= [ORP] Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont

--Sir_james_blande
"Ale, miss! And as much small ale as you might spare to be taken to Wallace Castle."

Sir James had a twinkle in his eye as he passed the list to Blythe. The butler, Thackery and Missus Alice May were in charge of seeing to the needs of the eighteen refugee children in residence now in Wallace Castle. Those children had hardy appetites, the small ale would fortify them.
Sir James matched his step to Blythe's and smiled as they approached the store room.

"If I may say, m'lady, without it being meant in the least bit forward or fresh, you seem to have matured since those sleety days of winter when we were all in residence at the Inn at Riverwood, awaiting Lady Hikenai's marriage, and the opportunity to return to Barnstaple."
--Blythe
Blythe assisted Sir James in loading the small ale into the spring wagon. She then bought out two large baskets filled with fresh bread. The tavern baker was sister-in-law to several of the household staff at the castle, and they all felt an urgency to band together and take care of the children who had so recently come to make the castle their home. Sir James bowed to Blythe before climbing into the wagon and flipping the reins, his eyes sparkled and she thought to herself that he certainly was a clean and handsome man. Chivalrous, courtly manners, kind and patient....She returned to the front of the tavern and spied the parchment on the bar.

Blythe clutched the letter her sister Hoban had written her in one hand and her ale in the other as she joined Jane at the table. She perused the letter and then handed it to Jane to read.

Dearest Sister,

The enemy has now been on English soil for three weeks, and have shown no mercy to Carlisle. The markets are in shambles, the county and town government, the university, the mines are all in shambles, thanks to the oppressors. Egremont has become an independent town in hopes of warding off the seizure of their port. The good people of Cumberland have made great sacrifice to thwart the evilness expanding deeper into fair England.

A good number of your citizens have responded to the call, and have joined the forces that are steadily amassing. While most of England sits by and watches, the enemy becomes more emboldened. From an eyewitness to the events, I can say that England has yet to realize the potential calamity that lies just outside its windows.

Last night, an English army advanced upon the town of Dumfries in Scotland, attempting to wrest control of the capital of county Galloway and wrest away the prestige that they so flippantly gave to the invaders. The attack was stalemated, and now the Scots are as mad as hornets and calling for revenge. England should expect an escalation in the hostilities; the Scots are well versed in the practice of war, and, should the enjoin the battle, it may be a long and bloody time in store for England.

You cannot prepare yourself too soon! Produce as much food as you can, and begin stockpiling now. Every day spent procrastinating is valuable time lost. Cumberland will attest to that.

The enemy shows no mercy. Every day that they have their feet on English soil is a day too long. Those who desire to fight should answer the call and come to the aid of fair England.

I would urge you to inform all travelers preparing to enter Cumberland to contact one of the army commanders to let them know of their plans to enter the county. There are enemies within England who are already on the road to join with the NNGO and Fury. These traitors will be stopped before reaching their destination; the Kill List is expanding by the hour, and to avoid the possibility of being killed, notifying the commanders first would be most wise.

Please take care my dear sister,
Hoban

Jane Townes had been sitting in the tavern composing a letter to her cousin in Wiltshire when Blythe had approached her with the letter Blythe had received from Hoban. Blythe was eager to share the letter from her sister who had fought in Carlisle. Hoban had received the letter from another young woman who lived near Kendal, and it seemed the information was making a sort of circuit, perhaps rippling in a larger and large pattern, the word spreading, gravitating outward throughout the kingdom. When Jane read Blythe's letter she asked permission to include the information in her own letter to her cousin.

Jane herself had come from Carlisle and assisted in bringing the children from the refugee camp outside Carlisle to the castle outside Egremont. Lady Hikenai Wallace had arranged with the Lady Gabrielle for the eighteen orphans to come to the Wallace estate.

Lady Sassy Marius and her brother Osbert certainly had thier hands full now, Blythe giggled to herself, as if they didn't have them full enough already with James and Su-su alone!

But with this thought, Blythe stopped and a shadow crossed her face, for Su and her mother, Susanne had left days ago, to refugee south, hoping to outdistance the invaders from the north, should they push on into all of Cumberland as well. In the short time Su and Susanne had been at Wallace Castle, it was hard not to become fond of them, Blythe thought to herself and she said a little prayer that Jah would protect the young mother who was fleeing a cruel and cold estranged husband.
Hikenai
A short missive arrived at Kel's Bells tavern addressed to Lady Sassy Marius, Kel's sister.

Dumfries, Galloway county

Dear Sister,
I wanted you to hear this from me, and a kind volunteer is assisting me in writing to you today. I have survived the first nights bloodshed in Dumfries. I know not where Kel is but believe him to be in Carlisle still. If you hear from him or can get word to him, tell him I am recuperating slowly. Dear Sassy, I am relieved to see General Aisafe's army outside the gate of the city. I know we shall not falter in our endeavors, but oh how I wish I had never stepped foot on Scottish soil. I will follow my orders, I will see this out, for I am convinced of our missions necessity, but I fought against Coast, your kinsman, Sassy. Your own blood kin. My kin now. That weighs heavily on me, sister.
I am going to return to battle, once well, so do not worry about me Sassy.
Two armies of English now are outside the gates of Dumfries, would that more join us! But I hope we return to England without taking the life of another Scot.
Thank you sister for taking such good care of the eighteen orphans at the castle. Not an easy task I am sure but a needed one. I hope the little angels are all well, Sassy.
Give my love to our family! And tell our friends at Kel's Bells I send my love, as well, and my encouragement for them to go to Carlisle, it is never too late to join in that struggle!
Victory to England!
Hikenai Wallace

I am so tired. If only there was an end to this, but I even dream about baking bread! In the space of the past twenty four hours I baked two dozen loaves of bread, gave a half dozen toddlers baths, fed porridge to six babies, worked a ten hour shift at Kels Bells and slept six hours. And now.....Jah's teeth! The rumor is Osbert's leaving town, too.
--Quincey
The messenger was unmercifully hot. Sweat trickled down his back and annoyed him with it's tickle, for he arrived during the noon day, when the sun beat down relentlessly in what felt, to him, like the most swelteringly hot and humid July day he could remember in his twenty years....

Dumfries, Galloway County
Scotland

June 1458

Dear Sassy,
I am so anxious to return to Egremont , and should my court case be decided soon and I am free to leave, I am getting on the first ship I can find sailing far, far from here. I had thought to return to battle, Sassy, but have had a complete change of heart.
The sword I received when I became a knight in the Blood Oath Brotherhood is now destroyed. My shield is gone as well. I haven't the desire to even replace them, Sassy. I haven't the urge to continue to fight. I only want to return to Egremont for now and see if somehow I can set things right.
In the past few months, I have seen more evil, lies, duplicity and dishonesty, haughty looks, and self important posturing that I care to ever look upon again. I have heard the self aggrandizing blather, and the snarky spewing, of one too many------ and I have had done with it. In the end, it only drew me in, yet solved nothing, produced nothing beneficial. No good can come of such talk or actions.
So I have stayed by myself while in Dumfries, only venturing out to eat and for a rare ale. I have seen Caitilin while here, and met a few Scots, and a few of our fellow English, as well. I met a delightful young mother, Cedany. Her four mos old babe was in the tavern with her and she let me hold it. It was a bonny little thing, named Sorcha, which I believe she said meant 'shiny' (though I had though perhaps it meant red, as the babe had a thick head of red hair) and the darling little thing made me anxious to get to Egremont and the children at Wallace Castle.
Coast graciously told me he would testify for me. He knows the night before the battle, all was well with me, and all the Scots in the tavern. Really Sassy, I thought we would persuade them to take back the prestige from Anto, and when the battle began, I remember being dumbfounded. I should have known that for all the talk, blood shed would follow. I am still dumbfounded. Even now, law suits are being dismissed against members of General Helius's army and sentences that are imposed are light. The Scots are dealing with us kindly. They are dealing with the members of Aisafe's army fairly kindly.
I do not know what my sentence may be, but I hope to see you in Egremont before too much longer, Sassy!
All my love, and a big hug,
Hikenai

The messenger slid onto his barstool and gratefully accepted the ale the bar maid placed before him. He took a long drink, slaked his thirst for a moment, then sighed and said, "I have a message for Sassy Wallace Marius. Is she here?"
--Quincey
Quincey was soaked. He appeared to be drenched from the steady hissing downpour, not one hair on his head dry. He entered the tavern warily, after shaking off as much rain water as possible outside the entrance. Inside his great coat, beneath the a roll of extra parchment added to ensure dryness, he carried another letter from the Lady Hikenai Wallace.

My dear sisters Sassy and Lilith,
My heart is heavy as I write you. I have both good and bad news! My court case was discharged, upon the condition I apologize to the citizens for my involvement in the attack upon the town hall in Dumfries, in our attempt to seize back the prestige by forcing the Scots' hand. Oh, sisters, I am I sorry I ever came to Scotland. Our fight was not here, and now I am not only unable to continue to fight Anto, NNGO and Fury, but I am unable to even come home to Egremont! I am a prisoner of war of sorts now, here in Dumfries....for the duration of the conflict between England and Scotland! Never mind Anto now, I am on a kill list with the Scots. If I leave it is tantamount to suicide.
I have determined to make the best of the situation and, if my plans succeed, will write you soon of my preparations to go into business here in Dumfries. Stay strong, take care of each other, and thank you again for your kind care of the orphans of Carlisle!
Your loving sister,
Hikenai Wallace
Kelster
After eavesdropping on a conversation in his tavern in Carlisle, Kels Bells Too, Kelster could not stop pacing up and down with a long black cloak under his arm. I think I am going to try it, he muttered to himself. With Jah on my side, I may be able to see my Hikenai even if it is just for one night. Having been thinking about her, worrying about her every passing hour, all thoughts of reason seemed to disappear from his mind, a crazy attempt to cross the border alone, at night , see his wife and creep back again? Surely it was suicide? But these thoughts did not enter his head, just the vision of having his arms around his wife sending all sense of reason from his mind.

Smiling at the last customer to leave the tavern, Kel closed the door, locked it and then rushed into the back. Quickly putting on the long black cloak and a large hat that could conceal his face, he opened the back door of the tavern very quietly and locked it behind him. This was it, he thought to himself, he would see his wife tonight or die trying. Sneaking past two guards on the gates of Carlisle seemed pretty easy, they appeared to be very drunk. Making his way towards the hills that surrounded Carlisle, under the cover of total darkness, the clouds stooping the moon from giving him away, he started to climb the hill in front of him. This seemed to be too easy, as he was thinking that very thought he heard the sound of horses hooves and dived behind a rock, just as several guards on horseback thundered past. Standing up once more, breathing a sigh of relief he carried on his way.

As he made his slowly towards Dumfries, the guards seemed to be all over the countryside, sometimes having to crawl across the floor very slowly and quietly to avoid them, he edged ever closer to just over the Scottish border. In the distance, he saw the candle light from windows in Dumfries. Just then he heard a voice cry out, I think I heard something! Kel fell to the floor and stopped breathing for what seemed like a very long time as he heard footsteps within feet of his prostate body. Nah, I didnee hear a thing, another voice said and the footsteps moved away till he could no longer hear them. With his heart pounding he once again got to his feet and walked towards the town. Slipping past the guards at the gates he looked around for the tavern His wife had opened up there. Expecting it to be closed and be able to sneak in and see his love, he was amazed to see a sign above the door saying Hik's Kels Bells and it was still open. With his heart in his mouth, he walked towards the door to enter.......

Meanwhile in Dumfries, Scotland.........

Hikenai worked late. The steady stream of business had continued all evening with no let up, and Hik was happy her tavern was so well received by the community of Dumfries. She was unable to leave town. She was on a kill list, yes, but she was making her way in Dumfries, at last, after several weeks of the bleakest depression. Now, as she hurried to clear away the empty mugs and tankards, the remaining customers began to trickle to the bar, for a last shot of whisky, to throw down the last swallows of their ale, or to drift to the door, calling final goodbyes back to the few lagging behind. Business was good, indeed.
Hikenai had a living quarters of sorts arranged upstairs. It had amazed her, when she leased the building, that the interior bore such a resemblance to her apothecary shop in Egremont!
The kitchen area, back beyond the tavern storeroom, was much more developed than that of the building in Egremont, but other than that, the two buildings resembled themselves in their structure and their comfort. Hikenai felt she had come home when she found this building to transform into her tavern. Now, working here each day, and being able to retire to the small apartment upstairs each night, she felt closer to Kel than ever before!

Ohh my Jah, but she seems in good spirits I do hope she will be able to return home soon

Sassy's face looks worried, she goes and makes herself a big glass of some fine scottish whiskey, she drinks most of it in one just leaving a wee bit at bottom of glass
Sassy sits back down at the bar and starts to do Kel's accounts trying not to think about her dear sister Hik

Perrin walks into the tavern looking around as he heads to the bar. In need of a quiet drink after all the time on the lines it was good just to relax a bit. Sitting at a table he waves for a drink as his eyes fall on a stunning blond reading a parchment. He looks at her longer than he attended as he waited for his drink to be brought to him. noticing the concerned look on her face he shakes his head knowing it this close to the front lines it must have to do with the war.
