= (IRP) The Sword and the Shield

Jerro_oconnor
Jerro couldn't help but shudder. "Well, what seemingly delightful news ye got. And I've got the earthly earthware woman. Is it too late to change my mind and go to England with ye?" He pushed his plate into the middle of the table. Suddenly, he didn't feel all that hungry any more. "Allen gets to help set up a feast, Corwynn gets to watch a medical specialist, Destini gets to play strategy games with a king, and I get a very scary proposition." He shuddered again, turning to look at the destructive wake Miss Molly had left.

"That's probably a code for somethin, which seems about right since we just finished talkin about that. But it's probably somethin similar to the message anyway. No chance my code is any more subtle than I'm gettin out of it." He leaned his head back against the chair and closed his eyes. Maybe if he sat like this, the problem would go away on its own?

Corwynn yawned and stretched. "I don't know about you lot, but this has been a frenetic few days. I am minded to get some sleep before we take the final leg off to our ship."Hepoked through the room keys on the table near Allan and selected one labled "1" as it was as far as he could be from "17"

"Night all!" waved Corwynn as he headed up the stairs.

--Richard.grimthorn
Richard, glad for the segue from conversation to sleep, readily drained his glass and picked up key number 2 from the table. He glanced to Jerro and had a momentary pang of pity for him. "Four rooms, chap," he said to Jerro and held up the room key. "What say you to sleeping in a room where I'll guard the door from lady Molly?" Of course, by 'guard the door' he meant he'd sleep on his bedroll in front of the door. Given that woman's girth, he was fairly certain that he'd be able to hear if she tried to enter. Plus, he had no desire to share a room with Corwynn, if he could help it.

Jerro_oconnor
He had to admit, Richard's proposition sounded good. "Alright, since I can't get the army to rescue me quite yet, I guess I'll settle for the next best thing." He got up, pushed his chair in and followed Richard into room 2, looking out in case Miss Molly decided to ambush him in the halls. He wasn't sure how much more "affection" he could take! "G'night everyone!" He called over his shoulder to the others.

Destini
A pensive expression was on Destini's face as she watched Corwynn, Richard, and Jerro wander off to their rooms. "He's a quandary. Richard, I mean. One moment he's murderin' an killin' those on the side o' right, an' the next he's puttin' himself in harm's way to protect a member o' that same side. I cannae fathom him."

Even as she said the words, she knew she could fathom him. In one way or another, they were all like Richard. They had all killed and threatened others. Self-defense could only excuse so much. "O' course, then I wonder if there really is a side o' right an' wrong. Or if it's all just points o' view. Imperfect creatures cannae be wholly good or wholly evil, I s'pose."

She shook her head and pinched the bridge of her nose with the thumb and index finger if her left hand. A deep sigh escaped her lips. "Ne'er mind me. Morbid thoughts are a result o' this terrible day. I'm tired an' the road from here is long. I'm fer bed, too, I think. Allan?" She reached out to take Allan's hand in hers.

Looking to Pagan, something about the way the candle light shone on her face made Destini ask, "How 'bout ye, lass? Will ye be alright in yer room?"

Pagan
Pagan looked at Desti and gave her a smile that was at the same time brave, weary, incoherent and somewhat sad. "Aye", she said with a thick voice. "I guess I can get some sleep now." She raised her empty glass. "I've had my medicine."

Pagan pushed herself up on her wobbly feet and focused her eyes on the staircase. It looked like an insurmountable mountain, but she knew that if she didn't make it up to her own room soon, she wouldn't make it at all - not with her own legs. She was over her limit.

Allan stood up. "I think rest is a perfect idea. The morrow sends us a very long day indeed."

Brightpoint offered Destini an arm and held up the room keys numbered 4.

"These would be ours...Shall we?"

Destini
Taking Allan's proffered arm, she allowed him to lead her to their room. Destini kept a watchful eye on Pagan as long as she could to ensure the lass made it to her room alright. Eventually, as they parted for their own room in number 4, Destini had to break line of sight and retire for the evening.

She stripped to her under-tunic, finally uncovering the angry red-brown stripes on her wrists and ankles where her bonds had been. She held one wrist with the other hand and stared at the injuries silently. Now that the short-sleeves of her under-tunic left her arms bare, other injuries were revealed in the soft candle-light. A myriad of tiny pin-pricks showed at the crooks of both her arms, locations where d'Argent had administered poisons to keep her docile and compliant.

"What day is it, Allan?" she asked him without turning to face him. So long as she kept her back to him, he couldn't see the worst of the injuries. Embarrassed, fearful of what his reaction might be or what he might think, she didn't want Allan to see her like this, wanted him to blow out the candle and plunge the room into darkness that would hide what had been done to her.

Her question, however, prolonged the light and made it more likely he would notice. It was too late to take back the remarks, now. "I've lost track o' the days, somehow."

Allan looked at Destini and felt compassion for ehr as she admitted she was not sure how long she had been held captive.

"It was only two days from the trouble in the MacKenzie Circus Tavern in Imleach til this moment. The flight and chase was fast a furious. I am very proud of how you fought like a lioness in trying to escape d'Argent's clutches along the way."

He blew out the candle and wen to take ehr by the shoulders gently.

"Come... right now you need comforting and sleep...."

He led her to the bed and hoped her sleep would be dreamless...

Destini
Nearly two days? In all that time, she remembered only a few hours worth of jumbled memories, hazy, unreal scenes that seemed more like a nightmare than something that had actually occurred to her. The marks on her flesh said otherwise, though.

The candlelight vanished. Had he understood why she'd not turned around? Allan's touch was gentle on her bare shoulders. His fingers on her skin told her his pride was more than words to make her feel better. She allowed him to lead her to the bed where she rested her head beside his on the pillow, mindful of Allan's own injuries.

To sleep restfully, to allow her body to recuperate without poisons forcing oblivion upon her, was a great relief. Exhaustion took her quickly and she was asleep in moments. There were dreams, but they were distant and hazy. One piece was more clear than the rest of the content, but it was out of place, meaning nothing to her. Whatever the dreams, they were unwilling to come to the surface just yet. For that, she was exceedingly grateful.

Corwynn yafidgeted in the saddle. It had been a fast ride to the port town where Allan's backup transportation awaited. he should be back out at any moment to tell them if the ship was really there and passage secured. He looked at the others, also showing signs of impatience and failed to stifle a glib comment.

"At least it is a short wait. I'd hate to think we'd sit here outside the gates for two hours while Allan blunders around. "

Corwynn grimaced at himself for he had just sounded like Richard.

"Sorry, I need to be more patient. I guess I am still feeling like some army of constables will show up wanting a word....It is the status quo this trip.

His words trailed off at the end as he saw a familiar blonde head riding out of the gates toward them.

Allan brightpoint was well pleased.

He rode through the gates out of Corcaigh and rejoined his comrades with a broad grin.

Pulling the horse to a stop with the reins, he said, "The Sea Calls, the winds whisper and...We have berths on a ship leaving in three hours.

Colonel Pagan. Cpt. Jerro. It has been an honor to serve with you and I'd have you at my flank in any battle that came..."

Allan fell silent then as he knew there were goodbyes to be said between Destin and Pagan that were neither short nor easy. They seemed like sisters to be honest, and he nudged his mount over to Corwynn and Richard to coordinate while the ladies could speak in some privacy.

Destini
"Well then," said Destini turning to her best friend in all the world with the glimmer of tears in her eyes. "Here beside the shores o' the sea we make our farewells." A comforting hand found its way to Pagan's shoulder.

"But fare-thee-wells arenae goodbyes. We shall see each other again, an' we shall be keepin' in constant contact in the meantime. Ye both know the codes we'll use, aye?" she addressed both Pagan and Jerro. While on the road, Destini had explained a simple code she had read about during her studies in Hastings. Every third letter of the body of the missive would together form a different message entirely. It was simple, but, unless someone were looking for it, nearly invisible. Other, more complicated, codes could be used later, if necessary.

"We'll send ye plants an' instructions fer the creation o' the Oriental antidote, too. I'll speak with Reverend Mother Mary myself as soon as I see her," she promised.

Desti hugged Pagan tightly and held her a long moment before finally releasing her. "I will pray fer both yer safety every day I'm away."

"And I you! All of ye." Jerro responded to Allen. He noticed Allen repositioning himself towards Corwynn and Richard. Then he realized that Allen was giving Pagan and Destini space to talk, kin to kin. He also backed up a bit to give the girls some space to talk.

Pagan
Pagan embraced Destini tightly, feeling a hard lump on the back of her throat. When they released each other Pagan kept her hands on her friend's shoulders and looked her in the eyes for a long time, smiling softly.

"Well, here we are again. Just like at Oddman's and Airiana's wedding that day... has it really been half a year now? Almost that long I reckon. And now ye have to go again." Pagan sighed. "But as ye say, this is not a final farewell."

Pagan quieted down, unsure what more to say. She felt like she had to say something, but it was like all that was worth saying had been said already. And the ship was waiting.

"Good bye, dear friend. Some day we meet again. Take care of yerself."

Pagan released her hands from Destini's shoulders and nodded.
