> [RP] Mortimer Castle

Drestakil
Drestakil rode up to those familiar gates. The guards recognized him and let him through without ceremony. The stable boy took his horse and smiled at Drest, "It's good to see you back, Milord."

Drest chuckled, "You have no idea how good it is to BE back." And it was true. This was home in a way that Salisbury and Lichfield couldn't be.

"Whose carriage is that?" he asked the boy. "It looks awfully....royal."

The boy looked over at the carriage, "That's Queen Cordelia's. Her and her bunch got here earlier today." He pointed at another carriage, "That one is Lady O'Neill's. Lady Sutton is here and there's a man came with the Queen and Richard is here and the Queen's maid, who, if you ask me, he's sweet on...."

Drest held up a hand to stop the flood of information and family history about to pour forth. "Thank you very much and make sure you rub down my horse before you leave." Drest turned around, pulling his gloves off and slapping the dust from his pants. He entered the main door and almost knocked Richard over.

Drest grabbed him, "Oh, so sorry, Richard. I didn't know you were standing there." Farther down the hall Lori, the Queen's maid, was standing. "Hello, Lori. Good to see you again."

He swept past Lori, grabbed a kitten off a table. The tiny thing was about to knock a vase into the floor. He held it, petted it, calmed it down and walked into the main room. Yes, there were Kenna and Gina. Cordelia was sitting close to a young man Drest hadn't seen before. Or maybe he had. His memory for people had never been the best.

"If I were a suspicious man, this would be a very suspicious scene. I can see all sorts of rumors popping up concerning a meeting of the former Queen of England and certain members of the Mortimer Family."

Drestakil chuckled, "But...I'm anything but suspicious and so such things would never cross my mind." He held the kitten up, "Does this terror belong to anyone?"

Ken listened to Kenna and he nodded to her.

"I can understand and know you ment no disrespect, and your hesitation or more questioning of me. I would do the same actually if i was in your position. " he listened to her as she mentioned a uncle, and he was aware it would not be in his best intrest to cross them, though he would never do such a thing he respected Cordelia too much to bring her harm or heartache.

As Gina listened to Kenna speak of their family, and their expectaions, she inwardly agreed. This man had been married once, and whilst Gina knew not what went on behind their closed doors, she would think that he would have fought harder to make his marriage work. She only hoped he did not go back on his word, for she would hate to have the wrath of the Mortimers come down on him.
When Kenna spoke of her Uncle Drest, Gina's face alit in a broad smile. Drest was very dear to her, almost like a father in her own father's absence. Gina knew should Kenrich break his word, there would be no running from Drest. But as long as he treated her with the respect she deserved, he would be welcomed by Drest, as the other family members.
Just then, as if he were beckoned, Drest breezed into the room, holding a tiny kitten. Without thought, Gina rose and went to him, wrapping him in a hug.
"Drest, it's so good to see you! Where did you find this little critter?"

Drestakil accepted a much welcome hug from one of his favorite cousins and said, "This 'critter' was wreaking havoc in the main hall." He handed the kitten to Gina, "Better get rid of it. You know that old saying, 'Where there's one kitten, there's a thousand...' or something like that."

He looked around the room, "Cordelia, it's wonderful to see you again. How are the kids? Kenna, it looks like I'll be taking you up on your offer of help in moving."His brow furrowed, "This gentleman, however, I do not know and it seems I should."

Drest stepped towards Kenrich, right hand outstretched, "Good day, Sir. Welcome to Mortimer Castle. I am Drestakil Mortimer. We're fairly informal here, so if you need formality in a greeting, you'd best go to Westminster. I understand they're big on that sort of thing there."

Taking the kitten from Drest, she watched as he greeted Kenrich, wondering how he would react to the news that this man was his sister-in-law's new suitor....
She excused herself for a moment, going out into the hall to find Sloan and have him put the kitten outside, giving him instruction to make sure it stayed out there. No doubt it belonged to one of the servant's children. Then she went back into the drawing room to see how things would play out....

She smiled, surprised and happy to see her Uncle arrive into the room with great presence.

Kenna nodded to him agreeing to his acceptance of help. She knew he would soon see it her way before all was said and done. She was happy to help though, excited even.

Still she found it hard not to laugh at how he'd come in like a breeze holding onto the very same animal she had just compared him to. Life seemed to be quite the jester, funny indeed.

She waited on the edge of her seat for Kenrich to tell his name, for either one or both of them to say again what had already been said. In some small way, she almost worried that Kenrich might be overly beaten by her speech to talk again. She hoped that he might keep in mind that even though they were truthful about Cordelia's protection that he did have room to breath.

She watched Gina leaving and wondered if she found time to get her giggles out in the hall. She looked at Cordelia, trying to read her emotion. The woman had quite the poker face right now.

She sat still, letting the others continue speaking. Best just to watch for now.

Ken was with the ladies when a gentlemen entered, he looked fimilar to him, ken thought maybe he talked to him in passing.

"Hello Drestakil, i am Kenrich Tudor" he said, "and thank you your family has been very nice and welcoming" he said to him alittle nevrously.

As Kenrich spoke of the welcoming nature of the family, Gina couldn't help but nearly laugh out loud, covering her mouth, and trying to pretend it was a cough. She felt a bit bad for the man, for while they had been welcoming, they had also been a questioning fire team. Anyone else in his shoes would have felt as if they were being tortured. But he held his own with the questions. Answering, Gina thought, honestly and with heart.
Gina spoke up, "So, Drest, you're finally ready to make this Castle a home once again?"

Drestakil
"I hope so, I really do," Drestakil said as he released the hand of Kenrich. Drest stepped over to where Cordelia was sitting, took her hand and bowed over it, "...a pleasure to see you again, Cordelia." As he said that, Drest was remembering all the other times he had done this very thing and it seemed that every time he met Cordelia, he was a bearer of bad news. He was the one who had told her of her daughter's kidnapping. The next time he had seen her was at Vice's funeral ceremony. There were one or two others, but this was the first time he had no unfortunate news to give her. Just a simple greeting. It was a nice feeling, for once.

He walked over to a table, "Yes, I am moving into the castle. You," and he nodded in Gina and Kenna's directions, "have all moved away to Lichfield. Yes, I know it's not that far, but I was all the way down in Salisbury, risking life and limb every time I wanted to see one of you. So, I sold everything in Salisbury, bought a mill up in Lichfield and almost moved up there. At the last moment, something told me to settle in here." As he said this he removed his sword belt, knives and bow and arrows, setting all on the table.

Drest sat down and started looking around him, searching for something that he apparently thought ought to be there and wasn't. "One of the first things I'm going to have to teach the servants is...when I am here there should be ale," and he motioned a servant over and told him to bring a bottle and some mugs.

It was so easy to relax with Drest in a room. He just made the whole place feel better. It was even easier to imagine the two in front of her as not such a threat, not something so obscure or painful. That maybe their family was actually mending itself rather than being slowly driven apart. Viceroy would want them to be happy, it wasn't up to anyone to say how that would happen.

"Ah now, don't give them a hard time. They'll be round with it soon enough" Kenna laughed "you just have to remember to be patient" she shook her head at Gina. He was so funny about ale. It was a long time joke that brought on great laughs within the family.

She told Kenrich "My uncle is a bit of a devout ale drinker" she went on"likes it for breakfast even" she chuckled.

"I have to say I am quite pleased to have you so close. Best decision you've ever made, in fact. What about you Cordelia? Have you given any thought to relocating here, with us?" she asked. She hoped her step-mother had given it some thought, that maybe if she mentioned it, Kenrich would in good mind help her agree to being here. It was, after all, a place he was familiar with.

Ken chuckled at Kenna comment about her uncle. Then Kenna had mentioned about relocating he was assuming she was speaking of Merica, though he did know the county very well, he also knew how much Cordelia loved Sussex and how happy she was to return.

Drestakil
Drestakil smiled at the suggestion that Cordelia might want to move to Mercia. He had the feeling she was rooted in Sussex. Vice was the same way. He might visit other places, but HOME was Sussex. Drestakil had spent some time there in many of the towns. It had some nice people, but was like every other part of England...a good thing, in his opinion.

A servant walked in carrying a tray with a bottle of ale and one mug. "Milord Drestakil?" He held the tray at Drest's level, "Your ale, Sir."

Drest gave him a bleak look, "Young man, did it never occur to you that someone else MIGHT possibly want some ale besides me?" The servant looked confused. "Obviously, it didn't," Drest answered himself. "I'm sure the Lord Kenrich would appreciate a mug of the finest ale in all England."

He took the bottle of ale, the mug in the other hand, poured a full mug and handed it to Kenrich, "For you, Sir. Enjoy it, savour it, let it pass slowly over your tongue and down your throat. I promise you it will prove itself."

It was good to see many of the family here, all at once, including, of course, Cordelia. Kenrich looked to be a good man. Drest made a mental note to ask what family he was part of and promptly joined in the chatting back and forth. Naturally, Cordelia and Kenrich would NOT be moving out of Sussex. No surprise there.

Kenna and Gina kept the conversation going while Drest slipped out of the room and upstairs. He told the servants there to make up the Master's Bedroom for him, set a fire in the fireplace and keep some ale stocked there. Down in the kitchens, Gina having taken Rose and Liza with her to Sutton Estates, he talked to the cooks about a regular schedule of meals.

As he walked out into the main hall, it suddenly struck him...where were Richard and Lori?

(Permission to godmod Cordelia and Kenrich granted.)

The evening was over. Drestakil sighed and slowly strode up the stairs to the Master Suite. Downstairs he could hear the servants clearing the Main Hall, or Living Room as he chose to think of it. The guests had left.

Cordelia and Kenrich had been the first to leave. They wanted to journey on before it got too late. Lori, Cordelia's handmaiden, had left with them, to the rather obvious consternation of Richard. Drest felt sorry for him. The man carried his heart on his sleeve.

Gina and Kenna had left a little later. His two favorite nieces. He was always glad to see them, but always glad to see them leave. Was this being mean spirited? He supposed so and, of course, he would never tell them that. He felt a twinge of guilt. Drest sighed again. Family came first, always. Sometimes, though, a person just wanted to be by themselves. Still, he had to admit to himself that having the family around always made him feel better. After all those years of not having his family close, it was nice to have most of them just down the road, so to speak.

Tomorrow he would go to Lichfield and see Sara Jane. It was time to have a serious talk with her.

Drestakil could tell Sara Jane loved the necklace. If it didn't show in her face, the kiss afterwards told all. He thought she would like it. It set the stage for the next gift...a ring.

Drest looked around the library, which had been his brother's. He hadn't made many changes. Right now a young man was on the way to Marseille, on the coast of France and from there to the northern coast of Africa. In his travels through the Holy Land Drest had talked to a wise man in Dimashq. That man had a fragment of a scroll he said had come from a place called Timbouctou. The young man and four retainers were going to find the place and, hopefully, bring back more of the same.

In the mean time, Drest was gradually getting the household set up the way he wanted. The only spot left open was in the kitchen. He hadn't picked out a cook. He assumed, if and when he asked Sara Jane to marry him and she accepted, that she would move to Mortimer Castle and bring her own kitchen servants.

As he walked through the halls he nodded to various servants engaged in their daily chores. Most of them had names now. Drest was notoriously bad with names. He just could NOT remember them. Some people took that for a slight. It wasn't, but people were like that.

Hammering sounds were already coming from the blacksmith's shop. He nodded through the wide open window at the smith. The young man smiled and nodded. That would be Judd, the young man he had recruited in Lichfield. The former castle smith had decided to move into town and open a shop of his own. When Drest had protested that there was certainly enough work around the castle and from the tenants to keep two smiths busy, the man smiled and said, "Milord, I know that, but this is something the missus and I have been wantin' to do for a long time. Rest assured if you need something done, have someone send it to town and it'll get done."

Thinking back over the last few weeks...months?...Drest was surprised at how the time had flown by. The Holy Days were past. Gina had set up a house in London. Should he set up a house there? Don't be silly, he could stay at Gina's when he was in London.

No, it was time to seriously plan when and how he was going to propose to Sara Jane. Not that it would come as a surprise to anyone in the family, still, formalities had to be observed. No matter what might be understood, there must be a formal proposal from the prospective groom to the prospective bride. Then there must be a formal announcement, then a formal wedding ceremony. He'd already thought this once and it was still true: When the two families involved were as prominent as the Mortimers and the de Phoenixes, you couldn't get by with eloping.

As Drest walked back onto the castle grounds, he cocked his head to one side...or could you?
