= [ORP] Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont

--Forbes
Well, now, Forbes! How are you today?!

As she spoke, Forbes smiled at her. I am doing well today miss Raven and i hope you are well also? His hand reached down to his side and he picked up the rose and offered it to Raven. I brought this for you, i hope you don't think i am being too forward but it's beauty so reminds me of you.

--Raven_bennet
Her eyes met Forbes' eyes. A small smiled played about her lips as she looked at the rose. It was exquisite. Where had he ever found it in winter? So unexpected, it was!

.... it's beauty so reminds me of you.

She tried not to read too much into it-------and yet, she felt herself blush as she wondered if he was saying that, like a rose in winter, she bloomed unexpectedly? Aaaauuuch! I am vain! She thought to herself, embarrassed by her own presumption! It was merely thoughtful of him, just a chivalric gesture, she scolded herself. And if 'tis more than that, he well....he......

Thank you, Forbes, she said shyly, momentarily reviving her manners, as her emotions conflicted within her heart. She reached out and took the rose, with a look of awe on her face.

Where 'er did ye find it? The roses have yet to bud, much less bloom, and we may see more snows, ye know!

Then a horrific thought crossed her face! Witchery! She had discovered that the offspring of that strange, long necked, sheep looking animal she had determined was the familar of that boy they called Corster, had been stabled at Wallace Castle. They called it a Lah Mah.

What if this rose was blooming, in midwinter, through some sort of sorcery worked there? The Wallace's were good folk, Raven had thought, but there was something too perfect about this rose, about Forbes, and about the way she felt when she was around him!

Still, she smiled, for she could not help herself. There was nothing left handed, nor strange about Forbes. He was the nicest young man she had ever met.....She hoped he stayed far away from that Lah Mah!

There is a ship in Egremont port at the moment from Spain. They pack there roses somehow to keep them fresh and be able to sell them in climates where they do not grow at a paticular time of year, they are very expen..... Forbes stopped himself from saying how much this rose cost as he thought he would seem misery to Raven. ... Beautiful are they not?

--Raven_bennet
Raven stared at the rose...it was so fragrant, so perfect.

It's so beautiful! It smells heavenly, Forbes, thank ye! I must put it in water right away!

It had always made her feel uncomfortable before now, when a young man, or anyone actually, gave her compliments. Once she began to develop curves, and take on a womanly beauty, any compliments extended to her were usually apt to make her suspicious, and with good reason. Like last year, when that boy in Carlisle had done his best to court her with pretty words and bits of jewelry he had filched from his mistress! Raven had seen through him immediately, for his ardent looks, and stiff smiles, did little to hide his true intent.

Forbes was different, however. He was sincere in his words.

Suddenly Raven recalled where she was!

What may I be gettin' ye, Forbes? Would you like some ale, some food? There is herring and haggis....but Maxine has some of her fruit pies, fresh from the oven, and maybe something sweet might be what your wantin'?

Raven blushed at her words. But Forbes was the sweetest man she had ever met!

As she talked with Forbes, Raven had forgotten all about Phoebe who was upstairs, putting her things away.

Thinking to himself that he was probably getting in the way of Raven's duties in the tavern, he just smiled at her once more. I think i will try a fruit pie please Raven, i am taking up you're time at the moment so you better get back to you're duties. Thinking this was the last thing he really wanted as he would love her company all day, he knew she had work.

May I have a drink please? Fronz places some coins on the bar.

Raven nodded at Forbes, smiled again at him, and turned as she heard a voice say, May I have a drink please?
Ah, she thought, Brotherhood! She quickly drew up a tankard for the man in the Douglas tartan. More o' the lady Hik's family, I'd warrant, she mused to herself, for she thought she recognized the gentleman from her first night working at the tavern. The place had been packed with Blood Oath Brotherhood members then, and the dancing, music and gaiety lasted long into the night! It was an exciting first night of work for Raven.

She thought of her own sword, safely tucked beneath her mattress in her little room. Soon she would have enough saved for a shield. She would continue eating the extra meat scraps from the Kel's Bells kitchen, along with the ample meals her employment afforded her. She grew stronger and more muscular by the day, although her figure was feminine and pleasing. One day, though, should England call, she would be ready. And she would be trained with her sword by then, of that there was no doubt in her mind.

Here ye are, sirrah!
She said with a firm nod, as she gave Fronz his drink. Then she nodded at Forbes and with a smile, and a softer voice, she whispered, And I will be right back with your pie, Forbes. She turned and headed for the kitchen, and looked to the stairway, wondering if Phoebe would come back downstairs.

Fronz.douglas
Looking at the pretty lass who pulled his beer alows Fronz to drift off for a moment from all around him and dwell on what like would be like to have a lass such as this in his life. That once the keep is finished they could move in and settle down and enjoy life and all its treasurers together. Soon enough the brew is before him and he is back in the present. Passing over 3 extra coins for her safe keeping, Thank you young Lass. You are a credit to this fine hall.

Phoebe came back down the steps and into the tavern. Her room was set, and she was ready to do at least something. Her eyes wandered around the tavern a moment.

"Raven, is there anything I could do?"

Fronz said,
Quote:

As Fronz Douglas passed Raven a tip, and complimented her on her work, Raven once more felt a vague uneasiness at compliments. But the earlier attention, and sincere appreciation from Forbes, now seemed to make it easier to accept the kind words from others. She now smiled at Fronz, as she shrugged off her self consciousness, and nodded her head as she pocketed the coins.

Pleased to have met your approval, sirrah! Just be calling me should you need a refill there!

Phoebe said,

Raven smiled at Phoebe upon her return. The girl had appeared just as Raven had come from the back with the pie for Forbes, and Phoebe was glancing around the tavern, with a look upon her face that Raven thought might be apprehension, but might only be a mixture of uncertainty and excitement. 'Twas true the girl was young, and had no experience in taverns, working at them, or spending a great deal of time in them. Raven was hesitant to just thrust the girl out, into waiting on the customers immediately, not until Phoebe had the chance to get to know some of them. Then the girl would be more relaxed, more at home, Raven thought to herself.

Ah, Phoebe, let me take this pie to Forbes, then ye and I will draw up more ale, and I will see if ye can do so without fillin' the tankards half full o' foam! Tis a trick to that, there is!

--Sir.james.bland
Seemed easy enough to pick up Miss Lorena from the Bells. The smell of the ale hit him in the face when he entered, and the clink of the tankards sounded pleasing. The voices of customers, their laughter, the loud exclamations, tempted him, and the music lended itself to the irresistible pull of the atmosphere.

Sir James groaned. His frown found itself upon his face two seconds later as he scouted about for Lorena Lanius. Seeing her somewhat engrossed in conversation with Raven, Sir James hesitated, stood at the entrance, and shuffled from one foot to the other.

Jah's teeth and bones! He wanted a drink!

He ran his hand over the back of his head, feeling the thick, coarse, white hair and fell further into a despondency that had not been with him when he had left Wallace Castle. At that point in time, so short awhile ago, he had looked forward to seeing Lorena, and escorting her home. Now, he stood in the doorway of the tavern wanting nothing more than a shot of Scotch, and ale to chase it with!

Morning ale head, be damned, he thought grumpily. I want a drink!
Kelster
After being away for a while, with a wedding and a funeral to go too, Kelster was so glad to be back behind the bar of his tavern. It had always been the conversation that had drawn him into being a tavern owner after starting out as a barkeep in many differant taverns, he had always dreamed of owning one himself.

Pouring himself and ale, he started to drink it down slowly
. Ahhhhh, best ale in all the kingdoms. Now, see what today brings.

I am very seasick, I think to myself, and hold my hand to my head, wipe the dampness from my brow, and try to breathe deeply of the fresh air. It smells of the sea and I am still sick. Humid warmth from the sun, the air flowing against my cheek, makes me feel a little better. Still the world turns about me and I get off the ship. Soon the walk to the tavern clears my head.

Egremont. This town is the last I will see in England before I sail on to Scotland. Do I really want to sail on? Already my stomach churns with seasickness while I think of the weeks spent at sea.

The tavern is called Kel's Bells and I go in. It is very bright and cheerful. The girls working here look happy. The man at the bar looks kind. I go up and sit down, and place my coin on the counter, when the man looks up.

"May I please have ale? I am hungry, too. Is there food here?"

Kelster

Putting down his ale, Kelster welcomes the new arrival to the town of Egremont. Hello, welcome to Kels Bellst tavern and to Egremont.I am the owner of this tavern, Kelster Wallace. Putting his hand over the bar and offering it to the newcomer to shake, he smiles at her. Pleased to see you in our fare town. Pouring her a large mug of ale, he places it before her. The first one is always on the house in my tavern for newcomers to this town. Now food, we have bread, pies and of course fish on the menu today. what would you like?

Thank you very much. I accepted the ale from him, and his blue eyes were friendly and direct. He placed the mug of ale on the counter and I immediately took it up and sipped it. My thirst at last slaked, I listened as he told of the food the tavern served. Fish. Oh no! When the tavern owner suggested fish I felt my stomach churn with the thought of one bite more of sea food. Every day I had eaten shrimp, lobster, crab legs, and every conceivable sea creature from Dartmouth to Egremont, and I was nearly nauseous with the thought of it. Do you have----it is called---Shepherd's Pie? A meat pie. And some bread would be nice. I folded my cape and placed it next to me. Is there an inn here in Egremont?
