= [ORP] Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont

--Blythe
As Blythe held steady to the tiny hand, the urge to pick Neonea up and carry her was very strong. Thank Jah she had come to Wallace castle before the snows! The woman could not imagine what would have happened to the wee child had she been left, alone, and to her own devices in such cruel, unforgiving weather such as this!

A l-yamma? As she repressed the urge to giggle at Neonea's pronunciation, Blythe opened the door to the tavern, and steered the child inside.

Ah, an animal, a bit of a strange one, at that, to my way of thinking, for I never saw one before---not 'til Master Corster gave this one to Hikenai, Neo! 'Tis a bit furry, like a lamb, and a long neck....but being a baby...um, this one is small....and...
Blythe stopped. She really knew nothing about the strange animal! It appeared oddly like a sheep, but it's neck was just incredibly long! Hikenai had said she thought it would be a rather tame animal, and intelligent, perhaps, much like a dog or horse. It had large, deep brown eyes and when Hikenai had shown it to Blythe, the expression on it's little face was angelic and sweet! After we have something to eat, we shall go see the llama, Neonea. I am curious as to what you might think of the little thing.
As they entered the tavern, Blythe was met with the sight of John Blackstone, already seated at one of the tables. She waved at him, wondering about what sat before his plate and tankard. It appeared that two squirrels----rather shiny, metallic squirrels of some sort---might be perched on the rim, helping themselves to his food!

Neonea, would you like to meet a friend of mine?
Blythe whispered to Neonea, unable to take her eyes from the strange sight! The tavern was beginning to fill up with customers, and she noticed many of them were tittering, and cutting their eyes over at John, and the strange table setting! John, however, seemed oblivious to all and his eyes gleamed, an amused smile playing about the corners of his lips, as Blythe and Neonea approached!
--John.blackstone
Ah, 'tis better than I'd hoped! She is here, and bringing the young lass with her! John thought this, with wonder. Only an hour earlier, he had gathered up the toys, after carefully bathing and combing his shaggy head of hair, half shot with gray now, and had left the blacksmith shop to come to Kel's Bells with the intention of, hopefully, running into Blythe.

As John Blackstone sat, eating his breakfast, and the late morning crowd began to fill Kel's Bells tavern, however, the clink of tankards and tableware had not distracted him from watching the door. Now, to his great satisfaction, Blythe Williams entered, leading the little Neonea Wallace by the hand!

Sitting before him, were the stuffed squirrels wearing the tiny armor he had fashioned at Wallace Forge. As blacksmith, he was accustomed to lifting the iron ore, working with the hammers and heavy implements, as he labored to produce axes, swords, armor and tools. But this fine work, the tiny armor so delicately wrought to outfit the furry little knights, had brought him much pleasure. Someday he hoped to have children of his own, and it pleased him that, in this cruel and hard world, he could produce something that might bring a smile to the face of a child-----and that he could do something that might endear him to the heart of Blythe Williams!

Neonea
As we entered, and I listened to Blythe explain what a Llama was, I decided maybe it would be best to see the animal before making a solid judgement on it. A sheep with a long neck, that thought stuck in my mind and had me grinning.

I nodded at Blythe as she offered to introduce me to one of her friends, and upon setting my blue eyes on the squirrels at the table with the man, I really hoped that was him. The closer we got to him, the happier and more excited I got.

"Oh! He has squirrels!" I squeaks, looking up at Blythe. "And look! They're wearing real armor!"

He stood up as Blythe and the child approached. The look on his face one of excitement, as his countenance lit up, and joy streamed from his smile.

Neonea said to Blythe as they neared the table,
Quote:

........look! They're wearing real armor!"

John heard the giddy sound in the little one's voice, but could not take his eyes from Blythe's face. It did seem to him that she was suddenly looking upon him in a different way!

Ah, my ladies! He said with a flourish, as they reached the table. Would you care to join me, I hope? He reached out gallantly and pulled out two chairs from the table. Then, as he smiled at Neonea, he said, You are just who I had hoped to see, for I work for your mother at Wallace Forge. My name is John Blackstone, and my little friends here need a new home! Would you like to take care of them?
And John pointed at the toy squirrels, as he winked at Blythe.
Neonea
Without hesitation, I joined John at his table and greeted him, but paid closer attention to the squirrels. "Hello John Blackstone..." Concern rushed through me, for they had looked so real, I had assumed they were. But, they did not move. Furrowing my eyebrows with concern, I looked up at John, "What's wrong with them? Why aren't they moving?" I thought maybe that they were scared of me, so I laid my arms down on the table, and my head onto my arms, giving them a closer look to figure things out.

Why, er.....John stopped for a moment, unable to answer the child, for it hadn't occured to him she would not see the squirrels as toys. His soft heart twisted a little, for he realized the life she had lived before coming to the Wallace's had not included articles of childhood such as playthings.

Well, my lassy, they are not real squirrels. They are little creatures you can take home, though, and pretend they are real.....you can pretend they are guarding the castle!
John was aghast. What if she realized they had been real squirrels, but were now dead, and stuffed? Aughh, he thought, I'd not counted on her being so sharp a wee child!

John sat at the table, staring helplessly at Blythe, fervently hoping that Neonea, hard life though she had had, thus far, still engaged in the usual childhood pursuits of the imagination. Otherwise, she might be horrified to realize these critters were once living, breathing little beings, now preserved and displayed, however whimsically, wearing the armor he had created for them!
--Blythe
Quote:
"Hello John Blackstone.."
Blythe and Neo arrived at the table, and John's manners impressed the young woman, as he rose and pulled their chairs out for them. She smiled, with an amused sort of expression at the armored squirrels perched next to John's plate. No sooner had Blythe thought to herself how sweetly Neo responded to John, than she caught sight of the child's confused face as Neo looked upon the toys and said,
Quote:

What's wrong with them? Why aren't they moving?"

She nearly laughed but the look in John's eyes kept her in check.
Well, my lassy, they are not real squirrels. They are little creatures you can take home, though, and pretend they are real.....you can pretend they are guarding the castle! As John reassured the child, Blythe realized that John was touched by Neo's innocence, and her apparently not recognizing the little animals as playthings for a child. Even though Blythe had not grown up accustomed at all to luxury, she had been afforded the security that little Neonea had not, perhaps, known. It made Blythe want all the more to be kind to Neonea, and as she surveyed the tender expression on John's face, it made her appreciate his sensitivity and thoughtfulness toward the child.
That's right Neo, they are playthings..... like your dolls....Are you ready for a bite to eat? Maybe some of Maxine's little meat pies, some milk, and then her delicious apple pie, before we go out to see the llama? Blythe smiled at John then, as she fiddled with the napkin before her on the table. And maybe if John doesn't have to return to the forge right away, he might like to come with us later, to see the llama, too? Then we are going straight back to the castle, for I expect your papa is wondering where we have gotten off to on such a snowy day! And your mama.....well...maybe she has something to show you by now! With these last words Blythe smiled knowingly at John and winked!
So, Neonea, do the little meat pies sound good to you?
Neonea
I listened carefully to the explination he was offering me, and looked at Blythe as she confirmed what John was saying to me. I nodded when she asked if I was hungry. I was, and the mention of milk reminded me just how hungry I was. I looked at John and smiled at him, but my attention was quickly averted back to Blythe when she mentioned mama and papa. I grinned, and then let my attention float back towards the little toy squirells.

"They look really really real."

Blythe laughed at the squirrels, and looked at John again in appreciation.

Yes, they do look real, and look at the armor they wear! I wonder if Lady Aefernum would like to outfit the Commander in such finery? Little knight that he is.

It was amazing to Blythe that Lady Aef had a trained army of squirrels at her command. Of course, she thought to herself, they would wear no armor, such as this, but still it was very amusing to consider.

They were soon served their food. The little meat pies were succulent, the milk cold and sweet, and Neonea, as usual, exhibited exquisite manners.
Blythe examined John's face closely as he watched the child. Who would have thought, at heart, the blacksmith was possibly such a family man?

As they finished their meal, Blythe looked at Neo and said, Now shall we go see the baby llama?
Neonea
I nodded and looked at Blythe, "Maybe. I'll ask her. Can I--- oops, May I put them in my bag, Please?" I asked John. If his answer was yes, I would scoop the little play toys into my leather pouch that I always had with me. It had the initial C. carved into the bottom right corner, and it was old and worn. But I never left it behind, no matter where I went, no matter how dirty it was, or how worn. If he told me no, then I would smile and go on about my merry way, without so much as a pout. I was not one to just take.

When we finished eaten, I cleaned off my hands and readied myself to go see, for the very first time, a llama. I was curious about it, which struck my excitement cord that had me rushing to get my coat and mittens on.

"Yes, I am ready!!"

Sassy was sat in the tavern on her travels with Scorebane they had made it halfway home, Sassy is so excited about getting home she has missed her family in friends in the 5 months she has been away.
A young messenger arrives in the tavern
Is Lady Sassy Wallace here as I Have a letter here from Lady Hikenai

Sassy looks up
I am Lady Sassy Wallace

the messenger passes Lady Sassy the letter

Why thank you young man
Sassy passes the young man a few pieces of silver for his trouble

Sassy then goes and sits in the corner of the tavern and opens up her letter
Sassy smiles as she reads it

Jan.9, 1459
Wallace Castle
Egremont, Cumberland

Dearest Sassy,
I hope this letter finds you and Perrin healthy and happy, my dear! It was wonderful to receive your letter and know you are coming home to us! Kel and I cannot wait to see you and we have such a wonderful surprise! Sassy, we have twins! They were born on Jan. 7th, and are perfect in every way. Matthew Kelster Wallace was born first, and his sister, Sara Catherine Rhea Wallace very soon after. Sara was born with a caul over her face, and the midwife said that some people say that means a child will have the gift of second sight. Kelster was with me every minute during their birth and is such a proud papa. I do not know what I would have done without him there.
Our family is growing! We are going to adopt a six year old Scottish child, Neonea! She is precious, Sassy, and once you meet her, she will steal your heart. She came to us in November when she entered the tavern one night, all alone and tiny. She was separated from her people but is so young, she really can't tell us much about them. She is from Lanark. We met a woman at a Christomas party who may have very well been her mother! She disappeared mysteriously as she appeared. We perhaps could have looked for her but I do not think she really wants to be found. It may be selfish of me, but I just want to adopt her, for Kel and I love her so! We have already begun proceedings with Millicent Reine, Countess of Portsmouth, who is our barrister. She is the best there is when dealing with the law. It puts my mind at ease, to know we have such a sharp legal mind to take care of the adoption for us! It would kill me to ever lose the child.
Osbert has adopted a five year old girl, himself---Alyssum. She was the only child not to have family members found after the occupation ended, and the children went back to their homes in Carlisle. James, Roland and Cuthbert dote on her so, and Os is very happy with a little daughter to spoil.
I can't wait for you to return to Egremont, Sassy! Things are well here in the town. We have a ship now, that the town uses for trading, and also, your brother begins construction on his own ship this week! Yes! Osbert is going to sea! Ha! He already has founded the Egremont Defense Force and now is taking to the waves, I suppose. In any case, I know the town will be well served and protected.
Kelster was made Baron of Ravenglass! We have a castle at Muncaster, now, too, and in the spring, when the twins are a bit older, Kel has plans to take us there. Osbert also has been named Baron of Barrow-in-Furnace. My, my the titles fit them well, although they are the same dear, down to earth fellows they always were!
I was spokesperson on the council, term before last. Your old office suited me very well, Sassy! Perhaps I shall occupy it again, for now that I have had the babes, I am on the list for next term. In any case, I shall have lots to keep me busy!
Egremont is looking into having a special patron saint. Do you remember Atri? She has been put forward to be our saint. There is an investigation into whether any miracles have occured that might be attributed to her. If you knew her, and remember anything of this nature about her, please let us know. She passed on to Jah before I ever even met your brother. Many people thought the world of her, though. I hope anyone with any knowledge of her, and anything that might be thought of as miraculous, will come forward and speak up. I believe the priest said we have to have evidence of two miracles.
Well, my dear, it is a miracle I can continue writing! Ha! It has been so good to write you, though, I almost feel as if I am visiting with you!
Sassy, we can't wait to have you home and we look forward to Perrin returning, too. I have a messenger heading south with correspondence, and he shall look for you in all the inns on his way to Cornwall. I know surely he shall find you in one of them, as you all make your way to Cumberland.
Take care, dear! Your family loves you very much!
Love always,
Hikenai

she has a piece of parchment in her bag and a pen, she starts writing back straight away with tears in her eyes as she has missed so much and will be glad to be home soon

John smiled to see the happiness upon the child's face. Blythe had nodded 'yes' quite enthusiastically, and shot him a smile of pure joy, as the wee lass scooped up the toy squirrels and placed them carefully into a worn pouch she carried with her. As they finished their meal, and Blythe had asked was she ready to see the llama, Neonea had immediately and industriously begun putting on her coat and mittens. She smiled with glee and said,
Quote:

"Yes, I am ready!!"

The adults stood and began bundling themselves up to go out into the cold again. The stables behind Kel's Bells diner was snug and secure, however. The boy who worked there for Lord Wallace, would be especially sorry to see the llama return to the castle with Neonea and Blythe.....for Blythe had promised Hikenai she would bring it back with them, to the stables there, and it would be comfortable in the stall next to Miss Fortune and her foal. Blythe knew that would thrill Neonea, for she knew that the tiny llama with it's soft brown eyes would soon endear itself to any little girl's heart.
--John.blackstone
When they entered the stable, John could not believe his eyes, for he had never seen a llama, either.
Well, would ye look at that!
The ladies crowded close, and Blythe went down on her knees, stretching her hand out to the llama. She smiled and looked back at Neo, trying to gauge her reaction to the little animal.
What do you think of him, Neonea? Shall we take Winston back to the castle with us? You can help take care of him, too, for you do such a good job with Miss Fortune's foal!
Neonea
Upon seeing the llama, my reaction was silent. I carefully examined it, seeing it for the first time, but sooner warmed up to it, and in my tiny bell like voice, let Bylthe and John both know that, "It's so lonely here..."

What do you think of him, Neonea? Shall we take Winston back to the castle with us? You can help take care of him, too, for you do such a good job with Miss Fortune's foal!

By the time I was being asked, I had my arms gently wrapped around the llama's neck, nuzzling into it's soft, yet bristled fur. I peeked out at the two adults watching me and smiled. I loved all Jah's animals, for I saw only good in them. I nodded, and leaned back from the llama.

"I think it would like to come home with us very very much so. Wouldn't you wanta come home with us too?" I smiled big, "It's a real home. You don't gotta go no where else. No more travelling or being alone. We're going to love you a whole lot." I told the Llama.

Aye, it's decided then! He helped the ladies bundle up the little llama in a saddle blanket. The snow continued to cascade from the sky in large lacy wafers of white, settling deeper and deeper over the pristine countryside of Cumbria.

Now, me lassy, you hold tight to Miss Blythe's hand and I will carry Winston for you. I think the sleigh is ready and waiting to take you back to Wallace castle!

Not sure if it was too soon, John hesitated a moment before he added, in a husky whisper, I have had a good time, ladies. Thank you for joining me for our meal, and showing me the llama. He smiled at Blythe, and continued on, Maybe we could do this again sometime soon?
