[ORP]Merryweather Fortress

Snowlynx
Snowlynx returns to the court yard with her light armour on, staff in hand. She had waited until her men had settled down from the commotion of all of the visitors and the courtyard cleared some and the courtyard was prepared for morning exercises.

Word traveled through the men, no doubt from Johnny bragging to them that Lady Snow was going to start his training, today. The guards would slap Johnny on the back congratulating him, while chuckling amongst themselves, knowing full well, how one's first training session can be quite an experience.

Snowlynx finds Johnny eagerly helping set up things.
She motions for him to come over and hands him one of her old chain mail vest, "Here you go, put this on. It is yours, now." Johnny smiles like a cat that just swallowed a canary, excitement filling his eyes.

Snow smiles and chuckles, as she watches him adjust the vest, listening to his mumbles about the weight of it. "That weighs only but 5 pounds, nothing in comparison to a full armor knights equipment, that can weigh 50 pounds. Get use to the weight, eventually it will feel a part of you, and you will feel something is missing without it. It could save your life one day."

A guard brings over her staff and hands it to her, "Now, why don't you show me some of the moves you know. We will go on from there."

Johnny goes through the basics that he had been practicing from observing the soldiers spars. Every since he could remember, since he was a kid, him and his friends had played soldiers with sticks as staffs or swords, having battles and fights.

He began doing jabs, sweeps, and twirling around in different stances demonstating things he knew and a few he made up with a combination of them.

He starts repeating some of it and stops,"Snow, I know the basic of da staff, I can defen myself wit it. I want ta be a warrior, a soldier. Any average man knows all dis stuff." He holds his staff up for emphasis.

"I want to travel, defend England, kill the bad guys. Der is plenty of soldiers around wit swords to fight, what good will I be wit just a staff."
Snowlynx
Snow trying to remember he has much to learn, smiles, "To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of your life. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."

"In the heat of battle, you have no one to rely on but, yourself...many times, there are no soldiers or forces to call when you are outnumbered or in trouble. They will have their own situations to contend with. You can rarely back down from a fight. If you get hurt, you have to ignore the pain and do the best you can. There is no referee to stop the match, if you cannot defend yourself."

Snowlynx raises her staff to him, "Now defend yourself."

She gives him some strikes to defend and slowly increases the difficulty to defend them.

Now it was finally starting to get interesting. He was having fun, then it was becoming increasenly harder to block Snow's moves. She moved fast. Her moves had no pattern. He started sweating, and started to breath heavier.

"uggh" Johnny lands on his behind from a sweep to his feet. He looks up at Snow stunned, only to see a mock jab to his face, stop only inches away from his eye.

He gets back up they begin again.

Many times, he ends up with what would have been grave injuries, if the strike would have been followed through.

After, what seemed only but a few minutes, of him being killed many, many times they took a break. He was out of breath, sweating, and very thirsty. He realized that they had been sparring for over an hour.

"Snow...thank you. I guess, I do have a lot ta learn, yet." He chuckles at himself, "I am taller and stronger den you and I am the one dead a million times, drippin wet, and out of breaf. And you are barely sweatin."
Snowlynx
Snowlynx smiles, "You are welcome. Yes, continuous improvement, we all do each day. You shall learn. I have complete confidence in you."

They chat as they watch others spar and hone their skills.

"As I hope you realize now, you don't want to mess with someone who is trained in staff fighting. A properly wielded staff can deliver strikes that sweep, glide, jab, and crush skulls. If you have little skill or nothing with which to block a twirling staff, the outcome of the battle is almost decidedly in the staff fighter's favor."

"Whether your opponent throws a punch or a kick at you, you can use the staff to block or parry virtually any strike. If you're unfortunate enough to get caught in a hold, you can even use the staff to break out of it."

Snowlynx smiles, "After you practice for a few days, we will get into some of the mental aspects of self-defense and some of the ways to manipulate your opponent."

A watching guard that seems to have gained an attachment to Johnny helps him up.

Johnny winches a little, "Owww, I think I have ten bruises on ma rump." He rubs his sore behind.
The guard laughs.

He laughs, "Dat would be great, Snow...I think..." As he holds his rump.

He nods to Snow, "Danks Snow, I think I am going to go soak in the cold river for a while." He walks away looking tired and sore.

The guard lets out a roaring laugh, slaps Johnny on the back almost knocking him over.
"Come on young lad, I will walk with you."
Leana
Tap..Tap..

The noise grated over her ear drums like a rock fired at a windshield on the high way. She groaned, turning away from the noise.

Tap...Tap..Tap..

Cursing, she grabbed hold of the nearest object, intending to throw it at the bird pecking at the window sill...until she realized that the nearest object was a human arm. Her eyes snapped open to see a trousered leg no more than an inch from her face. Her eyes followed the leg up to a torso, then a lopsided head lolling rather uncomfortably against the headboard.

Lea slipped quietly from the bed, careful not to wake him. Instead, she guided his languid form down to rest more comfortably against her pillow, then covered him with a blanket. He looked like he could do with the rest...She took an extra glance at him and the calm, unguarded expression that came with a deep sleep. Why had he stayed with her?

She remembered bits and pieces of the night's happenings..there was dinner, and then a few too many drinks..then she'd fallen and he'd helped her to her bed. Her hand found the goose egg on her forhead where she'd hit the tray, and she winced.

It confused her nonetheless, so she took her staff from where it rested beside her things and left the room, quietly closing the door behind her. She made her way outside, hoping she wasn't too late for that practice session.
Snowlynx
Snowlynx smiles when she sees Lady Leana walking towards her.
"Well, good afternoon, Lady Leana. Did you sleep well?" Snowlynx notices the goose egg on her forehead, walks up to her, to inspect further.

"Hmmm, you have a real nice goose egg there, my dear. Does it come with a nice throbbing, too?
Snow smirks, "I guess, that explains why I got a grumbling at from Schnee this morning for the mess of the serving cart scattered on the floor all over the dinning room."

"Perhaps, we should take it easy today. Come sit, I will teach you a little mental aspects of self-defense." Snowlynx motions to a sitting log in the courtyard, where they could talk and still view a few spars going on.

Snowlynx begins, "I am not sure how much training you have had, so I will just start the lesson and you can take from it what you need. Okay, you must, if you intend to stay alive, master the mental aspects of self-defense...awareness of the situation, management of your fear, killer instinct, and pain tolerance."

"The mental aspects of self defense are the most important by far. Anyone can learn how to swing or par with a staff or sword, but if you fear it...you have lost already."

Snowlynx points to two men sparring,
"Watch and observe as they spar. When an opponent attacks, your body will go into an adrenal state. The good news is this helps several positive actions in the body."

"It dilates the pupils to increase the amount of light that enters the eyes, it causes sweating to help dissipate heat, it increases the heart rate, which will increase blood flow to the muscles, so you are ready to move."

"Do you see how they watch each other? Watch them closely, try to predict who will strike next and how. Many trainers teach you to watch your opponent, true. But, you are not just watching their hands and feet. You must watch their eyes, mouth, the slightest movement can be a sign to what your opponent will do next."

"Any questions so far?"

Leana
"Yes, I slept well, thank you." she knew it was a lie before it passed her lips; she hadn't slept well at all since returning from her latest forage into the Weald. In fact, she hadn't had a night where she was not plagued by nightmares of one sort or another. "Aye, I'm afraid I had a bit too much to drink." she blushed, embarassed to have caused such a mess and such a difficult time for Schnee.

Lea followed Snowlynx out into the sun and the sounds of men sparing. Her head did ache, though it was more annoying than painful, except for the occasional t. "I've had a bit of training in both fighting with a staff and a sword, though I've really just started. I don't know why Wolf brought me..I'm not all that great with either."

She listened intently as Lynx spoke, thinking that there was a whole LOT Angkor had yet to teach her. She watched the men for a moment, "No...no questions.." She was enthralled with the beauty of the dance..her own sparrings seemed to be clumsy brawls compared to this.
Snowlynx
"All these work together to assure that we can both engage in a physical fight or escape. Despite our bodies' best efforts, however, without proper training a surge like this can cause the body to freeze. When emotions spin out of control, we freeze, making it impossible to perform complicated movements."

"As our mind recognizes actions from our opponent, it starts to think of outcomes and will execute the response most needed to ensure survival. All of this occurs within a fraction of a second. But if we are not prepared for this situation, we may experience a Freeze. Most violent attacks are over within seconds and you have to act quickly with instinct. You cannot afford to freeze when your most valuable asset, your life, is at stake."

"If you can gain a mental advantage over your opponent either by predicting a possible move or manipulating that move that could well win you the fight. Sometimes you may need to distract your opponent's attention before you can make a move in for a strike."

Snow nods towards the guards sparring, as one uses a feint.
"The time honored distraction which is common and useful is the feint takes many forms but basically it involves you pretending to move one way to lead your opponent before quickly changing and moving another way. Feinting is really about controlling your opponent, physically as well as the mind. You are trying to make them do things they don't want to do and this gives you a degree of power over them that they will be well aware."

"You also can spit in the Face. Disgusting and filthy it may be but then so is killing. Do I care about grossing out an attacker? Of course not, and neither should you. Use this if you are grabbed and you need vital seconds so you can react in the best way possible."

"Striking an opponent generally makes them pull away from you or drop down, which isn’t always what you want. So what we do is just hit them a quick slap across the face, not hard necessarily, just enough to distract them from what you’re about to do. This one is excellent if someone grabs you by the shirt intending to strike you. You take control of the grabbing hand and block the incoming strike with the other, then with the hand you just blocked with slap your opponent across the face, your arm is already in position for this and apply a wrist or arm lock to the arm you already have control of."

Snowlynx stands up, remembering something she had to do.,
"If all you want to do is control or escape an opponent, a good distraction will often work and worth learning and practicing. Well, that is all I really have time for today. I hope it gives you some food for thought. I have some matters I must take care of, that I just remembered. I will talk to you later."

Wolfmist_pendragon
Wolfmist stirred, grumbling about the roof moving when his arm flopped into the empty space beside him. He opened an eye, squinting through his hangover, then raised his head in surprise, "Leana?" he looked around but saw no sign of her. He looked to the window and saw that the curtains were still closed. He was still wearing his clothes from the previous night, and so got up without much a-do, and opened them. The sun was high, he had slept the morning away. He cursed, wondering where Leana was, then a vague memory about sparring came to his foggy mind.

Brushing down his clothes to try and smooth out the wrinkles and creases although, really quite futile in effort, he opened the catch of the door and went into the corridor. He saw a lonesome guard at the end, and approach him, asking quietly to try to aid his hangover headache, "Excuse me, please can you point me to where Leana might be? And er... would it be to late to enquire about some food, by any chance?"

* after riding several hours out on the patrol, Lord Paddy called a halt by a stream at was obviously a well used trail camp site. A leisurely lunch of cold cuts and fresh bread baked that morning were enjoyed by all.

* The Ride back to MerryWeather Castle being scenic, and enjoyable in most aspects. Yet not one of any action, which was surely a Blessing. This patrol being part of the 1st Blood Oath Army, situatedon the outskirts of Carlisle.

* Soon the Castle came into sight, and as the retinue weaved down the valley and up to the Castle the sun moved furter into the west.

Talebot, any word if you all are staying the night? the facilities are great up at the Castle.

"Certainly, Sir Wolfmist, everyone is in the courtyard for morning exercises or out on patrol. You will probably find the Baroness and the Lady Leana in the courtyard."

The guard pauses for a moment, "The Baroness rarely eats breakfast, but after sparring, Schnee usually has a nice brunch with all the fixin's set up for the Baroness and her house guests. Schnee probably has it set up already, you could check the dinning room. Morning exercise should be about done."
