= [ORP] Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont

--Blythe

Jah be praised! Hikenai is here! Blythe thought to herself with great relief. She had only wanted to make polite conversation with the woman, not set her off on another tangent of fussing! When Blythe mentioned the herbs, she thought it an area of common interest, yet she only seemed to annoy the old lady further!

Well, mum, here is Lady Hikenai now!

Blythe smiled, despite her faint annoyance with the old woman's brusque manner, and with bit of vague apprehension, too, she gestured toward her employer. Hikenai came waddling up from the back of the tavern with the look of genuine delight upon her face.

Jah help Hikenai, is she ever in for a shock! Blythe thought to herself. The old battleax was enough to scare the babe out of her!
Hikenai
Well, mum, here is Lady Hikenai now!

There she was! Rhea! Hikenai came quickly from the kitchen to join the old woman before the fire. So many memories rushed through Hik's mind as she reached out to take Rhea's gnarled, leathery old hand in her own. The rheumy, ancient eyes stared deeply into Hikenai's, but the iris were no longer hawk like, as Hikenai remembered, for age had clouded them a little. Rhea was also surprisingly small! She had loomed larger in Hikenai's memory, for Rhea had stood up to Elizabeth de Bevill on Hikenai's behalf! In Hik's mind's eye, Rhea had been imposing, staunch, larger.....still it had been years, and they had imprinted themselves on Rhea, and now, she was wizened, appeared frail, brittle, aged....
I am so happy to see you, Rhea! Thank you for coming, for agreeing to make the trip! As you can see, my time will come soon! And Hikenai smiled, as she gestured to her mid section. She had grown larger just this past week, the babe shifting it's weight downward, causing Hikenai to move about even more clumsily than before. Indeed, she was so heavy she no longer was comfortable sitting, standing or reclining! I wanted to meet you here at the tavern, Rhea. So that we might have a private, quiet moment before going on to the castle. My husband, Kelster, and I are entertaining at the castle, at the moment, with many houseguests staying with us, and Christomas festivities taking place daily. I have married into a large family, you see, with a niece, and three nephews, and their father, who lives with us, too, and a sister-in-law....and I have a daughter, Neonea, whom you will meet, and well, it's....it's rather a noisy, busy time at the castle, and I thought, perhaps, we might talk, and get reacquainted here, before we go on to the castle where there is so much going on....

Hikenai's voice trailed off, as if she had prattled on too long, talking to Rhea in such a way. But it was true, she did want a quiet moment with Rhea. She had been a young girl the last time she saw the woman.

Well, mum, here is Lady Hikenai now!

Rhea looked up, her head cocking bird-like on her wattley neck as Hikenai approached. Her eyes ran over the woman's face and then down to her feet. She listened as Hik greeted her and took her hand.

Quote:
...As you can see, my time will come soon!

Rhea gave a snort at that, nodding. She started to answer, but the woman continued on, telling her about the family she had now and the party.

"Well, now, I see tha' took after the de Bevills with thy hair. Should have been named Whitehead, they should, rather than de Bevill. But what can tha' be thinking, out and about and so close to thy time of confinement? For that matter, why are tha' not lying in already?"

Her eyes dropped to Hikenai's gravid stomach again, then back up to her face before she glanced briefly around the tavern.

"No, don't answer that. We'd be hard pressed to have a private conversation here, I wot, with all and sundry walking past. Tha' hardly resembles the sprat I remember, with thy mother bringing thee for treatment. Had any spells lately? Tell me honestly now, I pray thee, else I'll not know all I need. And if we'll be needing to travel somewhere else, best we do it soon before I get too comfortable!"

Hikenai
Hikenai nodded in response to Rhea's no nonsense reply. Any apprehensions she still held regarding the falling sickness and the advent of the baby was laid aside by the firm manner in which Rhea questioned her. All Hikenai's faith rested in the little wizened, gnarled, capable hands of Rhea!
Rhea said,
Quote:

The last full spell I had was two years ago, Rhea, back in Barnstaple! A bit over a year ago I thought I would have a spell, for I had a terrible headache while watching a joust, but the spell never came on completely.....I only smelled the sage, and felt myself grow faint, but I did not fall, I saw nothing but the things of this world! And since that day I have never again had a spell!
Hikenai spoke the words with confidence, happy to report this to the woman who had seen her through the perilous and grievous remedies her foster mother had used to rid Hik of the falling sickness.
Ah, Rhea, let's go on to the castle! Sir James shall gather up your bags and belongings and we shall have you comfortably settled into a room there! There will be plenty of time tomorrow to talk, after you have rested!

--Blythe
Blythe returned to work at the tavern, relieved to make her getaway from Wallace Castle. Since Rhea's arrival, she had walked on egg shells around that woman! What a sharp toothed old biddie Rhea was! On one hand, Blythe was relieved Hikenai had such a knowledgeable midwife, one well learned regarding the malady Hik suffered from------but from talking to Sir James about Rhea's actions on the trip from Beeston, Blythe felt certain she would have HAD a spell of some sort, herself, if she'd been required to deal with Rhea for an extended period of time!

Even now, she felt she needed a drink! And Blythe was not even much of a drinker! Yet, sitting down at the bar, she clasped her shot of whiskey and downed it stoutly. Rhea's tongue and brusque manner was enough to make a saint curse!
--Sir.james.bland
Sir James entered the tavern and took a seat next to Blythe.

How are you today, Mistress Blythe? He said gravely. He had been on edge, ever since returning to Egremont a couple of nights ago with the little aged woman he had escorted from Beeston. Rhea had settled into the Wallace household, awaiting the imminent birth. Sir James, having known Lady Hikenai for several years, since his retirement from the Blood Oath Brotherhood, had developed a fatherly fondness for Hik. He was quite concerned for her well being-----her brother Chrisiusmaximus had confided in him concerning the peculiar condition which sometimes gripped his sister. In escorting Lady Hikenai from Barnstaple to Egremont for Chris, James was vigilant for any sign of the falling sickness, but blessedly there had been none!

Sir James, I am well, as I hope are you, this fine morn....pray Jah today is not the day of Lady Hikenai' s babe's birth. Not this saint's day, m'lord James!

Sir James was not particularly susperstitious, but he was curious...And why not, m'lady?

Tis the day of the Holy Innocents! That evil King Herod had all boy babes slaughtered on this day, according to history, according to the legend! Blythe said this in horror! Blythe was quite superstitious! To her thinking the babe needed a more auspicious day on which to make it's arrival than this! The birth of the Wallace babe would be a day of celebration, and Blythe wanted no hint of sadness to mar it.
--Blythe
Blythe returned to the area behind the bar and took down a tankard from the shelf. She drew the ale for Sir James, placing it on the counter before him. He eyed her with a small smile playing about his lips.
Aye, I am a bit well read....she said, hoping Sir James knew she was trying not to sound overly proud, Why, as a former knight, m'lord, did you not go on a crusade to the east? I have have heard all the legends....Mayhap, you have stories as well? And she leaned toward Sir James as she said this.
In his youth, Sir James was squire to a knight who had gone on a pilgrimage to the holy land of the Christos. He had left James behind, to watch over his lands, and serve his family. When Sir James joined the Blood Oath Brotherhood, the time had never come for him to go to the Mediterranean, and it was one of his few regrets----that, and his not having found true love, nor founded a family of his own.
He answered Blythe, a bit of chagrin in his voice...
Nay, m'lady, my stories all concern my exploits in Scotland and England!
Not catching his wistful tone, Blythe went on, still thinking of saints, as well as auspicious days, and old wives tales,
D'you know anything about relics though? Saint's relics? I was thinking about such things wondering if they.....Oh! My sister Hoban always said my head was full of many useless thoughts, but wondered if Hikenai would benefit, well.....from.....
At that moment, the tavern door flew open and a blast of icy air filled the immediate area. A cloud of snow swirled into the entryway and settled on the floor before the door. The happy newcomers strode up to the bar and Blythe, preparing to draw their ale, and knew that, for now, her conversation with the Sir James was over.
--Mistress.fallenfast
Amelia Fallenfast had come to Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont upon her return from Carlisle. She had gone to the capital to see if she could not gain an audience with Cumberland's former Duchess, Lucy Lawless. Given the lady was evidently no longer highly regarded in Cumberland, her failure to meet with the woman was a blessing! Upon Mistress Fallenfast's arrival in Carlisle, it seemed all the residents were talking about the former Duchess, her alledged theft of county property. Mistress Fallenfast had dodged the fate of guilt by association by mere hours, she thought! If she had received the consent of Lady Lucy, to join her, she would have found herself in the center of scandal.

I must look to my honor, Mistress Fallenfast muttered to herself, as she pushed open the door to the tavern, and came inside from the icy, sleet and snow mix that had been falling for hours. Her eyes immediately were riveted to the bar. There sat Sir James! Just the man I want to see, she told herself, feeling a mixture of arousal and relief, along with a tiny spark of jealosy. His eyes seemed riveted to the pretty young bar maid.
--John.blackstone
He came in right behind the gentlewoman, shaking snow from his full beard and burly arms. John went straight to the bar and took a seat, nodded at Sir James and gave Blythe a smile. He was glad his work was done for the day. Ready for a drink, he had arrived at Kel's Bells in plenty of time to see the young woman back to Wallace Castle. He had an idea the party was still continuing there, and as he knew Blythe doubled as Hikenai's personal assistant and protege' he was in hopes of enjoying the atmosphere with Mistress Blythe.

John raised his eyebrow at Mistress Fallenfast. He knew her by reputation......
--Blythe
When the lady came through the door, Sir James became all distracted. He seemed to nervously glance about and sputtered, in quite the agitated manner, when he made room for Mistress Fallenfast at the bar.

Mistress Amelia, may I help you with your cloak!?
I acknowledged her cold stare with a look of poise. M'lady, what may I serve you? I stood my straightest behind the bar. The mulled wine I served her was Kel's Bells finest, yet, she turned her haughty nose up, wrinkling it prettily for the benefit of Sir James. He didn't see the disdain clearly evident on her face. He thought her averse to drinking! I knew, however, she felt herself in too high a station in life than to enjoy the wine served here, even of so fine an establishment as Kel's Bells.

'Tis bitter cold, it is! And I just returned from Carlisle, from going to see...er,....well, I have been traveling this holiday season. So many friends to visit, to whom I must spread good cheer!

She was the one to put on airs, to pretend to be gentry, to be nobility. She had the luck, the sheer happenstance, to be born to a successful merchant! She was as common born as I was, yet she dared to look down her nose at those such as myself, who worked for a livelihood.

If I ever had the good fortune to advance my station in life, I would not spend my time idly gambling, traveling and tralalalalaing all over the country side as did Mistress Fallenfast. My good luck would extend to benefit the needs of others! I would be a philanthropist, a kind and gentle patron of the arts, and a friend to musicians!

Happily, dancing would soon begin! I saw the house musicians having tuned their instruments, pause for a moment, as they began to set up for their first song. I smiled and gave John Blackstone a quick wink as he joined the Sir James and Mistress Fallenfast at the bar. He rolled his eyes and nearly laughed aloud at the look he shot the snooty snob!
--Sir.james.bland
Jah's teeth and bones, he was hung over from drinking late into the night! Amelia Fallenfast had entered Kel's Bells tavern the night before and Sir James had sat drinking with her while the raucous music played and then night turned into a blur of laughter and noise! She was a bit high strung, the Mistress Amelia was, but she did have a way of entertaining a man! It is time for me to cut down on my drinking, he thought wearily to himself, for although Amelia did have a way about her, he could not remember just what way that was! The night was a blank after he left the tavern with her and he suspected he had blacked out the best part!

In his hand, he clutched the Lady Hikenai's missive, which he rode into Egremont to commit into safe keeping with a trusted messenger who was leaving poste haste for Wiltshire! The messenger even now was awaiting Sir James at Kel's Bells, the scene of last nights drunken debacle!

With her time grown short, for the new baby's birth, Sir James knew seeing the missive off would put Lady Hikenai's mind at ease.

To: Dame Millicent Reine, Countess of Portsmouth
Mayor of Marlborough
Marlborough, Wiltshire

December 29, 1458
Egremont, Cumberland
Wallace Castle

My lady Countess,
I hope this missive finds you in good health and enjoying holiday festivities.

You and I are not acquainted, but your legal expertise was recounted to me by the late Spotacus Balintyne. I have a matter I would trust to no other than one such as yourself, for I fear my husband and I have need of a skillful barrister, in complete understanding of the law. In order to not take up much of your time, I shall come right to the point.

My husband and I wish to finalize the adoption of a six year old girl, Neonea, who came to us one cold and snowy night while we had dinner at our tavern in Egremont. She now resides with us at Wallace Castle. She was suffering from exposure and malnutrition when she first arrived, and could only tell us first names of people we supposed she had traveled with before becoming somehow separated from them. It is my belief she was abandoned. She tells us she hails from Lanark, Scotland, and speaks with a Scottish brogue.

In loving the child, and remembering the sorry state she was in when she first appeared at our tavern, I have a grave concern someone from her past might surface and attempt to claim the child, separating her from the stable, loving and nurturing home she presently has with us! If that were ever to be the case, my husband, Kelster Wallace, and I would wish to retain the most knowledgeable and formidable barrister we could possibly have to represent us. Remembering how highly Spotacus spoke of you, I felt strongly compelled to approach you before all others.

Due to Neonea's tender age, she is unable to relate to us the circumstances surrounding her separation from family and friends. This might be a case of simple, uncomplicated adoption----or at some point we might be in for a custody battle. Nonetheless, I wish to be prepared with the best legal counsel we can arrange on behalf of our daughter, Neonea, who has blessed our household with her angelic presence.

Thank you for reading this and for giving it consideration. I hope to hear from you shortly. If you are unable to assist us, perhaps you might be so kind as to refer us to a barrister who might not be already engaged, and would have the time to take our case.

Thank you again,
Hikenai Wallace
--Martin_
Martin held the missive for a moment, bearing the Wallace seal. It felt weighty, important. Carefully, he tucked it into the front of his traveling bag, slipped it smoothly into the Book of Virtues he carried within the leather satchel, and then straightened up.

Please tell the Lord and Lady Wallace I shall ride south with an armed retinue. We will travel hard until we reach Wiltshire, and the missive shall reach the mayor of Wiltshire as soon as possible!

The older man arched one eyebrow, and said, Tis known that the Countess of Portsmouth is a formidible opponent in a court of law! I would be loathe to find myself on the wrong side of the law, were she the prosecutor! Sir James Bland laughed with a short "hrrrph'!

Just yesterday he was making his way throught the Cumberland marketplace and the villagers were abuzz with talk of a former Duchess who, some said, had outstepped the arm of the law. Somehow, Martin doubted that, however, for commoner or nobility, he thought briefly, destiny has a way with dealing out just desserts.

Ah! My hangover is wearing off and, as usual, my sweet tooth is prompting me!
And off he went to the kitchen of Kels' Bells tavern, to see if Maxine had anything sweet for him.
--Sir.james.bland
The honey cakes were what the physician ordered, he thought with relish, and he popped the last of them in his mouth as he watched Martin ride off. The early morning of Egremont was slow, the villagers and merchants beginning to spill out on to the streets, the air frosty, the sun dully shone through a sky ivory white with cloud cover.

Sir James pulled himself up into the saddle and headed for Carlisle. He'd been given several days off duty, and wanted to go to the capital. Scots in town, he'd heard....one being the very judge in Galloway who'd discharged the charges against Lady Hikenai! Sir James wanted to shake his hand.
The time in Dumfries had been very hard on Hikenai, but now...he smiled. Sir James thought of the excitement at Wallace Castle this morning as Lady Hikenai went into labor with her babe. Ah, maybe his trip to Carlisle might wait a day or so, and he turned his hunter back in the direction of Wallace Castle.
--Blythe
Blythe took Neo into Egremont, to stop in at at the tavern and, hopefully, run into John Blackstone. Blythe could not think of anyway to approach him at Wallace forge that might not seem forward. She hoped he would come to the tavern to break his fast.

Hikenai lay in her bed that morning still laboring to bring the babe into the world. The guests at the castle still filled the dining hall, wandered in and out of the great room, the sitting room, the foyer, and up and down the steps to the various bedchambers. There was still drinking and feasting, music and merriment continuing, as the days past into Twelfth Night. James, Roland, Allysum and Cuthbert were all off with Judge Osbert, their father. There had been no other children at the castle for Neo to play with once she and James had fed the squirrels, and James had left with Judge Osbert.

This is luckiest day your baby brother or sister could be born, Neo! We must celebrate! The musicians may be at the tavern. Do you feel like dancing?

Blythe had taken the child out of the castle, so she might not be on hand to hear the howls of Lady Hikenai, giving birth upstairs, while the guests in the castle laughed and made merry. As the sledge pulled up before the tavern entrance, Blythe carefully helped Neo down into the deep snow.

Once we are done here Neo, we can go see the baby llama, Winston, that Master Corster has given your mama!

Neonea
I nodded happily, "Oh yes, I love to dance. Dancing makes the flowers grow! I exclaimed, happy to be anywhere. I wondered what was happening back at the castle, but I liked the tavern too. The snow was very deep, and as I took big steps to get through it, I looked up at Blythe, clutching her hand with a strange look over my face. I smiled, but it was apparent that I had no idea what she was talking about

"A ...L-yamma?"
