= (CRP) A Changing of the Guard

--Deacon_allan_brightpoint

"Your Grace," began Allan, "I think we should not depart until Mother Mary Arrives with the new supply of antidotes tomorrow. We have no idea how many folk may have been poisoned in Eire."

Destini
Destini nodded her agreement to both men. "Aye, 'tis a fair point."

Curtseying to those gathered, she thought on the comfortable bed back in her apartment that she had not yet had a chance to sleep in since her return back to Hastings. She would not have a chance to sleep in her bed for many more months if things went according to plan. "I think I'd best find my two witnesses before the morrow, then." Softly smiling her thanks to Faheud, she turned to leave.

Faheud smiled at his newest attache.

"Oh, Best One....well done for already deciding to go take care of home and checking in here before departing..."

Faheud went back to his duty roster to see who could watch the manor while his top agents were abroad..

Destini
Destini smiled at his Grace Faheud and cast a final parting comment to Arch-canon Alberic as she left. "If ye'd send the pigeon to my apartment, I can provide parchment an' ink there." She thanked him and exited the room.

As she walked back to her apartment through the streets of Hastings, she wondered what had become of her kin during the time that she had been away. She had come to England to stop the threat from reaching her kin. How had she failed? Had the threat been there all along? If so, how had she missed it?

And what was happening now? How long had the letter taken to reach her? Had Zan finally taken the antidote? Or was he dead already? Her stomach felt like it was tied into knots. She entered her apartment and went immediately for her pen and parchment.

~ Hastings, Sussex ~ 16 April 1459 ~

Pagan,

Your letter reached me today via courier. I am sending my reply via one of Count Faheud's carrier pigeons so we may converse whilst I am en route home to Ireland. 'Twill be faster than courier as His Grace's pigeons have been trained to fly quickly o'er the Irish Channel.

Please tell me His Majesty has taken the antidote. If he has not and is still alive, he must take the elixir Deacon Allan gave to Padraig immediately. There is a point when the antidote will no longer cure the poison. I only pray to Jah that it is not too late already.

I am coming home as fast as may be. Please send the carrier pigeon back with word of the current situation.

~ Desti

The carrier pigeon that arrived moments after she had finished writing turned out to be an old friend. Destini smiled when she saw the name on the anklet. "Hullo, Peck," she said with a smile. "Please get this to Pagan as fast as may be. Ye'll find her in one o' the taverns o' An Mumhain for certain." Destini rolled up the parchment and attached it to Peck's leg. As she released Peck into the night sky, she prayed he would return with good news ... but worried more that he would not.

Alberic walked down the row of flats until he saw the correct number. Pausing only briefly, as if reconsidering, he knocked upon the door to Destini MacKenzie's flat.

Destini
Destini looked up when she heard the knock at the door. After a night of rest, she was less on edge than she had been the night before. However, recent events still made her wary enough to ensure her hand crossbow was readily accessible on her belt as she descended the stairs to answer the door.

Opening it, she saw the kindly figure of Archcanon Alberic. A smile graced her features. She drew her hand away from the crossbow and opened the door wider to beckon him inside. "Archcanon! 'Tis a surprise to see ye. Come in! Can I offer ye anythin'? Tea, maybe?" Destini had taken a liking to some of the English pastimes, tea being one of them. She led the way up the spiral staircase to the second floor and reached for the kettle.

Glancing at the Archcanon, her performer's gift of reading an audience sent out a soft warning. He seemed ... not agitated, that was too strong a word for the normally completely collected archcanon. Perhaps hesitant or anxious were more apt terms? "Or maybe somethin' a bit stronger?" she offered instead.

Arch-canon Alberic smiled at the young attache and entered the simple but elegant townhouse.

"You have done well for yourself, dear, good.

A bit of tea or brandy or both would be delightful indeed..

There was a matter I wanted to inquire about without causing anyone untoward discomfort in a group setting."

Alberic looked over his spectacles.

"Is there any reason to be concerned that whatever....chemistry...is between you and young Brightpoint would impact either of you with regards to capacity to remain objective during a crisis?"

Destini
She froze.

For a brief moment, the hand holding the filled kettle hovered six inches over the hub of the iron stove. What rumors were flying about the halls of government? Yes, since her appointment to the position of Bard of Sussex, their social status was somewhat equalized, but Allan was also a co-worker. To have any personal involvement would be impossible ...especially in their line of work. Danger and death were all too frequent bedfellows to mix in a relationship. Yes, she'd kissed him, but - at the time - he'd just been saved from death. Surely that exempted her from any untoward comments. Did Faheud doubt her? Did he think her incapable of performing her assigned mission? Had he sent Alberic to fire her? No, that didn't seem to be the way His Grace did business. It was one of the reasons she agreed to be in his employ ... well, that and the fact that he and his attaches were privy to information that could save her kin.

Her thoughts turned suddenly to Zan, wondering if he were alive. She pushed it away to the back of her mind. No sense in worrying over what couldn't be helped ... yet.

Well, whatever the reason for the archcanon's question, she would prove herself. Calling upon every ounce of her not inconsiderable performance talent, she assumed an easy manner and laughed, placing the kettle on the hub at last. "Ye must be mistaken. I assure ye, archcanon, there is nothin' goin' on twixt Archdeacon Brightpoint an' myself." Here, she made absolutely certain to call Allan by his appropriate title. She went to the cupboard and pulled out a pair of meager tea cups and saucers. These she set on the table before turning back to the archcanon quickly as a thought occurred to her. "I'll bet Reverend Mother Mary set ye up to this. The kiss was nothin' but that o' gladness that he was alive. Ye'll remember he was minutes from death by the poison, I hope."

She went to the free-standing pantry and pulled forth a bottle of scotch. In England, Irish whiskey was harder to come by than scotch, but scotch had enough similarities to be pallatable. "'Fraid all I've got is scotch ... which isnae bad in tea, really," she offered, doubting the archcanon would go for it. She shrugged and placed it on the table anyway and went back to the pantry for her loose tea leaves. "If 'tis objectivity in the face o' danger that concerns ye, I'll invite ye to recall that the archdeacon an' I made it from Imleach, Eire to Hastings, England alive enough despite multiple such dangers. An' now, the main cause o' those dangers is dead," she pointed out, referring to Elias' murder the night before. It was a practical argument, sound in all ways save one: whom had murdered Elias?

Arch-canon Alberic smiled and put some effort into transforming amusement into concurrence.

"Aye, Scotch is lovely in tea...I am from Glasgow you know..

I am delighted to hear nothing stands in the way of clear minds on a hard road.

A Kiss you say? I am not surprised the Reverend Mother has not commented to me about that. She would likely not comment upon it to anyone. Brightpoint is a layperson and unlikely to take a Priests Oath. What was it that His Grace calls him....Unremitting.

My question is not one of having been told or having been sent. I have not gotten to this part of the road by being entirely unobservant, dear one, and I can see a chemistry there. If you say it is the connection of brilliant minds on a common task, that is excellent."

Alberic changed tone and topic to something of a lighter fare.

So where do you get your tea from? I find Madam Bowbrudges on Court Street to be quite excellent."

Destini
She was glad she was turned away from him with her head in the pantry when he mentioned that he had not known about the kiss. She pretended to have difficulty finding the canisters of tea that were not three inches from her forehead. She used the borrowed time to take several surreptitious breaths to calm the hot blush on her face. Damn! Of course His Grace had hired Alberic for his wit and intelligence. She didn't know any in Faheud's employ devoid of intuitive brilliance. Why hadn't she just kept her mouth shut?!

Sighing, she gave up the ploy, and turned to him with two tea canisters in her hands. The last of the blush faded softly from her ivory complexion. She leaned against the pantry, closing the door with her weight. "Don't tell Faheud ... or Allan, for that matter ..." she said in a low voice. She looked at the canisters of tea in her hands. "'Tis childish an' I know it. 'Tis why I tried to persuade His Grace to allow me to return to Eire alone. Allan saved my life. I saved his. I know danger creates a bond. But 'tisnae a reason to court."

She handed him the canisters of tea - the lables facing him - with a subtle smile. "Aye, Madam Bowbrudges has the best tea in all o' Hastings."

Alberic peered at the canisters.

"Let us see...'Mischief in the Wood' or Adventures Demise' not bad names for tea either. I will go the way of Adventures demise for now as sleep will tend to scamper away like a feckless colt if I am on the black teas after mid-day."

Alberic took up a strainer and measured out a portion of the pleasant smelling chamomile based variety.

"I have to agree it is not a reason to court or to go to court--any barrister would tell you it is entirely unrelated. Your point is well made on the success of your last endeavor regardless of what else may be going on.

My old Gran used to say 'Don't be fiddling with a fire already started or yer gonna choke to death in the fumes.' She was right, as always.

So, well enough alone then, shall we?

How is that water coming..."

Destini
Just as Alberic mentioned the water, the kettle began to boil. "Perceptive as always, Archcanon," she said, only vaguely referring to the kettle. Destini went for a hotpad and removed the kettle from the hub to a waiting trivet on the small, two-person dining table.

"So, ye're from Glasgow, ye say?" inquired Destini, pleased to be able to put the past conversation behind them and turn to other matters of less import. "Tell me o' Scotland."

Alberic smiled and took on a distant expression

"Ahh yes.... Beloved Scotland....a wonderful place to grow up in and depart from...."

--Deacon_allan_brightpoint

Allan Brightpoint was standing at the door of Faheud's office.

This never felt good

This never went as badly as he feared.

This always made him imagine the worst

Nothing for it but to knock

So knock he did.

Allan Brightpoint was standing at the door of Faheud's office.

Faheud

Faheud opened the door to find a sheepish expression on the face of Brightpoint. Well. That was not unfamiliar. Whenever the Archdeacon went a teensy bit overboard he always came in to report and receive a verbal thrashing.

Doubtless, today would not vary significantly, albeit the Count had done the summoning.

"Yes. Come in." Faheud closed the door as his attache entered.

"No need to sit. So tell me, why is Reverend Mother Mary in a tizzy. Did you kill Elias? And why am I to believe that you'll bring back alive andd intact all the attaches that depart on this mission?

No hurry. Take your time."

Faheud sat down and looked into Brightpoint's eyes."
