Drestakil
Drestakil sighed, "I'm holding up just fine." He smiled, "Remember...Vice and I were separated for years. We never really got to know one another as brothers. We weren't close. I respected him, but...," he trailed off.
What could he say? Gina probably knew Viceroy better than his own brother. Even as kids the two of them weren't chummy or buddy-buddy. Vice was always serious, angry much of the time at their father. Drest, being second-born, didn't have the load of responsibility that Vice had to carry, being first-born.
When Viceroy left the family Drestakil inherited that burden. He didn't have the head for managing a large estate. He felt sorry for Viceroy, but also grew to resent him. Drestakil resented Viceroy for being released, for being gone, for making him shoulder a burden he shouldn't have had to.
The resentment had long since passed. The years have a way of curing those things. What the years couldn't do was bring the two men closer. They respected one another. They were fond of one another. They may have even loved one another, in a way.
Drestakil was more concerned about the effect this would have on the family. To lose someone so central to everything that made this family what it was could be rough. There was one thing about the Mortimer Family, though...through good times and bad times they looked out for one another. This would be no different.
"We will make it through this," he said as he guided her out the door to the carrriage.
