= [ORP] Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont

Hikenai
Hikenai finished writing a response to Liza Wolf's letter and turned to Raven.

May I please have some chilled milk? And Raven, when you are done here, would you see where Neonea and James got off to? I expect they went to the stables.

The midmorning was warm with the sun of late spring, and Blythe Williams had accompanied Hikenai and the children into town. She sat across from Hikenai, checking over a list of matters to be tended to at the small manor at Hawkshead.

M'lady, Blythe said, I think probably there has already been one cutting of hay, and the tenants have gotten the seed in the ground. The produce from the winter gardens has probably stood them in good stead. With all the corn and wheat you are taking them, they will be well situated until harvest! No one shall go hungry!

As she smiled and sipped her milk, Hikenai wondered about the small country barony she had been given title to. Kelster and I will go to visit Hawkshead and Ravenglass before long, Blythe, and I look forward to it. There is Muncaster Castle to set in order, and the small manor house at Hawkshead, too. Hikenai suddenly shivered. Muncaster is reputed to be haunted, and remembering some of the stories I have heard, puts me a little on edge. We shall have the children with us when we visit....surely those were only stories, only legends I have heard about Ravenglass....and about Muncaster castle.....

Hikenai shrugged, it was silly of her to be superstitious she thought! She was a grown woman, with children, In any case, first things first! And tomorrow Lady Ghostwriter marries the Baron of Corby....so I need to collect Neonea and get her home to the bath tub!

Neonea
Every step was long, even for my short legs, I was side by side with my new friend, laughing with a wide smile on my face as we headed into the stables. The smell of the stables hit my face, refreshing instead of repulsing. The smell of hay, and animal lingered in the air as we climbed into the loft, James scowling and chasing us.

Hiding in the loft, I peeked over the edge, traces of the hay billowing down to the floor beneath us. There was James, looking for us. He had been on our tail, but not close enough to see us. I stifled my giggles under my dirty hands, my eyes shining with excitement as I looked down at him, scratching his caked hair, fussing with his hands that came to his hips. Reminded me of an old woman. I grinned larger, but had no pranks up my sleeves thus far.

I found myself parched, and I looked at Evelyn, and then back to James, a glass of fresh milk as an image floating in my mind. I wondered if throwing the game would be worth it.

It didn't matter, soon Blythe was out, calling for us. James turned and Blythe stammered in her shock, he explained what I had done, and she rushed him into the tavern while she made her way to the stable. She entered, and unlike James who could not find us so easily, found us right away. She set her hands on her hips in a stern fashion, her eyes telling us to come down, and her lips curling into the hint of a smile.

I sighed and looked at Evelyn, smiling still and shrugging my slender shoulders to my ears before climbing down the ladder. Blythe examined us, and then lead us back to the tavern, chuckling.

Ah, Neonea, tomorrow you are going to the wedding of Lady Ghostwriter and the Baron of Corby, Seamus Rood!
Blythe stood with her hands on her hips, trying to maintain a stern expression, but it was difficult. Blythe was so happy to see Neonea enjoy herself again, after the upset with Cyrizus, and his return, that she could not scold the little one about anything. And, there was no harm in mud pies, mud fights, or little ones scampering to the top of the stable loft. Blythe was happy to see Lady Hikenai allowed to Neonea to be a child, and did not insist she be as a little adult.

Blythe steered both girls back to the tavern. Evelyn's face was shining with pleasure, as well. She was happy to have a friend her age at last, Blythe knew, and she was quite fortunate to have Neo for that friend, for Lady Hikenai would do as much as she could for Lorena Lanius's daughter, and afford her as much opportunity as she could, to see Evelyn advance in life.

Now girls, how about a glass of milk, and some of Maxine's banana nut bread?

I nodded as I found a place to seat, my arm stretching over and patting the area to the other side of me, patting the table to invite Evelyn up next to me. I grinned at her and then looked at Blythe, and my mama, dipping my mud crusted hands under the table. James sat at the other side of us, still crusted in mud, and glaring at us.

I happily plopped down next to Neonea. I could hardly look at James! His eyebrows were scrunched together tightly over his nose and reminded me of a fat, red catapillar! I took a drink of milk just as that thought crossed my mind, and I nearly choked on it, as I tried not to laugh!

It was in that moment of silence, as Neonea, James and I ate the nut bread and drank our milk, that I overheard Lady Hik and Blythe whispering with my mum....

Ah Lady Hikenai, d'you think there is any stock in those tales of hearing footsteps, seeing the door open of its own accord, hearing a crying child, or a singing woman? Blythe had a worried look on her face, but Lady Hik was smiling. And feeling something patting on you! Or a change in temperature! They giggled, but still, their whispered voices were serious, and I shot a look at Neo, to see if she was hearing what I was hearing. Blythe went on, But people having chest pains while they are there, and even being inexplicably thrown from the bed!

If I was feeling myself patted, Lady Hikenai answered Blythe, I would think it was the Baron, and that should be enough to make me experience a change of temperature! The ladies really giggled at that. It reminded me of when it was hot at my house, and I could not sleep. Sometimes mum would pat me until I dozed off! I guess Lady Hik got hot, too! I took a big bite of the nut bread, and then I heard Lady Hikenai whisper, Chest pains, and even being tossed out of the bed....perhaps it is only some physical illness having caused someone to be in pain, and leap from the bed....not a haunting at Muncaster Castle, at all.

A haunting, I thought in horror, A haunting at Muncaster Castle?

I was worried then, for I knew I heard my mum say that Lord Kelster had been given the title to the land at Ravenglass, and that included Muncaster Castle! Surely they would not take Neonea to a ....haunted castle?

I glanced up a moment and realized what was being conveyed. There was a moment that my face twisted into a look that was hard to read, and it went away as fast as it had came. I listened to the back and forth talk, and sipped my milk silently as I let myself think about what was being said.

I shrugged my slender shoulders to my ears and dropped them.

"Ghosts aren't so bad. O'im not afraid." I said, taking a sip of my milk and not looking up.

Neonea, are you nearly finished with your milk and nut bread?

Hikenai had quickly changed the subject, when she realized their voices had carried, and the children were overhearing the talk of ghostly happenings at Muncaster castle. She was not especially superstitious, but she had to admit to herself, that just the talk of the castle's past, had given her a bit of a creepy feeling. The thought crossed her mind, that she would assign Blythe the job of learning all she could about the various legends surrounding the barony at Ravenglass....and Hikenai had a keen interest in history. She knew the oldest section of the castle dated back to the time of the Roman occupation! It would be interesting to hear what Blythe might discover. But for now, she had a wedding to attend to!

Evelyn, after the wedding tomorrow, maybe you and Neonea can get together again. I am sorry to take her away now, but we have to have our final fittings for the dresses we shall wear tomorrow. Mrs. Frobisher the dressmaker is waiting for us, I think!

Hikenai grinned at her young nephew and sighed. James, I should take you back with us, for you do need a bath, too! But Osbert expects to find you here, and I am sure he will be along directly. Raven will keep an eye on you, and I want you to listen, and mind her, young man!

Hikenai gave James a long stern look, that ended with a softening of her expression. James was a handful, and since Neonea had come to the castle, Hik thought that the boy had become more daring in his exploits, as he seemed determined to test his limits, and impress his young cousin!

I nodded,

"Yes, I'm done."

I told Hikenai just before I finished the last of my milk. I was ready to go get ready, and I grinned at Evelyn.

"See you later?"

Yes! I answered Neonea at once.

Maybe even after tomorrow's wedding, the glorious mud would still be lying in the furrows of the kitchen garden, in back of the Bells. We could really give James what for, then! Just thinking about it took my mind off the talk of ghosts, and a haunted castle. Besides, it would be weeks before Neonea went on the trip with her mama and papa, into the country south of Egremont, along the River Esk. Until then, we could play almost everyday, and have a fine time!

I hope I see you tomorrow, after the fine wedding! Have fun!

Hikenai
The dawn had come with still no sign of Cyrizus......Neonea's birth father. Hikenai arrived to work at Kel's Bells a bit stiff from having danced the afternoon away the day before, at the wedding reception of Ghostwriter and Seamus Rood. Their friends' happy wedding ceremony had taken Hik's mind off the man who had appeared, and attempted to abduct Neonea, only a few short days ago....but now, as she returned to do inventory at the Bells, her thoughts turned once more to the man whom she dreaded seeing again. She was still incredulous that he had managed to escape the Wallace castle guards.

Egremont was teeming with visitors and new residents now, so Hikenai was ever vigilant at the Bells, hoping to hear word about the man she felt posed a threat to her child. Since she and Kelster had adopted Neonea, this was exactly the scenario she feared most.

Still, she flipped the sign in the window of the Bells, from 'closed' to 'open", and wondered to herself, who might be the first customers of the day?

The cloaked figure of a man arrived in Egremont that morning, his weathered face well hidden behind his hood. He slowly led his horse through the town's streets, until he saw a signpost saying "Kel's Bells Tavern". "So, here it is.", he thought to himself and dismounted his horse. Keeping its reins in his hands, he led it to the nearest stable and then he made his way back towards the tavern. He stopped right before the tavern's door. He pulled the silver pendant from under his shirt and looked at it briefly. His mind filled with thoughts. He took a deep breath, while letting the pendant slip from his hand and sway in the air, since it was still hanging from his neck, and entered the building quietly, trying not to draw too much attention upon himself, believing that the tavern was already busy even if it was so early in the morning.

Raven Bennett, played by Hikenai
The customers had come in a few at a time, giving her the chance to help Maxine in the kitchen. Lady Hikenai sat at the table in the corner, steadily pouring over the columns of figures, that only looked like chicken scratches to Raven. I do wish I could've la'rned a bit o' readin' and cypherin'.....
she thought enviously. Forbes was smart! Lord Kelster's young scribe had assured Raven she was quick enough to learn to read and figure numbers, but Raven was not so sure. The symbols on parchments were a mystery to her, and as she reflected on what she did know----the way her name looked written down, and how far she could count before the numbers seemed to run together into an unimaginable amount, her attention shifted to the cloaked man who had entered the tavern.

G' marnin' to ye, sirrah! M'oight I bring ye an ale or a bite t' eat?

"Good morning.", he replied with a nod of his head, as if he were talking to no one in particular. "Ugh, stop being so rude and secretive.", he thought, as he wrinkled his face slightly in disgust of himself. "Yes, an ale will be fine, lass.", he added and pulled his hood back, letting a soft smile appear on his face, while making his way towards an empty table to have a seat, "And if the cooks are already working, I don't mind eating something as well." He had spent a long time on the road and he could hear his stomach complain. Actually, he was wondering if others could hear it too. "Otherwise, an ale alone will be fine.", he concluded and sat down at the table of his choosing.

Hikenai had been daydreaming for a second. She hadn't the head for figures today, and had stopped adding the receipts, and started wondering about Neonea's father again, and where he could have possibly gotten off to. Suddenly, a vaguely familiar voice snapped her back to the present.
Conrad said,
Quote:
"And if the cooks are already working, I don't mind eating something as well.........Otherwise, an ale alone will be fine.

She rose from the chair and turned in the direction of the customer who was speaking to Raven, and Hikenai's mouth dropped in surprise.
It was Conrad! Their cousin Conrad whom they had met this past winter during the sad occasion of the funeral for Brother Chris, their Wallace clan chieftain. Hikenai placed her quill on the table, and smoothed her hands against her apron as she approached Cousin Conrad.
I thought I recognized your voice! Cousin Conrad! 'Tis a pleasure to see you here in Egremont!

His rear had barely touched the chair when he heard the voice of his cousin Hikenai speak to him. He rose again to greet her properly. "The pleasure is all mine, cousin." , he responded with a nod of his head and a soft, but somewhat silly at the same time, grin on his face. He had planned to adress her by her name, but the circumstances under which they had met, during brother Chris's funeral, hadn't helped him remember names. He had met way too many people that sad day to remember them all. But now, he had plenty of time to meet them all properly and under much better circumstances.

"I guess...", he added hesitatingly, since Hikenai appeared somewhat distracted to him, "you didn't expect to see me here, so far away from Scotland."
