[ORP]Merryweather Fortress

Baldar
Baldar had ridden from London, to reach Cumbeland, having resigned from the Embassy as Vice-Chancellor, he was glad to have ridden thru England, the quickest possible to reach Cumbria.

Finally he arrived, and tired he shouts to guards to inform Lord Patrick that Sir Baldar de Lusignon was at the gates.

Lord Osbert you speak with great wisdom. I see little to say that goes against your words. I wish that we could build on our population. The many calls to merge the County with another have often been shouted down for reasons we have all read. In one way i see this as a real shame. As much as I love Cumberland, I see us on a slow burn downwards in nearly every one of these areas you have highlighted.

With a command from Bligh the gates are opened. Giles steps forth to meet Lord Baldar. Sir, it has been a long time since we have been graced with your presence. The Earl will be most pleased to see you. Bligh has Jimmie and another attendant there to see to Lord Baldar's mount and gear. Your belongings will be taken straight to the rooms set aside for you and the Viscountess. Captain Caitilin is in with the Earl and his other guests. Sir, if you will come with me I will take you straight up to the Earls chambers.

With a word from Lord Baldar they headed into the Castle and up to the Earl's Study and Library.

With a look of awe young Keenan watches as the mighty Knight Valiant of the Brotherhood rode into the Court Yard. His presence that of one of power and authority. All day and night Captains and Commanders, Lords and Ladies have been arriving from all over the County and the Country. Yet here before him stood a man of great renown. Said to be the Royal Ambassador for many of the Regents who served England before this new king arrived. This man who had served in so many armies and battles.

14 years of age and he felt like he was all grown up. Then from out of the snow and wind rode this mighty Knight of England. Cloak flying around him, sword and shield on display, saddle bags well packed, and his horse. That mighty war horse, obviously has been riden hard and far, but pacing its front paw on the cobble stones as if ready now to race off on some dark and mysterious mission.

At a sign from Bligh, Jimmie stepped up and called Keenan to come and assist. As Keenan walked forward to help see to Lord Baldars gear and tackle, the Lord reached his mighty gloved hand and tosseled the lads hair. Keenan suddenly felt 3 foot taller.

He just knew he would happily spend an extra hour rubbing saddle soap into the Lords saddle and harnesses.

Smaller groups of intense conversation buzzed in her ears but the fellowship that was gathered was warm and the ideas were plentiful. Cait nodded respectfully to Wolfmist as he departed. Safe journey, my friend.

Caitilin had finished the stew and warm bread and was sated for now. The discussions continued.

Viscountess, I mean you no disrespect. What I refer to is that we may not be in war, but we are far from a real peace. Well I remember the last time the NNGO and their Furious allies invaded. It took some time to get forces up from the south. If we coulod rotate some through here to help man the National Border then that takes a small pressure from the many locals who always seem to be in armies and on the wall.

I do understand your concern and it is mine as well. What you must understand is that we have always been the front line. I have been defending Cumberland in one way or another since I was old enough to pick up a sword. If we were to ask for troops to be sent, and there was no battle ensuing then it would be like the boy who cried wolf. We cannot concentrate the entire countries forces here on the border. That would leave the rest of the nation open to attack and believe me, there is intelligence that says attacks on the south are a great possibility. Shall we ask for help and then Anto attacks Barnstaple? Or Holywell? Or Plymouth or even has allies that would attack Dover in Sussex? Or should we wait until there is a clear threat to our borders?

She stood and looked to the Earl.

My Lord Douglas, I would like to hear your council on this.

Cait, your words are good and honourable and I well understand where you are coming from

one point I would make on this is that successive Military Councils have agreed that the National Border is more than just a Cumbrian issue

that the entire Realm should assist in manning the border

it was as part of such an agreement which led me to bringing many Brotherhood forces back to serve on the border after being here for two state emergencies
basically apart from a few supply runs and for going to Barnstaple to collect my belongings I and several others never left and this is now our home well and truely

I must say I would liek to see 2 or 3 retinues from the other Counties coming to serve in the Mountaineers border army for a period of 4 weeks, and then being rotated out for another group of retinues

in that time I would see them serve in the army for 2 weeks and be fed 1 gold and 1 bread per day and then spend the other 2 weeks in the Carlisle mines or lake
this way the army is well manned
and the mines well worked
and we have troops available in case of crisis

and it takes pressure off the locals who time and again have to stand the wall

some for months on end

I look at my friend Lord Gregarious
he has served time and time again in leading armies, providing points for armies or serving in armies
this is a thankless task
takes up massive amounts of time
and does not allow the General or troops to gain any experience in stdies or farms or mines etc

then I look at the troopers

they slog at gaining strength and weapons
none of that comes cheap as we all know
and then they stand idle on the wall
watching neighbours farming, mining fishing etc

many times in the moment of crisis we see farmers down tools and pick up swords, axes and staffs
shields at the ready

with a few strong retinues from the south our lads and lasses to earn much needed gold to buy more meat to build up strength and weapons etc

lastly, this is a National Border as much as a County border

if we are truely a Nation then the other Counties could surely spare a few lads to man the wall

every time we have a strong wall we have no issue with Scotland or any other force

as soon as we drop our guard forces that look upon us with envy pounce

never forget they are prepared in many ways, and it takes very little time for them to fill their army(ies) and hit us hard

while on the other hand it takes us a long time to get troops up from the South to help us

where as if we had troops already here in service, like we have with Winstanley of Lancaster etc, then we only need rush locals into help fill our armies

Bidding Lord Pendragon goodbye, Jibbs turns and enjoys the retort of Vscountess Caitilin. Then before he can add anything to that discussion he takes in all Lord Osbert is saying.

Lord Osbert, you summarize the situation quite well. Ah to have 100 extra bodies for our mines and all the other projects. I look at Carlisle and wish for such a work force. People who could be in the mines daily, building up their strength as needed, developing farms, training with the Mountaineers part time. Then in times of crisis filling our armies.

I know my dreams are quite out of control, but there they are for all to see. With such a force in each of our towns we would be ale to with stand any confrontation, have a wonderful system, and have markets that are flourishing with an abundance of produce.

Could it be that the only way for such a work force is to merge........... but I digress.

Bligh looks on at Keenan and his enthusiasm with a gleam in his eye. Good to see the lad has a real hero to worship. Now lads, see that Lord Baldar's horse and gear is stowed and seen to correctly. I will be along soon to inspect your work.

Turning away he motions Red over. Take 4 men, and scout the south road for 2 miles to the marker. Then ride along Duffers lane to the Miller's barn. Check all is well there. He will be keeping a late night vigil on the Earl's request. From there head along Tower Road and once you hit the MacIntyre Bridge head back here. Red, this a cold dark and snow swept night. Unless you have need stay to the roads and lanes. Do not rush. If I have not seen or heard from you by 4am I will release a patrol south and another west to look for you. If you have issue, you have your bells, unleash them and ring them loud and clear. Even in this wind we should hear them. At worst you will have friends with you by 5am at the latest.

Ever Prepared old mate, ever Vigilant.

Bligh looks around in the hope he has all things covered. Thinking on what Captain John will say when he returns with the Viscountess Snowlynx.

On the command of Red the lads all formed up. Bligh came over and inspected them. Then they rode out on the mission as specified by Commander Bligh. His axe sharpened to a blade gleam, his shield hung from his pommel, his cloak tight around his chest, Glen rode with his mates proud and alert.

Waking to the sound of horse hoofs outside, he rose. He walked to the small window that looked down into the court yard, There he saw 5 mounted riders leaving through the gate.

Turning, he spied the water and other items left for him to clean up with. Hurriedly he took care of personal matters. Brushed out his Knightly Cape and ran a well use piece of sheep hide over his metal ware and blade. The result was a lustrous shine to all.

Pleased with he appearance he walk to the door and entered a hallway. Now where was he? He heard noise coming from around the corner, down the hall. He stepped off a brisk pace to locate a guide to Lord Padriac's Hall.

From her perch in the forest she watches Lord Baldar fly his mount along the valley floor towards the Fortress. Jah's speed my Lord Baldar, Jah's speed to you.

Seeing him make the Fortress gates she turns her own Mount back along her random patrol of the northern approaches of the valley through the forest of "Redeemed Hope" as she likes to call it.
Bluedante
Coming towards the Hadrian Wall from the north the retinue of Pegasus Traders new they were close to their destination of the Fortress Mereweather. The snow was wild tonight, each of the riders in heavy cloaks, scarves and rugs, belted to keep what warmth they had within. On the last stop, some hour past they had shared a nice bottle of malted whiskey mixed with heather and herbs. That put a kick in their bellies and a renewed gleam to continue on to the make the Fortress this night regardless.

Crossing into the valley they new they were being watched, this being Douglas land, no matter who's border lay where. Yet they rode on, knowing both the Douglas Brotherhood passwords if stopped. Knowing the Brotherhood and the Guard of Fortress Merryweather, it was quite likely they could find a fully armed patrol at any moment.

A break in the storm and they could make out the distant watch fires upon the battlements of the Fortress. Onwards they rode. Hot meals, roaring fires, friends, and dry clothes awaited.

Eventually the made the drawbridge, and found the gates well secured with it being so late. When the eye of the needle popped open and a guard came out the passwords were given. A low whistle passed up above in the darkness and the gates swung open.

Riding into the Court Yard the 8 of them slowly but happily dismounted and greeted various people who stepped forth to assist them.

Here in the Court Yard fires raged in set pits, which even in the snowy night brough warmth to the cold bones of the riders.

Commander Bligh of the Mereweather Fortress Guard stepped out of the Common Room and walked over. Greeting several of the Pegasus Trader that he knew from previous visits. Dan walked over and clasps arms with Bligh. I see you have a party going on over in that ar of yours lad. With that the two friends had a good laugh.

After a quick chat and then seeing to their horses the Traders moved off in various directions. Dan went off up into the Castle to see his partner Charlie of Keswick, and pay his respects to the Earl. Daltrey swore off such a visit at this hour, instead intent upon a few strong ales and finding out a bit more of the party in the Common Room, while Packer went off preferring to spend some time looking after his horse, who seemed to have a slight limp after slipping on some black ice in the last miles.

One of the house ads stepped forth at Bligh's signal and led Dan up into the Castle. When he reached the Library door he stopped and checked his jumper in the hall mirror. Not a man of vanity, he was yet humbled by the grandeur of what he considered a palace. As he walked through the entrance of the Castle proper he could not help but look in on the opened doors to the dining room. All set out with silver and crystal, proper plates laid out on sideboards. Paintings of older Castles and beautiful women resembling the Viscountess Snowlynx upon the walls.

With his clothes all squared away he entered the library and sudy to be met with a large gathering of Lords and Ladies from all over the County and beyond.

Greeting my Lord Earl, My Lords, ladies. Please excuse my arriving at your home so late in the night my Lord Douglas. I see you have many guests, I will nt sta, but leave you to your meeting. If by your leave, may I have a work with the Baron of Salkeld?
--Grey_the_pegasus_trader
Tiredness seemed to be an occupational risk as part of the Pegasus Traders. Long rides and great speed are the only way Bluedante likes to ride. If he can get an extra few miles out of day then you ride another few miles. Tonight they rode longer and harder than most. The leader had a goal of making the Fortress and was determined. He had a fire in his bones that even the storm could not get into.

That he knew the roads and lanes so well even in the dark came as no surprise. Dan was a well traveled man by all accounts not that he spoke much. He was not high and mighty just quiet.

The Fortress was alive with people and music, fires raged and a warm glow came on the retinue as they rode in. With in 30 minutes the horses were stabled and they had a spot in the Common Room, enjoying hot meats, vegetables and freshly baked breads and jug after jug of mulled wines and mead.

A knife throwing contest was under way. A few of them had real skill. 1 of them, a real ugly cussing bloke, was rotten drunk, hardly could stand. When he lined up to throw his knife you could see people flinch as if unsure where it would go. Each time I watched his blade qas a blur fly into the target as if from the straightest throwing arm.

Aragorn sat on the chair in the hidden room that Lord paddy had given him. He had wanted to listen, unheeded and with the knoledge nothing said was tempered becouse he was present at this conferance. As he sat he learned a lot.

The time went by and poeple came and went, finaly he decided to do as instructed by lord paddy when he was ready to come out and pull the big lever. Paddy had assured him it would start hard but become easier and not to be suprised.

He pulled ont he lever it was not just quite hard but such that a boy may not have had the strenth to get it started then as he pulled there was a scraping noise and the floor started to move. The wall he had been looking at with the two peep holes and the sound amplification thing, he did not understand how it worked, well that wall and he with it started to spin.

For the people in the room it must have been quite a shock as a book case began to swivel and there was the Duke of Cumbria sat on a plush leather chair and the book case was a wall to match the rest of the room.

"Excuse me my lords and ladies, please excuse my erm unorthadox appearance, Lord paddy was very graciouce to me in showing me one of his little secrets

Please do carry on forget I am here again, but I was getting a tad cold in there"
He laughed a little and then smiled to paddy.
