= [ORP] Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont

Hikenai
Conrad said,
Quote:
"I guess...you didn't expect to see me here, so far away from Scotland."

It is a most pleasant surprise, let me assure you! Hikenai laughed, and patted the table for him to be seated. She lowered herself into a chair to sit across from him, and again smiled at him, as she clasped her hands on the table top. Conrad appeared tired from the road, and she nodded at Raven to hurry with food and drink.
Kelster will arrive shortly, and he will be as glad you are here, as I am, cousin! I hope you have come to Egremont to visit us, and stay a good long while!

He returned to his seat and smiled at his cousin. "I hadn't planned this, to be honest.", he said frankly, "I'm on my usual herb gathering mission on behalf of the healers of Wigtown, Galloway, and since I was so close to Egremont, I decided to pay a visit." He nodded hearing Hikenai mention Kelster's name. "Kelster, Kelster...", he thought to himself, "Oh yes, one of the Wallaces I met at the Chief's funeral... Doh, silly me... This very tavern was named after him. He is the owner. And that must be his wife Hikenai then. And they also had a little girl at the funeral with them called Neo... something..." He smiled at her, actually being happy about himself making progress in remembering people and their names.

"Yes", he added after a moment or two of silence, "I'm thinking about spending some time here and getting some rest, before heading out again. I will be glad to meet your husband again too, cousin Hikenai, exactly as I'm glad to see you too again." Only the gods he believed in knew how tired he was, how hard that journey all over the British Isles to gather herbs was for him and how much he needed some rest. "You have a nice place here.", he commented, while having a look around the tavern.

Walking into the tavern, spotting Hik talking to a seated man, Kelster walked to the bar and got ready for another day at Kels Bells tavern. Turning to see who his wife was talking too, he seemed to recognize the man's face. Seeing the Wallace tartan of his kilt, he then remembered him from Brother Chris's funeral. Instantly walking over to them both, he held out his hand to shake.

How are you cousin? What are you doing in Egremont? Thinking that his words may not have sounded welcoming, he smiled at his cousin. Sorry, I mean I am so happy to see you here. Do you have anywhere to stay while you are in town? Plenty of room at Wallace castle cousin, It is our family home in England.

He hadn't finished his last sentence when a man approached him and extended his hand to him. He immediately rose from his seat -- it seems it wasn't meant for him to remain seated for long that day -- and, recognising his cousin Kelster in the man's face, he gave him a handshake. "I'm as good as any wandering healer can be.", he replied. His eyes widened a little when he heard Kelster ask: "What are you doing in Egremont?", but he grinned, knowing that Kelster didn't mean to question him or anything. He could understand that his cousins couldn't even guess that he would ever come for a visit, let alone expect him to be in Egremont to see them. "I'm glad to see you again too, cousin Kelster.", he simply said.

When he was asked about whether he had a place to stay in or not, he just smiled and added:
"You needn't worry about my lodging. There are lots of abandoned buildings all the way from Wigtown to the south of England. I will be fine." He had spent a long time in the wild, way too long a time, to worry about where to stay for the night. He was very familiar with sleeping out in the open and spending a night in a castle just wasn't his thing. It was that moment though when he realised that it wasn't the first time someone mentioned the Wallace Castle in England to him.

He got lost for a moment in his thoughts. He remembered how his sister had insisted in visiting their cousins in the castle, back when they had been reuinited down in Chard. He also remembered how she had complained to him about not visiting the castle, when they met again in Wigtown a few months later. And how much she wanted to introduce him to the clan. He just let a soft sigh, as he returned to the present, and smiled at both his cousins.

"It's been a while since we last met.", he continued. "And what a sad time it was...", he thought before adding: "How have you been?"

I carefully brought over the ale in large tankards, and served the drink first, then returned to the kitchen for the food. I quickly placed the large platters of roasted chicken, baked fish, and succulent lamb before the Baron and the guest. Then, the bowls of roasted vegetables, and the bread basket, was placed next to Lady Hikenai, and the pot of butter passed to her. I tried not to ease drop, averting my eyes, but I heard the guest mention Wigtown!

Auuugch, I thought, nooooo Lord Kel and Lady Hik would never hear of it! They would insist he come to th' castle!

Thank you, Raven. Tell Maxine this looks delicious, Lady Hikenai said, as I nodded at her, and returned to the bar.

Hikenai listened to Kel and Conrad greet each other, as Raven arrived with the ale, then went to the kitchen for the food. She was happy that Maxine had prepared such a variety of fish, chicken, and lamb.

Conrad said,

Delighted to hear Conrad identify himself as a healer, when Kelster asked how he fared, and if he had made arrangements in Egremont, Hikenai knew her husband would insist their cousin allow them to extend their hospitality to him, while he was in Egremont gathering the herbs he sought. Perhaps Conrad would share his knowledge with her. She was always anxious to learn more about the herbs that promoted health and brought about healing. It would give her Kelster great pleasure to have Cousin Conrad come to the castle.
Conrad said,
Quote:

How have you been?"

Conrad, we have been well....as have our children, Neonea, Matthew and Sara. You met Neonea our six year old, at the funeral........Aye, it was a sad time...when Brother Chris died....Our trip was rushed, and fraught with tension, because of the unrest in Scotland..... Neonea is originally from Lanark.

Hikenai took a sip of ale, not wishing to dwell on the anxiety she felt because of Cyrizus, Neo's birth father, and his disappearance. She looked encouragingly at Conrad....We would very much like to have you with us at the castle. Surely would allow us to offer you our hospitality, and be our guest! It would give me great satisfaction, as well, if you would come to the apothecary shop, and allow me to share some of the herbs I have there with you.

His eyes widened a little when he realised it was a feast that he was about to have, rather than a breakfast, considering the time of the day, or any other meal. He had been so used in living frugally that, in his eyes, that meal that was before him equalled to a feast of royal proportions. "Control yourself.", he thought to himself, believing that everyone could see how hungry he was. He simply nodded and smiled, hearing that they were all well. "Oh yes", he thought, "Neonea is the little girl who called me a liar in front of everyone at the funeral... Can't blame her though..."

"Yes", he replied with another nod, "I do remember young lady Neonea." He kept nodding from time to time, as he paid close attention to what Hikenai was saying to him, but the mention of Lanark made his hairs perk up for a moment. "Lanark you say? I have roots in Lanark. My grandfather was born there too." Then, Hikenai mentioned the castle again. He didn't know how to react. If he refused, he would look ungrateful and his cousins might feel offended by him refusing their hospitality. If he accepted though, he would feel rather uncomfortable living in a castle. But on the other hand, the tavern wasn't the best place for him to reveal the true reasons behind him coming to Egremont, since he wasn't exactly passing by and suddenly decided to pay them a visit. The castle might be a better place for that.

"I will gladly come for a visit", he finally said and added hesitatingly: "but I would prefer to return to my lodging for the night. It will be better this way." He didn't want to turn their offer down completely, but he hoped they would understand why he prefered to live that way. The mention of an apothecary shop, run by Hikenai herself, gave him new hope. "That might speed things up and allow me to return to Wigtown sooner than I originally planned.", he thought, "I might be able to establish a route between here and Wigtown's infirmary, but... I shouldn't get ahead of myself."

"That's very interesting.", he grinned, "I never thought you were so interested in herbs and their use. But then again, funerals aren't the best means to meet people and learn about their interests. I would really love to visit the apothecary shop."

Upon the utterance of those words, Hikenai felt her face flush a little. Neonea had confronted Conrad in a bold way at the funeral, insisting more than once that Conrad, a man whom the child had just met, was lying! He had been telling them about cousin Jasmine Silver Wolf's absence from the funeral....and Neonea had contradicted him in his explanation of her absence and insisted he was lying! It had made for a most tense moment, there in the church.... Hikenai smiled at her husband, and then looked at Conrad, as he went on.
Conrad said,
Quote:
"Lanark you say? I have roots in Lanark. My grandfather was born there too."

Immediately Hikenai became alert, the dissappearance of Cyrizus, Neo's birth father, from the dungeon at the castle after his attempted abduction of the child was so recent.....it still troubled her the man had seemed to vanish. Had he come from Lanark? Would Conrad know of him?
Her eyes drifted to Kelster, at this bit of information from their cousin, and she continued to listen as she took a small bite of roast chicken.
Conrad said,

I am glad to hear you shall join us at the castle. Of course, you are welcome to stay, Cousin Conrad, but we do not want to impose upon the plans you may have already made for your time here in Egremont.
Hik took a sip of her ale, as her cousin spoke.
Conrad said,
Quote:

"I never thought you were so interested in herbs and their use. But then again, funerals aren't the best means to meet people and learn about their interests. I would really love to visit the apothecary shop."

Yes, I have long been interested in herbs, Conrad, and collect them from the parkland around the castle, for fresh use by my shop customers. Also, I import some from the south, as well, and now that the shipping lanes have opened, I actually have managed to contact suppliers in China. I have an excellent herb called ginkgo bilobah that drunk as a tea, sharpens the memory. I will give you a tour of my shop at your convenience, cousin, and we can talk herbs!
Hikenai smiled at both Conrad and Kelster, so happy their Wallace cousin had arrived in Egremont.

He could see that something was wrong, when he noticed Hikenai's reaction right after he mentioned both Neonea and Lanark. He didn't press on either subject though. In the first case, he could feel it had something to do with the incident during the funeral. And it was exactly that incident that led him to Egremont anyway. The time had come for them to know what happened to his sister. But, even though the circumstances were now much better than during the funeral, he still had no idea how to say it. His cousins would be devastated. As for the second case, he felt it was none of his business to inquire about it at all. If Hikenai wanted to talk about the reason which even the mention of Lanark made her tense for, he felt that she would speak to him on her own. He didn't see why he should insist on something that didn't seem to concern him.

"China?", he exclaimed, "I'm totally unaware of the herbs that grow in those far away lands. I only know of those growing within the British Isles." He had no problem admiting that his knowledge on herb lore was very limited. He considered it quite possible for Hikenai to know more things about herbs than him. He had learned everything he knew by himself, never having studied at the university, and, most of the time, he had just worked on gathering herbs and delivering them to infirmaries to make a living. It took him years to become familiar enough with the use of herbs in making tea, ointments and salves and become a healer himself. But he still had lots of things to learn. "And as a healer", he added, "I only use those that strengthen both the body and the mind, cleanse them from illness and heal them from injury."

Neonea
I skipped in, as happy as can be. I had jumped the ride in to the tavern, too happy to come along. The days had been hard on me, and nights sometimes harder, but in the moment, as only a child lived, my emotions changed. I didn't weigh heavy with memory or burden, not at that moment. I let myself think of other things. The sun blazing in the sky to the earth below, the grass that danced with the breeze, and the breeze that messed my hair about.

I looked Hikenai first, my smile growing with the welling ball of love that built inside of me. As I came to their table, I saw the face of the man, and without meaning to, my smile faded slowly. It became a look of curiosity as I came to his side instead of Hikenai's. My tiny hand rested on his arm gently- not to startle him.

I was wise in my childhood, my eyes large and loving, innocent and knowing. Yet, I was still only a child. And children hardly thought before they speak. Because I knew him when I saw his face, I recalled the events. Apparently, not well enough to remember the manners that were taught that day.

"Have you told the truth yet?"

"No.", he simply stated softly and without being startled by the little girl's touch on his arm, since he had heard her come in and he also remembered the tone of her voice from the previous time they had met. He was aware of what truth Neonea was talking about, hence why his answer was so plain and simple. After all, he hadn't said a single lie, intentionally or not, during his visit at the 'Kel's Bells' tavern, so it was easy for him to conclude that she was talking about the incident during brother Chris's funeral. He wasn't really fond of lying himself. He hated lies. But that funeral had been the exception, due to the circumstance. "This girl", he thought to himself, "may actually help me say what I have come to Egremont to say to them anyway. It's still so hard... They... Oh well..."

He took a deep breath and looked at Neonea.
"But I think it's the right time for it.", he added with a nod of his head.

My hand rested on his shoulder, and the disappointment that he hadn't come clean about a lie I knew he told, although I knew not what the truth of what he needed to say was. His answer was simple, and he looked thoughtful for a moment as I gazed up at him before he finally decided that perhaps it was just the right time to come clean.

I looked at Hikenai, and back at Conrad. I knew in my heart he'd feel better for telling the truth to whatever it was he needed to tell her. Slowly, I let my hand fall from his arm, and I strode to Hikenai's side, leaning into her.

Hikenai
Hikenai had been enjoying the conversation Conrad, and she was lost in thought, mentally listing the herbs, and their uses, which she wanted to discuss with him. She was always seeking to learn more, and there was something in the manner of which Conrad spoke, that told Hikenai there was much she could learn from him. She had not noticed Neonea enter the tavern, until the little one was close enough suddenly be standing there at Conrad's side. Neonea place her tiny hand on his arm and said,
Quote:
"Have you told the truth yet?"

Oh Jah! Hikenai was at a loss as what to think! Again, just as she had at Brother Chris's funeral, Neonea had zeroed in on some lie she insisted Conrad reveal the truth of! What could this possibly mean? Before Hik or Kelster could overcome their surprise, and speak up to somehow tactfully smooth over their child's abrupt question, Conrad answered Neo, that no, he had not. He then stated something that surprised Hikenai, for it indicated that their cousin somehow knew what Neonea was speaking of!
Conrad said,
Quote:
"But I think it's the right time for it.",
Hikenai eyes met Kelsters', and she wondered, with a growing sense of alarm, just what they were about to hear. She knew somehow, it had something to do with Scotland!

"It's...", he muttered after taking another deep breath, but he immediately paused. "It's now or never.", he thought to himself as his gaze went back and forth between his cousins, "Let's get over with it." He looked at his pint of ale, which he hadn't touched yet. He hadn't even touched any of the dishes on the table. No matter how delicious they looked and smelled, he was no longer in the mood to either eat or drink. He then looked at Kelster and Hikenai. "It's a rather long story", he finally added when his gaze met Neonea, as if the girl's innocent face could give him more confidence to say what he had to say, "and I will have to start from the end, otherwise it will be harder to explain. And I don't want to bore you to death with details..."

He lowered his head lightly, his eyes meeting his pint of ale again. "It has to do with my sister and her very long absence, especially from the funeral of the Wallace chief, brother Chris."

A sharp intake of breath as she sat forward expressed the abrupt change in Hikenai's demeanor. Her discomfort over the forwardness of her daughter had shifted to a vague anxiety, as the tone of Conrad's voice was edged with the unmistakable inflection of pain.

Conrad said,
Quote:
"It has to do with my sister and her very long absence, especially from the funeral of the Wallace chief, brother Chris."

As she prepared herself to hear what she surmised as bad news, Hik instinctively reached down to lift Neonea to her lap. The weight of the child against her, comforted Hik as she wrapped her arms about the tiny form, and held her snugly. Conrad had said he didn't want to go over the details, and would start at the end......the end......what an ominous choice of words! He was speaking of Jasmine Silver Wolf, his sister, a fearless freedom fighter in Scotland.......and her absence from the funeral last winter. It had been Jas's absence that Neonea had remarked upon as Conrad having lied about. Hikenai felt a crushing sense of doom as she held Neonea on her lap, and prepared to listen to Conrad.
