[ORP]Merryweather Fortress

Lordparkin
Aye Jock, reinforcements took their sweet time arriving. What with having tgo deal with issues in Chester and Lancaster on their way. We were lucky to have the 1st SAS within the walls of Carlisle. Lessons well learnt.

Listening then to the exchange between Lord Pendragon and Lord Salkeld Parkin felt the need to comment again. That Commons is nothing short of a cess pool most days. Rarely see much of value there myself. With that he sat back.

I have been monitoring Mine attendance these past weeks as I hold the fort for Sheriff TigerCub. Numbers are up, the mines are doing well. The Gold mine is seeing a good number daily. This helps our bottom line greatly. I am no expert on mines, I leave hat to Lord Arckangels, it is his "baby" after all. I do knw that if we keep up the work in the mines we will soon see massive decrease in the County Debt.

Looking around the table I would encourage as many who can to work the iron and gold mines daily. The sooner we remove that debt the faster we can get on with really invigorating the Counties economy.

Turoq: “ A sad day it is when lords and knights enter a castle and are made to stand and wait like common beggars for a bit of mutton and grog.”

Bligh was just about to answer the veteran of a hundred battles When Lord Aridesus stepped forth.

Aridesus wrote:
He was starting in again on a young man, when Ari turned to speak quietly to Bligh

“Good to see you my friend. Apologies for all this. Something is terrible wrong. I needed a cover and felt it better if Turoq led. I could that way come and go with out raising eyebrows. We slept on the coast last night and I got him in a covered shelter. I think it has over taxed him. Whithin hours of leaving for here he started grumbling about his bones. Damn man he must a hundred years old and has more battle scars than I’v seen battles. Can ye not get him out of this hall and some food. I’m thinkin it will quite him down.” “Bligh, I think I may be loosing him who raised me.”

Ari.... wrote out a quick note and handed it to Bligh.

My friend, would you see this gets to Lady Snowlynx. He glanced again at the note then folded it and as he crossed in front of Bligh, he slipped into his hand and turned to see Turoq was looking at him and. Glaring would be a better term. “Also I believe I shall accompany Turoq and Dark to get some grub.” He looked and Bligh and saw him give him a slight nod of the head and turn away. Giving orders to someone regarding there being fed and not to hassle the old man.

Lady Snowlynx:
Mi Lady, my deepest apologies for the disturbance of your home. I am in need of your assistance. Turoq is not himself and letting all know it. Not like him at all. I fear this is his last ride Mi Lady, Perhaps his last meal. If you have time can you have some one take a look. I doubt he would allow any but you.
Aridesus, Lord of Raglan Castle

He stood beside Turoq and the old man just glared at him.

My Lord, welcome to Fortress Merryweather. You know us well as we know you. Tonight we are on a heightened security level with the Council the Earl is holding.

My rooms are available for you to freshen up in. I will have hot water, and hot food brought in directly. Once you are refreshened I will take you directly to the Earls study.

A low whistle pierces the night air, looking up Bligh gets Anna's signal and ordered the gates opened.

Lord Osbert, welcome to the Fortress. Your timing is good as ever. Signaling Martin forward, he instructs Martin to escort the Judge directly to the Earls Study.

Then back to Aridesus. Lord, if you will follow me, you will find all being prepared. to your satisfaction.

As the group moves over the Bligh's room the word is spread to stand troops back down to previous levels of awareness.

After having escorted the famed Judge of Cumbria into the Castle, and handing him over to Knight Douglas, Martin made haste to the Kitchens. Here he laid a hot plate with fresh slices of meats, pumpkins, potatoes, and beans. A jug of rich hot steaming gravy. They a fresh bottle of malt and he was on his way to the Study.

By this hour the library and combined study was filling up. People mainly sat around the main table, discussing a variety of topics. All the while some would pace the room with looks of concentration, or reading notes. While others like Kyle the Younger sat in his chair, ever sliding his Dirk up and down the thickened leather gauntlet on his forearm. Not like to have that one off side with me, that is for sure! and with a shudder Martin filled drinks and served Lord Osbert a hot meal.

Lord Osbert, what do you think on the use of labour here in the County?
Osbert

"Don't worry, gents, I left me hangin' rope back home,"
I say with a slight grin to the men who first greet me. "Relax, we're all friends here, or those that aren't soon will be! Now, if you'll be so kind as to show me the way..."

My first impression was feeling like an mouse in a corn field; this place was expansive, far more so than any other dwelling I've ever seen. People rushing around at all sides, echoes reverberating from the inner rooms, I was most impressed. Members of the Blood Oath greet me, and help to ease my shy first steps. One by one, Jamie, Giles, and Mo offer me their salutations, and I am most appreciative of their welcomes. "Thanks, gents, I do feel a little out of place here, amongst those I consider masterminds, but a more willing pupil you'll never find! I'm here to learn from the ones who have made their livelihoods defending my beloved Cumberland."

I'm ushered into the Great Hall, where more familiar faces come into view. Lady Caitilin greets me, and asks of my trip, and for a second, I'm half tempted to fetch a snowball and stick it down her back...but prim and proper I must be, the shenanigans will have to wait for a later date, when matters aren't quite as intent as now...

The warmth of the heart draws me, and I squat down near the fire, hands wanting to grasp its flame, my face hurting from the blessed warmth. As the dancing flames try to hypnotise me, I catch snippets of the conversations...armies, navies, ships, ports, retinues, all topics of debate back home in Egremont. Perhaps there is something I can add to the talk, I think, and, at once, I feel as if I can offer a valid stance to my fellow Cumbrians....

Yes, Jah, long live Cumberland, this dream...

High on the battlements Anna and her crew return to the Guard House, ready to respond to the next call out.
--Morton_man_at_arms
The Officer at the head of the formation gave a low grumbled order. Within moments swords axes and shields were back in their places and beers food and jokes were taken back up as if nothing had happened. Looking around I was unsure if it was all real or some kind of drill.

Next minute a stout lad was asking if I was going to have my shot with my knife. I looked at him, all cheery faced and with a glow in his eyes. Then I looked down at the sword in my hands. Putting it down I took my knife and had my shot. Must admit not one of my better shot.s of the night, but no one seemed to mind at all.

The Blackbird patrolled the forests to the north. Never far from her Cousin the Earl, she was tasked with be on the far patrol tonight. Right in her element. Snow, Ice, Wind and a Dark Night.

Bring it on!

Wolf stood up and stretched, "well, I do apologise, but I feel my input is rather limited right now, so I shall bid you all fair well and toddle off back to my horse. See you in Carlisle soon. Blessings be."

And with that, Wolf made his way back home to Pendragon Castle.

Smaller groups of intense conversation buzzed in her ears but the fellowship that was gathered was warm and the ideas were plentiful. Cait nodded respectfully to Wolfmist as he departed. Safe journey, my friend.

Caitilin had finished the stew and warm bread and was sated for now. The discussions continued.

Viscountess, I mean you no disrespect. What I refer to is that we may not be in war, but we are far from a real peace. Well I remember the last time the NNGO and their Furious allies invaded. It took some time to get forces up from the south. If we coulod rotate some through here to help man the National Border then that takes a small pressure from the many locals who always seem to be in armies and on the wall.

I do understand your concern and it is mine as well. What you must understand is that we have always been the front line. I have been defending Cumberland in one way or another since I was old enough to pick up a sword. If we were to ask for troops to be sent, and there was no battle ensuing then it would be like the boy who cried wolf. We cannot concentrate the entire countries forces here on the border. That would leave the rest of the nation open to attack and believe me, there is intelligence that says attacks on the south are a great possibility. Shall we ask for help and then Anto attacks Barnstaple? Or Holywell? Or Plymouth or even has allies that would attack Dover in Sussex? Or should we wait until there is a clear threat to our borders?

She stood and looked to the Earl.

My Lord Douglas, I would like to hear your council on this.

Lord Pendragon had just left, and earlier Judge Osbert had arrived, now here was the Captain, the Viscountess de Lusignon speaking. Raven was not one to be impressed by titles, nor overly impressed with words. It was the actions she studied, and these people, these military leaders served Cumberland well. They were quick to act, they were ever vigilant, and they were decisive.

She entered, placed her tray of clean tankards and linen towels on the sideboard, gathered up the soiled ones, and prepared to leave the room. First, however, she searched the Earl of Aylesbury's expression, to see if there might be anything else he required, but seeing him steadily attending to the discussion at hand, Raven went on to the door. She would be nearby, in case anyone called for more food or drink. This night's conference was important to the security of Cumberland, she was sure. She would be alert, to serve them as best she could. And, in the meantime, she was saving her wages for her own sword!
Osbert

"Thank you, Martin,"
I say as a plate is set for me; "there was little tarry on the journey, and my belly's about to eat a hole clear through to my backbone!" As I savor the meal and listen to the ongoing conversation, a question is tossed my way...

Marlow said:

Quote:
Lord Osbert, what do you think on the use of labour here in the County?

"Good sir," I begin, "in my travels, I've never seen a more hardworking people than the ones in Cumberland. Opportunities abound, even to the point of jobs being too abundant in places! The day I left Egremont, seven...seven jobs!...went unfilled. Aye, the mayor and I have spent countless hours over many an ale discussing this. We have seen ranchers see a decline in their production, simply for the lack of labor, while at the same time, the wheat stores steadily accumulate, and these..." I say, as I take my fork and stab at a turnip on my plate, and hold it up, " these...Jah forsaken overproduced items sit on the market until they rot..."

I catch myself in mid sentence, lest I start to sound like a rattling old man. "Perhaps my logic is hard to understand at times, and before it begins to confuse anyone..."

"Look at our basic needs-defense, mines, food, town resources, study, production, and now, the maritimes. That's seven areas-and someone chime in if you see that I have left out any-seven areas where the labor pool must be divided. Every one of these in inextricably entwined with the other. No one here will argue that the defense of our piece of Jah's good earth should rank as top priority. With the current armies stationed throughout the county, we are on solid footing. One question that has been raised is are we sacrificing younger, less experienced, strengthwise, citizens, for our defense? If so, is it being fair to call upon them to spend their days as defenders, when they can be working, producing, building their strength for the day when that strength will be needed? I know in my heart that these young, brave individuals have made their choices willingly, and I will never question that loyalty. I fear that too many with more...experience, for lack of a better word...are becoming too soft in the seat, so to say. I leave that for you to discuss."

"Our markets, production, trade, and town resources all tie in together. Two wood towns and two fish towns we have, yet scarce is the day when more than a solitary boat can be found on Egremont's lake, and a fresh fish on its market. We weren't given the lakes and forests just so we could use them for picnic spots! How many axes are available in the county? How many boats lie on the shore? Fish and wood are our staples of trade!

"As long as I have lived in this county, the topic of trade has been widely discussed, and yet, each town still has a patchwork scheme in place. There is no coordination, no communication. It's almost as if traders pass each other on the roads, and hide their goods from each other. Oh, I know that sounds a bit extreme, but it's the only way I can describe what I see. Gone are the days of the guilds, and their good works. Has it turned into a 'dog eat dog' competition?"

"Jah, where do I begin to talk about the mines? I'm surprised Arck has a hair left on his head. If he ever decides to take a break from his job, he could become a world renowned juggler! As the winds of war were gathering last spring, one of my little voices told me that the conflict was not going to be about territory, but it was going to be about stone. Rocks. The least of our resources, to some. Now we know. The mines are the backbone of the county. The stone does not magically appear in piles outside the mines. It's backbreaking, unthankful work, but its importance is sorely misunderstood by too many. It requires a large percentage of the labor force..."
my voice trails off, as I get lost in the ever shrinking numbers...

"I do beg your pardon for my ramblings. Give me a moment to stretch my legs, and take a look see around the grounds," I say to the gathering. With one hand cradling the warm cup of rum, I take temporary leave, and hope that I haven't muddied the waters with my goings on...

Many Thanks Bliigh, This room shall be more than satisfactory.

As The door closed, Ari tossed the hooded cape he had been wearing over the low divan. He sank wearily into cushions as well. Dark Eagle, he of the gypsies, had great knowledge of the human body. He had also gotten a letter of to the lady of the castle. These two would care for Turoq.

His attention now was drawn to the reason for his being here. The entire place was in motion with people hustling and not shuffling. He thought hard of what he had seen while on his trip across the top of Wales to the coast. Back to Gallaway and across to the English Coast. He had only just crossed the border when they had turned and made a hard run for the Merry Weather Castle.

True he had seen Julius Octavious. But no armies, The many small camp around gallaway had stunk to high heaven as he got closer. He had realized these were left overs from the last battle with Cumbria.
That they had been here that long was clear by the smell of the place.
But even then, not enough of them to present any danger to Cumbria. No, he had seen nothing that could cause any alarm. Hmmm, he must be prepared for any topic,

He layed back on the divan and closed his eyes, but just for a minute. Then he must get cleaned and up to the Lord Chambers.
