= [ORP] Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont

Ecrisian
Lucy looked like she still wanted to spend their time in the tavern, but they still have lots to do the next day. He nodded and hugged his spouse "Thank you for understanding, dear".

Lady Hikenai mentioned different options and establishments to accommodate them for the evening. He thanked her "Mrs. Hikenai, I am thankful for welcoming us here in your tavern. It looks like Lucy enjoyed it here, and so do I. She may even prolong her stay here in England!" he chuckled.

He chose not to disturb the couple further, and just planned to stay on an another Inn.
While assisting her wife to get up and ready their things for leaving, he shook the hands of the couple and thanked them once again. "We will surely be back here in your tavern, maybe when we visit the northern England again. It is really nice to meet you" he nodded farewell and helped Lucy to the exit.

Funny how a life comes undone. At first one might not notice...just a lack of a response here, or there, a lessening of interest, perhaps averted eyes, and an expression of preoccupation upon one's face. It might be mistaken for a momentary phase, just a refocusing on other things, a time of distancing to regroup, redirect, restore...and then, in the turning away, everything once taken for eternal, known, familiar, beloved, dissolves, and is swept away. And the momentum increases, and one sees bits of a life hurling by, fading and withering, and nothing can be done to stop the inevitable. The energy required to stop it, to stall it, to somehow steer life back into some semblance of a vital familiarity, has faded. A tired acceptance, a muddled resignation, plaintive cry. Nothing felt matters. Nothing holds up.

On this particular day, Hikenai opened the door to Kel's Bells in Egremont, and sighed. The Queen was in Westmorland. On another day, in another time, Hikenai might have felt excitement, but today she only felt fatigue. She stood behind the bar, and looked about at the empty tavern. Before long, it would fill with customers, the happy chatter of the noon day crowd, later in the day, the low rumble of the ale seekers. She sighed again, and looked at the door, wondering who might be first to enter.

Father Prof! Please come and take a seat! I am so glad to see you!

Hikenai rushed out from behind the bar, glad to see the priest's face. It had been too long since she and Father Prof had shared an ale.

Come on in!

The priest gladly obliged the invitation and entered the tavern.

"Hello Hiky, 'sup? "

Father Prof, have you just come from retreat? Why----the Queen, Her Majesty, herself, has come to Westmorland, to meet with our citizens, and discuss that letter---that missive full of lies our Countess Snowlynx received----along with other concerns we in Westmorland might have! Surely you heard about that letter, for it was much talked about in the Westmorland Inn....and in London, as well, from what I gathered when I was in the House of Lords...... Hikenai drew up two ales, and placed one in front of the young priest.
I am so glad Her Majesty has chosen to come, but very sorry it is during a time of mourning for her. The subject matter could be most troubling but i know, the Queen, her representatives and our Westmorland councilors, and townspeople will handle the subject quite sensitively, and with the proper decorum, I expect. All the talk of possible independence is just that, I think, talk..... Hikeani giggled as an unexpected revelation came upon her. It completely dispelled her earlier depression. Father, do you know the image often portrayed of those in the north, how we have been accused in the past, of supposedly being quick to argue and bicker, speak of war, harass, insult.....Well, dear Father Prof, imagine my surprise when recently I visited the House of Lords for the first time! Hikenai widened her eyes at the priest, remembering raised voices, rude allegations, wild accusations...behavior from so many, from across all of England, whom she had expected to behave differently. It was amazing how some of the lords and ladies, some our appointed leaders, thought Westmorlanders were surely unable to have seen through that letter. Worse, some thought our Countess was using the letter to push for war! The Countess's decision to follow the council's policy of transparency, and accountability, in revealing the letter to the people of Westmorland was even called into question by a few! Some held such strong assumptions of what Westmorland might supposedly do.....it was sad to hear, Father. Um....maybe you might go to the talks with the Queen? It is presently taking place in the Westmorland Inn.

As he listened to his wife expalin the current situation in Westmorland, Kelster poured himself a very, very large whisky. He himself had decided to take a short break from politics as he was feeling very drained of late. It was time to start having a little fun he had thought to himself.

Would you like a drink Hik? I am in need of a few myself and it is time we let our hair down for a while, rest, relax and have some fun.

Darling, you are right! Please, please pour me a shot of whiskey as well! Hikenai kissed Kelster's cheek, gently stroked his upper arm, and smiled reasuringly at her husband. His health and well being, and that of the children, was all that really mattered to her. The muscle beneath the softness of his shirt seemed tense, and as she examined his face, he did appear tired to her.

She turned back to the priest, and inquired if he might like a shot of whiskey also. It's Kel's Bells finest, Father Prof!
As she tilted her head back, the smooth amber liquid passed easily down her throat, as it warmed her and caused a quick inhalation of her breath.

We met your brother, Ecris, Prof! He and his lovely wife Lucrezia were just in the tavern last week! Imagine my surprise when I realized our newest customer was your brother! I could tell Ecris is very proud of you, Prof. I do hope they return to visit us!

"Lady Hik, I can see your dilemma.." he sipped.. "Misunderstanding is just common in politics and in any known communication that has the possibility to be misunderstood. Just lengthen your patience and try to understand them, dont jump on conclusions..even though their true intention is quite unpleasant, try to see through it and seek the truth... for the lack of understanding is the primary cause of misunderstanding..of course" he chuckled. "As St. Francis once said..'It is better to understand than to be understood'. " Sloth paused when he heard himself giving a sermon again on random places and instances... he grinned.

"I am no man in position to criticize our 'appointed' leaders, but it is everyone's moral obligation to ensure the welfare of his neighbor.. and if these circumstances leads to strife and bitter feelings towards each and everyone of us, i think it is rightful to make these evil-doers....who ever they are.... 'understand' what peace and unity means, by all means necessary" he laughed.

"I doubt that this commotion will result on greater outcomes...like pointless wars and such. for i really believe on our countymen. Westmorland is a strong place.. this mere problem will not even scratch our faith on each other. May Jah grant them wisdom and fill their hearts with peace and patience." he sipped again his ale.

It's Kel's Bells finest, Father Prof!

he obliged and took a shot for himself.

We met your brother, Ecris, Prof! He and his lovely wife Lucrezia were just in the tavern last week! Imagine my surprise when I realized our newest customer was your brother! I could tell Ecris is very proud of you, Prof. I do hope they return to visit us!

the priest hide his giggle when he heard that.

"I see" finally let gone of his laughter.. "He is quite an..er... eccentric man, my brother" he put the glass on the table.. "As for my sis-in-law, i havnt got the chance to meet her.. for i was studying in Rome when they got married..and shooo... she left for Ireland... but i do look forward to meet them..I will invite both of them to visit us again here."

he smiled and viewed the calm sea outside.

A somewhat travel-worn and battered letter arrives at Kel's Bells Tavern addressed to the Lady Hikenai Wallace.

Lady Hikenai Wallace
Kel's Bells Tavern
Egremont

Dear Lady Hikenai,

It has been some time since I have put quill to parchment to write to you, I hope you accept my deepest apologies for the delay. I am currently in London but am leaving tonight to rejoin my family at home. While here, I had the pleasure of briefly crossing paths with your husband and asked him to convey to you my fond remembrance and best wishes.

My husband and I have just returned from a long journey to Scotland. The voyage there was cursed by lazy winds and what should have taken a week at most was tripled. We were very glad to set our feet onto dry land even if our welcome was not the most pleasant. We found the Scottish people to be less than accommodating and lacking civility for the most part. It was with great relief when the object of our trip, our ship, was completed and we could finally make our way back home. One bright spot was that my husband and I took the opportunity to renew our vows and blessings were bestowed on our marriage.

Whether the result of the long, tedious journey on seas or the honeymoon turn of the trip, I find myself once again with child. I am feeling well, the morning illness has thankfully about passed. I still have the herbs you so kindly sent to me through your sister-in-law (please give her my thanks for this, I would personally write to express them but have no address for her) but I am hesitant to use them as I don't know the effect they may have on my unborn child. I have not been plagued by my old symptoms though.

This trip to London shall be my last for quite a while as when I return home I shall happily remain with my family at least until after the birth. There are so many things that need tending to that I shall be quite busy. We have hired a tutor for our eldest son and invited the townspeople to take advantage for their children as well. Organizing this small school will keep me well occupied and is something I am looking forward to.

My apologies for the length of this letter. I had not realized how lax in my correspondence with you I had been until I took quill in hand to recount my recent adventures. I hope the length has not strained your time, nor your patient. I do enjoy our correspondence and hope to hear from you soon.

With warmest regards,

I came howling through the tavern, nothing like I had months ago. When I first came here, I was skin and bones, dirty and blistered, dehydrated and malnourished. Now when I bounded in, my blond curls were straw blond, darkening with age but clean and shining, they bounced with each step I took. My almond shaped summer-sky eyes were wide under the curtains of black lash, glittering with joy and excitement, fear and annoyance, all that the same time. My heart shaped face was red from running, and my eye-lit white cotton dress was wrinkled, but I'd managed to keep it clean so far. It hung to my knobby knees were skinned, but from play, rather than bad living, and each injury was tenderly cared for. My shoes clacked on the floor, dirty from the ground outside, but each beat against the floor was heavy. My fists were clenched as I ran, smudged with dirt.

Behind me, with a ball of mud in his hands, came James. The blond headed boy was on my heels, angry with a face caked with mud. He was mad, but somewhere he was smiling with the chase he had taken to when I ran the instant I tossed the first sludge of mud. Our chase commenced, around the tables, under the tables, behind the bar, and through the kitchen, where Blythe yelped and laughed as we ran around her, and then ran out the back door...

I jumped down from the wagon, as Sir James pulled it to a stop. My mum had already gone on to the apothecary shop, and Sir James was taking me with him, on his errands. The first stop was at Kel's Bells tavern, where he was to pick up two kegs from the bar to take to a wedding Lord Kel and Lady Hik were going to this weekend.

Suddenly the back door to the bar flew open and out ran Neonea with James hot on her heels!

Neonea! I squealed out, seeing my friend being chased by James who clutched a mud clod in his hand! I grinned at Sir James, and ran off right behind those two, as they jumped the unplanted furrows of the kitchen garden, and headed for the tavern stables.

When Hikenai entered the bar, Blythe grinned.
Neonea has run out back, with James, Lady Hik. She is in rare form today! Blythe laughed and pointed to the counter. This letter came for you, m'lady!
Thank you, Blythe! Hikenai picked it up, delighted to see the missive was from her friend, Liza Wolf. Sitting down at the bar, Hikenai broke the seal and smiled warmly as she read her letter.

James was on my heels when I heard my name chirped out of the mouth of Evelyn. I stopped short to look at the blonde girl bouncing our way, stopped so short that James slammed into the back of me, and his handful of mud backfired into his own face as we both tumbled to the ground.

My eyes grew wide as I rolled over and looked at him, his face turned red, under all the brown, and he growled in his frustration. I leaped to my feet, and roared into laughter. I had a high pitched bell like chirp of a laugh that rung with happiness, as if no pain had ever forced itself it into my life.

I grasped Evelyn's hand as James jumped to his feet,

"Come on!" I squealed as I tugged her to follow me in another chase, as James held out his arms, he was soaked with mud I had plastered him before, and that he had ironically plastered against himself.

Let's go! I screamed out, as James staggered toward us, his arms outstretched, looking like a golem! I had heard of them before! Sir James Bland had whispered to me mum that they were all over Ireland!
It had frightened me a little, for with more ships docking in Egremont's port, I was scared one might have stowed away on board, but so far, James was the only 'mud man' I had ever seen!

Neonea had grabbed my hand, and we flew into the stables, ran straight for the steps to the loft and began climbing.

Hurry, hurry! He is gaining on us!
I exclaimed, laughing every step of the way. It briefly shot through my mind, that mum had told me Neonea would be attending the wedding of Lady Ghostwriter, and Lord Seamus, Baron of Corby....I thought that was tomorrow. So Neonea would have plenty of time to soak in the tub and Wallace castle, and wash away all traces of the mud.
