= [ORP] Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont

Phoebe_
Phoebe glanced up, a woman was calling her name. So much for sitting back in her lovely corner.

"Hi, I am sorry about that. I don't stay in one place for long... I tend to run off and return and run again. I'll try to stay as long as I possibly can this time."

She thought a moment, and fidgeted in her chair. That little girl....

"When I was here last, there was a tiny child. Is she okay? Has she found the person she had lost? That poor, poor little girl...." Her voice trailed off. Not from sadness, just concern. Another thought occurred to her. "Did you say a job?"
--Lorena_
Aye, that's right, a job. Lorena smiled at Phoebe, and looked back at Raven, who was serving whiskey to one of the Brotherhood at the bar.
The bar maid is Raven Bennett. She is the only one working here right now, and I have duties at the castle and Lady Hikenai's apothecary shop, too. Maxine the cook was just saying we need help. And as Lord Kelster and Lady Hikenai aren't in town right now-----and Lady Hik would have found something for you to do had you stayed on, back before Christomas time----I know they would not mind if I took the liberty of hiring you.

Lorena thought the young girl looked hopeful about a job. Perhaps she would stay longer in one place, and put down roots if she had assurance of steady work, and a clean, safe place to stay.

The rooms upstairs are still available, Phoebe, and if you wanted to help Maxine in the kitchen, and Raven with waiting tables, we could pay you daily, plus give you room and board. What do you think? And oh, Neonea, the little girl? Lorena smiled, Lady Hik and Lord Kelster are adopting her. And since you were last here, Lady Hik had twins! A boy and girl....Sara and Matthew!

Lorena hoped Phoebe would agree to stay on. Especially with talk of the unrest in Scotland, and the restructuring of the English counties, there was too much afoot for a young girl alone.

Lady Hikenai would be so happy to come home from the funeral in Scotland and find that you have returned.

Phoebe_
Phoebe thought a moment. Helping out a bit would be fun, maybe.

"Okay, I think I might see what I can do around here. At least for a while." She grinned.

"And congrats to Lady Hik and her new twins. I'm happy that little girl, Neonea you said, has found a home."

Later in the evening, Sir James entered the tavern with Lorena. He carried the box of fresh linen bedsheets, blankets, herbal toiletries, and pillow, that Lorena was bringing to freshen a room upstairs for the young lady who would be staying above the tavern.

Phoebe, he thought to himself, with a chuckle. She had given him the slip back in November! He surprisingly remembered the night Lady Hikenai had asked he sleep down stairs at Kel's Bells, to guard Lorena, Neonea and Phoebe, as they slept upstairs in the quarters above the tavern. He, oddly, had not been so very drunk that night that he'd passed out. The young girl had vanished during the night, and he had never heard a thing, nor had Lorena! The next morning Phoebe was gone.

I wonder how long we will be graced with her presence this time?
He thought, but not without kindness. He had admired the independence of the young girl. But in such a time as this, with all sorts of rapscallions and riff raff traveling about Cumberland, seeking to take advantage of the restructuring of the northern counties, now was not the time for a young girl to be alone on the roads. He was glad Phoebe was at the Bells. Perhaps she would stay for awhile.

--Raven_bennet
She'd waited on Jibbs Graham, of the Brotherhood, finally making the connection between him Carlisle. He was the mayor! Then Lorena had come into the bar, spoken with a young woman and called Raven over, saying to her, This is Phoebe, Raven. She is a young girl the Lord and Lady Wallace have met before, and she is to help you and Maxine. Raven had nodded at the young girl, thinking the girl reminded her a bit of herself, a few years back.
Yes, mum, Raven replied to Lorena. We'll be glad f'r the help, and the young miss will like workin' at the Bells.
Lorena had laughed, Never a dull moment here, Phoebe! You will see!
Then leaving Raven to show Phoebe around the tavern and introduce her to Maxine, the cook, Lorena returned quickly to Wallace Castle to get clean bed linens and some supplies she though Phoebe might like.
I will be back in a bit, until then, if you are hungry Phoebe, go ahead and eat. Just figure the meal is part of your board, so you needn't worry about payment!
Raven nodded at Lorena and gestured to Phoebe.
Come on, let's go meet Maxine!
Phoebe_
Phoebe walked up to the bar and smiled at Raven.

"I ate not too long ago, so I think I'm good for now.... Anything I can do out here? Entertain?" She grinned. "I could startle people by flipping around on the rafters." She thought a moment. "That's a joke, I can't flip at all."
--Raven_bennet
Raven laughed a little, for Phoebe was nice, and seemed friendly. She had the impression Phoebe would make a good worker if given half a chance.

I dinna know about flips, miss, but dancin'.....now there is somethin' you might enjoy, and the customers, too! The musicians will be in later to tune up, and we will make merry tonight!

Raven picked up the box of linens and blankets Lorena had left sitting on the bar and handed it to Phoebe.

If ye want, ye can go on upstairs and pick out a bedroom. Then, once ye be settled in come on back downstairs. The tavern will be filling up soon, and I can show you how to draw up the ale! It will be good for the bartender to have a hand. Ye can draw up the ale for me, and he can concentrate on those customers drinkin' whiskey and the like!

"The room I was in before would be fine." Phoebe thought a moment. "How do you draw up ale?" She was a little nervous. Even though she had worked in various places before, she did a lot of cleaning and not much serving or cooking or anything like that.
--Raven_bennet
Aaaauch, miss, it's easy....just watch now. And Raven picked up two tankards from the shelf, tipping them just so beneath the spigot on the keg, then as she flipped the little lever, the pale, clear ale poured out of the nozzle, filling the tankards. Just as the liquid nearly reached the rim of the tankard, Raven righted it. Neither tankard of ale had too thick a head of foam. There we go!

Raven smiled at Phoebe and then motioned to Jibbs Graham and the other Brotherhood member. They might like the ale.... tell them, it's on the house!

She handed the tankards to Phoebe with a grin.
Don't worry, they are gentlemen, they are.
Phoebe_
Phoebe took the tankards and gulped. She turned towards the men and walked towards them. She stumbled over her feet, but managed to keep both ales in their containers.

"Here... Uh, on the house." Her voice had a slight shake to it. Either of these men could be working for her father. She bobbed her head once and scampered quickly back to Raven. If she didn't stop getting so jumpy at every man that came around, there would be no point in working in a tavern!

She tried to smile a little. "Raven, may I go upstairs and prepare my room, I know it's early, but I would like to have it out of the way. If you don't mind, that is."
--Raven_bennet
It suddenly occurred to Raven that Phoebe might be tired. She didn't know what the girl had been through today, nor even if she had been traveling.

Phoebe said,
Quote:
"Raven, may I go upstairs and prepare my room, I know it's early, but I would like to have it out of the way. If you don't mind, that is."

Aaaaauch! O' course, not! Raven smiled at the girl and nodded toward the stairway. Go on wi' ye, now, and dinna worry about workin' much this evenin'...only if you be feelin' like it! There is plenty o' time for it, tomorrow. You might just want to hang around the tavern tonight and watch, anyway.....Get a feel for it, you know?

Raven's accent was a curious blend of English and Scottish. Her grandfather had been from the highlands, and raised Raven in a tiny village not far from Wigtown. They had moved during Raven's childhood, and come to England so he could work the mines in Carlisle, but he had not lasted long. The black lung set in quickly, and then pneumonia took his life when Raven was not much younger than Phoebe. Raven had been alone ever since.

Raven finished refilling the mugs of ale, and place them back on her tray.
I will take these around now. If there is anythin' else you might have need of, just tell me! She said with a smile.
Since Raven's Sunday afternoon with Forbes, the squire to Lord Kelster, her mood had improved tremendously. She smiled often, when she just thought of the young man and his honest, friendly gaze.
--Forbes
As he walked into the tavern, Forbes eyes immediatly started to search for her. He had brought her a rose that he held behind his back for now. Where was she? There sunday afternoon horse ride and picnic had gone so well he could hardly believe it. Sitting down at a table, still looking to see if he could spot her, he placed the rose beside him where nobody else could see it and waited to be served.

The words had no sooner left Raven's mouth than she turned around, and there he was! Raven looked at Phoebe and smiled again, then picked up the tray of ale, and began to slowly head in Forbes' direction, passing the refills to the gentlemen and collecting their used tankards. Forbes was sitting in at a table off to the side, and she stole glimpses of him on her way across the crowded tavern, she thought maybe he was looking for her!

As she approached his table, she smiled shyly, but tried not to look so fabulously dazzled and pleased. It was very hard not to look happy to see him, though! Her heart had begun to pound the moment she saw him enter the tavern!

Well, now, Forbes! How are you today?!
