= [ORP] Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont

Hikenai

Bridgewater

Darling Kelster,
I am so close to Barnstaple, yet, was forced by exhaustion to stop for the night. Do not worry about me, however, as I have been getting my rest and sleep like a rock every night! I have had a most uneventful trip and met few people in the taverns. No one seems very sociable right now, and I suspect it is just the state of the kingdom, and the uncertainty of the days to come. I do long to return to Egremont as quickly as possible. I have kept my sword sharpened. and Drambuie well cared for. I am battle ready, my darling, should the need arise.

Before I return to Cumberland, whilst leaving Cornwall, I shall go to Bath, and perhaps travel with a retinue. Paddy told me I must speak with Aragorn. Wylde, a knight in the Brotherhood and a gentleman with whom I believe you are acquainted.

My traveling companion, Rey, left me in Gloucester. I traveled on alone, but will make every attempt to travel with a group upon my return.

I hope the work you have undertaken does not weigh too heavily upon you, my darling husband. You are such a perfectionist and so conscientious, I know you are doing an excellent job, Kel. I am so very proud of you, and the trust that is placed in you. It is rightly placed, my darling, for your integrity shines through.

I will write again when I reach Barnstaple! Snuggle Felix for me and take care of yourself, Kel. Do not drink too much, my darling, and eat plenty! I know Alice will prepare you whatever you like, please make sure you eat well, Kelster!

I love you so dearly, Kel,
Hikenai

Hikenai fell asleep on top of the bed, with her riding clothes on, she was that exhausted!

Blackdrake entered Kel's Bels and immediately felt a lessening of tension. Here he could sit alone, undisturbed, yet in the company of others. Kelster Wallace, himself, was often present, sitting in his usual seat in the cornor, a shot glass in his hand, a bottle of the finest whisky beside him. Kelster did not speak much, either, whether that might be linked to his job responsibilities with the Cumberland council in a time with war threatening, or to the disappearance of his bride so early in his marriage, Blackdrake could not say. Blackdrake had heard Lady Wallace had gone south to Cornwall for the spring.

Blackdrake would often feel his spirits lift when the pretty bar maid, Blythe would speak kindly to him. She was a pretty thing, but young and a tad frivolous, Blackdrake thought.

He finished his ale and looked at the door.

Sometimes, Lilith Wallace, Kel's sister, or the Ladylizzy, their cousin, would come to Kel's Bells. Blackdrake admired and envied Kelster Wallace his family, as he felt quite alone in the world. Blackdrake thought the Wallace women some of the most beautiful in the kingdom and he had traveled extensively before coming home to Egremont to inherit his father's firm. Inherit that yes, and its group of 'benefactors'....And truth be known, Blackdrake knew little more now about that group of elite business men who met in the upper meeting room of his office, than he did fifteen years ago, when he had taken over the office of barrister from his father!

Blackdrake sighed and took another sip of ale. He wished that Harkington, his clerk, would arrive with the work he needed. He needed something to distract him from the secretive meeting going on in his office, and at the moment, Blythe was nowhere to be seen!

Smiling, Kelster held Felix close and stroked him, then let him down on the bar. Pouring a mug of ale for Crumpets a new fellow in town, his mind started to drift. Thinking of his wife, the impending war and of all the robbers now on the roads out of Cumberland. Then jumping with a start as the ale started to overflow the mug and go all over his hand, he placed the mug of ale on the bar, wiped his hand and turned to Crump to give him the ale. Only to find Crump fast asleep with his head on the bar and Felix licking his face. Chuckling to himself, he picked up Felix, took him into the back room and gave him a saucer of cream. Well Felix, you are certainly going to be a handful when you grow up. I think Hik will have to help me keep an eye on you.

When Lord Wallace overfilled the mug I had to bite my lips to keep from laughing, but it became too much when the kitten he had placed on the bar shook ale from two of his paws, before he ran to the sleeping patron and began to lick his nose!

I nearly guffawed then, but managed to keep myself in check, as Harkington came through the door, bearing a large binder, and with a bag slung over his shoulder packed tight with various journals. The look on his face was dire.

He came to the bar and gave me a look of inquiry, mixed with frustration, as if there were no words possible to form the question.

Well, sir, who are they exactly?

And how was I to answer that, for I had no idea who they were, those business men, those professionals who made up that group. Oh, I knew the affect they presented, but who they actually were? And what they were actually doing?

I didn't have a clue. And I looked at Harkington rather helplessly I suppose, for his group, these benefactors of mine, had the power to run me out of my office while they met! This arrangement had been worked out when my father was barrister and it evidently was non-negotiable. When they met in my office, I always left.

I had no idea who they were or what they did. Only that they were very powerful.

Dearest Kel,
I do hope this finds you, and the family in Egremont, in good health and merry! Imagine my happiness to arrive in Barnstaple at my little house, and discover two pigeons awaiting Drambuie and myself! They bore letters from my darling, and I was so thrilled to hear from you directly, I cried! Silly, I know, but just knowing your dear hand and seeing it's script upon the parchment made me miss you all the more.
We are all still celebrating the marriage of Jack_beer and Catharina_w, two friends of mine. Remember, they found Little Red and brought her to me. She is 'little' no longer, but a HUGE mama cat now, feline matriarch to a fine line of mousers!
Today I had the opportunity to work for 20lbs, so that made me most happy. I supervised the butchering of some cattle.....a rather bloody job, but necessary, and profitable for me, as I had taxes to pay, as soon as I came to town! Twentyfour lbs for two fields....quite a change from Egremont, I must say. I immediately dropped the price of my fields to 300 pounds each.
When I went to the market, I noticed a mast for sale, and at a knock down price, so tonight I will sleep on it, and tomorrow, if it is still for sale and I feel inclined, I shall purchase it. It might serve as an olive branch between Osbert and myself. I remember him saying he needed one. Should he not, I imagine I could be able to sell it easily enough.
I am more determined in my resolve to fish every day when i return, and invest my money into the business venture I spoke with you about. Oh darling, I am so excited to embark upon this life with you! We have many happy days ahead of us, Kel, and Jah willing, plenty of time to achieve all our dreams.

Your loving and faithful wife,
Hikenai

Hikenai finished Kel's letter and left it on the desk. She would mail it in the morning when she went back to the de Peche family house. She was helping Misty and Chris clean it and get it in order, for them to move in. She and Kel would have their own room there, for when they came to Cornwall.

She had spent the better part of the afternoon cleaning her own small house, and getting it ready to be put on the market. Hikenai would move the rest of her things to the de Peche house before she returned to Cumberland. As she looked about her little bedroom, in her modest home, the familiar darkness soothed and calmed her. She remembered the renovations there, when Chris helped her open the upstairs, and create a loft bedroom. Su had slept safely there, when she had first come to Hikenai's as a foster child. Hik remembered the improvements she had made in the small stables in the back. There had been a small tack room added on, and a room sufficient for sleeping quarters. Winston had occupied that room before his untimely demise. Hikenai sighed remembering a good young man who had died too soon. Still, despite the sad memories, this was home, too, and Hikenai was happy to be back.

Churchill, Richileau and Little Red all stretched out languidly over her feet and legs. Hikenai could hardly move! The cats were all purring contentedly as Hikenai fell asleep, exhausted but happy, on her second evening back in Barnstaple.

Reading the letter and holding Felix on his left arm, with Felix fast asleep, Kel strokes his tiny little head. Thinking of how far away his wife his right now saddens his heart, but he knows at least while she is there, she is safe, Chris is nearby and Kel knows that her brother would never let any harm come to her. Then it dawns on him, no matter what, from now on, his love would not get any further away from him, in fact as soon as she left Barnstaple she would always be getting closer to his arms. The feeling of dipare he has had while she has been travelling away from him starts to ease, from now on, she would be getting closer to him. Feeling his heart pick up a little he shouts out. Yes, my darling Hik will soon be on the way back to me.

As he shouts out aloud, Felix wakes up with a start and looks at Kel as if to say , be quiet, a kitten needs his sleep you know. Smiling at Felix, he picks him up gently off his arm and takes him into the back , placing him on his blanket. Mum is on her way back to us felix. Stroking him, Felix goes back to sleep, seemingly with no care in the world. Laughing, Kel returns to the bar to serve the customers.

My darling,
Today I rode down by the lake to the scene of last December's winter picnic. So much has changed in our lives since that day....and we are now husband and wife! I am in Barnstaple, but Su and Zuk are in Egremont with you. How strange is that?!
After I left the lake, Drambuie and I rode up to the Church of Loki, in that lost and isolated spot. No one has been going up there, it so far back and off the more traveled paths, and the sanctuary has again fallen into disarray. I also visited Winston's grave while I was there, Kel, and wove an ever green bough into a wreath. I am enjoying my visit with my brother and sister, and my friends here in Barnstaple, but am anxious to conclude my business and start home.
I am leaving day after tomorrow, darling, and am traveling on to Bath. I will write to you there, letting you know of my plans.
Every day I miss you with an unrelenting ache, Kel. Although we are such a great distance from each other, I close my eyes and think of you, and you are right with me, my darling.
And nothing else matters.

Kel picked up his quill, to write to Hik of the news from Egremont.

My Darling Hik,

I am so pleased that from now on, you will be getting no further away from me, in fact, from now on, you will only be getting closer to my arms. This news has lifted my spirits more than you could possibly know. I so look forward to having you here with me once more, you are my rock. Felix is growing rather quickly now, from all the eating and sleeping he is doing. If only I had no care in the world, like him. Here is some rather disturbing news my love. Today a ship has tried to force it's way into Egremont, the Awful Waffle is now in our port. We will be checking it out thoughly today and I will let you know of any developments.

Once more my darling, I must tell you to be carful on the roads. The robbers seem to be everywhere, except in Cumberland at the moment. Make sure you have an escort, I could not bare it if anything happened to you. Yes I know I kept telling you this, but I just want you to be safe and come home to me well and happy. Take care Hik, I will send you more news of Egremont soon.

Kelster Wallace.

Kelster got up after writing the letter and went with some men down to the port to investigate the Awful Waffle.

Kel's letter arrived in Barnstaple toward the end of Hikenai's visit there. She was quite amazed that a ship should dock in such a manner in Egremont! Hikenai could not help but giggle as she thought about it, for she knew her friend Zukran had probably been first on the scene to investigate such an occurrence! Little did she know, Zuk had indeed gone aboard the ship, after having had heated words with the ship's captain in Kel's Bells tavern! They had apparently had words aboard the ship, and the captain, Foxfire, for reasons known only to himself and Zukran, pulled anchor!

The ship had suddenly departed and Zukran was kidnapped!

Tapping his fingers on the table , whilst sitting in his office, Kel pondered on if there was anything he could do for Zuk. After Zuk had boarded Foxfires ship to take a look around as he could never resist investigating any thing different in town, there argument in his tavern had seemingly provoked Fox into Kidnapping Zuk. Not knowing there location at sea and knowing that Fox was an experienced Captain, Kel knew a ship could not catch up with the Awful Waffle. Realizing Zuk was at the mercy of Fox, he spoke out loud.

I hope he doesn't drop Zuk off in Norway!

Hikenai stood in her room at the de Peche family manor going over all she was taking back to Egremont with her. She had her armour that she had used while in the Brotherhood, and her different weopons, Hikenai ran one smooth white finger along the sword she had received when she became a knight in the Brotherhood. How shortlived was that for her! She placed it upon the bed. There lay two iris she had picked earlier in the day, one white and one so dark it was nearly black, next to the letter she had begun to Kelster. She wished she were at Kel's Bells with him right now!

Barnstaple, Cornwall
7 May 1457

Dearest Kel,
I have an escort, so I want your mind to be put at ease, immediately dear! I have made arrangements for the last of my things to be brought to the de Peche manor, and my house in Barnstaple, on the little hill near the hackberry tree, is now officially on the market. This does make me

And here the letter paused, because Hikenai became overwhelmed with emotion and could not continue. This morning however, she was packing quickly, and could not wait to return to Egremont and her beloved!

She turned to the bed and surveyed the neat piles of garments she no longer needed and seemed too much to take, too good yet to throw away. Those were to be packed and taken to the church. Father Rich knew who might have need of them. Those things she wanted to keep were few in number, actually, mostly books and furnishings she had brought with her when she moved from Lymberlost, her small home in Lands End, to Barnstaple. Hikenai began sorting through her vast library, and knew there was no way she could transport to Egremont, all the books and manuscripts she had brought from Land's End. They had belonged to her late, first husband Thomas de Bevill, and fortunately, there was room in the de Peche library! Hikenai felt most fortunate for she was partial to her books and wanted to preserve them.

She continued with her preparations for her departure, there in her bedroom of the de Peche home. The Flower of Scotland's pipes played over and over in her mind, sweetly unbidden, yet tempting to follow and hum along with.

Hik thought to herself as she hummed, if you could not stand up to them on your own, Scotland, send them on.........we will stand with you! She could not wait for the day she would be with Kel again, and they would be ready, should the call come.

Hikenai wished she was in Kel's Bells tavern with Kel and the gang....they would all be laughing, talking, listening to music.......

And at Kel's Bell's Tavern at that particular moment.....

--Harkington
I returned to Kel's Bells after work as m' wife has gone to Appleby to stay with her sister while she is lying in. What a fearful time for the ladies expecting babies. With her gone, I came to the tavern to have a some ale with my mates.

The music was loud and with everyone laughing and talking, yelling out at some particular jest, or moment in some rowdy conversation, it was hard to hear m'self think, so taking my ale, I made my way out onto the tavern grounds where tables were still set up from all the wedding receptions held there of late.

I sat down, then looked up in surprise, as a woman sat down upon the bench next to me, the young barmaid who worked there everyday! Now she had on a clean dress, and with her hair down, and just her general appearance, I could tell she was not working this night! She smiled as she sat down, and in her hand I could see she held a small shot glass of whiskey!
--Blythe
I am Blythe, Blythe Williams.
Now, you might think me very forward for speaking to him so boldly, but I did not care what he thought of me. It seemed he was quite simple, and I hoped my interest might flatter him, and loosen his tongue. If not, the whiskey would! I smiled at him and awaited a reply. He merely gulped, and continued staring at me, his eyes bulged outward slightly as if he was on the edge of apoplexy. I had to keep from laughing, he looked so silly!
I--I am H-Harkington. Y----y-can call me Harky if y'want! He seemed to be composing himself, or making a valiant effort. I was sure then that he had little experience with ladies.
I work here, you know. I know you come here sometimes.
I continued speaking carefully to him and tried to be friendly, so he would not shy away. He seemed very awkward, and I could not help but be amused, but I wanted to discover more....
The man you meet here, the barrister.... do you work for him? What kind of work do you do?
And I smiled very sweetly and offered him the whiskey.
Here, let meoffer you a drink!
Kelster
With his sword ready by his side, his shield shining from all the cleaning It had been giving it of late, Kelster was still serving behind the bar in his tavern. Thoughts of the war ever present on his mind he tried to take everyone else's mind off these troubled times, the drinking the laughing the music. To anyone who stepped into Kels Bells, they would think there was no war, no troubles. The people of Egremont were ever ready though, for the call, the call to arms. The whole of Cumberland seemed ready to fight for there County, there lands, everything they had worked so hard for. This tide of evil that seemed to be approaching ever faster would be stopped, of that there was no doubt in Kelster Wallace's mind. It seemed every last citizen of Cumberland was prepared to either fight of help with the fight, Giving supplies and money to the cause. This above all things made him so proud of the people he called neighbours. There was just one thing missing for him, his greatest hearts desire. If only Hik were with him now, whenever she was close by his side, he felt like he could move mountains, accomplish the impossible, do anything in the world.

Knowing Hik would soon be home in Cumberland once more, lifted him. How could the evil of Anto and his lapdogs hope to compete against the love he felt for Hik, how could it compare to the love the people of Cumberland felt for there County. Thinking to himself that Anto had been beaten before he had even started this attempt to be a despot of England, Kel smiled to himself and began to daydream of when his beloved arrived back in Egremont.
