As Kel walked into the tavern, he noticed the fire already lit and heard a noise coming from the kitchen. Smiling, he knew that Hik had already got here, beat him to opening the tavern. How happy he was to finally have her here, in the tavern which held there future prosperity. She was so good for, turned him around, made his life seem like the storys he had heard of a young man, of everlasting love and the words, lived happily ever after seemed to fit when he thought of her and himself. Smelling the air, he could smell her scent, it always seemed to smell like the finest roses grown in the grounds of Wallace castle.

Hik! Are you there my darling? People should start arriving soon!

Hikenai gets Areth his ale and places it on the counter before him. She smiles at Areth and wonders about his flute playing. Where did he learn such haunting melodies? The tunes he plays make her imagination take off and she could listen to him play all day.

Beautiful weather, yes! I was so glad to see the clouds move off. Even though its so cold, the sun does make up for it a little bit! Tis dazzling! Hikenai placed some rolls and a pot of creamy butter on the counter. Eat up, Areth, please help yourself! Hik knew Areth had not ordered any food, but she hoped he might join her and Kel for some buttered rolls. The were hot from the oven!

Voices, why were there voices in her bedroom?

Hard, cold... why was her bed hard and cold?

She turned over, and got her legs entangled in ... things, there was a dull scraping sound, like a chair being dragged across a wooden floor. Why were her legs entangled in a wooden chair?

Thud, her head impacted with something hard she must speak to the maid about the quality of the pillows..

She opened her eyes, and was struck by the fact that her bedroom ceiling looked very like the underside of a table.

She laid still for a while, the 'ceiling' was swooping down towards her and turning in circles above her, and she needed to hang on tight to the world, cos she felt like she might fall off any minute now.

Beer, she had a vague memory of beer... lots of it, some sort of celebration? or was it a commiseration?... there had been singing she knew that for certain... she sniggered, the one about the pirates peg leg had been a doozy!

She stopped sniggering, the whole room sort of bucked and bounced when she sniggered... she groaned softly and laid still again, maybe if she was very very lucky... she might die of alcohol poioning and not have to deal with the hangover?

It was sort of like how metal is in the forge... gradually getting brighter and brighter, until the hammer hits it and sparks fly and the noise rings out loud... thats how her head felt right now...

she groaned again, and groped blindly with her hands, she needed something to deaden the pain,
she needed something to dull her senses,

Somehow she managed to roll onto her front, and pull her knees up under her.

The damned floor wouldn't stay still though, it kept reolving and tipping and she nearly fell off this time! She wrapped her arms around the table leg and clung on tightly, it would stop soon, and she'd try opening her eyes again... soon...

Hikenai sat in the warmth of the large arm chair of Kel's Bell's Tavern---the one directly in front of the fireplace---the chair where folks sit when they have a lot on their minds, when they might not want to be disturbed. She sipped the tea she prepared especially for that snowy afternoon, a very sweet blend to which she added liberal doses of the tincture Hikenai now carried everywhere with her. Hikenai had decided to send Ladies Afton, and Blythe, back to Barnstaple, with the rest of the retinue attending her here in Egremont. There was no reason for them to stay on, their services could be put to good use back in Barnstaple. She had written Chrisiusmaximus that only Sir James Bland and his squire, Robert Stafford would stay, to accompany her in her travels around Cumberland, as she visited various friends she'd made while patrolling the border with the Brotherhood.
Hikenai wanted to stop at Merriweather Fortress, even though Snow and Paddy were no longer in residence. She knew they would expect her to stay there as she visited friends in the north, but without them there, she was not sure she would stay. Hikenai sighed heavily, wishing she knew more of her brother's heart. And she sighed again, as she thought of the Blood Oath Brotherhood, and missed her sisters and brothers there most sorely, remembered how she had left them in Chester, ridden north to Egremont, to Kel. There were some who might feel she had run out on her oath, but Hikenai knew she was devoted as ever to their mission. And she had kept the peace in Cumberland, stood ready to fight there. Let them keep the peace in Chester without her, nay, she had sought a leave of absence long before her orders to march out of Barnstaple once again, and long before Chester and Helios had worked out some sort of peace, however uneasy.
Hikenai also could not stop thinking about Su-su. She had written to Havelock Richileau, the child's guardian and benefactor, asking for Su to accompany her and Kel while they were on progress in Cornwall, later in spring and summer. But that was not for several more months, and Hikenai longed for her. Hikenai would have given anything to have had her little foster daughter with her. But Hikenai also knew, that even should the weather been very fair, Brother Rich would not have allowed the child to come to Cumberland with her. She knew she must be patient and pursue legal means to adopt Su-su. She had no legal claim to the little lass. She could not forget having been Su's foster mother for that short time in Barnstaple, however, and Hikenai's heart consticted for a moment, as she missed Su. Now, as Hikenai sat in front of the roaring fire, she remembered another fire, a bon fire in Barnstaple and how happily Su-su had been, all snuggled up before it.

The drink seemed to help, and Lizzy sat there, on the floor, beside the bar, half under the table, and watched the romantic scene by the fire... it was...nice. As her head slowely began to clear she pulled herself slowly and tentatively to her feet

"I'll erm, go clean something, or cook something...or something"

she said, wanting to not be a gooseberry, sometimes she felt like she spent half her life as a small prickly green fruit..

She slid behind the bar, not her job, but it was her Cousins tavern, and since she never actually paid for anything she consumed there, she felt she ought to at least do her bit, the bottles looked dusty, she turned her back on the room, and polished things.

........if her parents are not located, if no other family can be found, and if Brother Rich can be persuaded, I want us to adopt her as soon as possible after we marry, Kelster. The tears that had begun to start up in Hikenai's eyes, seemed to vanish as she spoke. It was as simple as that, surely, should Su's family not be found. She held Kel's hand and they sat quietly before the fire. Hikenai basked in the certainty that Kel wanted children as much as she did. They could provide a loving and harmonious home for the child and Hikenai was hopeful that Richileau would realize that. Kel, I believe I shall go back to the Inn and write to Brother Rich. I hope he will send us news of Su. I want Rich to know, and for Su, especially to know, I have not forgotten about her this winter. I miss her very much.

I was happy there were plenty of customers milling about, for I slipped through the bar to Kelster Wallace, as he stood by the counter, a tankard in his fist. He looked rather somber, and I smiled brightly as I approached. As he nodded his head, I thought what a gentleman he was, for he pulled out a chair for me at a nearby table.
Why Lady Blythe, may I get you some tea? I had to laugh at the formality of it. I was just Blythe Williams, and in Barnstaple, where I met him, he was just Kelster. Hikenai insisted on informality and those who entered her home, were on a first name basis with everyone else, regardless of class or station. But here, in public, in his business, I was the picture of prim and proper behavior. At this I smiled, however, for I was not going to stay prim and proper, oh no!
Why, my lord, I would love some tea! I sank gracefully into the chair he offered and smiled again. I so love being in Egremont!

Lizzy looked furtively at Kel and Hik, hoping they wouldn't blab

"oh, you know... Up with the lark..early bird.. hair of the dog...and the devil makes work for idle hands... " she ran out of metaphors, and smiled weakly, running her fingers through her hair, which was now so tangled she thought it may be beyond hope...

she sat down at the table nearest the fire and stared into the flames, wondering if anyone had fed the pigs... "bacon and eggs" she murmered quietly... she hadn't eated for 18 hours and her stomach was beginning to complain about the all liquid diet, oddly enough the thought of greasy bacon and eggs fried in fat didn't make her feel worse, in fact in her opinion it was the perfect way to end a 36 hour day. (which is what some people would call starting the next one)

Kelster smiled at Lil. It is all right Lil, there was no need to open up, it seems Liz never left. Instead of starting to clean, could you go and make Liz some bacon and eggs, she is cleaning the bar to earn her breakfast this morning, it seems she spent all her money on ale last night.

Kel went back to thinking of Lady Hikenai writing the letter to Rich concerning little Su-su, Forgetting about Blythe sitting at the table with him for a moment. Jerking back to reality, he turned his head back towards Blythe. Sorry Blythe, I was just thinking of Lady Hikenai, would you like another drink?

Lili was very glad to see herself off the hook and Kel so peaceful. She put down the dirty mugs and stepped to the cooker. "Pepper on your eggs, Lizzy?"
As she made Lizzy's...well, lunch she thought about the previous night, trying to remember how many drinks she had. "Awww..." If only the thought of that wouldn't hurt so much. Last thing that crossed her mind was herself on the bar "dancing" with a mug in each hand and trying to keep her balance. "What a night! This tavern's got the strongest beer in town." she mumbled, while chopping the bacon.

She gave Lizzy her plate and fed Norbo too, the took a seat, her head in her hands, daydreaming a litle more.

I came around the cornor and was pleased to see that the tavern was packed.
My lady. Sir James helped me down from Drambuie and I rubbed Dram's neck for a minute and scratched his ear. I hesitated a moment there, with Sir James, as he waited for me to enter the tavern before he would lead Dram and the other warhorse to the livery stables. I wanted to broach the subject of the others returning to Barnstaple, with him and young Stafford staying on to assist me. Having an escort everywhere was unnerving to me sometimes. My brother was so kind and protective, but really, I felt guilty for having a small entourage. These people were needed elsewhere probably and now, especially Sir James, for I had heard rumor at the tavern that......and my mind wandered a moment before I entered, a sense of guilt and shame overtaking me. I missed the Brotherhood, and most especially, Chrisiusmaximus, Paddy, Snow, Mistyblue, Veroncia, Black Nic, the children--all of us de Peche's. And again, my heart constricted with longing for Cornwall and with the desire to see my family, to see us all gathered together. Then I turned, nodded at Sir James, he swung open the tavern door, and I entered.

Hikenai entered the tavern with a heavy heart. Seeing Kelster's face, however, her heart soared as he crossed the room, and grasped her by the waist, lifted her up, and spun her around before he lowered her into his kiss and warm embrace. Hikenai felt immediately consoled, just looking into his eyes. Kelster's kiss removed any worry or unhappiness the moment his lips sought hers. She thought of the man Kelster was, how honored she was he had asked her to be his wife, how happy she was with him, how each hurdle or obstacle they faced and conquered together, had strengthened their bond, brought them closer. One day in the early fall of this new year, she would marry Kelster, and thinking about this, as Kelster asked if she would like a shot of whisky........ would you like a dram of whisky to warm you up on this cold day? Hikenai tilted her head back and laughed. Yes, darling, I would love one to help get warm! Hikenai watched Kel's hands as he prepared the little glass for her. Hikenai looked at those hands and saw them, as if for the first time, the hands of the man who would be her husband. She nearly got goosebumps, but it was not from the cold. Then Hikenai looked at her own hands. When they married, she and Kel would work hard. She wanted to work hard right along side Kelster. Hikenai looked forward to this and dreamed of it often, a life with Kel, a home and children.........Then a cloud passed over Hikenai's face and Kelster, who could read Hik like a book noticed.....

Hikenai smiled gratefully at Kel. She did not have to hide her feelings or pretend things were alright when they were not. He always wanted to know her feelings and always tried to help her achieve whatever she desired. How could he know, she thought, that which she desired most might, be the only thing she would ever have to deny him, as well? Yes, Kel, I am thinking about Su. I do hope Rich will decide to allow her to accompany us when we go to traveling about Cornwall, especially if we do happen to go beyond, perhaps to Sussex, as well! Hikenai felt a large lump in her throat and she willed herself to smile and appear gay. Hopefully, she would not have to address this with Kel, now......not just yet..... Although, Hikenai thought to herself, time was definitely her enemy.

As Kel was talking to Hik, he noticed another cold chill enter the room as the door opened. Looking over Hiks shoulder to see who had entered, his eyes came upon a very strange looking man, someone he had never seen in Egremont before. Thinking to himself that this fellow appeared to walk in a strange manner, maybe from some old war wound or maybe a defect from his birth, he wondered if this chap needed some assistance as Lil was attending another table. Excuse me just for one second my love, I think this man may need serving.

Walking back to behind the bar, Kel puts on a welcoming smile. What can I do for you my good man, maybe a drink or do you need to look at our menu?

My palms were actually sweaty. When Kelster Wallace called me 'my good man' I was, for a moment, outraged he was taken in by my disguise, then realized it was to my credit that he was unaware of my gender, and my identity was still a secret. I dropped my head and mumbled in a low voice Aye, I would like a shot of whisky if you have it, sir! And d'ye not, then ale would suffice! Out of the cornor of my eye, I saw a man enter the tavern and approach the bar. As he came up along side me, I could not help but see he was quite handsome. He wore an eye patch. It bestowed upon him an air of mystery and danger, and I so wished that I did not have to keep up my deception! Of all times for me to have to continue in my disguise as a boy!

Thank You, May I ask why is that Woman you just served Dressed as A man? Unless it is some sort of festival, which I doubt as no one else is dressed diffrently.

Why certainly my good man, as it happens I have brought back from Scotland with me the finest whisky you could hope to drink. Kelster Wallace treated me as any other customer. He was as handsome and gentlemanly as I remembered him and I was glad to have a shot of whisky at last. For a moment, I thought about the Chief Beer Inspector, and our investigation of the whisky of Scotland, before our trip snagged on the knife Grifter had driven into the porch post the night he should have taken my life. Everything in my life had changed with one drink with Grifter, one dance with Grifter, and that damn dagger. But before I could think too much about the old inspector, I heard Kelster Wallace say Zuk! How are you my friend, I will get you some whisky, on the house of course, and, as I watched the bar maid approach them, I heard the customer say, as I raised the shot glass to my lips and attempted to toss the liquour down my throat, Thank You, May I ask why is that Woman you just served Dressed as A man?
And then.....Blllwwaaahhhhhaaaaa!!!!!! at hearing the stranger's unexpected words, my heart leaped up into my throat, my throat clenched, and the whisky shot out! It sprayed the bar in front of me, just after the young bar maid had turned to me and smiled. I was mortified! Humiliated! Not only had I wasted the whiskey, and caused all heads to rivet, and all eyes to glance my way---even stare at me--- but I was unmasked, the stranger had recognized me as a woman, and having this happen, in a public tavern was catastrophic. I stood there, haplessly shaking my head, looked around desperately, and then, not knowing what to do, flew out the door!

Zukran chuckled as the girl ran out.

It appears the man with one eye see's better than the man with both no?

"Anyway as much as I am here to get drunk, I'm here to ask you to take me to the nearby woods, I need a guide. You see I'm looking for something and I think I can find it there."

Lizzy was still sat by the fire, her now empty plate pushed away from her and her now empty mug still gripped in her hands, she sat staring into its emptyness, contemplating things of deep meaning...such as: why wasn't anyone re-filling her mug? and why was that woman dressed as a man? and did that man really have only one eye, or did he just think the patch made him look dashing, dangerous, and interesting? Deciding that the mug was unlikely to fill itself, she pushed herself away from the table, her surpprisingly full purse worried her... her skirts swishing dangerously close to the fire, and causing the sparks to fly like shooting stars. Heading for the bar, and successfully manouvering around various obstacles, which was an improvement on the preious evening, she paused for a moment her head tilted to the side, her eyebrow raised, as a flashback reminded her just how she had ended up sleeping under the table... once down, she had decided it was easier to give in than to try to actually get up again...
She resumed her journey to the bar, and deposited her mug and empty plate there.

"Oh lord Lil, any chance of another one, my ruddy head is pounding!" in a lower voice she whispered "Lil, did I erm, do anything...embaressing last night, I have this image of me ..on the bar..dancing, and possibly there might have been shimmies involved" it brought back memories, of more lucrative, but less respectable times.

She giggled again at the image she had in her mind and winked at Lizzy, adding "But I think it is alright, when I left the tavern, close to dawn, I thought there was no one left, so I suppose you had already dozed off under the table." She laughed and took the plate to wash it, drawing Liz's attention that Hik called for her.

Ascalaroth enters this curiously named tavern ,grateful to be out of the streets ,but still not where he would like to be .He wonders how much longer he will have to wander till he return where he belongs .He is heavily dressed ,but not because of the cold ,he is used to far worse ,it is because he feels out of place here .Only his kilt ,that he wears with pride ,can set him apart ,but he does not hide it .His clans colours really strike out ,as the rest of his garments are all black .He sits at a table positioned at a far corner ,and removes his hood from his face .He tries to take in all of the inn ,noting where everything is ,and waits to get something to drink .This place feels different somehow ,more cosy ,but still he cannot wait till he is back on the road .

Lil could you serve the man wearing the kilt who is sitting alone, we must make sure he has a fine Wallace welcome, we can't have him saying the northern Wallace's of England don't know how to treat a member of the Rose clan! Give him this large glass of whisky and tell him it's on the house from the Wallace's.

Lilith smiles upon hearing her brother's words. She figures it has to be an important guest if Kel wants him treated with such reverence. She takes the glass of whisky and swiftly walks toward the man who seems a bit uncomfortable. As she arrives in front of him, she gives out a gentle smile and places the glass on the table, removing the plate with food.

"Greetings, kind sir! Welcome to our fair town! My brother sends his regards together with this glass of the finest whisky. It is on the house!" she winks playfully, and looks at him trying to let him now that he is safe and surrounded by good hearted people. "Would you like to join us for another drink?"

As she hears him talk, the Scottish tongue sings in Lilith's ears and she feels once again the wish to see her true home, but she masters the excitement and replies with a smile

"My good man, I understand your concern, to be in unfamiliar surroundings and in England too! But though you cannot see my brother wearing his kilt, in which he takes great pride, he is a Scott of the Wallace clan, as am I and our dear cousin Liz. Thus, please feel like home in this place, it is with great joy that we welcome you!" Lilith places her hand upon his, though a bit unsuited for a young lady, she wanted the guest to feel at ease, and looked him in the eyes to show him she speaks the truth.

Relieved that their guest seems to have relaxed, even if just a bit, she smiles, yet again, and excuses herself as she goes to fetch what he requested. Heading to the bar, Lilith paused next to Kel and let him know she will be keeping the man company until he and Hik, maybe even Lizzy, can join them as well. She prepares the meal as she glances toward the new man and finds herself smiling for no reason, but quickly composes herself as she had blushed. When food is ready, she walks to the table in the corner and places the plate in front of him, together with the beverage he asked for.
"Enjoy your meal, sir! I hope it does you justice, with this cold winter a hot meal and a good drink is what mends both body and spirit." She giggles and takes a seat, caring to light a candle upon the table. "Pardon me, I have not been in my best manner, I have yet to introduce myself. I am Lilith, sister to Kelster Wallace, the owner of this tavern, which will hopefully be joining us as soon as he is done with his business."

As the lass returns to his table bringing him what he asked for ,he catches himself watching her ,following her movements .As the food is placed in front of him ,and also the bottle of Gin is brought ,he watches her sitting down and lighting a candle .He would really rather have no light ,and as he was about to put it out ,he is surprised as she presents herself .She is not a mere member of the Wallace clan ,but the sister of the owner of this tavern ,an important man no doubt .So he was treating her all this time as a common barmaid ,and she did not correct him .Though she was not acting as would be expected .Realising his mistake he stands up and bows his head to her .

It is a pleasure to meet you Lady Lilith Wallace .I am happy to be at the presence of good people in this land .And I would be honoured to have Sir Kelster Wallace join us as well .But lady ,food and drink mean nothing to the soul if it is not shared with good company ,and for that I thank you for sitting with me .

Before sitting again he takes her hand in his and lowers himself to place a kiss on it .He smiles at her as he straightens and goes back to take his seat .He pours himself a glass of Gin and looks for lady Lilith's glass .Not seeing one he looks at her ,and not drinking himself ,he starts talking to her ,looking into her eyes .

Lady Lilith ,will you not share some drink with me ?I do not want to force you into drinking ,I just enjoy my drinking done with others .But if you do not want ,your presence is enough .

As lady Lilith returns he rises from his seat helping her sit ,and then pouring some Gin in her glass .Only then does he take his seating again .He raises his glass to hers and then drinks a generous amount from his glass .

Lady Lilith your words show the greatness of your ,and your Clan's ,soul ,but no need to offer them so easily .Please it would do me more good if I were to hear those words at the end of the day .And about my journey ,well mine is not a happy story ,and forgive me but I do not offer it idly .It is not that I do not trust you ,I do not have many left to trust .So pardon me ,and ask me something else if you will .

His words bring him sorrow ,and only doubt about his future ,not sure what he will find ,only sure that he has to go back .After draining his glass he pour another one to himself ,and looks to the lady in case she needs more .Even though he feels sorrow creeping up on him again ,his almost constant partner ,looking up at the one who keeps him company today ,he can't help a smile appearing .

Now milady if you would be so kind as to offer me your story ,as I eat the food you cared to bring me ,I would like to know what you are doing here and I do have a feeling you have either never visit glorious Scotland ,or you were far to young .

And as he waits for her to start ,with a smile to her first ,he gets ready to taste her cooking .

Lilith silently admires this man's impecable manners, as he helps her sit and pours the drink in her glass. Surely she was the one to do it at all times, especially since she'd been Kel's barmaid. But outside this tavern, her brothers treated her much like royalty and would never have to pour the drink herself, or cook a meal, unless she took pleasure in it. She and her darling sister Sassy were quite spoiled, as it was. She giggled at the thought and turned to listen to the man in front of her. She liked his voice, calm and steady, but strong...and that fine accent! His eyes sparkled a bit and although he seemed far from happy, she could see this man had hope and dreams. She liked that and taking her glass she wished him luck, then sipped her drink.
There was a subtle warmth floating in the air that particular night, Lilith could feel her hands get numb, and her smile was as if carved on her face, it would not vanish. Listening to Ascalaroth speak, he instantly notices the man seems to be intelligent and on hearing he has studied at the university of Calais, Kelster is most impressed.

Kelster can not help feeling a little disappointed, for not only was Ascalaroth a Scot, but over the short time they had spoken, Kel had grown to like the man. But he knew that Scotland's green hills and the smell of heather draws men back there.

Lilith listens to their conversation, interested in the story of this new man. He does not seem to lay much of it on the table, however she can take the bits he does tell. There was a peculiar curiosity taking over Lilith, she wished to get to know sir Rose. Upon hearing about his thoughts to soon make his departure, she could not help but let sadness overwhelm her. She would have been most happy to enjoy his company at least a bit longer.
As she was looking straight into his eyes, and followed their every spark, she felt a sudden urge to take his hand and squeeze it in hers, but it would have been terribly unsuited. Lilith could not come to understand what had happened to her, to make her think of such uncanny things.
His eyes let her know he would not be leaving this tavern with a light heart, and wanted to comfort him, but in a lady manner, fit for their status, as they were, after all, only two strangers still.

"Kind sir, I listen to your voice and it tells me that you speak the truth. I am indeed very happy to have made your aquaintance and feel honored to have had such a good man as a guest. I do hope you have felt welcomed here, as we intended and please, do accept my brother's offerings. It will be of great use to you on your way." she lowered her voice a bit, and slightly blushing, she leaned closer to him, whispering "The pleasure of your visit has made me wish it could be prolonged for a few moments at least...but I do hope you can find your way back here some day."

She then grasped her glass and took another sip, her hands slightly trembling, hoping that the man will not think of her as rude for her words and manner.

He was still very much surprised at all that he did find here .He was only going to have something to drink ,something to eat and then go back on his way .He had no plans of staying here this long ,but he did not expect to find people that could keep him this long as well .As he was watching lord Kelster walk away ,he feels the squeeze on his hand ,and he takes the lady's hand in his in return ,holding it gently but firm .Turning his attention fully on the lady on his side ,he finds himself once again under the hold of her gaze .He listens as she speaks to him ,but finds himself feeling a bit offended at her manner .He offers her a slight smile ,but one that does not reach his eyes .

Milady ,I never dreamed of insulting neither you ,nor your Clan ,nor did I consider that a fellow Scot would be so petty as to offer something ,only in the hopes of serving him an ulterior motive .So no need to offer me lessons in manners ,Milady .

But no matter how much he was trying to keep an edge on his voice ,caring though not to seem threatening ,her eyes seem to melt slowly the ice in his .Seeing as he might have gone to far ,he smiles to her warmly ,and this time one that is mirrored in his eyes .Looking a bit around making sure no one was watching him intently ,he approaches her and in turn whispers in her ear .

I am sorry for my manner ,I have been away from good people for way too long .I thank you for all your attention and words ,and for those left unsaid .

As he pulls away to straighten himself once again ,he find himself unable to stop ,and kisses the lady on her cheek .A smile still on his face ,glad that there was not allot of light where they were sitting ,he empties his glass and gets up .He gathers up his things ,getting ready to go ,but not wanting to deny the lord's help any further ,he waits for the provisions to arrive .But as he gets ready to go he sees that he leaves a pouch ,with enough coins to pay for all they have offered him ,on the table .

Ascalaroth walks to the door ,his trip back to his house very much ahead of him still ,but as his belonging got heavier he step grew lighter .He was getting closer ,and the presence of good people is evidence of that .Before opening the door to disappear into the night ,he turns to lady Lilith offering her one last smile and a silent thanks to her as well .He then turns to the rest of the tavern ,seeing all there in turn .Seeing Lord Klester he offers one last bow with his head .But before going he feels he has to offer one last thanks .

As Lili watched the handsome man leave, she felt sad, but strangely hopeful. She followed him go with her look until he faded in the dark, then shut the door to the tavern and returned to clean the table they had been sitting at. Once done, she walked towards Kel and squeezed his hand, thanking him for being so kind and she winked at him letting Kel know he guessed his sister's feelings. She then went back to attend her usual duties around the tavern, waiting for maybe another customer to make the time pass swiftly.

Lilith keeps herself busy cleaning up the sauna until it looks all brand new. The floor is shiny, windows sparkling and the rocks are put in place, forming one nice arrangement. All this, thinking of the handsome stranger that just left and as she works, she wonders if their paths will ever meet again. She can't help letting a deep sigh slip through her lips as she takes one last look at the sauna, standing by the door. She then exists and shuts the door, putting away the broom and cloth she used. She continued with the bar and as she washed the mugs, she took a quick look around the tavern to see if anyone needed another drink. But what was supposed to be a quick peek, turned into one serious stare, as the man with the eye patch took out what looked like weapons in the dim light of the tavern. "Oh, my...." she whispers to herself and forgets the mugs for a moment, forcing herself to see what else this man brought with him. Too dark, but something as sparkly as her freshly cleaned windows. As the three of them moved to a more secluded corner, she tried to eavesdrop on their conversation, if nothing, but out of sheer curiosity. It was a very mysterious visit, indeed...

Hikenai listened closely to Zuk but was only certain of two things, when Zukran said, Firstly the Base is invisisble to all who don't wear these amulets. Then I found out that they carry certian weapons, I noticed this with two similar weapons. One sword from Aletek, and the second from the one I was stabbed with. Both had the same ruby jewel in them, and Ironiclly they had the same co-ordinates on them. She knew the base he spoke of was in the Weald! And Aletek was dead, that she knew, as well....Hikenai feared for Zukran's life, but looked at Kel questioningly. Too much seemed to be going on, too quickly for Hik to comprehend how she fit into the scheme of things. She was attempting to distance herself from active duty in the BOB, but recently received a letter from Paddy, asking her to think about ending her leave of absence, and both she and Kel, join the Brotherhood and her family, in Keswick. She had not found the chance this day to talk with Kel about that, plus the uncertainty of the repercussions returning to the ranks would have on their endeavor to, hopefully, adopt Su. This made Hikenai feel very uncertain and insecure. She especially did not like the danger Zukran seemed so willing to place himself in! Then Zuk said, In the short of it, the Base we are entering is one of many bases, that is controlled by the Order, who want me dead, but i'm not hear to kill them, nor should we unless we have to. I'm here to break someone out of Prison! Hikenai knew that, even should she not be able to help Zukran, she had to hear more....
But Zuk, why do you think we----or Kel---can lead you there....to this base? I am still not sure what you mean, but surely, tis a place in the Weald, surely..... this prison must be there!

Hikenai's heart was beating fast. She was feeling the excitement she often felt as she had prepared for battle while active with the BOB. Zuk had been her friend for a long time, and she would not allow him to face danger alone. She could, at least, provide an escort surely....and for a comrade in the Brotherhood, as well! Please Zuk, just tell us a bit more, my friend......how long do you expect this should take? And these amulets, what exactly are they for? And Hikenai did not know what to imagine, but she knew what she feared in this world usually walked upon two feet. In Hikenai's mind there were no demons nor dragons. She had never been to the Weald before........

Lizzy's eyes sparkled as the pack-roll was laid out on the table, her fingers twitched and her hand reached involuntarily toward the jeweled amulets. Snatching it back, she placed her hands firmly behind her back and took a deep breath, 'no Lizzy, stealing is wrong...wrong' her conscience told her... but those swords were soooo pretty....

As the dashing one eyed man began to tell his tale, her interest was stirred, the one thing that appealed to her more than sparkly jewels was adventure, and oddly enough the more the man described the danger, the wider her smile became. Even the hangover seemed to have evaporated, nothing like a bit of adrenaline to cure a hangover.

"sorry, what exactly are you looking for? Is it treasure?" 'please say its treasure, please say its treasure...' this was the other little voice, the one she actually listened too and which tended to get her into trouble!

Although she only was prepared to accompany Zuk a little ways into the Weald, still she did not want her friend to face any danger alone.
Come after me if I do not return in three days my love. Hikenai whispered to Kelster, and she held him close for several long minutes, before she slipped from his grasp, and received his clasped hands with her boot, as he helped her mount Drambuie. Three days my love.......... Then Hikenai turned to Zukran, as she nudged Dram in the side very gently, Let's make tracks!

Lilith kept "spying" on them from behind the bar, only able to hear fragments of their conversation, but leaning forward and forward, trying to keep silent so she could hear more. But alas! there was not too much her ears could grasp. She couldn't have just gone there uninvited. This mystery appealed to her so! She felt her stomach flooded by thousands of little butterflies, like she felt earlier, at the first glimpse of....misfortune as it turned out. But thank goodness, this was something else!
She kept watching, feeling she would soon lose patience and just barge in their convo shamelessly, but she blinked startled, hearing Hik pronounce a name "the Weald". "Oh, my! This must be quite an adventure!" She then saw Hikenai leaning over and giving her brother Kel a quick kiss before dashing through the door with her friend Zukran.

I have no idea what just happened, unless Hik is getting second thoughts about our wedding?

She heard Kel speak and she forgot about secretly following them. She pout her lips and walked towards Kel, giving him a hug. "Now, Kel, don't ever say that! She loves you very much but you know Hik! She loves adventure. I know she will be back..."

Still not able to understand why Hik had to leave so suddenly, after three days of waiting, Kelster still sat in his usual chair, drinking whiskey, always checking the door to see If his love would return. Would she return he thought, did she have second thoughts on there upcoming marriage, had the adventurous spirit of Hik turned her away from the thoughts of spending her life with him? Kel wanted to rush over to her, hug her, feel her her body close to his, but , he thought to himself, she was talking to Lil and Liz. Where has she been, what made her look so pale? Why had she Opals and why did she talk of the travellers stone. Perhaps she was asking his sister and cousin to go away with her? Going on an adventure? Leaving her thoughts of there upcoming marriage behind her?

Not knowing whether to go over to her and ask these questions just yet for fear of what may be the answer, he sits back in his seat , in the corner, in the dark, listening the best he could as to what may be happening.

Could she have sacrificed blood to get these so called magic opals? With there wedding so close, Kel began to wonder if Hik had been corrupted or possessed somehow. Staying in the shadows, he listened to the rest of Hik and Lil's conversation.

"Hik, what is wrong dear? You look like you just seen Jah himself!" Veroncia spoke with a bit of alarm in her voice, that Hikenai could easily detect, despite the younger girls attempt to disguise it with a giggle. Oh, V! I am so glad to see you, I am so glad you are here! Lili, this is my younger sister, Veroncia! And V, this is Kels' sister, Lilith, whose making our dresses! She sews beautifully.....
Hikenai had totally forgotten that Lilith and Veroncia had already met! Indeed, Veroncia had been in town and at the castle for TWO days waiting for Hikenai to return from her mission with Zukran Baneshiel, since she had arrived at the castle just hours before Hikenai and Zuk left on the ir mission to the Weald. . Hik's eyes were still rather hollow, and she turned to Lili, concern and exhaustion in her voice.
I think I might need to go to the castle and rest for awhile before I see Kel. By the way, just where is your brother?

Indeed, Hikenai's thoughts and memories now seemed merged into some walking nightmare from which she had only recently begun to emerge, with her arrival back at Kel's bar.

Hikenai felt the familiar touch as her heart began to race. She closed her eyes, smiled for a brief second as she felt herself lifted up, then kissed for a long delicious moment. As Kel lowered her to the floor, Hikenai placed her hands behind her back and untied the apron she wore, pulled it from her waist and took Kel by the hand, as he said, Good morning my love, you had left before I awoke, you seem to be very busy already. Her eyes never left his as she pulled him into the storage room at Kel's Bells, then shut and locked the door behind them. Hikenai loved keeping busy with Kel.

As I came through the back of the tavern, I could clearly see the outline of a man, already seated at the bar! As I drew nearer, carrying a heavy tray from the back, I could see he was finely dressed and vaguely familiar. He stood as I approached, shuffled from one foot to the other and smiled strangely, looking away. I placed the tray of clean glasses on the bar and smiled at him.
What for you, m'lord? My, he was handsome, and seemed, well......embarrassed for some reason or another...but he did sit back down and he smiled, too, revealing even, white teeth, a happy countenance and huge dark eyes.
I would like rolls, cheese, a boiled egg, perhaps, and small ale, as well....tis a bit too early in the day for anything stouter! He had a rich, melodious voice and I turned, quickly got his ale, and then started back for the kitchen, to ask cook for the rest.
I could have sworn Hikenai had already come in this morning but now, she was no where to be seen.

Her face flushed a little and Kelster loved it! She could tell he was delighted! She sighed, shook silently with laughter, and grinned at Kel, but then had to look away to keep from laughing even more! In her attempt to appear nonchalant, it was very difficult for her to keep a straight face. Their customer appeared to be a somber gentleman. Hikenai murmured, So, my love, I do think we need a good mouser here, to take care of that little varmint that keeps nibbling at the cheese!

Oh, that came out all wrong and Hikenai really had to concentrate to maintain her composure then. It was really quite wonderful. Every time she was with Kelster, he had a way of keeping her laughing, keeping her merry. She loved him so much, she had not thought it possible to love him more, and yet, there it was.

But now, Hikenai tied the apron back around her waist, and slapping at Kel playfully with a towel, as she and Blythe returned to the kitchen for two more trays of clean cups.

Hikenai clasped the darling kitten closely and kissed Kel, as she smiled and laughed at the same time.

He's precious, Kel! He even looks like his name is Felix! Hikenai stroked the wee little head, then held him aloft, staring him in the eyes. She remembered other kittens, Little Red, given to her in Barnstaple by Cathy and Jackbeer, and Churchill and Richileau, given her by Brother Rich.
Father Rich now, Hikenai thought to herself.

Ahhh, his eyes are dark as coal! As dark as the mines be, sometimes, Kel, and Hikenai giggled then. She didn't mind working in the mines for some reason, and often worked there all day, rushed back to the castle to scrub up in her oak tub, only to dash to Kel's Bells and draw ale and talk with their friends all night! Hikenai didn't see the incongruity of it, at all, she still reflected back on all those lonely years in the mists at Land's End. Egremont was upteen centuries from there, it seemed to Hikenai. Here she had life.

Kel, I love him already! Hikenai placed him along her forearm, and under her elbow somewhat. You know, I just said that about a mouser, well....um......because I was nervous and there was the man sitting there. But then later, I realized, he is a barrister. I wondered, do we have a barrister on retainer, dear?

Hikenai couldn't help herself, she took Kel by the hand and led him through Kel's Bells tavern, away from the itching ears of Blythe, through the kitchen, where she snatched up the kitten, and continued on out the back and over to the small kitchen garden planted along side the tavern stable. Drambuie and Miss Fortune became very excited to see Kel and Hik emerge from the tavern, and thought they were going to take a ride! They began to stomp their feet and snort in annoyance when they realized that was not going to happen. Hikenai giggled for a moment, it did seem to a shame to disappoint Dram and Miss Fortune...and she drew the apples and carrots from her skirt, smiled as she did so and turned to Kel.

I think perhaps, should we not adopt Su----um....Holly, well----we could adopt another child, Kel. A barrister, like Blackdrake should be able to arrange adoptions, and well----Osbert has adopted the boys and look how well that turned out. Please darling, while I am in Carlisle, think about it. When I return we can talk.

Hikenai smiled at Kel, and gave him a quick kiss. By the look upon his face, he was surprised to have heard what she had just said.

Reading the letter, Kel thought of his wife being so far away from him right now and he sighed. He looked around the tavern, so full of people it was but yet, it felt so empty to him, without her there, his wife. Thinking of how he missed her so very much, but also how it may not be such a good time to be in Cumberland right now, with the dark tide of war fast approaching them as it seemed to be. Sighing once again, he picked Felix up from the bar and took him in the back, putting down a saucer of cream for him and talking to the little kitten. Well Felix, I hope you are not fully grown by the time you're mother gets back.

Hikenai made sure she sent this letter on to Egremont by way of the courier service she knew the Brotherhood had used in the past. The business had been run by a father and son, friends of the de Peche family, with many ties to the Brotherhood. Now, a great many years later, the father was elderly, and the son loathe to see his father retire. It did Hikenai's heart good to see the man and his father together. Hikenai entrusted this letter to their service and she and Reynard left town shortly thereafter.



Hikenai was happy the strange ennui that had befallen her upon her departure from Carlisle had now lifted completely. Indeed, she felt a tremendous surge of energy as Drambuie flashed down the road, a dark blur against the roadside's delicate colors of spring.

But he had always been more interested in the study of fighting and drinking until his eyes first fell upon Hikenai. That was the day his life had changed for all time. Thinking of his wife, way off in Beeston, travelling further away from Cumberland, he sighed to himself, but knew the sooner she made it to Barnstaple, the sooner she would be home. To wrap his arms around her once again, to feel the touch of her soft hands on his face, just to see the smile that could turn the strongest of men into a quivering wreck, yes, she would be home. Soon his sister Lilith and United would be home again. How he longed for the day when Cumberland would be at peace again and all his family and friends could be together in Wallace castle once more, for that day would surely come, it must. Pouring Osbert a tankard of ale, he smiles at him.

I couldn't help but feel as if I were once more caught in the middle, my blood on one hand, and my bond on the other...Hikenai and I have butted heads many times in the past, and it always comes down to this...neither one willing to budge, or blink, a prolonged and suspicious silence, trifling matters being turned into barriers...

Sometimes working at Kel's Bells was annoying, in that, I wore more serviceable dresses, and not the party dresses, such as the latest one I had made. Living at Wallace Castle afforded me with room and board, so it did seem entirely right I should attire myself accordingly! For instance, there were times, such as at weddings, that I should look my best, especially as I am not getting any younger, and want to make the best possible match! So I do have a care as to how I look!

Hoban, my sister, urged me to save my money, invest in food and weaponry, and prepare to defend Cumberland. She actually went so far as to tell me what kind of sword and shield I'd need, and who to ask to have them made!

Oh, Hoban, there are troops at the front to fight those Scots and besides, if I bought all that, I would never have enough money for the silks and satin material I have my eyes on for my spring and summer gowns!

Blackdrake entered Kel's Bels and immediately felt a lessening of tension. Here he could sit alone, undisturbed, yet in the company of others. Kelster Wallace, himself, was often present, sitting in his usual seat in the cornor, a shot glass in his hand, a bottle of the finest whisky beside him. Kelster did not speak much, either, whether that might be linked to his job responsibilities with the Cumberland council in a time with war threatening, or to the disappearance of his bride so early in his marriage, Blackdrake could not say. Blackdrake had heard Lady Wallace had gone south to Cornwall for the spring.

Blackdrake would often feel his spirits lift when the pretty bar maid, Blythe would speak kindly to him. She was a pretty thing, but young and a tad frivolous, Blackdrake thought.

He finished his ale and looked at the door.

Sometimes, Lilith Wallace, Kel's sister, or the Ladylizzy, their cousin, would come to Kel's Bells. Blackdrake admired and envied Kelster Wallace his family, as he felt quite alone in the world. Blackdrake thought the Wallace women some of the most beautiful in the kingdom and he had traveled extensively before coming home to Egremont to inherit his father's firm. Inherit that yes, and its group of 'benefactors'....And truth be known, Blackdrake knew little more now about that group of elite business men who met in the upper meeting room of his office, than he did fifteen years ago, when he had taken over the office of barrister from his father!

Blackdrake sighed and took another sip of ale. He wished that Harkington, his clerk, would arrive with the work he needed. He needed something to distract him from the secretive meeting going on in his office, and at the moment, Blythe was nowhere to be seen!

When Lord Wallace overfilled the mug I had to bite my lips to keep from laughing, but it became too much when the kitten he had placed on the bar shook ale from two of his paws, before he ran to the sleeping patron and began to lick his nose!

I nearly guffawed then, but managed to keep myself in check, as Harkington came through the door, bearing a large binder, and with a bag slung over his shoulder packed tight with various journals. The look on his face was dire.

He came to the bar and gave me a look of inquiry, mixed with frustration, as if there were no words possible to form the question.

Well, sir, who are they exactly?

And how was I to answer that, for I had no idea who they were, those business men, those professionals who made up that group. Oh, I knew the affect they presented, but who they actually were? And what they were actually doing?


I didn't have a clue. And I looked at Harkington rather helplessly I suppose, for his group, these benefactors of mine, had the power to run me out of my office while they met! This arrangement had been worked out when my father was barrister and it evidently was non-negotiable. When they met in my office, I always left.

I had no idea who they were or what they did. Only that they were very powerful.

Reading the letter and holding Felix on his left arm, with Felix fast asleep, Kel strokes his tiny little head. Thinking of how far away his wife his right now saddens his heart, but he knows at least while she is there, she is safe, Chris is nearby and Kel knows that her brother would never let any harm come to her. Then it dawns on him, no matter what, from now on, his love would not get any further away from him, in fact as soon as she left Barnstaple she would always be getting closer to his arms. The feeling of dipare he has had while she has been travelling away from him starts to ease, from now on, she would be getting closer to him. Feeling his heart pick up a little he shouts out. Yes, my darling Hik will soon be on the way back to me.


As he shouts out aloud, Felix wakes up with a start and looks at Kel as if to say , be quiet, a kitten needs his sleep you know. Smiling at Felix, he picks him up gently off his arm and takes him into the back , placing him on his blanket. Mum is on her way back to us felix. Stroking him, Felix goes back to sleep, seemingly with no care in the world. Laughing, Kel returns to the bar to serve the customers.

Tapping his fingers on the table , whilst sitting in his office, Kel pondered on if there was anything he could do for Zuk. After Zuk had boarded Foxfires ship to take a look around as he could never resist investigating any thing different in town, there argument in his tavern had seemingly provoked Fox into Kidnapping Zuk. Not knowing there location at sea and knowing that Fox was an experienced Captain, Kel knew a ship could not catch up with the Awful Waffle. Realizing Zuk was at the mercy of Fox, he spoke out loud.


I hope he doesn't drop Zuk off in Norway!

Now, you might think me very forward for speaking to him so boldly, but I did not care what he thought of me. He merely gulped, and continued staring at me, his eyes bulged outward slightly as if he was on the edge of apoplexy. I had to keep from laughing, he looked so silly!
I--I am H-Harkington. Y----y-can call me Harky if y'want!He seemed to be composing himself, or making a valiant effort. I was sure then that he had little experience with ladies.
I work here, you know. I know you come here sometimes.
I continued speaking carefully to him and tried to be friendly, so he would not shy away. He seemed very awkward, and I could not help but be amused, but I wanted to discover more....
The man you meet here, the barrister.... do you work for him? What kind of work do you do?
And I smiled very sweetly and offered him the whiskey.

A message from Hikenai arrived at Kel's Bells not long before she was due to return to Egremont. She had sent word via a Brotherhood messenger, and had she realized how quickly her letter would reach Kel, she would have paid the messenger more handsomely than she had done---and she had more than compensated the man for a quick trip, as Hikenai realized he traveled during most dangerous times.



And here Hikenai hesitated, and suddenly was aghast...The thought occurred to her---if Varana, a law abiding citizen, could be killed by the army on the streets of Egremont.....and she hoped that incident had been thoroughly investigated so there was no threat of it happening again.

Tears burned the backs of my eyelids but I did not want to let my sister see my fear. I knew she had to leave for Carlisle feeling that I would be alright. It seemed the least I could do, to give her that comfort. Whilst I successfully stopped myself from weeping, my body was doing a most peculiar thing. It was impossible for me to disquise my emotions, for my body betrayed me with its shudders. I shivered as if freezing to death, and was glad for the hot spiced wine set before me.

I did not think I would see Hoban ever again. She would leave for Carlisle and certain death, I was sure of it!


Oh, Hoban, I could not bear it should anything happen to you sister! I know you must go to the border, and you know I cannot!

And it was true. I could not go to battle, I was not suited for it, it was not in my nature and my cheeks burned with shame then, as I looked upon my courageous sister.

This brief missive arrived at Kel's Bells Tavern for Kel, and Hikenai had carefully written copies addressed to him, as well, which were carried to Wallace Castle and to town hall.



After Hikenai had given the messenger three copies of this same missive, and paid him generously for his services, she watched him stride quickly down the hall of the hostel where she was resting before she continued on to Carlisle.

Hikenai closed the door of the dark little room in which she had a bed, a wash stand and basin, with a pitcher of water standing next to a pewter mug. She dropped down upon the bed, put her face in her hands, and thought of her brother Paddy, her cousin, Nick. Where were they? Why was Nick in Keswick recruiting there? He could recruit in Carlisle where they would meet the enemy. No one coming to Cumberland to fight was going to make a side trip to Keswick to join the BOB when they could roll on down the road to Carlisle!

Hikenai took even breaths, tried to calm herself, and cast about in her mind for reasons the Brotherhood armies were so long in coming. She did not want to face her worst fears, for she could not bear betrayal in any form.

She had heard it said 'all's fair in love and war'. She shook her head sadly. It certainly seemed true, but that did not make it acceptable to Hikenai. She reflected a moment on her fears, and should they be realized, what did that say for love? Familial love?

She had been so proud to be recognized as a de Peche. She had been deliriously happy to know her siblings and extended family. Now, she felt what she faced in Carlisle was some sort of family gauntlet, much as the one she had faced in Chester had been, when Chrisius and Misty left the Blood Oath Brotherhood. Have I lost my mind, through lack of faith in family, in the Brotherhood, the mission and codex of our forefathers, through fear of being outnumbered in the 11th hour? Hikenai chided herself. There was time, her Brotherhood comrades would arrive to fight the good fight at Carlisle.

There was time. They could still arrive....surely no news was good news......surely....they would come.....

Reading the letter, a tear of relief crept down Kelster's face. If only he was there with her he thought to himself. He gently moved his fingers across the words written on the parchment, making him feel as if he were closer to her. It had been such a short time since there marriage before this had all started. His thoughts turning to the future, for he was sure, in the end, the despot Capone would be beaten and Hik would be safe. There future, Wallace castle, the grounds, the horse rides through the countryside of Cumberland. There future would be bright, he knew it would. He thought of his wife and her image entered his head. Then he couldn't help but say out loud.

Damn you Capone, Damn you to Hell. Then he realized he had spoken the words and looked around the tavern to see If anyone had noticed his outburst. Shaking his head he then poured out a very, very large mug of the finest Cumberland ale and raised a toast to all in the tavern.

He had arrived somehow, unscathed, during the night. The lights of Egremont had still been glowing in windows as the the sky burned upon the horizon to the east, the citizens arising to face another day of waiting as Anto and his horde attempted with unremitting determination to seize Cumberland. He had heard of travelers being killed upon the road and having no travel permit, felt he needed to thank Jah for his luck that he was not stopped. He had come to Egremont all the way from Gloucester, and made good time too, until the fighting had begun along the border. News of the rout traveled swiftly into Lancaster and Chester. As he had come through the counties to the south of Cumberland, he was annoyed to hear the tavern talk, the waffling over whether or not to aid Cumberland or sit and wait for another attack closer to home!

He came now to Egremont, figuring to help defend the port there, as he knew it would only be a matter of time........

This time of morning, he wanted a bit of hot ale and some bread, a slice of meat and some fruit, so he trudged along in the direction of Kel's Bells and hoped it was open at this early morning hour.

Glancing at every word of Ink's letter, a smile started to appear on Kel's face. Thinking of Ink coming to Egremont after it is all over. Thinking of his brave wife, Hik, fighting in Carlisle. Thinking of all the good times they would all have after the enemy had been destroyed. Knowing that the fighting had now become bitter, the wounded and dead , mounting up on both sides, he wondered when those happy times would return. Sitting in the back room of the tavern, he hears something, far away in the distance. Like the sound of drums.

Racing outside, Kel jumps on his horse, Miss Fortune and rides hell for leather to Wallace castle. Bursting through the doors, he runs as fast as his feet can carry him, up to the very top of the battlements. Holding his hand over the top of his eyes to shield them from the early morning sun, he gazes into the distance to where the sound of the drums is coming. Looking very hard and long, he sees nothing, until, yes he thinks to himself, those are English flags. Knowing that most of England is on it's way to help and seeing the first of them arrive, he starts to do the highland fling. Yes, it will soon be all over.

Shortly before Kelster Wallace left to join his wife in Carlisle, another letter arrived at Kel's Bells in Egremont.

Blythe assisted Sir James in loading the small ale into the spring wagon. She then bought out two large baskets filled with fresh bread. The tavern baker was sister-in-law to several of the household staff at the castle, and they all felt an urgency to band together and take care of the children who had so recently come to make the castle their home. Sir James bowed to Blythe before climbing into the wagon and flipping the reins, his eyes sparkled and she thought to herself that he certainly was a clean and handsome man. Chivalrous, courtly manners, kind and patient....She returned to the front of the tavern and spied the parchment on the bar.

Blythe clutched the letter her sister Hoban had written her in one hand and her ale in the other as she joined Jane at the table. She perused the letter and then handed it to Jane to read.



Jane Townes had been sitting in the tavern composing a letter to her cousin in Wiltshire when Blythe had approached her with the letter Blythe had received from Hoban. Blythe was eager to share the letter from her sister who had fought in Carlisle. Hoban had received the letter from another young woman who lived near Kendal, and it seemed the information was making a sort of circuit, perhaps rippling in a larger and large pattern, the word spreading, gravitating outward throughout the kingdom. When Jane read Blythe's letter she asked permission to include the information in her own letter to her cousin.

Jane herself had come from Carlisle and assisted in bringing the children from the refugee camp outside Carlisle to the castle outside Egremont. Lady Hikenai Wallace had arranged with the Lady Gabrielle for the eighteen orphans to come to the Wallace estate.

Lady Sassy Marius and her brother Osbert certainly had thier hands full now, Blythe giggled to herself, as if they didn't have them full enough already with James and Su-su alone!

But with this thought, Blythe stopped and a shadow crossed her face, for Su and her mother, Susanne had left days ago, to refugee south, hoping to outdistance the invaders from the north, should they push on into all of Cumberland as well. In the short time Su and Susanne had been at Wallace Castle, it was hard not to become fond of them, Blythe thought to herself and she said a little prayer that Jah would protect the young mother who was fleeing a cruel and cold estranged husband.

I am so tired. If only there was an end to this, but I even dream about baking bread! In the space of the past twenty four hours I baked two dozen loaves of bread, gave a half dozen toddlers baths, fed porridge to six babies, worked a ten hour shift at Kels Bells and slept six hours. And now.....Jah's teeth! The rumor is Osbert's leaving town, too.

Quincey was soaked. He appeared to be drenched from the steady hissing downpour, not one hair on his head dry. He entered the tavern warily, after shaking off as much rain water as possible outside the entrance. Inside his great coat, beneath the a roll of extra parchment added to ensure dryness, he carried another letter from the Lady Hikenai Wallace.

Smiling at the last customer to leave the tavern, Kel closed the door, locked it and then rushed into the back. Quickly putting on the long black cloak and a large hat that could conceal his face, he opened the back door of the tavern very quietly and locked it behind him. This was it, he thought to himself, he would see his wife tonight or die trying. Sneaking past two guards on the gates of Carlisle seemed pretty easy, they appeared to be very drunk. Making his way towards the hills that surrounded Carlisle, under the cover of total darkness, the clouds stooping the moon from giving him away, he started to climb the hill in front of him. This seemed to be too easy, as he was thinking that very thought he heard the sound of horses hooves and dived behind a rock, just as several guards on horseback thundered past. Standing up once more, breathing a sigh of relief he carried on his way.


As he made his slowly towards Dumfries, the guards seemed to be all over the countryside, sometimes having to crawl across the floor very slowly and quietly to avoid them, he edged ever closer to just over the Scottish border. In the distance, he saw the candle light from windows in Dumfries. Just then he heard a voice cry out, I think I heard something! Kel fell to the floor and stopped breathing for what seemed like a very long time as he heard footsteps within feet of his prostate body. Nah, I didnee hear a thing, another voice said and the footsteps moved away till he could no longer hear them. With his heart pounding he once again got to his feet and walked towards the town. Slipping past the guards at the gates he looked around for the tavern His wife had opened up there. Expecting it to be closed and be able to sneak in and see his love, he was amazed to see a sign above the door saying Hik's Kels Bells and it was still open. With his heart in his mouth, he walked towards the door to enter.......

Sassy after a pretty hectic day decides she gonna have a few drinks at her brothers tavern Kels Bells and make sure all his accounts are in order
she walks into the bar and just as she is about to sit down a young lad appears before totally drenched

OOh my Jah ye must sit by the fire and warm up ye are totally soaked to the skin , I will see if i can find ye some clean clothes out back and a towel ye can change in the gentleman's toilets , I will go get them now

Sassy goes and gets the young man some clothes which should just about fit him, she takes them out to him

Here ye go now go get changed while I make you a nice cup of cocoa

The young man takes the clothes and goes to the gentleman's to get changed, Sassy goes and makes him a nice cup of cocoa, she arrives back by the fire with the drink where the young man is sat, he thanks Sassy and passes her a parchment which she takes from him and he sips his drink

Why thank you young man and ye was lucky not to get this wet please stay here as long as ye need

Ohh my Jah, but she seems in good spirits I do hope she will be able to return home soon

Sassy's face looks worried, she goes and makes herself a big glass of some fine scottish whiskey, she drinks most of it in one just leaving a wee bit at bottom of glass

This letter came to Kel's Bells, addressed to the Lady Sassy. I placed it on the back of the counter, thinking if she did not come in and and find it, later I would take it to her at the castle. Maybe if I did, I would see Cuthbert! I knew he was there tutoring the children.

Oh, Jah! Why does my face always colour and feel so hot when I think of him?

I took the letter from the Lady Sassy. I could tell she had been crying and I was concerned until I saw the letter was addressed to Hikenai. Those were happy tears I was sure!

Cuthbert might be a bit difficult to locate at the castle, but I was glad Lady Sass had asked me to see the letter got to Hikenai. I knew the messenger the Wallace's always used was even now, probably lounging in the courtyard at Wallace Castle, swapping tales with some of the stable lads! Cuthbert rarely wasted time with those lackeys, but I knew they might know where he was! I flew down the aisle in the tavern and headed straight for the door.

I will be back later, Lady Sassy! I will get this taken care of for you right away! The messenger will get this to Lady Hikenai straight away!

I had been directed by Blythe Williams, the proprietor of the Lady Hikenai Apothecary Shop to inquire if Lady Wallace might need my assistance with anything. I had gone into the apothecary shop seeking relief. I'd ridden hard all the previous evening. The tension in my neck and head was unbearable but the potion she sold me did me good. It took care of the pain and I felt thoroughly restored. Twas then Miss Williams asked upon my return trip to Keswick and beyond that I perhaps convey additional correspondence from the Lady Wallace to other family members. It is often I do such work for the Wallace family, having been employed by the lady Hikenai Wallace, year before last, for just that purpose.


The man sat down at the bar and inclined his head at the bartender. An ale was placed before him and he looked around swiftly, hoping to see the Lady Sassy Wallace herself. At the thought of approaching her himself, though, his confidence began to falter, however. This was a most sensitive issue with Lothar for he would become a bumbling idiot around certain women at times. He was afraid that Lady Sassy might be one of those women.

I opened the tavern early this morning. Cook had taken ill last night and had not been able to tidy up. Lady Hik, still on her land hunting expedition near Penrith, and Lord Kel being on patrol with the army, I took it upon myself to just send poor Cook on home and close the kitchen. Of course, now, I do regret it for she is very sick today, as well. So I have the clean up to do in addition to the cooking. And truth be known, I am a poor cook for great gatherings! Oh certainly I might prepare a bit to eat for a few around a table, but to keep the meal going all day? My confidence is shaken and I fear I must keep the kitchen closed! I hope no one orders anything but bread today! Oh Jah!

She came through the doors of the tavern laughing, carrying several bundles scooped under her chin with one arm, two rolls of bright yellow cloth taller than she was were clutched with the other arm, and in one hand she held a basket crammed with an assortment of purchases for the baby. Hikenai placed the bolts of cloth on the table before Kelster, as she allowed the bundles to tumble on top of the sunny fabric. She knelt to place her basket on the floor at his feet, quickly kissed him on the lips, her lower lip pouting somewhat as she raised her face from Kel's. Hikenai had a more solemn expression on her face than she normally wore.

Blainwolfe is back, you know.....I should like to go see her soon.... Hikenai remembered those long months ago, when she had witnessed the priestess Anna trying to wrestle a bed out of Bw's house. Hikenai thought Blainewolfe had given Anna the bed before she and Spot had left Egremont. She had hoped to prevent any further damage from being done to Bw's house, but that was unavoidable. Anna was lucky they had not pulled the house down when they hooked Drambuie up the bed frame! I know she will discover I unwittingly aided and abetted Anna! Hikenai looked questioningly at Kel. It was breaking and entering. It had been for a good cause, though, Hikenai remembered. United had needed a bed!

Hikenai forgot all about the bed and the possibility of criminal charges when the messenger arrived. He had spoken with Blythe first, but soon it was apparent it was Kel the man sought. He handed over the missive, Kelster had read it, and now handed it to Hikenai.
Go and tell the messenger the letter will be deliverd and give him ale on the house Blythe. Hikenai took the letter from Kelster and nodded to Blythe. The young woman was clearly intrigued by the letter, too, but she turned to draw the ale, as Hikenai read the message silently, but with great interest. Hik only felt a pang of conscience, her natural curiosity pushing her on to disregard the privacy of the 'mistress' to whom the letter was addressed.

Hikenai saw the messenger give Kelster the bottle of what she thought was probably Scottish whisky, and her stomach suddenly lurched a bit. She strangely did not feel like drinking hard liquor anymore, only ale. She knew her love would savor Tod's treat, though.
I hope you enjoy the bottle, my employer said that as for the timely warning to get out of town.
Hik remembered what a good friend Tod had been to them in Dumfries. He did not give Kel away, although he had recognized him immediately, he had not turned him in. Tod had even gone so far as to help Kelster fix the door in her tavern, the one that had become warped and hung back, dragging and difficult to close. The odd job had been Kel's cover. He was a handy man, he was a laborer, and no one in Scotland had been the wiser.

Hikenai kissed Kel swiftly on the cheek. You have to post it on her door, as Tod asked.....the Bw way...... And Hikenai looked at Kel, remembering their own courtship, and held her hand against his cheek. Love was still such a mystery, she thought.

Walking a little fast this morning after hearing the news that his brother, Osbert had been awarded the title the Baron of Barrow-in-Furness by the King, Kelster approached his tavern to open it up for the a day of celebration. Unlocking the door and entering the tavern, Kel smiled to himself, what a great day this was, his brother had finally got what he had deserved for so long after all his work for Cumberland. Knowing his brother would be more thrilled by the fact that the mine had finally been opened in Egremont than the title, Kel knew this was one of the main reasons his brother should be honoured today.

As he went behind the Bar to check on the barrels of ale ready for the celebration, Kel hoped his wife would turn up soon to start her preparing the food for all the customers he expected, after all, his brother was a well liked man. Kelster was starting to worry a little about his wife Hikenai still working so hard in the tavern with there baby on the way in a few short months time, but she so liked seeing the customers everyday who always said that her smile would turn the dullest of days in to a sunny one. He so loved his wife, he did not want her working so hard right now but he knew it was what she loved to do.

Having all the barrels in place Kel poured himself a large ale and said out loud as there was no one here to hear him yet. To Os, the greatest brother a man could ever have.

Hikenai was happy to have found her husband already at the tavern, and as she settled Drambuie in the stable behind the building, she stroked Miss Fortune who was already in her stall there, giving her a carrot and a quick hug. Hurrying to the tavern's kitchen door, she entered quickly, eager to start her noon day special of lark, stuffed inside a hen, stuffed inside a goose, which would be stuffed inside a peacock. This was a tasty delicacy Hik had long wished to attempt. She had all the peacock feathers cleaned and ready with which to decorate the bird once it was removed from the oven.

She quickly hung her bag and riding coat on the hook, and drew on her apron. Then, hearing a familiar voice from the front of the tavern, she smiled and advanced through the doorway.

Lord Wallace, may I refill your tankard?

Hikenai tiptoed in, smiling at Blythe and pressing her index finger to her lips. Shhhhhh...... she grinned.

Coming up behind Kelster, she placed her hands on his eyes from behind, going up on tip toe to reach him. Yet, by doing so, her tight, full stomach pressed against him, and suddenly a tiny leg thumped once, twice, and three times against the back of Kelster's thigh, as Hikenai dissolved into laughter.

So much for trying to surprise you, my love! This little one has announced his presence, Kel.....and mine, too!

Hikenai was as surprised as Kel by the baby's kick! It was as if the wee mite sensed it's father was there and wanted to make contact!

Hikenai felt herself melt into her husband's embrace. He always had such an effect on her! She smiled at his loving concern and nodded.
Don't worry my love, I am here only long enough to prepare the roasted peacock I wanted to try my hand at. Hopefully, it will make a fine main course for you dinner! Hikenai laughed, thinking should it not be palatable, they could always use it for target practice! I will go home soon enough, Kel, and curl up with my manuscripts!
The door to the tavern suddenly blew open with the wind, a man entered and quickly approached them, bearing an expectant look upon his face and holding out a letter.

Taking the letter to a nearby table after giving the man recompense for his journey, Hikenai and Kelster peered at the missive and Hik gasped. It was from Zukran Baneshield!



Hikenai and Kel stared at each other in amazement after quickly reading the letter.
Kel, how could such a thing have befallen Zukran? He just left Cumberland a few short months ago, and now.....a whole year of his life has become shrouded in a foggy haze? What has happened?

Dunn was walking into the nearest Tavern after a hard days training. He had short black hair, and tatoo's around his right eye. His eyes themselves were a Bright Blue, and he wore Silver plate armour with A gold Falcon on it. He also wore A Blue Cape and carried A silver sheild with golden falcon crest and a silver longsword. As Dunn was walking in he heard someone at the bar saying "Banesheild."

I did not know people here already know my name?

The man sat down at the bar as most of the tables and chairs were still stacked against the Side of the tavern it was still very early in the Morning, but Dunn needed a drink, he and his bad of "Outcasts" had been out hunting in the weald earlier in the week and were now cashing in their spoils on beer, wine and women.

My Name is Dunn, Dunn Banesheild. I lead a small "Band" of men. We're staying here for a few nights. Can I get a beer? And also how did you know my name?

Hikenai listened to Dunn Baneshield as he told about his life.

Rokinian Baneshield, dead these last two months!? Hikenai felt her breath catch in her throat as she remembered the man she and Zukran has freed from prison last spring. She wondered if Zukran had any idea his uncle had died. From his letter, Hikenai gathered he had no idea, and if he knew his uncle was dead, Hik doubted his present mental state held any memories for him.

You say your had a brother, who died? And Rokinian Baneshield was your uncle.....

Hikenai didn't want to give the man false hope.....but it was evident, if he was the nephew of Rokinian, he was either cousin or brother to Zukran!
She motioned for Blythe to fill another round for Dunn, Kelster and herself. Kel had continued to listen quietly, as Dunn spoke, and Hikenai knew her husband was considering the possibilities. Kelster did not appear to be suspicious of Dunn, just solemnly weighing the information they had just received.

While you are in town, Dunn, I hope you will stay in close touch with us. We are expecting a visitor soon......Hikenai's voice trailed off for a second and she shot Kelster a questioning look, for she did not want to blurt out the information. Maybe our visitor might shed more light on your family.....

Hikenai looked up as the door opened and Zukran walked in! He looked older to Hikenai, his hair was longer, he was more muscular than she remembered him, and he no longer wore an eye patch! His vision was restored, but Hikenai had no sooner given up a silent prayer of thanks to Jah for that, than he said,
"Excuse me. Umm....Hikenai, am I interupting you?. Hello stranger, I am Zukran Banesheild Pleased to meet you."
And Hikenai was alarmed because there was no hint of recognition on his face when he looked at her! She glanced at Kelster, who looked shocked as well. It was true. Zukran had amnesia!

Zukran, it is good to see you again, my friend. The last time we spoke, months ago, you were about to leave Dumfries for Carlisle. I understand you are having trouble with your memory. Please, tell us how we can help you!
As Blythe arrived at the table with the ale, Hikenai smiled at her, pleased to see Zukran in Egremont, and hopeful he would stay with them at Wallace Castle.

The musicians that would perform that evening had already arrived! As they begun to tune up, and practice a bit, Blythe was happy---- it made the tavern atmosphere so pleasurable! She knew that Lord and Lady Wallace would soon arrive with their house guests, and she worked quickly, for she knew they would be hungry. Blythe smiled to herself, for Lady Hik was always hungry now, and rightly so! It pleased Blythe to see to Hikenai's needs and anticipate them when she could.
I am so pleased you are with us, Lorena!
She smiled, and gazed at the large platter of fruit Lorena had cut up and arranged in an appetizing assortment of colors.

The tavern was stocked with all of Lord Wallace's finest, and Blythe was proud to be given such responsibility in this establishment. Seeing the musicians begin to tune up she smiled at Lorena and said, It will be a merry time for us this afternoon!

Aye, drinks for all, dear brother! she started, feeling her heart pound with excitement. She always felt at home in this tavern and her first instinct was to follow Kel and help him pour and serve the drinks. But she grinned at Kel and took a seat on her favourite chair, next to Aeffie, tipping her fingers upon the wooden table. She browsed the surroundings, feeling slightly nervous. So many things had happened inside these walls, and so much had changed with time. A single glance at Hik, with her radiant figure, you could see how she lit the whole room. Milk, sure...but it was all worth it. Lili thought some day maybe she would understand why someone would give up drinking for such a long time.
Meanwhile, she would enjoy her drinks as much as she could. Glancing at Xall and smiling sheepishly. She suddenly blushed and lowered her eyes, realizing she must have looked quite dumb with that expression on her face. But she couldn't really help it. Something had happened since that day in Carlisle, when she first met him. She often wondered if there'd been something in the ale. Or in the air.

As Xall spoke about a tavern having history and character, Kel thought about all that had happened while this tavern had been opened. The up's and downs that had faced everyone who had walked through the doors. Every person had his or her own story to tell and he had listened to all of them. Yes he thought this tavern certainly had history, but that is not what made a tavern for him. It had always been about the people, the friends and family coming together after a hard days work, talking, having fun and always making the future seem to be so bright.

Sitting down next to his family and friends he thought of his bright and happy future with them all and especially his wife and soon go be baby.


So Kel, I was thinking of moving to Eggy, if this would be okay with you fine folks up here. If and when I do I was wondering what profession might be needed up this way?

Hearing Xall talk of moving to Egremont made Kel so happy inside for then Xall would be here and so would his sister Lil.

Well almost any profession would be good Xall, but as for farmers, we are in desperate need of sheep at the moment. I can say this thought, you will not find a more enjoyable place to live anywhere else in England. I have found it to be the most friendly and welcoming town I have ever been to and I have been to a few, in England and in Scotland.

Lili noticed how well her brother and Xall seemed to be getting along and she smiled, throwing a quick glance towards Hik, who seemed to be paying attention to the same happenings. Or to Kel being his usual friendly self, for which everyone adored him.

So Kel, I was thinking of moving to eggy...

Her heart stopped and her eyes grew large, as her lips whispered a faint "Oh, my!". She had indeed told Xall how lovely Egremont was and how merry its inhabitants, and he, in turn, had told her about his wanting to find a home. But his words came as such a surprise, and a good one, above all.
As she watched him return to the table with the ale, she tried to compose herself, by no means would it have been suitable to show such emotion to a person she barely knew. Though she had the feeling that she knew him so intimately already. As if they'd been friends forever.

She returned a smile to him in thanks for the courtesy of offering her a drink, and she felt her cheeks flushed as he spoke. Thank you, Xall. I am sure it is the delicate candlelight that makes all features smoother and sweeter to the observer. She paused and raised her mug "For peace, for happiness, for family!" then took a sip and returned to Xall "I see you have been quite charmed by our stories about Eggy. I wish to congratulate you for this decision and tell you it is very good news to my ears. Our fair town deserves a good man like yourself." She smiled again, this time managing to hold back back her emotions, though she would have loved to do the happy dance right then. Thinking she would then be able to see him every day with being in the same town, she realized she had missed him.

She listened to him speak, letting his words pierce through her ears and inside her. They had such a warm resonance, a firm, yet warm tone. Lili loved the sound of it and she kept smiling as she listened. That tone seemed so familiar and made her feel safe. The same surroundings but with different company, her heart stopped inside her throath for a moment and a violent flashback made her freeze. She felt her hands cold and motionless and shut her eyes as she recognised an old forgotten feeling stirring inside her again. It seemed to stumble upon her in wild gallop, she clenched her fists under the table and swallowed hard, opening her eyes and taking a breath. She told herself she would make sure it didn't happen again. Not this time. It should be different.
She stretched her hand and leaned forward to take her glass and took a greedy gulp for courage. She was afraid, still she felt unsure, still she was afraid to allow herself a little happiness again. But maybe she was mistaken. Her thoughts ran inside her head and she took another deep breath, deciding to try and sort things out another time. She should enjoy the night and the company. Still some wounds had not yet been healed and ignoring them proved to have been the wrong decision.

She composed herself and tried another smile. She would be happy to enjoy Xall's company in Egremont, there was something about him that made her smile, in a certain way that she feared the most. She would just have to be careful not to let herself slip...and fall.
She nodded at him and answered "Aye, I did, I have not many memories about our parents, I was still very young when we lost them, but my first memories are from Egremont, the lake especially. I seem to have always had a strange fascination with that lake." She smiled " But I do think you will see why soon enough."

Os got out of the mines a bit early today, and tho' every muscle in his body felt thoroughly abused, he hobbled himself over to the tavern for a meal and a tall tankard of ale before heading back to the house. The sun was right close to going away for the day by the time he made it to town, the pigeons were coming to roost, he noticed, and the air had a feel of cool to it. As tired as he was, his steps took a bit of a quickened pace the closer he got.

Kel's Bells...quite the gathering spot lately, he mused; for some strange reason, a certain tune came to mind as he walked through the door, made him feel like dancing...

Ah, blessed relief, the fire was going full throttle, and spreading its welcome warmth through the room. Sitting by the fireplace was his sister Lil, and some gentleman he'd never seen before...Os gave a hearty hello to the two, and disappeared into the kitchen to see what was cooking; whatever it was, it made his empty stomach growl like a crazed beast. He stuck his nose into the pot and inhaled deeply...a hearty stew, now that's a fine sup on a cool night! Max passed him a bowl, and he dolloped out a man sized portion, took a loaf of bread and a pitcher of ale and three tankards, and went back to greet his sis and her friend.

"Lil! How are ya, girl? You've been scarce lately, where ya been and what ya been up to?" Os spoke. He set the food and ale on the table, and hugged his sister. "And who be your gentleman friend? I don't believe we've had the pleasure to meet."

A wide grin upon her face, Lili jumped to her feet and gave a tight hug to her brother. "I missed you, Os! Come take a seat!" She gestured towards the chair and took her own seat back, then looked to the man next to her "Xall is a good man I've had the pleasure to meet in Carlisle. He's been fighting alongside our cousin Jeal."
Reaching for her mug and cheering, she took a sip and stole another fugitive look towards Xall with the corner of her eye, slightly blushing again. She thought herself lucky that very moment. She then turned to Os again, and scanned him from head to toe "I see you've been out to the mines again. You be a hard working man, my brother! Tell me what else you've been up to?"

As she smiled waiting for his answer, the thought of Xall's words ran in her mind. He would be leaving so soon and she know she'd miss him. If only she could make him stay a little longer. But how could she dare tell him? He'd probably consider her too daring or too curious and she decided she'd better keep her mouth shut. She didn't want to scare him off after all, but she did say "I always wished to see the southern part of England, I hear it's nice and friendly, but never had the chance to. And as I've heard it is quite a long journey that way...t'would be a long time until we could share another drink" She smiled then hurried to take another sip, thinking she had after all spoken too much this time.

"Aye, sis, this rock dust has worked its way into every pore of my skin! At least it's good for takin' away the smell of fish!" I laugh. Getting off the lake and into the mines was making every muscle in my body taut, and had given my belly a renewed appetite.

I turned my attention to Xall, a mountain of a man, if there every was one. Naturally, with every man who courts one of my sisters, I had to keep a suspecting eye on him, and try to gauge his intentions. First impressions were that he was a pleasant chap...

"So, y'all are headed south, eh? How far will your travels take ye?" I ask the gentleman; "Lil's much needed at her loom back in Egremont, so I hope you don't have plans to whisk her away for very long!"

I entered the tavern, not a normal patron. Easily about four feet tall, if that even, I was but six years old. Dressed in a long sleeve tunic and brown tights, I walked in casually. My feet hurt, bad enough that my heart shaped face often wrinkled as I silently dealt with the sores. My shoes were worn through, I could feel every bump and rock in the road. My blond hair was curly, and worse--knotted bad.

With me, my belongings were a leather pouch made just for my size, and in it a couple of pieces of stale bread and a couple of pieces of gold. I limped towards the bar counter. Tired, sore and worse, lost.

I looked at the bartender behind the counter, who probably looked at me with a strange look. I pulled out my coins and looked at them. I couldn't count, but one lady had shown me how to tell if I had five. One coin for each finger. I flattened out my palm, pressed a coin to the bottom of my fingers and knew I had five.

I looked back up at the bar tender and smiled big, a genuine smile, although the tender might not of seen it, because I could barely see over the counter. I rolled to the tips of my toes and pushed my five coins at the tender."Tha's five coins." I said, with a small Scottish accent that was only really thick when I was this tired. "Do you have warm milk? Can I---Oops," I blushed, "May I please have some warm milk? Do I have enough?"

Marae pushes open the door to the Kel's Bells tavern and hopes that her friends are here since she misses them so much. She spots Kel by the bar right away, but he is busy with a little girl so she smiles and waits her turn.

Looking around she sees everyone sitting there and smiles and waves over to them.

"You two worry too much about me" she chuckled, winking at her brothers "Your sis is a big girl now, she can take care of herself, don't you agree?" She narrowed her eyes a little, posing a frown, but she burst into giggles almost an instant after. She knew where all the concerns came from, nothing was safe anymore. She might have been a fully grown woman with a sharp sword, but her brothers would always worry for her and try to protect her as much as they could. She smiled, she'd never felt in danger when in their presence, and after all, how could she?
Safe, but just like the sparkling blue eyes little girl that came in the tavern that very moment. Lilith loved children, their faces so sweet and their eyes so sincere and innocent. Yet from a distance, since she barely knew how one was supposed to care for a child or if she could ever do a good job at it. It simply seemed very difficult. The tiny fair haired creature seemed quite bright, though so very young she seemed to know how to get along. But Lilith felt one eyebrow raise, realizing she was missing a couple of parents, the little girl. She asked herself if she was lost, though at a second glance, the girl was clean and her dress was of good quality. She sure had parents who took good care of her, strange how they would let her by herself. And with a Scottish accent. For a moment she thought the girl could be in danger, after all, the war was yet to end, and knowing how grown ups could get a little crazy at times, she feared the girl might not be in the safest place.
She watched her brother go and talk to her and gave Kel a worried look. He would take care of her, Lili knew for a fact. She then turned to Xall and said, in a low tone "I would love to join you, of course if I wouldn't be a burden for you. I know Jeal is in a hurry to get back home to her house and fields and surely she would love to fly back there. I might just get lost in the landscapes and forget I have to follow." She winked and giggled, trying to ease the pressure Xall's eyes cast upon her. It was one of those enoyable pressures, but her heart needed to take a short rest from pounding madly. She smiled and sipped her ale while looking at Xall and imagining him on a large boat with a pair of pirate whiskers on that dear face of his.

Seeing Marae walk inside, she waved at her and called her, inviting her to join them for a drink. The table was big enough for everyone, after all.

The small child went darting off yelling a name. She turned to watch her, her face growing soft, and sad. Jah bless her, the poor thing all alone. Hungry out of her mind. She looked over to the man and asked for just a tad extra bread. But to wait a moment. The poor girl had turned very red in the face. She almost looked as if she would maybe cry. Phoebe slowly walked over to the girl and placed a hand on her shoulder, as if to brush away what had just happened and add comfort.

"Don't be upset." She said, softly. Then she guided her back to the counter so she could get her food and drink.

A soft hand fell on my shoulder as I blindly looked in the tables direction. I wasn't really looking at the direction of the people, but through them instead. I didn't really have outbursts like that, and my embarrassment sent me into a blank stage. Of course, I withdrew from my humiliation as Pheobe softly spoke to me. I relaxed my shoulders and let out a whoosh of air that I had been holding inside. With the release of air, my skin returned to normal, and followed Pheobe back to the bar. I looked up at her and offered her a smile. It was rare that any smile would ever be fake, and this was not a fake smile. Even through my embarrassment, I smiled at her and her kindness. Then, I half at Kelster, and then I looked at my hands. Before I apologized, Lilith had come to our sides and spoke to me.

I looked at her silently for a moment as she offered me the apple pie.

"How would you like some fresh apple pie?"

I parted my lips and looked hopeful. Apple pie. It had been since Lanark that I had anything sweet. I licked my lips and started to say yes. But my papa's voice in the back of my mind crushed it immediately. Neonea, you haven't eaten yet, young lady. You know you should eat your supper before you have any sweets. Eat your supper and you will grow strong and tall. my papas voice rang in my head. My reddish brows knitted together in a tender frustration, just as it would if he were really here aside of me telling me so. But, he wasn't there. Not really. Still, his voice was loud and clear, and I started to decline, but Lilith continued,

"Now I'll let you in on a little secret, love. 'Tis the best apple pie you'll ever taste in this town, see? Here," She handed me a plate and I watched her pour milk. "help me carry these to the table, so you can have a proper meal, what do you say?"

I smiled largely at her, brightening up as I nodded. "May I eat first though? Cause, if I eat my supper first, then I can grow up big and tall..?" Still, I had yet to tell them my name. It wasn't a thought that was currently coursing through my mind though, what was, was nice people, and food. Lots of very good smelling food.

Hikenai was returning from the back of Kel's Bells when she saw the familiar figure of Marae enter the tavern! She smiled, as she saw Lilith motion their friend to the table, and Hikenai turned to ask Blythe to please make sure that the cook sent up extra food to their table..... Perhaps some of the delicious pasties, beef stew and roasted vegetables, that had filled the huge pots over the kitchen's open fire, would taste especially good to the gathering of friends and family now seated at one of the larger tables in the tavern. The door opened, but Hikenai had her mind on Marae, and had not seen who entered the tavern, and in truth, the little blond head was far below Hikenai's eye level. Before Hikenai reached the table, as she crossed the tavern floor, Hik saw Kelster rise and go back to the bar, to converse with Blythe, Hikenai supposed, and from the corner of her eye, she saw her husband's attention fall upon some shorter figure, but Hikenai had reached her seat, oblivious of everything except Marae's presence. Hikenai was unaware the door even opened a second time for her thoughts were on Xall and Lilith, and their plans.
Neonea said,

The childlike voice rang out, and Hikenai looked about, seeing Lilith rise, and then she realized, a little blond girl was in their midst, being tended by Lilith, Kelster and an older girl, Perhaps they are sisters? Hikenai thought to herself, for she was confused to see the children in the tavern, obviously not with other adults. I have never seen either of them, despite all the children we hosted at Wallace castle, she thought, as she smiled reassuringly at the child, as Lilith led her to their table. Hikenai noted the older girl hung back at the bar, and that Kelster seemed to pause there, as well, as Lilith tended to the youngster.
Lilith said,

As she watched Lilith return quickly with a steaming bowl of stew for the little girl, and wink at the little one, Hikenai held back from talking and overwhelming the youngster, trying to catch the eye of the older child, or Kelster, so she could motion them both to return to the table. The older girl looked like she was probably very hungry as well, but Hik kept her seat, continuing to smile at the little one, whose eyes grew wide at the bowl before her. She knew Kelster would persuade the wee lass's sister to join them, and from her experience with the orphans of Cumberland, Hikenai realized sometimes these children were easily overwhelmed and self conscious if too much fuss was made over them. Hikenai smiled at the other adults at the table, at the little one in their midst, and quietly offered the little blonde a buttered roll to go with the stew. Her eyes returned again and again to the young girl at the bar and Kelster, as he lingered there.

Lilith brought me back some stew and I lit up like a new candle. I looked up at Lilith, and grinned a toothy smile, "Oh thank you!!!" I exclaimed as I grasped the spoon with my left hand and started in on my meal. Before I started I smiled about the dog comment, "Oi've never really seen a dog before. Not really. But I always wanted one. Papa said that it's just one more mouth to feed, and I never asked Jaid." I stopped to take a bite, then another, took time to swallow and spoke again, " But Alpha gave me a pony...a little one just my size and I named her Precious, cause that's just what she was, and she was really pretty. He gave her to me cause we were all travelling really, reeeeallllly far. Far, far away. Alpha was always riding away though, to play with his friends. Jaid said his friends were mean though, so she wouldn't let me ride with him no more."

I shrugged a single shoulder and took another bite of my stew, eyeing my milk. "I thought you were Jaid. Cause you kinda looked like her." Because I was just six, it was much harder for me to control my voice when I was sad, or excited, or mad. The dissapointment in my voice was obvious, and the pace of my jabber slowed down at the moment. I looked at the others at the table, and grew silent. "Oi'm sorry...papa used to tell me it's not polite to talk when I'm eating. Sometimes I forget that though. "

"On the house you say? I've never been here before." Phoebe's brow furrowed, but she put her money away. "Maybe some bread and cider please?" A silly grin came over her face. "Possibly a beer too?"

She looked around. Somebody had come and taken the girl to the table, taking no recognition of her. She shrugged. She didn't mind. She was glad the girl was hopefully in good hands.

She noticed a lady looking at her and quickly looked away. What if she was part of her fathers search party?

Phoebe turned back to the man.

Xall asked about my parents, and my smile in the midst of eating soon fell away. I looked at my stew. "I don't have a mama, she lives in the stars.. And my papa..." tears welded up in my eyes, and this time there was no blinking them away, so I wiped my dirty cheeks with my arm, taking the tears away from myself. "He left me." No one told me what happened to him. One day I woke up, and he was gone. Everything was gone. My heart ached for him harder than anything else in the entire world, and I still heard his voice in my head. In my heart I knew he was somewhere with mama. I took a long drink of milk now, it was soothing to my stomach, and to my soul, and suddenly, I remembered something.
I looked up at them at the table, puffed out my chest, lifted my chin and balled my fist, sticking my thumb out and prodding my own chest. "My name is Neonea."I boasted proudly, but it sort of came out as though I had a sudden light bulb pop open in my head.

Os had wandered off into the kitchen area to see what else was hot and edible. He'd lifted the lid to one of the pots on the stove, when Maxine came up behind him and gave him a thwack on the backside of his head.

"You go sticking your fingers into my victuals, young man, and I'll see to it that you'll never be able to grip a tankard again!" she barked. He knew she was only teasing with him, at least he hoped that she was; she carried a mean rolling pin, and wasn't afraid to use it...

"C'mon, Max, you know you're my favorite girl, and the best cook in the kingdom, after me, of course," I added, trying my best to get her goat. Man, did that bring the fire to her eyes-she raised that rolling pin and took a couple of steps toward me, and did I ever get out of her kitchen in record time!

Wow, I thought, the place is filling up with people! Time to straighten up and mind my manners...

"Marae! What a pleasant surprise!" I said as I eyed my good friend; "So nice to see you! 'Tis a good place to spend a chilly autumn evening-there's lots of gossip to be passed; make yourself at home, M'Lady! Have you met the rest of this crowd?" I asked.

Also very conspicuous amongst the throng was a young lass I had never met; naturally, the soft spot in me couldn't resist gravitating to the youngster. Squatting down beside her chair I introduced myself to her, and was charmed by the tyke's demeanor...the children are coming out of the woodwork lately, I mused...

The family was busy with their meals, and enjoying their dinner talk; fetching an empty chair from across the room, I squeezed myself into a spot at the table, and, for the most part, let the conversation swirl around me.

Marae grinned as Osbert appeared, she waved to him and then hugged him tightly when he came over the the table.

"Yeah, I thought I would drop in, I was missing you all like crazy!" She glanced around the table and said, "Yeah I believe I know everyone here."

Marae smiled again and turned her attention to the little girl, listening as she told her tale. When she had paused to drink some milk Marae asked, "How did you get down here from Lanark?" And then remembering that she had asked everyone's name earlier, she stuck out her hand to shake and said, "I'm Marae, it's very nice to meet you."

Marae smiled back at Neonea and listened to her answer, but it lessened some as she wondered how this little girl had somehow seemed to have been separated from all the people she had mentioned. She thought of asking more but didn't want to upset her, she was sure it had been painful enough when it happened.

She smiled again as Neonea spoke again. "Thank you. I like your name as well. Did you enjoy your dinner? I should be having some of that stew coming as well."

Marae laughed as Hik jumped up to go check on the food. "It's the that big of deal, Hik." she called after her. She had been more making conversation then wanting her food right that minute. She smiled and looked around the table while waiting for Hik to get back.

"So, how are the rest of you doing?"

She grinned. "Worth a try." She looked around at all the faces. And then thought back to her travels up here. Very proud of herself (for she was only thirteen) she said, "You know, I made it all the way up here from Worcester. Made it past all the wolves and such. Scary, but so much fun." She looked around, and sipped at her cider.

She glanced towards the child, still felling guilty and angry at herself for moving up next to her and completely ignoring her when she had ordered. She shook her head. She would have to apologize at some point. It was completely uncalled for. But how do you apologize to such a small kid?

She took bites of her bread and sipped her cider, deep in thought. And she remembered someone saying something about more children.

"Oh Jah. How will I survive this one?" She thought to herself. She was so uncomfortable with kids. They made her nervous the way they ran about and yelled at each other. And then when they got into arguments. She shook her head again.

Hikenai held up one finger as Marae called after her, to signify she would be back, and she hurried to the counter where Kel still talked with the young girl.

Hello! My name is Hikenai Wallace, and I see my husband has welcomed you as our newest customer! She tried to smile invitingly, for she had overheard her husband's words. Hikenai sensed the girl was on her own, and not accustomed to being beholden to anyone.
I was curious if you are related to the little girl whose already joined us? And if you would come to our table as well? We would love to have you there, no matter if you know the child or not! But even as she spoke, Hikenai realized Neonea would have already have mentioned this girl, if she were a sister, or were related, and they were traveling together. Hikenai smiled again at the girl, and then turned to Blythe with a quizzical expression and a nod to the kitchen, as if to imply 'where is the food'?
Blythe grinned, rolled her eyes, and hurried off to see if Maxine had not snuck off again into the panty with her Kendal's finest turnip whiskey!

Marae couldn't help but smile too as she watch little Neonea's face light up when she found out she would get to sleep in a bed tonight. The poor girl had had it rough and hopefully things would be looking up for her now that she had arrived in Egremont. Marae was most defiantly happier now that she was back here with all her wonderful friends.

Hikenai's voice then broke through her thoughts, asking her how her trip had been.

"It went well and yes it was uneventful at least on the road, which I am very glad for, it would have been terrible if something had happened to me. I did see some shady characters in some of the taverns, but I was sure to stay clear of them so they didn't bother me. It was a little harder leaving then I thought it would be, I had a couple of good friends it was hard to say bye too, but I 'm sure I will see them again sometime. I'll either go down there to visit or maybe they could even come up here."

She smiled and said, "Yes, I would love to have some more ale. I'm sure it is the finest, it certainly tastes that way."

Little ears can hear a long, long way. Over commotion, or out of the silence. I heard Hikenai's name, and I turned from the table and the others. I turned to see a man at the bar, trying to get the barmaid's attention. I turned back to my group, and they seemed preoccupied.

So, I slipped off the chair and with a gentle limp, for my feet still ached, I walked over to the man and tugged at the ends of his coat.

"Mister?" I looked up at him.
"Mister? I know where she's at." I said, matter-of-factly. "You want to come with me and I'll show you?" I held open my dirty, blistered hand up to him.

I looked up at him, knitting my brows together slightly confused when he made the stranger comment. I didn't understand if that was his humor, or if he was being serious. I smiled at him when he accepted my hand.

I told him my name as I lead the way back to the busy bustle of the table. I was careful not to interrupt the chatter amongst the adults, and I pointed out Hikenai.

"There she is, see?"

But I must say it is an honor to meet you all, and I am glad to be able to join you tonight, I have not slept for a number of days so a Warm bed would be alot more comforting than a warm meal in my stomach, however....I will eat before I will sleep, is there a room here I can possibly stay in, I am struggling to find any abbandoned homes on the outskirts, and so A tavern seems to be the best place for me to keep a low profile, but still be able to see the goings-on.

Osbert gets lost very easily in a roomful of people. His attention span is, how shall it be said politely, well, it's nonexistent. His mind is always in high gear, and shifting from one scheme to another in a flash. He was thinking of asking his sister-in-law for one of her herbal concoctions, but he was still very skittish of those things; the tales of Osbert and the Hik's tincture were quite well known around Cumberland. He'd been a little scatterbrained ever since that episode, and still found himself able to float in the air when there were no eyes to observe him...

He was quite surprised to see his old friend Zuk enter the tavern; last he recalled, ol' Zuk was kidnapped and being taken on a joy ride at sea. "Zuk, you old sea dog! Good to see you're still alive and well. What kind of gimmick are you working on these days?" Zuk always had a plan or two up his sleeve. It never hurts to leave home with a Plan B, or C, or more...

"One of you strong gents help me carry another table over here, so's we can all enjoy each other's company!"

Zukran and Osbert together pulled the table in line with the others, and as Zukran sat down Neonea asked another question

No Neonea, it is an expression, A Sea Dog is someone who spends time at sea, on a boat. The fact i use to wear an eye patch also kind of fitted in with that name....but you can get SeaDogs, or well fish. Cat Fish, Dog Fish, Mouse Fish, whoever found and named those animals really had very little imagination.

My Face? Look it might be to complicated to explain, but i'm not the nicest guy in the world, and i get involved in fights, and wars, and scars are my price of this. Besides my face looks alot better than it use to or atleast I think it does....

I smiled at Hikenai as she gave me my piece of pie, I licked my lips and tried to conceal the ever growing smile that was on my face.
"Thank you!" I told Hikenai, but before I could take my first bite, Zukran mentioned mermaids.

I lit up, my rhetorical question had an answer. I nearly jumped out of my seat when I looked at Zukran.

"You've seen them?! Mermaids?! Really? Are they pretty? Do they gots long hair and sing really pretty?"

I took a few bites of my apple pie and looked at Lilith, who had been the first to tell me that this place had the best ever. She wasn't lying.

"This is very, very good. Almost better than chocolate. Have you ever had chocolate? I have. Timtay used to bring it to me all the way from Spain! Wherever that is. And he hid it in a cubby hole in his tavern just for me next to my bed that was just my size. But Timtay is in the war, now. So he's not there anymore."

Zukran asked about Alpha, my eyebrows knitted together like they did when I thought real hard about things. I sucked in my lips and bit down on them a moment before I answered.

"I don't know. He is gone. Everyone is gone."

But my attention was soon taken away by Zukran talking about his blade. I looked shocked, "As tall as you?" I looked at Hikenai, as if seeing if he might be bluffing me, before I took another bite of my apple pie.

I snapped my head at Kel, my eyes growing wide with curious thought.

"Really?"

I squealed with excitement and clasped my hands together, hopping a bit in my seat.

"Oh, Really?! I can take care of baby horses! I know how, I really do!! Oh, can I ? Please? And you can call me Neo! That's O'lright with me!" I nodded as I spoke, my hands animating with excitement, my thumbs prodding at my own chest in between clasping together, as if they had a mind of their own. I almost (almost!) forgot about my apple pie for that moment.

I smiled largely up at Hikenai. The excitement coursed through me and I shivered as I finished off my milk. For that moment, I forgot I was tired, or sore. Or even lost. I was happy and glowing.

As Zukran brought the sword down the stairs, I looked at him and stood up on my chair. "Ohh!"

I gasped and looked awed at the sword. It was definitely bigger than me.

"But how do you carry it?"

Zukran returned downstairs the sword was just over Zukrans head height at around 6 foot 7, the blade was clearly constructed as two things. One side was the handle a sleek elegant Silver and gold handle, which led up to a large red ruby at the base which was held in place by the silver and gold metals which almost surronded it like tree branches. The blade was also Silver however a darker and blunter shade. There was engraved numbers and symbols on the blade itself however not even Zukran knew what they meant. Zukran was currently holding it Gem side up so his hand was just at where the Handle met the blade, however as he reached the bottom of the stairs he spun it round slighly so the blade itself did not scratch the floor holding it a few inches from the ground the Gem itself glowed behind his left shoulder, the blade inline and next to his right leg.

I Carry it? Depends on the situation. This is more of a standard stance which I can then with my right arm swing the blade itself up and use to fight. When travelling on foot I would tend to have it Gem-Side up almost like a stave, staff or large stick, but only when travelling otherwise it will damage the floor. I cannot really show you how i fight weith it, beacuse well the roofs to small, and someone may get killed....

Hikenai noted the way Neonea's eyes widened when Zukran displayed the sword. Neo had regarded the weapon quite seriously, and spoke solemnly.

Well, you shall see one tonight, Neonea! And he is the best cat in all the world! He will love you and Phoebe, and will purr and purr in happiness, at having your company!
Hikenai nodded at Blythe, who worked at the bar, but kept a steady eye on the table where the Wallace's and their friends sat. She saw Blythe remove her apron and speak briefly to the bartender. No doubt she was ordering mulled wine and warm milk to be sent up for a bedtime drink.
Miss Blythe has made up the beds upstairs. There is a room with beds for you and Phoebe, and a room across the hall for Blythe. Sir James Bland will be downstairs all night, so you need not be afraid, he is my special friend and will protect you ladies. M'lord Zukran, might spend the night here, or he may come back to Wallace Castle with us, but in any case, you will not be alone, and will be safe, dear! Tomorrow, I will have rooms ready for you and Phoebe at the castle! Tonight you look so tired, though, so you go on to bed upstairs, and be spared the cold ride back with us. Are you ready to go see your beds? Hikenai smiled encouragingly at Neonea and Phoebe. Phoebe was silently regarding them from across the table. She had finished eating, and the older girl's eyes were heavy with fatigue. Hikenai sensed that Phoebe was exhausted and quite ready to turn in for the night. Well, ladies, shall we go upstairs?

Hikenai grasped Neo's tiny hand. Though the child had told them she was six, she was as small as any four year old. Now, let's go see if we can't find that mischievous Master Felix! He is probably very tired, himself, and would love to snuggle up with you. Phoebe rose to accompany them, nodded at the group of adults, and came around the table to where Hikenai paused next to her husband.
Kelster, I will be back down directly, Hikenai murmured, as she touched Kel's warm shoulder. As the trio passed the bar, Blythe picked up a tray of mulled wine and warm milk, followed in the wake of Hik and the girls, and the group ascended the stairway to the second floor of Kel's Bells tavern. Blythe had the beds turned back, and the warm candlelight gave the room where Neo and Phoebe would sleep a very soft, homelike feeling.
Blythe, I do appreciate you staying with the girls. It is only for tonight, though. Tomorrow I hope that Neo and Phoebe will come to the castle and stay with us there for a long, long time..... As her voice trailed off, a lump rose in her throat, Hikenai thought of another little girl who had come to Wallace Castle for safety----a child she and Kelster had hoped to adopt---SuSu of Barnstaple. Now, however, Hikenai pushed the memory from her mind, for Su was safe with Father Rich in Cornwall, and all her hope of adopting the girl had faded.Here Neo, and Phoebe! There is a wash stand with warm water for your hands and face. And here is rose cream you can smooth on after you pat yourself dry. I made it myself from rose petals, and the juice of a funny plant called aloe vera.
Hikenai noticed Blythe had placed the tray of bedtime drinks on the table nearest the door, then had passed back into the darkened hallway.
She heard Blythe's footsteps quicken and then a muffled, Kitty, kitty....awww, got you now!
Then, Blythe came back from the doorway triumphantly holding Felix in her arms, upright, like a toddler! The huge black cat had already begun to purr loudly, and his long tail curled around Blythe's arm. Here is his majesty, his highness, the king of cats! Blythe giggled as Felix let out a loud 'meow' in greeting.

Later in the night, long after both children were sleeping soundly, Blythe rose to close the shutters built into the window casing inside the room where she slept. The upstairs bed chambers had shutters on both the inside and outside of the building, that firmly secured, prevented drafts from penetrating the thick leaded windowsills. The outside shutters had been left open, however to allow the rays of the morning sun to awaken her. As she swung the inside shutter closed, she thought she caught a glimpse of a dark shadow in the street below, the vague shape outlined by the flickering streaks of moonlight passing in and out of waves of darkness , as an icy wind pushed thick and angry clouds across the inky sky.

Goose bumps caused Blythe to rub her arms with both hands, but even after she returned to bed, she still felt cold.

What was that?

Tomorrow I hope that Neo and Phoebe will come to the castle and stay with us there for a long, long time.... Hikenai was amused when Neonea asked,"Are you a princess?" and she started to gaily explain about the castle, but Hikenai stopped and choked on her words, her eyes filling with tears as she observed Neonea's discomfort at washing her hands! The little one had been so long in the cold, without shelter, apparently, without solace, yet she carefully washed her face and hands. It was then that Hikenai clearly saw the weather reddened cheeks, the stiff and sore little fingers, the violet smudges of fatigue beneath those bright blue eyes that gleamed warmly beneath her heavy lids. She was exhausted. Hikenai didn't know if she could bear to leave Neonea and return to Wallace Castle for the night! Before she could speak, however, Neo saw the cat!
"Wow! Is that Felix? Is he a King, for real? Oi'll bet he is! He's so big! What's that funny noise he's making?" She was clearly excited and climbed up on the bed next to Felix, who made a bee line straight for the little girls arms. Hikenai relaxed then, somehow swallowing her tears and murmured to Neo, Of course, darling, you may hold him. The noise you hear is purring, Neonea! He does that when he is happy, and he is so happy to you are here!
Hikenai watched as Phoebe quietly washed her hands and face. The girl sipped warm milk from her mug and sat down on her own bed, nodding her head in appreciation at Hikenai and Blythe.
I am not a princess, Neonea, but I do live in a castle with my family. Tomorrow you and Phoebe will come there to stay as long as you wish! We can bring Felix with us too! Hikenai drew the covers up over Neo, tucking her snugly into the bed. Phoebe smiled and drew back the covers on her small bed, climbing in and settling back.
Yes, they would bring Felix, they would bring anything this child desired that might induce her to stay with them, to make her home with them, to allow them to care for her, forever, always. A fierce longing pierced Hikenai, her heart seemed bruised, the urgent need to spare this little one any further pain in life grew fierce within her. She would do her best to protect her, to defend her, to keep her!
"Thank you." Neonea whispered to Hikenai, her eyes already glazing over with the approach of sleep.

I came to work early, to set up the tables for the evening meals. Maxine had prepared sausages! I could hardly wait to try them with the fragrant herb and onion bread she had pulled from the oven earlier!
Egremont had so many newcomers in town, I knew they would be arriving shortly. After all, the Bells was the busiest tavern in Egremont!

A bowl of thick lentil stew before him, with fat chunks of pork swimming succulently in the broth, John grinned in contentment. He wiped his callused hands rather clumsily with a napkin Blythe offered him, wiped his mouth and smiled his broad smile. Good fare, m'lady! He smiled then and turned to survey the tavern. There will be music later, no? And dancin', lass? The musicians were entering and preparing to set up to practice.

Blythe drew up another tankard of ale and placed it before John. She went back to shelling the roasted chestnuts, wondering at how her feelings for this man had changed over the course of the past few days. Aye, she murmured, never taking her eyes from her hands. She felt herself grow a bit warm. She was surprised to find herself blushing! There was something different about John. It wasn't that he was such an old codger, for he wasn't, not really. His silly grin seemed to give him a youthful aspect she had not noticed before. When he talked to her, he seemed genuinely interested in what she had to say, very unlike many younger men her age. Sometimes they would appear to listen to her, only to be thinking all the while of something else! (Well, except for Cuthbert, and he had never appeared to think of her in any way at all! ) And Blythe knew this afternoon, despite John taking in her physical charms, had an appreciation for her intellectual ones, as well....probably more so, as he had sought her opinion on many things since they first had met.

She had to laugh a little several days later, when John Blackstone left off work at Wallace Forge and came into the tavern to eat.
M'lady Blythe, tis a pleasure to pass this mid-day here with you! As he pulled off his heavy coat, hat, and furlined gloves, Blythe was impressed with his appearance. He sat down at the bar across from her and smiled.
She noticed he had trimmed his beard and washed carefully, as well. He was as gentlemanly as ever, Blythe thought to herself, as he smiled at her, and asked for Scottish whiskey and haggis. Ah, John! A man after m'lord Wallaces' own heart, I'd say!
Lass, m'mother was a Robertson! Her own mother, a Wallace, herself! And John smiled warmly again, for he had lived his whole life in Cumbria, near Muncaster, as a matter of fact.....
I grew up eating haggis, lass! Puts hair on a man's chest it does!

Rhea said, in a crotchety voice,

Blythe heard her before she saw her. The scratchy voice, surprisingly deep and commanding, carried through the tavern, and as she looked toward the door, Blythe saw an aged woman enter, hobbling on a cane. She made straight for the fire, and turning to Blythe demanded Lady Hik, hot water, and hot mulled wine in rapid order!
Rhea shot out,

Blythe had lifted the tea kettle from the flame, but the old woman immediately anticipated Blythe's offer of tea, and the words died before they had left her lips. The cantankerous old biddie, she actually waved her cane at me, Blythe thought. Sir James entered with the woman's bags and, as he settled them on the floor beside her, met Blythe's eyes with an expression on his face that clearly begged for some of Lord Kelster's whiskey. She placed a double shot of it in a small pewter cup for Sir James, and hurried to the old woman, carrying the whiskey, hot water and hot mulled wine on a tray. Ah, mum, I see you have brought your own herbs....
But Rhea exclaimed in quick retort,

Blythe stopped, shocked into momentary silence by the old lady's abrupt answer. She handed Sir James his whiskey, then turned to the woman and said, Mum, I cannot tell her, she is not here, but she will come directly......She is usually here along this time.... Then eying the old lady's herbs, Blythe spoke up brightly,
Herbs, why, Lady Hikenai has an apothecary shop! The Lady de Bevill Apothecary Shop, here in Egremont! Indeed, she has all the necessary herbs she shall require when she proceeds with the birthing of her child.
And Blythe smiled at the old woman, feeling perhaps the interest in herbs might be something she, herself, and the woman had in common.

Rhea hrmmphed.

"She'll have all the herbs necessary in my bag here. I'd not use something from a shop. Who knows who grew it and how it was prepared? They might give me foxglove and say it was comfrey. Or just as bad, give me something dried in full sun, with all the essence leached from it!"

Rhea drank more of her mulled wine, feeling the warmth from the fire and the wine (not to mention the medicine she'd drunk and the alcohol) seep into her bones. Not only did it loosen her joints, it loosened her tongue.

"People fancying themselves knowledgeable when they hardly know a turnip from a parsnip, much less dill from fennel. Just as likely to sicken or kill someone as help them, they are. Giving rue instead of goat's rue to new mothers and killing the babies instead of bringing the milk, giving foolishness like owl skull scrapings to treat anything at all.

"And then those fancy surgeons with their cups and blades and purges! Stomach complaint? Oh, tha' must be cleaned out from top to bottom then, the surgeons would say, so they cause more of the same... People keeling over in their privies, shatting themselves to death, and for what? I'll tell thee-- for no more'n a good dose of slippery elm would have cured!

"Get herbs in a shop, indeed!"

Jah be praised! Hikenai is here! Blythe thought to herself with great relief. She had only wanted to make polite conversation with the woman, not set her off on another tangent of fussing! When Blythe mentioned the herbs, she thought it an area of common interest, yet she only seemed to annoy the old lady further!

Well, mum, here is Lady Hikenai now!

Blythe smiled, despite her faint annoyance with the old woman's brusque manner, and with bit of vague apprehension, too, she gestured toward her employer. Hikenai came waddling up from the back of the tavern with the look of genuine delight upon her face.

Jah help Hikenai, is she ever in for a shock! Blythe thought to herself. The old battleax was enough to scare the babe out of her!

Rhea looked up, her head cocking bird-like on her wattley neck as Hikenai approached. Her eyes ran over the woman's face and then down to her feet. She listened as Hik greeted her and took her hand.

Rhea gave a snort at that, nodding. She started to answer, but the woman continued on, telling her about the family she had now and the party.

"Well, now, I see tha' took after the de Bevills with thy hair. Should have been named Whitehead, they should, rather than de Bevill. But what can tha' be thinking, out and about and so close to thy time of confinement? For that matter, why are tha' not lying in already?"

Her eyes dropped to Hikenai's gravid stomach again, then back up to her face before she glanced briefly around the tavern.

"No, don't answer that. We'd be hard pressed to have a private conversation here, I wot, with all and sundry walking past. Tha' hardly resembles the sprat I remember, with thy mother bringing thee for treatment. Had any spells lately? Tell me honestly now, I pray thee, else I'll not know all I need. And if we'll be needing to travel somewhere else, best we do it soon before I get too comfortable!"

Blythe returned to work at the tavern, relieved to make her getaway from Wallace Castle. Since Rhea's arrival, she had walked on egg shells around that woman! What a sharp toothed old biddie Rhea was! On one hand, Blythe was relieved Hikenai had such a knowledgeable midwife, one well learned regarding the malady Hik suffered from------but from talking to Sir James about Rhea's actions on the trip from Beeston, Blythe felt certain she would have HAD a spell of some sort, herself, if she'd been required to deal with Rhea for an extended period of time!

Even now, she felt she needed a drink! And Blythe was not even much of a drinker! Yet, sitting down at the bar, she clasped her shot of whiskey and downed it stoutly. Rhea's tongue and brusque manner was enough to make a saint curse!

Blythe returned to the area behind the bar and took down a tankard from the shelf. She drew the ale for Sir James, placing it on the counter before him. He eyed her with a small smile playing about his lips.
Aye, I am a bit well read....she said, hoping Sir James knew she was trying not to sound overly proud, Why, as a former knight, m'lord, did you not go on a crusade to the east? I have have heard all the legends....Mayhap, you have stories as well? And she leaned toward Sir James as she said this.
In his youth, Sir James was squire to a knight who had gone on a pilgrimage to the holy land of the Christos. He had left James behind, to watch over his lands, and serve his family. When Sir James joined the Blood Oath Brotherhood, the time had never come for him to go to the Mediterranean, and it was one of his few regrets----that, and his not having found true love, nor founded a family of his own.
He answered Blythe, a bit of chagrin in his voice...
Nay, m'lady, my stories all concern my exploits in Scotland and England!
Not catching his wistful tone, Blythe went on, still thinking of saints, as well as auspicious days, and old wives tales,
D'you know anything about relics though? Saint's relics? I was thinking about such things wondering if they.....Oh! My sister Hoban always said my head was full of many useless thoughts, but wondered if Hikenai would benefit, well.....from.....
At that moment, the tavern door flew open and a blast of icy air filled the immediate area. A cloud of snow swirled into the entryway and settled on the floor before the door. The happy newcomers strode up to the bar and Blythe, preparing to draw their ale, and knew that, for now, her conversation with the Sir James was over.

He came in right behind the gentlewoman, shaking snow from his full beard and burly arms. John went straight to the bar and took a seat, nodded at Sir James and gave Blythe a smile. He was glad his work was done for the day. Ready for a drink, he had arrived at Kel's Bells in plenty of time to see the young woman back to Wallace Castle. He had an idea the party was still continuing there, and as he knew Blythe doubled as Hikenai's personal assistant and protege' he was in hopes of enjoying the atmosphere with Mistress Blythe.

John raised his eyebrow at Mistress Fallenfast. He knew her by reputation......

Jah's teeth and bones, he was hung over from drinking late into the night! Amelia Fallenfast had entered Kel's Bells tavern the night before and Sir James had sat drinking with her while the raucous music played and then night turned into a blur of laughter and noise! She was a bit high strung, the Mistress Amelia was, but she did have a way of entertaining a man! It is time for me to cut down on my drinking, he thought wearily to himself, for although Amelia did have a way about her, he could not remember just what way that was! The night was a blank after he left the tavern with her and he suspected he had blacked out the best part!

In his hand, he clutched the Lady Hikenai's missive, which he rode into Egremont to commit into safe keeping with a trusted messenger who was leaving poste haste for Wiltshire! The messenger even now was awaiting Sir James at Kel's Bells, the scene of last nights drunken debacle!

With her time grown short, for the new baby's birth, Sir James knew seeing the missive off would put Lady Hikenai's mind at ease.

The honey cakes were what the physician ordered, he thought with relish, and he popped the last of them in his mouth as he watched Martin ride off. The early morning of Egremont was slow, the villagers and merchants beginning to spill out on to the streets, the air frosty, the sun dully shone through a sky ivory white with cloud cover.

Sir James pulled himself up into the saddle and headed for Carlisle. He'd been given several days off duty, and wanted to go to the capital. Scots in town, he'd heard....one being the very judge in Galloway who'd discharged the charges against Lady Hikenai! Sir James wanted to shake his hand.
The time in Dumfries had been very hard on Hikenai, but now...he smiled. Sir James thought of the excitement at Wallace Castle this morning as Lady Hikenai went into labor with her babe. Ah, maybe his trip to Carlisle might wait a day or so, and he turned his hunter back in the direction of Wallace Castle.

I nodded happily, "Oh yes, I love to dance. Dancing makes the flowers grow! I exclaimed, happy to be anywhere. I wondered what was happening back at the castle, but I liked the tavern too. The snow was very deep, and as I took big steps to get through it, I looked up at Blythe, clutching her hand with a strange look over my face. I smiled, but it was apparent that I had no idea what she was talking about

"A ...L-yamma?"

I sing in joy of my new baby brother and sister!

Ah, 'tis better than I'd hoped! She is here, and bringing the young lass with her! John thought this, with wonder. Only an hour earlier, he had gathered up the toys, after carefully bathing and combing his shaggy head of hair, half shot with gray now, and had left the blacksmith shop to come to Kel's Bells with the intention of, hopefully, running into Blythe.

As John Blackstone sat, eating his breakfast, and the late morning crowd began to fill Kel's Bells tavern, however, the clink of tankards and tableware had not distracted him from watching the door. Now, to his great satisfaction, Blythe Williams entered, leading the little Neonea Wallace by the hand!

Sitting before him, were the stuffed squirrels wearing the tiny armor he had fashioned at Wallace Forge. As blacksmith, he was accustomed to lifting the iron ore, working with the hammers and heavy implements, as he labored to produce axes, swords, armor and tools. But this fine work, the tiny armor so delicately wrought to outfit the furry little knights, had brought him much pleasure. Someday he hoped to have children of his own, and it pleased him that, in this cruel and hard world, he could produce something that might bring a smile to the face of a child-----and that he could do something that might endear him to the heart of Blythe Williams!

He stood up as Blythe and the child approached. The look on his face one of excitement, as his countenance lit up, and joy streamed from his smile.

Neonea said to Blythe as they neared the table,

John heard the giddy sound in the little one's voice, but could not take his eyes from Blythe's face. It did seem to him that she was suddenly looking upon him in a different way!

Ah, my ladies! He said with a flourish, as they reached the table. Would you care to join me, I hope? He reached out gallantly and pulled out two chairs from the table. Then, as he smiled at Neonea, he said, You are just who I had hoped to see, for I work for your mother at Wallace Forge. My name is John Blackstone, and my little friends here need a new home! Would you like to take care of them?
And John pointed at the toy squirrels, as he winked at Blythe.
