[ORP]Merryweather Fortress

Wolfmist_pendragon
Wolf calmed his gaze and relaxed once more, and in response to Charlie5 simply said a little absent-mindedly, "Good, good."
Jamie.douglas
Hamilton, Wolfmist, it would be good to have you both help with the Carlisle Port.

I am not of the Quarter Master Division, I have had a lot of dealings with them though, and run a few escorts for them. They are one well oiled machine. Finely tuned and ready for most situations. I know that they take the notes from meetings such as this and use them to further their understanding of matters, and then develop better and stronger plans and supply dumps thoughout the 3 Kingdoms.

I also9 know that we are indebted to the Pegasus Traders. They have come through time and again with supplies from our Southern Fortresses when we needed them.

Aye the Quarter Master Division under the leadership of our Chief, Francis Douglas MacGregor (Fronz) stands ever ready and prepared for all you can throw at us.
--Navigator
Do not forget lads, next time we have a lot more ships to bring into the equation. In the last NNGO war we had a scant number. Since then many more have become available, and far more people are now skilled in the art of the seas.

What is the ports' status? Have we got cannons yet?
Arien.rheged
The old man slowed as he approached the huge double layered gate doors of MerryWeather Fortress. Slowly he caught his breath from the wild ride he had just been on. Turning he noted the lathered horses and tiredness of the two riders with him. Riding up to the huge gate he withdrew his sword and used the heavy hasp to pound for entrance.

Gate Keeper:
Here Here What the noise?

Turoq:
Open the damn gate you lout. Cannot you see there be visitors here for Lord Douglas, And be Quick About it.

Upon entering, he hollered again at the gate keeper.

“Get someone to take the mounts and have rubbed down and walked a bit before watering them Then give some corn. Theyv’e done a double days work this day."

Dismounting, all three walked to the Castle Entry and knocked.

Upon entering, Turoq addressed the soldiers standing in the great entry.

“Lads, I Be Turoq of Wales, friend to Lord Douglas.

My companions have been traveling for days and are dirty and hungery. I request to be taken to the kitchen so we can eat and clean up a mite before being presented to Lord Douglas.

As they were starting off, Turoq went to a table bearing quill and parchment. He wrote out a quick letter. Folded it and handed it to one of the men.

Sir; If you would please take this to Lord Douglas

Quote:

Lord Douglas,

Aridesus, your former squire, and Dark-Eagle are with me. After eating, Dark will be continuing on, for he has duties to perform back at Raglan Castle.

Aridesus and I have acquired a substantial amount supplies which we have stored at the Brotherhood Bar and Quill in Keswick. If Charlie be here. Ask him to wait, Aridesus has business with him.

Hearing the commotion at the gate brings Bligh out of his quarters. Striding down to the Court Yard he takes in the scene.

Turoq is it? Looking the man up and down. Welcome to the Fortress. You are here as guests of the Earl and the Viscountess, please I would expect you to hold a civil tongue to our retainers, this is the Home of the Brotherhood here in the North. With a nod to the gate guards, they step down from the stance they were starting to take. Jimmie here will see to your mounts. If you like you are welcome to accompany him and his lads in seeing to their well being.

Now looking over the group Bligh takes in Aridesus. My Lord the Earl will be glad to see you Aridesus. He has need of your Council on several matters I understand.

A note is scrawled in front of him and handed to him. With a slight motion o his hand Red steps forth, takes the note and walks straight off to the Castle without a wrd spoken.

If you would like to freshen up, then please step this way to the common room off the barracks. Or I can escort you straight to the Earl up in his chambers.

Bligh stands there and looks on at Turoq awaiting the guests next move or reply.
--Martin_of_douglas_manor
Standing quietly in the wings of the Courtyard is Martin. Given notice of riders approaching Marklin sent Martin to make sure all would be in place for any late arrivin g guests. That the guests came on all hot and bothered led Martin to stepping back, allowing the Fortress Guards and their Sargent to sort the matter. He too stood awaiting the next word of the stranger to the gate.
--Anna_of_merryweather
Anna, Freddie and old Merkel stood motionless high in the battlements above the gate house. Normally on call to fend off any body coming to the Gate, tonight they had swung around and were facing down into the Court Yard where they trained and spend many hours a day. Each with their heavy war Crossbows locked and loaded, aimed squarely on the party of new comers.

Anna gave Freedie a raised eyebrow as she indicated the one wearing the cloak of a Knight of the Brotherhood, yet they stood to as the obvious leader of the group yelled and made all sorts of commotion in the Viscountesses front Court Yard.

Do these fools not know whose home they are in? she wondered.

Quietly she whispered for the other two to hold steady and not to fire until she commanded.

As events unfolded she waited patiently, holding all the cards as the Viscountess had taught her. Knowing full well an attachment of Men at Arms would be formed anbd ready to respond in moments from the barracks. What with the Earl holding his late night Council, the barracks and attached common room getting a good work out tonight.

Here comes Bligh. Straight into the heart of the matter. No fear that one, no fear at all. Watching the events unfold she takes in Blighs signal and removes her finger from the trigger house of her crossbow, but does not uncock it just yet. With her signal both Freddie and Merkel take up the same stance.

Up there in the battlements, the snow and wind whipping all sound away, they were like wraiths, giving no sound that they existed, every ready to respond, every vigilant to any situation. Justr as the Viscountess would have it! she smiled in the darkness.
Osbert

...too much, always too much...

Life comes at me like these cold flurries
, Osbert thought, as he made his way north to the gathering. Never a moment of relaxation, these days, his eyes and bones full of a tired ache, yet onward he pushed, mile after long and cold mile, until he came upon the imposing fortress.

An imposing place, this, he thought, as he carefully studied the environs...

The guards stood and blocked his entry; Osbert held up hand in greeting-
"Sirs, I come from Egremont to join in this meeting. Pray that I be allowed entry..."

They called him Morty the bear. 6 foot 7 inches. Not well edumacated, but knowledgeable in the art of the axe, shield, swrd and war horse. What more can a man want in life. Currently in the service of the Knight Hamilton. Having spent the last 5 years in the service of various Knights and Lords. He found Knight Hamilton a good man, always on the look out for a fight, ready to pay each week as agreed, and even talkative when traveling. Not one of them high an mighty types.

Tonight he found himself in the warm common room of a large Fortress way up north along the Scots border. The ale flowing, music to enjoy, and plenty of like minded poeple to enjoy the company of.

They were just enjoying a game of knife throwing. A wooden target up on the far wall, 5 lads all with their favourite knives, and all trying to out do the others with aim and technique. Much to the enjoyment of all in the room. Bets coming and going all over.

Then a sharp loud whistle split the air. Merryweather and Brotherhood troops reacted within seconds. Jokes just stopped, beers left where is, food ignored. Conversation just stopped. The locals all moved to their weapons and then formed up by the huge double doors to the common room in ranks of 4. You could see they well trained in this.

You could hear a few gnarly older ones whisper Ever prepared, ever vigilant as they lined up. A side door was opened and an Officer steped in and walked along the formed ranks to the huge doors.

It was now that I realised just how good those doors would be. They could be flung outwards and the entire rank of 4 could barrel out into the Courtyard quickly followed by each rank. No one would be held up by any bottle neck.

What ever was going on was out in the Court yard, that was clear, raised voices were making all sorts of demands of the Guards at the gate and the stable attendants. All came across as not the way things operated in this Fortress.

With the way these soldiers rapidly deployed, it was easy to see that they were well trained and skilled. You had to stretch your hearing to hear any movement from them as they awaited word from their Officer.

The minutes passed. We could hear a voice of reason calling to the loud one to calm down and wasking them questions.

As we visitors awaited knowing what would transpire, many of us took our own weapons and moved to form a 2nd tier to the Merryweather and Brotherhood forces. If our new friends were to have fight tonight they would not fight alone, that was for sure.
--Anna_of_merryweather
With a twist of her head she looked out over the battlements, a lone rider approached. Busy night tonight.

With a low whistle she let Bligh know of the approaching rider. He well understood her tone.

In the Court Yard Bligh signaled the Guard to find out who approached. On learning it was Lord Osbert, they admitted him straight away. Leading him politely around the commotion with Turoq and handing him over to care of Martin.
Max.bonner
Looking at a window of the Earls Study down into the court yard, Max takes in a tense scene unfolding as guards stand too, and horses stammer in thefalling snow as their owners stand close.

Looks like more people arriving. I see a Brotherhood cloak. Oh look, I am sure I just saw Lord Osbert come in and head straight up into the Castle.
Jamie.douglas
Lord Osbert is it. Standing.[b] Excuse me, I will go see to the Judges entry is unheeded. Jamie walks from the room and meets Lord Osbert and Martin on their way into the Castle.

Lord Osbert, thank you for coming. The Earl will be very happy you could make it in these conditions. Please Sir, if you would come with me, I will show you to the Study. Turning to Martin. Martin, hot food, hot rum for Lord Osbert, and keep it flowing good chap.

With that Jamie and Osbert walked on into the Study where they found a discussion flowing on the new Port Construction in Carlisle.

Much can be said of cannon mi'Lord. At this time we are just lucky to have a natural harbour. It will be many months of hard work to bring the footings for cannon online. We also need to secure some good barrels, or have them forged.

Consulting some numbers on a parchment.

he lay of the land and the position of this bay make this place a natural port.
Ships can dock here, but do so at their own risk.

To dig the foundations, you need 135 man-days.
You can carry out all the work in one go, or in several phases. It's as you wish.

He continues. My numbers from other such harbours of a similar size show that we have about 135 days work for 1 man, or break that down as you will with any number of people. Either way not an over night excursion.
