= [ORP] Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont

Scorebane
Perrin smiles as she holds his arm tight feeling her a bit unsteady.

“just lead the way Sassy and I will see you there safely. I am sure I will love your family home”

He holds her as they move through the dark street, the old soldier in him scanning the streets for trouble as they talk, walking towards the castle. He chuckles as she giiggles loving her sweet giggle

This letter came to Kel's Bells, addressed to the Lady Sassy. I placed it on the back of the counter, thinking if she did not come in and and find it, later I would take it to her at the castle. Maybe if I did, I would see Cuthbert! I knew he was there tutoring the children.

Oh, Jah! Why does my face always colour and feel so hot when I think of him?

Dumfries, Scotland
4 Aug. 1458

Dearest Sassy,
I am hoping that soon I will be on my way home to Egremont! I had thought to close my tavern here in Dumfries this week, but instead, restocked in time for the weekend. It is so difficult to see the townspeople with only high priced food on the market, when I know I have plenty right now, in my coffer. So, I restocked with enough to see us through the weekend, then I really must start packing things up.
It feels wonderful to at last begin to make plans for a trip home. As soon as I am sure it is completely safe I will leave. I am hoping to go further north into Scotland and then, eventually, book passage on a ship to bring me home. I cannot get there soon enough sister!
There is news that I thought to wait until I arrived to tell you, but I cannot keep to myself any longer. It is the best news, Sassy!
Kelster and I are expecting a baby the week of Christomas!
It is a miracle baby, this baby is, for months ago it survived my long trip to Barnstaple. I threw up every day I traveled! I drank like a fish! Then I returned to Cumberland to survive four battles of hard combat and nearly lost my life in Dumfries! Still this baby held on! Now it is thriving inside me! I eat like a horse, and certainly feel as healthy as one! I only hope I do not grow as large as one!
Oh Sassy, I am happier than I have been in so long, without Kel beside me. Having this little baby of ours to think of, it seems he is with me, although he is not. He was able to sneak into Dumfries for a visit! It was really very exciting-----and especially since he told me I was pregnant! Since I never had a child with my first husband before his death, I always thought I could not have children! I dared not hope, even though all the signs were there! Then Kel arrived and took one look at me and that was the first question he asked me! And I knew! I knew it was true!
I cannot wait to see you, sister, and to return to Egremont and Wallace Castle to await the birth of this babe. I am the luckiest woman in the world, Sassy!
Please take care, Sassy, and pray we meet soon!
Love always,
Hikenai

I took the letter from the Lady Sassy. I could tell she had been crying and I was concerned until I saw the letter was addressed to Hikenai. Those were happy tears I was sure!

Cuthbert might be a bit difficult to locate at the castle, but I was glad Lady Sass had asked me to see the letter got to Hikenai. I knew the messenger the Wallace's always used was even now, probably lounging in the courtyard at Wallace Castle, swapping tales with some of the stable lads! Cuthbert rarely wasted time with those lackeys, but I knew they might know where he was! I flew down the aisle in the tavern and headed straight for the door.

I will be back later, Lady Sassy! I will get this taken care of for you right away! The messenger will get this to Lady Hikenai straight away!

I had been directed by Blythe Williams, the proprietor of the Lady Hikenai Apothecary Shop to inquire if Lady Wallace might need my assistance with anything. I had gone into the apothecary shop seeking relief. I'd ridden hard all the previous evening. The tension in my neck and head was unbearable but the potion she sold me did me good. It took care of the pain and I felt thoroughly restored. Twas then Miss Williams asked upon my return trip to Keswick and beyond that I perhaps convey additional correspondence from the Lady Wallace to other family members. It is often I do such work for the Wallace family, having been employed by the lady Hikenai Wallace, year before last, for just that purpose.

The man sat down at the bar and inclined his head at the bartender. An ale was placed before him and he looked around swiftly, hoping to see the Lady Sassy Wallace herself. At the thought of approaching her himself, though, his confidence began to falter, however. This was a most sensitive issue with Lothar for he would become a bumbling idiot around certain women at times. He was afraid that Lady Sassy might be one of those women.
Hikenai
Hikenai was back! She came through the doors of Kel's Bells filled with the energy only pregnant women know, the drive to accomplish, to lay up, to store, to prepare, to nest.

Today, Hikenai's nesting took the form of baking bread there in the kitchen of Kel's Bells Tavern. She kneaded the yeasty dough, inhaling the aroma already emanating from the great ovens. She felt very encouraged. Yes, the invaders were dwindling, England was going to enjoy a respite from war. She and Kel had Christomas to plan! That thought sent Hikenai suddenly daydreaming of the wonderful Christomas parties they could host at Kel's Bells! She thought of the scarlet ribbons, the evergreen bows, the finest spiced wine, the candlelight, the music, the dancing....watching the dancing, she thought to herself as she gazed down at her stomach and smiled. By Christomas, I will be very, very big!

Hikenai heard the bell in the front of the tavern, indicating a customer had arrived. She knew Blythe had gone to the apothecary shop, so she quickly nodded to the cook and started for the front of the tavern, still thinking of her and Kel's baby, and smiling.

I opened the tavern early this morning. Cook had taken ill last night and had not been able to tidy up. Lady Hik, still on her land hunting expedition near Penrith, and Lord Kel being on patrol with the army, I took it upon myself to just send poor Cook on home and close the kitchen. Of course, now, I do regret it for she is very sick today, as well. So I have the clean up to do in addition to the cooking. And truth be known, I am a poor cook for great gatherings! Oh certainly I might prepare a bit to eat for a few around a table, but to keep the meal going all day? My confidence is shaken and I fear I must keep the kitchen closed! I hope no one orders anything but bread today! Oh Jah!
Kelster
As the battle seemed now to be finally over, the so very long months of being in the army, defending Cumberland, England, Kel walked towards his tavern. It had been so very long now since he had last stood behind it's bar. He remembered the good times he had there then, the people, the faces, the joy of seeing his customers . It was a happy time for him, behind that bar with his love, his wife, Hikenai. He so hoped now those times would return quickly.

Placing his hand upon the tavern door he pushed it open. The start of a new day, a new dawn for Egremont, he walked in. Smelling something cooking from the back he instantly knew it was not his wife baking today as the smell of her food always made his mouth water. Placing his sword and shield behind the bar he started to clean it in anticipation of his first customer since he came back from the battle. Thinking that it was not the end of the war, just a very long battle, he hoped, for a very long time, Cumberland would be peaceful. Now.he muttered to himself. it's time to have fun for a while. Then he just waited for his first customer to arrive.

Hikenai
How now, husband!

She came through the doors of the tavern laughing, carrying several bundles scooped under her chin with one arm, two rolls of bright yellow cloth taller than she was were clutched with the other arm, and in one hand she held a basket crammed with an assortment of purchases for the baby. Hikenai placed the bolts of cloth on the table before Kelster, as she allowed the bundles to tumble on top of the sunny fabric. She knelt to place her basket on the floor at his feet, quickly kissed him on the lips, her lower lip pouting somewhat as she raised her face from Kel's. Hikenai had a more solemn expression on her face than she normally wore.

Blainwolfe is back, you know.....I should like to go see her soon.... Hikenai remembered those long months ago, when she had witnessed the priestess Anna trying to wrestle a bed out of Bw's house. Hikenai thought Blainewolfe had given Anna the bed before she and Spot had left Egremont. She had hoped to prevent any further damage from being done to Bw's house, but that was unavoidable. Anna was lucky they had not pulled the house down when they hooked Drambuie up the bed frame! I know she will discover I unwittingly aided and abetted Anna! Hikenai looked questioningly at Kel. It was breaking and entering. It had been for a good cause, though, Hikenai remembered. United had needed a bed!

Guess I better talk to Bw before she puts me in jail!

In the evening before closing the door is opened, a figure enters the Tavern walks over to the bar, to the bartender he speaks with a scottish accent.

This is a package for Kelster Wallace, there are instructions inside, see that he gets it.

He will know who it is from

I will be watching from the corner

The man leaves the package with seems to contain a note and a bottle

The figure turns and goes and takes a seat near a window in a darkened corner.
Kelster
Listening to his love talk about the mess at Bw's house, Kel cannot help but smile to himself. He had sent a message to Tod in Scotland about the insane goings on there, which were quite normal things to happen at Bw's house as Kel had been a witness to on so many occasions.

Guess I better talk to Bw before she puts me in jail!

Not being able to stop himself from laughing at the current situation, He tried to keep a straight face and spoke to Hik.

Don't worry my love , I think Bw is used to this kind of thing. With sisters like Sheo and Anna it happens all the time, I think she may be in later. Do not worry.

Just then, as he is talking to his Hik, he sees a strange man approach the bar and talk to the Blythe.

This is a package for Kelster Wallace, there are instructions inside, see that he gets it.

He will know who it is from

I will be watching from the corner

Then Blythe comes across to him and hands him a message.

Dearest Mistress

It has been brought to my attention that you are in desperate need of my services.

Tis a shame that you were so miserly with your bid for me.

Aye if you were as good a warrior as you are merchant, I would be there assisting you now.

Also that the guards at the castle we so lax that I was able to escape back to Scotland and freedom.

I belive one of the jobs I had to do was fix your broken bed. Alas I think that is a task to great even for my skills.

I am good at fixing doors as my good friend Kel and Hik can attest.

But for now I am swimming in endless tubs of scottish whisky and relaxing on Highland cattle rugs infront of the warm fires of my home.

Instead of a trying to sleep in a creature infested, broken down hovel, that appears to be empty of the fine drop of scotland.

There is nothing like the feeling of freedom, I am not sure how it compares to the Autum wind howling throught your door.
Warmest regards from his cozy home

Your nearly Slave
Tod

Smiling to himself and showing the message to Hik, he speaks to blythe. Go and tell the messenger the letter will be deliverd and give him ale on the house Blythe.

The man takes the ale and nods to Blyth.

He then gets up and walks over to Kel and Hik.

My Lord Lady, my employer requests that you nail the letter to mentioned abode so that the Lady of the house may read it.

My thanks for the ale, it was a long journey to get

I hope you enjoy the bottle, my employer said that as for the timely warning to get out of town
Hikenai
This is a package for Kelster Wallace, there are instructions inside, see that he gets it.
Hikenai forgot all about the bed and the possibility of criminal charges when the messenger arrived. He had spoken with Blythe first, but soon it was apparent it was Kel the man sought. He handed over the missive, Kelster had read it, and now handed it to Hikenai.
Go and tell the messenger the letter will be deliverd and give him ale on the house Blythe. Hikenai took the letter from Kelster and nodded to Blythe. The young woman was clearly intrigued by the letter, too, but she turned to draw the ale, as Hikenai read the message silently, but with great interest. Hik only felt a pang of conscience, her natural curiosity pushing her on to disregard the privacy of the 'mistress' to whom the letter was addressed.

Well thank you my good man, I will certainly see she gets the letter. Take care on you're journey home. Jah speed to you.

After the messenger left, Kel turned to his wife and spoke in a whisper to her. I think this is some sort of love letter darling. Although it does seem a little strange. Love the Bw way I suppose.
