= [ORP] Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont

Hikenai
Hikenai lay her head on Kel's shoulder for a moment. She had turned away from the bar, and felt she could at least spare this last little expression of endearment. Soon Hikenai would go to Carlisle on an errand for Osbert, and Kel would be here still, tending bar in her absence, awaiting the election results.
Then it struck Hikenai. The man at the bar.....it was the barrister, Blackdrake.

Trotting down to the market as fast as he can, so as not to leave the tavern all to Hik, Kel looks for the man selling the kittens. Spotting the perfect one, he pays the man and sets off back. Walking to a table in the tavern , he puts the kitten down on a blanket and shouts Hik over. Hik, come take a look and tell me what you think.

Hikenai
Hikenai clasped the darling kitten closely and kissed Kel, as she smiled and laughed at the same time.

He's precious, Kel! He even looks like his name is Felix! Hikenai stroked the wee little head, then held him aloft, staring him in the eyes. She remembered other kittens, Little Red, given to her in Barnstaple by Cathy and Jackbeer, and Churchill and Richileau, given her by Brother Rich.
Father Rich now, Hikenai thought to herself.

Ahhh, his eyes are dark as coal! As dark as the mines be, sometimes, Kel, and Hikenai giggled then. She didn't mind working in the mines for some reason, and often worked there all day, rushed back to the castle to scrub up in her oak tub, only to dash to Kel's Bells and draw ale and talk with their friends all night! Hikenai didn't see the incongruity of it, at all, she still reflected back on all those lonely years in the mists at Land's End. Egremont was upteen centuries from there, it seemed to Hikenai. Here she had life.

Kel, I love him already! Hikenai placed him along her forearm, and under her elbow somewhat. You know, I just said that about a mouser, well....um......because I was nervous and there was the man sitting there. But then later, I realized, he is a barrister. I wondered, do we have a barrister on retainer, dear?

Later in the afternoon, I heard Hikenai and Lord Wallace talking about placing a barrister on retainer. Oh, I did hope they would consider Blackdrake! Then maybe he might come into Kel's Bells more often and I could actually speak to him one day. He did smile at me earlier in the day, although it was only because we had heard those muffled sounds coming from the tavern storeroom. That was really quite funny as it turned out to be Hikenai and Kel, and Hikenai was so shocked to see we already had a customer, although I dare say she should be surprised since I am sure business has gone up steadily since I have come to work here!

I know why Hikenai is interested in a barrister, it's because she still hopes to adopt that little girl, and out from under her true and rightful mother, too! Sometimes I had to admit to conflicted feelings for Hikenai, for although its true she has been amazingly good to me, I can't help but wonder why her life is so fraught with intrigue at times, for in the space of the six or eight mos I have known her, she has been in the center of such violence and upheaval! During the course of it all, she managed to get married, and that is to her credit, but look at her now, preparing to go on some trip to Carlisle......
Hikenai
Hikenai couldn't help herself, she took Kel by the hand and led him through Kel's Bells tavern, away from the itching ears of Blythe, through the kitchen, where she snatched up the kitten, and continued on out the back and over to the small kitchen garden planted along side the tavern stable. Drambuie and Miss Fortune became very excited to see Kel and Hik emerge from the tavern, and thought they were going to take a ride! They began to stomp their feet and snort in annoyance when they realized that was not going to happen. Hikenai giggled for a moment, it did seem to a shame to disappoint Dram and Miss Fortune...and she drew the apples and carrots from her skirt, smiled as she did so and turned to Kel.

I think perhaps, should we not adopt Su----um....Holly, well----we could adopt another child, Kel. A barrister, like Blackdrake should be able to arrange adoptions, and well----Osbert has adopted the boys and look how well that turned out. Please darling, while I am in Carlisle, think about it. When I return we can talk.

Hikenai smiled at Kel, and gave him a quick kiss. By the look upon his face, he was surprised to have heard what she had just said.

Hikenai
Hikenai was in Carlisle on business for the family when very disappointing news reached her concerning Osbert and she and he had a falling out, the exact details of which, no one was ever certain. There was much speculation among family members and close friends, those 'in the loop' of such things. But like most incidents, most brief spats, it quickly dropped from interest and was soon relegated to the past. Hikenai, however, allowed what she deemed Osberts' 'fall from grace', to dwell upon her mind. She had a difficult time forgiving him his trespass.

17 April 1458
the home of Lady Kitsada
Kendal

My darling husband Kelster,

I hope this finds you well, and not missing me too very much, for if you feel as I do, then you are sick at heart, indeed! The next few weeks cannot go quickly enough, my love, for me to return home to Egremont and your loving arms.

I have heard the Cumberland Council has made you Captain, a better choice they could not have made, as I know you will do your duties admirably, promptly and fairly.

I am presently in Kendal with Kitsada, Kel. We are having a lovely visit and she has shown me a marvelous time! She is presently keeping an eye on Imshi's house and I was very sorry my visit coincided with Imshi's travels. I had hoped to meet the woman who did Osbert's tatoo.

I hope that all is continuing smoothly for our houseguests, Susanne and Su. I miss the child very much. I am comforted knowing you are caring for Su and her mother. This may sound strange, but taking this journey is helping me cope with the disappointment of knowing that adopting her is no longer an option. Please also give my best regards to our friends and family in Egremont. I know many of them are now on the road, as I am, and I hope you are not too lonely, darling. I do hope Lilith and Uni return soon and that when I come home as well, then I can hear all about their adventure in Scotland.

Perhaps today, or else on the morrow, I shall travel on, in the company of Reynard, a friend of Caitilin de Lusignon, and we shall hopefully make good time, traveling south, rarely stopping for long. I know we will have to be beyond the more treacherous areas of Chester before your mind is at ease. I only wish I could send you word of my safety more promptly. Please try not to worry very much about me, Kel. Only know that you are in my thoughts every minute and in my dreams each night. I cannot return home to you fast enough, my darling.
I miss you with an ache that will not go away.

Your faithful wife,
Hikenai

Reading the letter, Kel thought of his wife being so far away from him right now and he sighed. He looked around the tavern, so full of people it was but yet, it felt so empty to him, without her there, his wife. Thinking of how he missed her so very much, but also how it may not be such a good time to be in Cumberland right now, with the dark tide of war fast approaching them as it seemed to be. Sighing once again, he picked Felix up from the bar and took him in the back, putting down a saucer of cream for him and talking to the little kitten. Well Felix, I hope you are not fully grown by the time you're mother gets back.

Preston

My darling Kel,
I am missing you more than I can possibly tell you. In leaving in such a way, I deprived us both of time we could have shared, and for that I am truly sorry, Kel. I recieved a letter from Sassy today, delivered to me by one Frank Pearson, and as he is returning to Cumberland with Sassy's reply, I was thrilled to have the chance to write to you, as well, and know that you will receive my letter.
I am longing for you, although I know my decision to leave was for the best. I am consumed by thoughts of you, Kel, of us, of how the last time I kissed you goodbye, I thought I was only going to Carlisle for a few days! I made the decision to travel, Jah knows, but I wish it could have been differently.
Fortunately, there is great consolation knowing I will be with Chris and Misty, and I will send your regards to them, for I know how fond you became of them over the Christomas season.
I know you are very busy with your duties as captain and your work at the bar. I hope its helping to keep your mind off of me....off the separation.
I love you, Kel.
Hikenai
Hikenai
Hikenai made sure she sent this letter on to Egremont by way of the courier service she knew the Brotherhood had used in the past. The business had been run by a father and son, friends of the de Peche family, with many ties to the Brotherhood. Now, a great many years later, the father was elderly, and the son loathe to see his father retire. It did Hikenai's heart good to see the man and his father together. Hikenai entrusted this letter to their service and she and Reynard left town shortly thereafter.

My darling Kel,
I am now in Liverpool, and we have rested, fed and watered the horses, and plan to continue on in a while. We lost a day in Preston, for unfortunately, I felt poorly, but I am ever so much better now! In fact, we shall certainly make Chester by evening! I am anxious to have a hot bath and relax in the comfort of a room at the inn.
Please forgive me for not returning to Egremont before I traveled south. I know you would have much rather me traveled by coach, with a retinue from Wallace Castle for my protection, but this is so much faster, my darling. Please forgive me for worrying you so, but I want to journey onward as fast as I can. This is the only way I know to cope with what has happened, and I promise you, I shall return to you as quickly as I possibly can, my darling.
The weather has been in our favor, and my traveling companion is such an agreeable gentleman. We are making excellent time now, and I will send you another message when I can.
Until then know that I think of you every moment, my love, and until we are together again, I carry your memory, memories of us, along with me like sacred reminders of Jah's blessings and I am ever your faithful wife,
Hikenai Wallace

Hikenai was happy the strange ennui that had befallen her upon her departure from Carlisle had now lifted completely. Indeed, she felt a tremendous surge of energy as Drambuie flashed down the road, a dark blur against the roadside's delicate colors of spring.

Hikenai was happy. She had visited with Cuthbert in the bookstore in Beeston, and she could not wait to get news to Kelster that she had seen his young nephew and he was well. Hikenai felt better with each mile she put between herself and Cumberland. She missed Kel but she was happy, secure in his love and his plans for their future. Now, as she sat before the window of the inn, looking down upon the busy street below, she began her missive.

Stafford

My darling Kel,
I am so happy to tell you that I have arrived in Beeston, and have found the bookstore of Thomas, Osbert's friend. Just guess who I found, diligently at work there? Cuthbert! He took me on a tour of the store, and I was so impressed at his level of appreciation for the classics, as well as the more obscure manuscripts. What a well read young man! I enjoyed the afternoon and had tea with him before going back to the inn. Reynard and I were off early the next morning and reached Stafford this evening, as we rode all day. I am glad to rest Drambuie. It seems we are half way there now! I would ride every minute if it were possible, darling, just to get home sooner to you.
I love you so dearly,
Hikenai

Hmmmm.......wasn't Arwen from Beeston?

Upon reading Hik's letter, Kelster smiled to himself at how his nephew Loved books so much, loved learning so much. If only Kel had paid more attention to his studies as his brother Osbert had. But he had always been more interested in the study of fighting and drinking until his eyes first fell upon Hikenai. That was the day his life had changed for all time. Thinking of his wife, way off in Beeston, travelling further away from Cumberland, he sighed to himself, but knew the sooner she made it to Barnstaple, the sooner she would be home. To wrap his arms around her once again, to feel the touch of her soft hands on his face, just to see the smile that could turn the strongest of men into a quivering wreck, yes, she would be home. Soon his sister Lilith and United would be home again. How he longed for the day when Cumberland would be at peace again and all his family and friends could be together in Wallace castle once more, for that day would surely come, it must. Pouring Osbert a tankard of ale, he smiles at him.

Hear Os, drink up and lets not think of war till tomorrow.

Hikenai
Hikenai drew back the curtains of the window in her room, there in Birmingham, and peered out into the dim predawn light. They would travel on shortly, but first she would go down to the tavern, and have a bit of bread and fruit, perhaps a tisane. She hoped her stomach would stop it roil and queasy ache. It had to. War was coming, and this was no time for her to lessen her pace or give into any sort of weakness. She had to travel on and tend to her business, then return to Egremont, as quickly as possible. She had to be with Kel. She envisioned him now, in the chair before the great fireplace at Kel's Bells, slouched back, legs splayed, with hot spiced wine in his mug, trying to wake up, to start the morning. He had told her often enough of his habits, when she was not at his side, his boyish and bachelor ways. The ache she felt being apart from him was most acute at this hour, at the start of every day, without him......

Birmingham

Darling Kel,
I have met with more messengers from the Brotherhood, who are most kind in passing my letters further north, making this correspondence somewhat easier, in these troublesome times. I miss you more with each passing day, Kel. Fortunately, Drambuie is faring well! What an amazing horse. I am looking forward to spending more time with those Chris gave us for a wedding gift. I am sorry to have left them when I did, and how I did. I think Dram is sorry, too.....I am most sorry to have left you, my darling. We have had a good trip thus far. Please do not worry about me, Kel, and do take good care of yourself, my darling. I will be home soon.

Your most loving wife,
Hikenai

Hikenai had already written her letter. She placed it under her arm, glanced around to make sure she was about to leave nothing, then stooped over to pick up her bags from the floor. Suddenly, her stomach turned, and she made a mad dive for the chamber pot discreetly placed in the cornor. Well, last nights ale certainly did not possess the same high degree of excellence as Kel's Bells ale, and she was incredibly hung over! This would teach her to over imbibe when she really should have eaten first!

Osbert
"Aye, brother, a breath of fresh air is rare these days," I said to Kel; "the winds have blown strong, of late, and not always a good wind they be. They've swirled through the family, and try to strain us..."

I couldn't help but feel as if I were once more caught in the middle, my blood on one hand, and my bond on the other...Hikenai and I have butted heads many times in the past, and it always comes down to this...neither one willing to budge, or blink, a prolonged and suspicious silence, trifling matters being turned into barriers...

And the family...

I was serving ale to a party of six that had just arrived. Their loud raucous laughter drown out what the two lords were saying, but only heard something about war. I sighed, but I hoped not too audibly. That was all anyone talked of these days. War. As for Hikenai, I had hoped they would talk about her. I knew she had left for Barnstaple, straight from Carlisle, not taking time to return to Egremont, to have more clothes packed, or her coach prepared. And not returning to tell her new husband goodbye!!! What was the woman thinking?
There were men whom Lord Wallace would have appointed to form her retinue to accompany her, if she had only returned.......And, indeed, I had to wonder at her rash decision to leave, to worry her husband so.....and then I realized it had something to do with Osbert!
I snorted with that one! Say no more. For I, myself, had sometimes sensed the awkwardness between them, and yet, they were clearly not in love, it was not that, but the connection between them was often obvious, and often obviously frayed.

So I returned to the bar and nodded at the Lord of Lytham, took the tray of dirty dishes back to the kitchen, returned with clean ones, and began placing them on the shelves. I intentionally took my time, hoping to hear when the good Lady Hik might return. And I glanced at the Lord in such a way, I hope I conveyed to him that I did not trust him one bit, not where m'lady Hikenai was concerned!
--Blythe
Sometimes working at Kel's Bells was annoying, in that, I wore more serviceable dresses, and not the party dresses, such as the latest one I had made. Living at Wallace Castle afforded me with room and board, so it did seem entirely right I should attire myself accordingly! For instance, there were times, such as at weddings, that I should look my best, especially as I am not getting any younger, and want to make the best possible match! So I do have a care as to how I look!

Hoban, my sister, urged me to save my money, invest in food and weaponry, and prepare to defend Cumberland. She actually went so far as to tell me what kind of sword and shield I'd need, and who to ask to have them made!

Oh, Hoban, there are troops at the front to fight those Scots and besides, if I bought all that, I would never have enough money for the silks and satin material I have my eyes on for my spring and summer gowns!
