= (IRP) The Sword and the Shield

--Constable_caine
With a smirk Caine got up from behing his desk. Oh right... the Pear. d'Argent would certainly appreciate the Pear, so it was time to use it this time.

"Let's go then!" he said triumphantly, proud to be able to show the foreign Viscount how satisfyingly miserable his jail was for it's numerous visitors.

Caine didn't stop his ostentation before the adjutant had opened the cell door. Once Caine saw what was inside his mouth dropped and for a secod or two he just stared. Then he snapped out of it and like a well-trained Constable shouted out:

"ALAAARRRMMM!!!

Do you want to be dead?
Pagan
Pagan grabbed Jerro as he was about to drop and practically plucked him up to the top of the wall. As they were standing on the wall they could see lights turning on in the Bailiwick windows. Boots were rustling. They could hear sharp commands.

The escape had been spotted!

Pagan turned and looked down on the other side of the wall. There was probably a about fifty yard wide open area filled with horse tracks. It was a training field for the NMA. A gate opened approximately twenty yards away. A group of guards ran out holding lanterns.

"Stay down!" Pagan whispered at Jerro and Dierdre. "Down there we wouldn't stand a chance!"

Pagan shivered but stayed lying down on the top of the wall. Would the guards check the foot-wide wall? It was over ten-feet tall, but still...

"Goodness," d'Argent said, "That looks a bit of a muddle. Weren't these your shock troops down here? One of them has a dagger plunged into his ear.....funny crest on it too...."

D'Argent smiled to himself...

--Constable_caine
Feeling extremely peeved, Caine bent down to pluck the knife out of the man's ear. By Jah, if the prisoners wouldn't have killed them, he would have done it himself!

"Oh yes", he said, "just as I suspected. It's Pagan's sign. I've always said that tramp was nothing but a criminal hiding behind a respectable name. MacKenzie - PTHUI! I happen to know she has no relation to that family of Scottish immigrants whatsoever. No, she was born and bread here, and no matter how hard she tries to pretend like they never existed, I still remember who her real family was. The scummiest, purest example of human trash that's ever tread the face of this Earth. And Pagan is no different, it is in her blood. I don't know how she managed to squirm in the good graces of the MacKenzie's, but now everyone shall see what I meant!"

Caine turned and looked apologetically at d'Argent. "I'm sorry about this display of incompetence, sire, but they couldn't have gotten far. Rest assured we will catch them - and the other conspirators from England as well. I think I remember that Destini now - there's another social climber. Granted, her parents were honest, but they were also poor dirt farmers. Nobodies. I guess the undeserved respect those two enjoyed by replacing their real names with the title of MacKenzie just wasn't good enough for them anymore, eh? Nothing is ever enough for that type of people."

Do you want to be dead?
--Viscomte_dargent

Inwardly the Viscomte was roaring with mirth and glee, but outwardly was a picture of calm elegance--as always. His silken voice shadowed forth, "Yes. Social climbers and murderers all. Same with Brightpoint. A small bit of talent puffed up with an ego the size of Flanders

I expect Brightpoint and Destini MacBrat helped slay your guards. I worried we might have to suffer some ill-conceived, murderous rescue effort. I will send over three of my best men to swell your ranks after this sudden loss of troops. They are well-trained, effectively brutal, and utterly reliable"

D'Argent paced, "I think, Constable, that when next that lot is captured--and I have faith you will get them--you may wish to be a bit more stern. Some scum are best left to meet their end 'resisting arrest,' don't you think?

Besides Ireland is a hungry land and this will be four fewer mouths to feed..."

--Deacon_allan_brightpoint

Allan looked over Destini's shoulder at the notice tacked up.

"What, no pictures?" complained the Arch-deacon. "Pretty shoddy business not having descriptions and pictures on the notices."

Brightpoint's eye spotted another parchment flopping in the breeze nearby. He walked over to have a look.

"Uh oh...One here for your friend Pagan MacKenzie and some other gent.

The constable in these parts has been busy. We'll need to stay out of anywhere you'll be easily recognized.

I wonder if the two hundred people at that wedding last winter will recognize me..."

There was never a dull moment in the service of Cardinal Faheud

--Constable_caine
"Absolutely, sire", Caine nodded in perfect agreement. "Even though it would have been... a pleasure... to extract a confession from Pagan and her little boyfriend, she is unfortunately much smarter and more efficient than the rest of her late trashy family, and this incident here proves it. She is too dangerous to be kept alive. I assume your... security consultants... don't have qualms about that sort of thing? 'Encounters', that's how I call them. I'm only asking because some of my own underlings have certain amount of qualms over such methods because of misplaced pity for the wrong-doers. There is a select few people I can assign for encounter jobs."

Do you want to be dead?
Destini
"Stay out o' anywhere I'll be easily recognized?!" Destini quoted back to Allan with a voice rising on its way to hysterics. "Allan! This is my home! I was born here in Imleach! I've been tryin' to get home fer months! O' course I'll be recognized!"

Fearful hysterics gave way to determined anger and she ripped the wanted posters from the barn wall. "I willnae stand by whilst my kin are poisoned, tortured, an' murdered." The contents of Pagan's many letters went through her mind as she recalled all that her clan sister had written about.

She looked down at the poster with Pagan's name on it and recognized Jerro's name from one of Pagan's letters. So, he'd stuck beside her even through Pagan's poisoning. Good. Destini looked forward to meeting this man ... assuming he and Pagan were still free and alive.

If they were, where would they be?

She thrust the wanted posters at Allan and headed for the road into town. "Stay here if ye'd rather hide than help ... though where I'm goin, I'll most certainly be recognized an' need all the help I can get." In an instant, her pistol crossbow was in her hand. She checked her remaining ammunition in preparation for what would certainly be a fight. Her Irish temper flared at the indignity of being suspected of committing the very crime she had tried so hard to prevent. "I'm goin' to the MacKenzie Circus. E'en if Pagan isnae there, her bartender Grunt may know where she is."

Allan let a rare tone of annoyance filter his words, "Well, by all means, blunder down the road in a huff.

Or.

Perhaps pick something in between the obviously stupid idea of hiding and the equally daft idea of trundling up the road looking for an arresting officer.

I think either extreme is doomed to similar bad ends.

Obviously this is d'Argent's work--trying to take those capable of stopping him out of the game--"

Allan realized that she was not listening, hadn't been, and was a dozen yards up the road.

"Right then. Come, lads, we're off to be arrested."

With that he readied weapons and followed.

"Of course, d'Argent smoothly replied. "I will be sending you a trio of associates who have exactly that sort of talent and experience. I will go arrange for them to report in."

D'Argent headed back up and out of the bailiwick to select a few operatives to load to the Bailiwick. Operatives more loyal to d'Argent than the county, to be fair, but the Viscomte was all right with that as well..

Destini
For all her anxious anger, for all her desire to help her kin now that she was close enough to do something, she was still listening to Allan.

She stopped walking, hooked her hand crossbow back to its tether at her belt, and turned back to Allan. "I'm doin' it again, aren't I? I'm doin' the same thing that got ye hurt on the ship." She felt her cheeks once flushed with anger, now flush with embarrassment. "Ye're right o' course. 'Tis daft to march into the waitin' arms o' d'Argent an' whoe'er in the law he's corrupted to his side. Yet, where my kin are involved, I amnae clear thinkin'. I know that."

She hesitantly met his gaze. "I s'pose d'Argent was countin' on that." She cleared her throat of the tears that were gathering there, tears she didn't dare shed for fear of losing all control. "So, we cannae stay here an' we cannae launch an attack on Imleach alone. What do we do?"

"We do have options. We can move into town, but slightly off the roads--shut it Richard--and not be obvious. By the time we get there it would be dusk and we can check out the MacKenzie Circus like you said.

Let's not stop moving, let's just be careful. The closer we get to saving Pagan, the closer we get to those trying to harm her."

Allan smiled to soften his earlier words a bit and pointed out what appeared to be a hunting trail running parallel to the main thoroughfare.

"That looks like it might suit us..."

--Richard.grimthorn
Grimthorn had, indeed, opened his mouth to complain at the suggestion (or was it an order?) to go through the brush rather than the road ... again. He found he actually agreed more with the lady MacKenzie than with Brightpoint. Why not go barrelling in with crossbows and throwing daggers doing what they were designed to do? There were four of them, after all. A sudden attack might undo d'Argent before he had a chance to react. This sneaking, however, gave the viscomte time to plan and plot again. Grimthorn liked chess. He was good at it. But even he had to admit that d'Argent was better at the game.

Since Brightpoint's comment had stifled his complaint, he ended up silently miffed as the party began to move through the underbrush along a so-called path. He rolled his eyes and grudgingly followed. He chanced a glance or three to watch the lady MacKenzie with a degree of interest. Interesting behavior from her over the last several hours. Very interesting indeed. After a moment or two, he paused his stride to reach out to carefully touch Brightpoint's forearm to get his attention. "Brightpoint, if you don't mind falling back a bit, I'd like a word, if you please." His suddenly genteel and subtle manner hinted that what he had to say was worth listening to.

--Deacon_allan_brightpoint

Brightpoint was pleased that Richard had stifled whatever complaint had been brewing about that clever mind of his. Miraculously, Allan had managed to stifle mirth at the war occurring in Richard's expressive face...

"Indeed...certainly.....Corwynn...please take second position."

Allan fell back to hear what Richard had to say...

--Richard.grimthorn
Grimthorn waited until they had fallen back a bit from the lady MacKenzie before speaking again. He kept his voice low so only Brightpoint would hear him. No sense in getting the others in an uproar. "I worry for the lady MacKenzie. No, no, don't bother making useless accusations that I care for her when you clearly have that fox well chased." He paused, upset that he had even spoken those words, but if that was what it took to stifle what he guessed would be Brightpoint's predictable response, then there it was. "Still, I am concerned. Her kin have been murdered and tortured, yes. It's tragic. Her worry is extremely understandable. Honestly, who can blame her?

"... Still ...

"Six hours ago I watched her torture a soldier with as much gusto as I would expect from you or I ... do recall that I saw your handiwork on Elias, mm? Just now, she was Hell bent on causing d'Argent, the constable, and any in her way as much trouble as she possibly could ... even at the expense of her own life. Oh, you might have been able to pull her back from the brink this time. But what of next time? If I'm to follow someone or trust they have my back, I want to know they're up to the task."

Grimthorn got to the point. "So, what say you, Brighpoint? Do you honestly believe - given what the lady is going through - that she is up to this?"
