= (CRP) A Changing of the Guard

Castellan of Westgate, played by Destini
It was after noon but before the sun had crossed the yard arm.

Too early for drinking then.

Hm .... what else had the cardinal told him to do while he was gone?

He hadn't taken notes.

Wait.

Who was that walking through the cardinal's grounds?

"Oi! You there! Where do you think you're going with ..." He looked at the pigeon cage the man was carrying. "... that?"
Keyes
Keyes stopped and turned to the man who yelled at him
I have the Cardinal's new carrier pigeons. I was directed to put them somewhere. There wouldnt happen to be a pigeon coup somewhere, would there?
Castellan Of Westgate, played by Destini
"Oh."

Pigeons.

Pigeons belonged in a pigeon coup.

Right.

Perhaps it wasn't too early for a drink, after all.

Still, he would have to finish with this man first.

"My apologies, lord," he said with a subtle nod that hinted at a bow of courtesy. "Usually visitors are accompanied by a guard until they find me. Not your fault though, no. Probably bickering again, those two, mm? No, don't tell me, don't bother. I know they're uses and they are few. Just wait until I speak to the Cardinal about them."

He turned then and beckoned for the visitor to follow him. "The pigeon coups are this way. I suppose the guards didn't take your name as you entered? No, no, they wouldn't would they? Useless prats. I'll have to fill it in the guest log myself ... so ... your name would be ...?"

The Castellan continued to lead the way even as he waited for the visitor to respond.
Keyes
Keyes had to suppress his laughter. My name is Keyes. Thank you for your help.
Castellan of Westgate, played by Destini
"Keyes. Yes, well. It's simple, but it seems to suffice. This way."

He opened the door to the pigeon coup next to the stables. The door opened with the slightest hint of a squeak. The castellan had wondered why the cardinal had made him spend the last week cleaning out these old coups. Now, he understood.

"Well, here you are, then. I'll leave you to your ... " He looked down at the pigeons in the bird cage Keyes was carrying. " .. birds."

As he walked away, he called over his shoulder, "If you need me I'll be in the tavern near the south entrance. Right over there!" He gestured down a cobblestone path to show him the way then turned and walked down it.

Sunlight upon the rooftop of Westgate Manor drew Audrey's eye upward to the heavens. She had met the Cardinal Faheud in passing only. He seemed a dedicated, important man of Jah. Clearly, his faith had rewarded him in this life. Looking on the cardinal's home in awe, Audrey found herself uttering the words of Accursius of Bologna, a thirteenth century Roman lawyer, "Cuius est solum eius est usque ad coelum et ad inferos." The text had come to the hospital by mistake, hidden amongst a batch of medical manuscripts loaned to the hospital by a wealthy lord for translation and copying. The book on law had been intended for the university in Hastings. Before sending it onward, however, Audrey had secretly held it for several days in order to read its contents. She always read every book she could get her hands on. The book on law had been no exception.

Whose the land is, all the way to the sky and to the underworld is his. The words defined what a man of property owned. Seeing Westgate Manor for the first time, she suddenly understood its meaning. What a grand estate this was!

The guards, after a bit of confused chatter, pointed her in the direction of the stables and pigeon coup, saying the pigeon trainer had arrived hours ago.

She found him in the coup with his birds and greeted him with a wide-eyed, slightly nervous smile. "Greetings, Master Pigeoner. I am Sister Audrey sent hence from the Hospital of Saint Thomas by Reverend Mother Mary Persephone. She is sending me to Flanders tor training and tells me I am to take one of your pigeons with me." She glanced at the cooing birds, realizing she had no idea what to expect from them. What did they eat? How far could they fly? "I hope it won't be too much trouble for you to tell me how to handle one."

Keyes smiled Good day Sister. Keyes didn't really know how to continue.
If its a pigeon you need I would recommend Jones. He is a very tame pigeon, and would be good for a first time pigeon user. As for handling him, just attach the letter, tell him where to go, and give him a treat.
Keyes instantly regretted saying that. The pigeons all looked up, expecting a treat of sorts. Just make sure you don't say that word when they are near by.

The pigeon Jones' feathers were grey as the rain-soaked clouds. His head was a peculiar blend of purple and green. Sister Audrey took the bird from the master pigeoner carefully, worried she might crush it with even the little strength she had in her hands. Jones let out a soft coo and a grin flourished on Audrey's face. She liked Pigeon Jones already.

Her grin further exploded into laughter as she watched all pairs of beady, bird eyes, turn to the master pigeoner when he spoke the word 'treat'. She stopped her giggles with a genteel cough and took a moment to examine her surroundings with her keen eye.

A bag of corn sat along one side of the coup. The way the dust was settled beneath as well as around it, Audrey deduced that the bag had been recently brought hence, for the pigeons probably. So, the pigeons ate corn. That was good to know.

"Have you a carrier for the bird? I do not know what my accomodations will be like at the Hospital of Saint Amelie. I may have to keep Pigeon Jones in my cell whilst I am there."

Keyes
Keyes noticed the sister's gaze at the corn and her apparent understanding. He was impressed.
You could use a cage, but they prefer to be outside, or at least outside a cage. However, you can use this one I have over here, if you want one.
Keyes motioned to the cage. It was just big enough for Jones.

Manfred wandered back to the pigeon-master's shed and found young Keyes discussing something with a nun in the habit of St. Thomas.

"Apologies for interrupting, sirrah, but the Cardinal sent me here with your wages. He added a performance bonus for your excellent start hereabouts.

Keyes
Keyes looked at his wages. Even without the bonus, it was a large amount.
He wasn't sure if he had seen that much money in one spot.

"Thank you Manfred"
Keyes was awestruck enough that he couldn't think of what else to say.

Audrey curtseyed and kept her gaze held low at the messenger bearing the cardinal's colors. Still, her curiosity could not resist raising her eyes to appraise the man. He seemed a dedicated sort. He wore his uniform in the traditional sense. He was undoubtedly here to complete his misson and nothing more. Audrey would leave them to it.

"I thank you for the cage, Master Pigeoner, and, of course, for Jones. I promise you that I will not keep the dear bird within its bars overlong. Only to keep him safe for the journey to the Hospital of Saint Amelie. Speaking of which, I should probably begin my journey. I have tarried here long enough." She placed Jones in the cage gently. Turning back to the master pigeoner, she smiled softly and curtseyed. "I hope when next we meet it shall be for a longer spell. Good day."

Sister Audrey turned and exited the grounds of Westgate Manor.

After the nice little nun has left, Manfred walks over to the pigeon coup and addresses the new Pigeon master Trainer.

"Pardon, sirrah, but His Grace would like a word up to the Castle..."
Keyes
Ok, I will head there right away.
If i don't get lost on my way there, Keyes thought.

Manfred grinned at the uncertainty in young Keys' eyes.

"I told His Grace you might be a bit worried about finding your way on your own, but nobody listens to Manfred. Poor Manfred.

Not to worry, Sirrah, I shall lead you there me-self. His Grace would not approve of me sending his new Master of Pigeons astray, then, would he?

Follow old Manfred"

Manfred turned and led the way up to the castle.
