looked around the room, looking for an escape. Sitting by the fire he noticed Gwaine looking over at him. Gabriel strained to get up and hobbled over to him. Augh! he grunted as he sat down by Gwaine How are you doing kido?
--Gwaine_dephoenix
He watched Gabriel approach and sit by him in awe. Gwaine hadn't expected it and wasn't sure quite what to make of it. He looked to his mother for reassurance and received the typical nod and smile she would give him. If she wasn't worried he shouldn't be.

"I'm glad to be home. I am tired and looking forward to seeing my little brother and sister's" he answered honestly

______________
Gabriel_mortimerross
Gabriel nodded as the boy spoke.

Aye, it is good to be home. You dont realize how important family is until you dont have it. So, how did you like your adventure out into the real world?
