= [ORP] The Launce: Launceston Castle

Lady_roberta
I woke from a beautiful night's slumber and wondered, was it all a dream? I rose from bed and glanced at my dressing table. Sitting on the table was the beautiful pendant Chris had given me. This ... is not a dream. It is real, and I am engaged to Chris. I fall back on to the bed with abandon. The Party the thought flew through my head. I sat up and started my toilet to get ready for the day.

I brought with me a charcoal stick and some scrap parchment, to make notes on for the party. The list grew longer over breakfast. After eating, I headed to my little office and was able to find some beautiful matching stationary for my invitations. I hand wrote each one, hoping I wasn't missing anyone Chris wanted me to invite. This was just for family and intimate friends.

I rang for Geoff. Geoff, I need you to deliver these invitations for me. I hope that Treena as made it home from her travels so that she can attend. if not leave it with the steward of her house, Geoff.

With the invitations finished, I went to the cook to begin discussing the dinner menu for the party.

A note arrives at Launceston Castle from Jack:

Dearest cousin,

Thank you for your invitation to your engagement party dinner. I would be delighted to attend. I am very excited for you. Currently, I have a guest staying over at the manor. Would it be an inconvenience to you if I were to bring her with me to your dinner party?

Jack

I was in the Smithy, sharpening an axe, when Geoff came in with a letter.

Met the messenger at the gate as I was comin' back from the DePeche manor. Said 'e was from Bodmin.

I perk up. Jack has replied already! Wonderful. I read over the note. Hmm. A guest? a female? Geoff did you hear anything while you were there?

No, Ma'am. They was the first I delivered, so I was off real quick. Geoff shook his head.

I walked over to the little office in the smithy and wrote Jack a quick note.

Dearest Cousin,

I am so glad that you can attend my little party. I would love to meet your guest. Please bring her along. Will she be staying with you long? I am curious.

Boo.

Geoff, dear. I know you just got back, but could you run this over to Bodmin? You are such a peach. I smile at Geoff as he nods his assent.

Treena
"I'm telling you, it is this way," Treena insisted. They had been traveling for some time now without any sign of life save a few hares scared out of Interlude's path. Dartmoor?!" she suddenly exclaimed as a very worn and just barely legible sign came into view behind an overgrown tree at a familiar crossroads. "We've made a grand circle, thanks to your keen sense of direction."

The lady jumped down off the wagon and beat the dust out of her skirt. She raised her hand over her eyes and peered down the dirt paths, hardly could you call them roads in this part of the county. "I'm nearly certain this one leads to Tavistock and that one is the loop we just followed back here..." she thought aloud. "This one seems to go northeast at least at the onset and that one west towards Launceston, but for all we know, there's a sharp turn we can't see..."

Interlude snorted and scratched at the ground. He easily grew impatient at stops, especially when there was no grass in easy reach. Remind me again why we didn't take the road through Plymouth," she smiled, her annoyance finally giving in to the comic situation. "What do you say? Flip a coin?"

Riding South from Barnstaple, Richileau eventually reached the town of Launceston. "No need to ask where to find the castle," he thought, eyeing the large structure on the hill right in the town centre. He found himself an inn to clean himself up and lodge for the night, before heading to the Parish church to listen to the afternoon mass. Paying his respects to the preist and the community, he then hesistantly approached the castle.

When the first guard appeared, he timidly produced his beautifully embossed invitation, and waited for his arrival to be announced.

I had been conferring with Janet, the cook, all day about the menu and preparations. We had arranged for a few extra servants to help with the party.

Mary, the maid, had set the formal dining room and table. The bar was set up, with Geoff as the tender (he had tended the Hungry Hooter in Launceston many a time).

Once all the preparations were done, I went upstairs to dress.

As I was fixing my hair, Mary knocked on my door to tell me that a guest had arrived already, that the guard had brought them to the door. Oh, early. And Chris isn't hear yet. Set them up in the Parlor, Mary and have Geoff get them something to drink. See if Janet has some canapés ready and get them served, please. I will be down momentarily.

Mary came downstairs with her instructions. Father Richileau, please follow me. M'Lady will be down soon. She took him to the parlor, where Geoff had the bar set up. Leaving him in the capable care of Geoff, Mary went to the kitchen to check with the cook.

Greetings Father Richileau. Would you like something to drink? We have wine, ale, and some imported Irish whiskey.Geoff asked him.

I came down stairs just as Geoff was asking about drinks. Richileau, I am so glad you could come. Was the trip long for you? Being between Launceston and Barnstaple, I sometimes think that people might get lost. I giggle a little.

"Cider is my drink of choice, but if you have none then a goblet of wine would be well received. Thank you, Geoff. I hope you will enjoy the evening as much as the guests."

"Thank you very much for inviting me, Lady Roberta. You look magnicient, and positively radiant with happiness. Chrisius is a lucky man. The trip was pleasant, Jah holds the autumn winds at bay and the weather was most obliging. You no doubt know the route well by now, but I enjoyed some magnificent views on the ride over."

We had left a little late, but luckily the roads between the two towns of Barnstaple and Launceston were well maintained, the folks of both towns took great pride in their trade links and made sure repiars were always carried out each spring.

Even so it made for a somewhat bumpy journey, a few times Lily had been flung across from her Mothers side onto my lap, though giggling loudly about it all !

About two hours id reckoned would see us there and it was beginning to feel like wed been in the carriage for four ! thump thump thump ! I bashed the roof of the carriage, Bob are we nearly there yet ! I hollered to the lad through the side window !

the castle is just ahead on the horizon Sir, wont be long now ! Bob answered.

Bumping about was not good for my back, but i heard Bob say that the castle was up ahead.

Lily was having fun tho, i could see Chris didnt like riding in the carriage.

I hope we are not the last to arrive bro, it wouldnt look good for the Earl of Bedford to be late for his own engagement party.

Just as i said that, Bob said we are just going through the gates of the castle now sir.

Smiling at my Sisters comment and the ever cheerful face of Lily, I opened the door and got out to speak with the Gate man, stretching with relief at being out of the confines of the carriage, Could you inform the Lady of the house we have arrived my good man !, the Lord Bedford and Lady Lidford, Chrisius and Misty with young Lily.

Helping the girls out of the coach, Bob take it away round to the stable yard will you, and make sure our bags get brought up ! I flipped the lad a coin and an appreciative smile, Come on then you two lets go find the Hostess !

Darrian looked at Treena with an annoyed, sceptical look. "Oh, my keen sense of direction?" He retorted, "you mean the very same one that saved us from getting lost in and outside Exeter so many times?"
With a grunt, to make sure she understands she's on thin ice, he got off the wagon too and turned to Interlude to calm the horse down. In the meantime he listens to her thinking aloud with a chuckle.

When she mentioned Plymouth, Darrian turned around, ready to give her a lecture on how she herself had said they have no time for Plymouth and had to take a short cut. But when he saw she was smiling, he couldn't help but smile too and slap her shoulder teasingly. "Could it possibly be that it was because her specialness demanded it?" He teased some more. He then added as he pointed to the road seemingly leading straight to Launceston "You can leave the coin in your purse, we're going that way...No buts missy." Next he held the same finger pointing upwards like someone giving a lecture and added "Important rule, always go in the direction of where you have to go to when you get lost."

So to Interlude's apparent approval, Darrian helped Treena up on the carriage again (with a hidden smile because he got to lecture her so much) and set of in the direction he decided on. After a little moment he turned around to look at her with a grin and said "oh, before I forget to mention it. When we get there now, I'm going to tease you so much with this, it's my gift for helping us out once more."

Chris was most insistent that you be invited, Richileau, and I was more than pleased to extend the invitation. The pleasure is mine that you accepted. I blushed a bit at his compliment. Thank you, but I feel that the luck is all mine to have Chris in my life. I am glad you had a good trip.

Ian, dressed in his best livery, came to me to whisper in my ear. M'Lady, M'Lord Bedford an' 'is sister are here. I nodded at him. Richileau, if you will please excuse me, I have other guests to greet. Please make yourself at home. I nodded to him and went to the door.

I opened the door just as Chris was about to knock on it. Chris, your here. I smiled at him. I hope the trip was easy. I saw Misty right beside him. Misty, sister-to-be! I am glad you are here. Who do we have here? Hello Lily. Welcome to my home. I said when I saw Misty's daughter. Please come in all of you. Richileau is already here. I felt silly to be so nervous with Chris and Misty, but I was. It was the first time I had hosted either of them here. I motioned Mary over. Lily, would you like a tour of the castle? Mary here knows a bit about it and can show you all the fun places.

Mary smiled at Lily, Would ye like ta see the castle, Miss Lily? Mary held her hand out to Lily as I took Chris's hand in my own.

Jack's horse clopped down the long road out of Exeter toward Launceston Castle. As he and Emmy passed down the road, they saw Treena and Darrien, atop their horses looking confused. He saluted them from a distance and as they approached he said,

"So, you both are headed to the engagement dinner, I take it?"
