= (IRP) The Sword and the Shield

Jerro_oconnor
The walls of Corcaigh were within sight. Pagan had stirred once during the ride, which worried Jerro. She was still breathing, but he didn't know how long it would last. He cared for her to the best of his ability, which basically boiled down to changing the rag when it got too warm and making sure she was still breathing. He was amazed, had it only been a few days since he had been here for the fair?

He urged the drover to speed up again, and looked around. The ride to Cork had been surprisingly uneventful, they had not needed to stop and were not attacked, both of these being minor blessings in themselves even if the circumstances weren't pressing. He felt himself fidgeting as they neared the gates, he hoped they weren't too late.

Captain Dirk Regan was just on his tour to inspect the guards at the gate as he saw a cart approaching like the Nameless One himself was chasing after it. What's this then? Dirk though curiously and decided that it was worth it to stick around to see what the commotion was about.

"All right", he said to the guard self-consciously, "I'll handle this one."

Dirk took a stance in front of the gate and waited as the cart approached. There appeared to be two men sitting on the drover's seat, and one of them hcarried a NMA uniform. That didn't necessarily mean they were legit though, Dirk knew and pulled a stern look on his face as the cart pulled by him.

"Hold it, hold it", he said with his best authoritative voice (just a short while ago Dirk had only been a lieutenant and he was still enjoying his promotion and taking everything out of it). "What seems to be the rush, gentlemen?"
Jerro_oconnor
"Private Jerro O'Connor of the NMA reporting." He said in a harried voice, snapping off a smart salute. They might be in a hurry, but bypassing procedure could get them into deeper trouble. "Col. Pagan Mckenzie here has been poisoned, and I have reason to believe the antidote is at the palace. I also have information that the king or anyone close to the king must hear." Jerro began to fidget again, remembering the letter say that there was a point when the antidote would stop working.

Just then, one of the escorts spoke up, "Please hurry sir, can't ye see she's dying?"

"Colonel P...!"

Dirk took a one good look at the cargo and turned as white as a sheet. Just a few months ago Dirk had been in a deep trouble, for he was a gambling man and had been in a bad spot with his debtors, so bad he had been forced to take some money from a known criminal just to survive through it, and Pagan had somehow found out. But instead of turning him in, Pagan had discreetly destroyed the evidence, and instead of being dishonorably discharged from the NMA Lieutenant Dirk Regan was now Captain Dirk Regan, and he would have gladly died for Colonel Pagan.

"The King is dead, don't ye know?" he blurted out and continued, "please follow me to the Palace!" Dirk took the reigns and literally ran in front of the horse to the Corcaigh Palace. Rapidly he cleared through all the formalities, and soon all the Palace knew - Pagan had been poisoned! She was in a cart in the Palace yard, and she was dying!
Jerro_oconnor
Jerro sat there in shocked silence as he was herded towards the palace. The king was dead? He never knew him personally, but it was still a shock to hear that. That meant that they were too late. Another person that Jerro couldn't save. The ride to the palace passed by as a blur, he vaguely remembered Dirk shouting out to get everyone out of the way. Jerro stared blankly ahead the whole way there.

Once at the palace, though, he felt a hand on his shoulder. When he turned to look, nobody was there. He knew who it was, though. He realized that it would do nobody any good to sit here in a fog, so he pulled himself together. He gently picked up Pagan, and asked for directions to where he needed to go. Then, he ran to where they told him to go.

Oddman
The news traveled faster than Jerro, that he was on his way with Pagan. And that she had been poisoned. Oddman hurriedly grabbed one of the antidote vials and ran to meet them. Their paths met on the landing in the stairwell one floor down from the kings chambers.

"I have one of the antidote vials. hold her steady so I can give it to her."

He took out the vial of blue liquid from his pocket and unstopped it with his teeth. Then he carefully poured the contents down her throught so she would not choke on it.

Seeing that Jerro was exausted from the long trip and carrying Pagan up the stairs Oddman took her from him and carried her the rest of the way to the bedroom a guardsman directed them to and laid her gently on the bed.

He then turned to Jerro and said.

"Thank you very much for all you've done for my sister inlaw. I owe you a great deal for your efforts too save her. Now we wait and see if she received the antidote in time."
Jerro_oconnor
"No, ye owe me nothin." Jerro said. "How could I sit there when someone needed me? I'm sure ye would've done the same for me an mine." Jerro reached to grab the letter when he realized that, in his haste, he had left it on the table at the Mackenzie Circus. "But while we wait, I have some information that ye need to know." All he really wanted was to take a quick rest, but he couldn't do that in good conscience when there were things that still needed to be done.

Pagan
Pagan's big eyes opened and stared straight at Oddman. For a moment she couldn't recall who he was, then she remembered and recognizion changed the expression on her face.

"Oddman..."

Pagan's hand - the blue stints under her fingernails starting to fade away as the antidote worked it's magic - grabbed his arm.

"Oddman, Zan! Has Zan taken his medicine? If he hasn't we must force it down his throat, it might already be too late! Don't let the poisoners win!"

Oddman
Oddman was greatly relieved when Pagan opened her eyes and recognized him. But the expression on his changed quickly reflecting the grief he was still feeling from Zanditin's so recent death.

"Zan is dead! He refused to take the antidote and earlier he had made Alys promise not to let anyone force a treatment on him against his will. It was his choice. For my own part, my vows and commitments would not let me go against that."

He hugged Pagan and and held her for a while then said.

" The Cowards that Poisoned you and and took Zan from us will be hunted down, and they will feel the full wrath of Jah."
Jerro_oconnor
Jerro stood around awkwardly during the exchange. Finally, though, he spoke up. "Speaking of cowards, I believe I found one of their names. I'm not sure if he is actually part of this or not, but does the name Viscomte d'Argente mean anything to either of you?"

Pagan
When she heard the news about Zan's passing away Pagan released herself from Oddman's embrace and stood up from the bed, but her feet were still weak and usteady so she slumped sitting into a sofa. She felt uncontrollable craving for whiskey. The news had shocked her deeply.

"Zan... dead?" She had a hard time understanding the meaning of those words. Zan, the man who had imported the axe program in Ireland, the man who had fought side by side in the war and, most importantly, the man who had had the habbit of pulling his kilt on the flagpole of Imleach on numerous occasions, the man who had joked and laughed and drank with her all those times in the taverns... dead.

Then Jerro spoke and Pagan forced herself to concentrate on his words. "No, never heard of him. Who is he?"

"I don't know, it was the name that was dropped at the place ye had me visit." Then Jerro remembered Síle, he would have to write to her to get her here. "She said he was a murderer, and that he might have something to do with all this." He looked over at Pagan and Oddman, then looked down at his feet sheepishly. "I wish I could have found out more."

Pagan
"It's all right, Jerro, ye did good", Pagan said. "We have a name now, and that is a lead."

Pagan had hard time keeping her eyes open. She desperately needed a drink, she was starving and she was dead tired, and she knew she wouldn't be strong enough to make it back to Imleach in a couple of days. At the moment she was too weak to even stand on her two feet. Besides, there would be a funeral for Zan, and she would have to attend to that.

"Anything else?"

Jerro shook his head, "No, nothing else that wasn't in the letter ye got. I would like to know what's going on here." He looked over at Pagan and Oddman again, noticing how tired they both looked. "But I suppose that that can wait until later. What do we do now?"

Pagan
Pagan yawned. "Well I don't know about ye guys, but I'm just about to fall asleep here. And I'm pretty sure I'm not fit to travel fer a couple of days, and then there will of course be the funeral of the King. Do ye want to go back to Imleach without me, Jerro? Because ye can if ye like. I think I will be safe here, or as safe as I can be anywhere at the moment."
