Wallace Castle

Kelster
It had been a long time, Kelster thought to himself as he sat in his favourite chair, drinking a large whisky. A long time since he had his family and friends around him. The war had seen to that. Cumberland had suffered because of the very long siege but it had worked. The enemy, starved, diseased and broken, had been beaten. Time to rebuild Cumberland now he thought.

As Jas's all too brief stay, came to an end and she left. He looked around at smiling faces, something he had missed so very badly. His sister, Sassy had met Score and she seemed so happy now. Score seemed like a good man. Kel was so happy for her. Cousin Jeal had arrived with her husband, Llop. If only the rest of his family could be here now. His wife, Hikenai, stuck in Dumfries had been on his mind constantly, but he had word that she had made it safely across the border and would be headed straight for the castle he hoped. As Kel was finally thinking towards there future and wondering where his other sister Lil was, he had missed her so much too. There was a loud thump against the door.

Rushing to the door to see if Hik had arrived, he opened it and saw his sister Lil , standing before him. With his arms outstretched to give her a hug, he almost wept. Both his sister, here in Wallace castle, safe and sound. Pulling her inside as fast as he could, he burst open the door of the sitting room. Look everyone, Lil has arrived. With most of his family here now, he just wished Hik and his brother Os would show up now. Pulling Sass closer to them, he hugged both his sisters together. I have missed you both so much.

“Okay, close your eyes and count to one hundred! No peeking!” I said to the imps, and scurried away as fast as I could; I already knew where I was going to hide-in that old suit of armor at the top of the stairs. They’ll never find me in there, heheh….

“Ready or not, here we come!”-yep, just like a stampede, they’re comin’; nothing delicate and subtle about six little whirlwinds blowin’ around day in and day out. They were running through the rooms, opening closets, looking underneath and behind furniture, peculiarly whacking the curtains in a spot where, would a body have been behind them, it would have produced a sharp knock to an area approximately twelve inches below a person’s waistline…geezy peezy, where do they learn these things???

I was starting to get a touch of claustrophobia, and I was hearing a commotion coming from downstairs…adults!…okay, a couple of minutes, and I’m out of this can, but before the first ten seconds were done, little Alyssum and young James started having words with each other, and James said something she didn’t particularly like, and he pushed her, and she pushed back, as did he, and as did she, finally, with a push that knocked the lad a-stumbling backwards, naturally, right into the armor, which catches me unprepared and letting out with a small shout, which spooked James, and as he was hastily untangling himself from the talking metal thing, he proceed to knock it over, and, naturally, send it rolling down the stairs…

(Kids, don’t try this at home…)

If it looked as bad as it felt, it sure wouldn't make for a graceful ballet; and the noise! Good golly, Miss Agnes!! Step after step after step, beating and banging and sounding like a tinsmith factory/shipwreck, down I went, not knowing which body part was the next in line to be pummeled. Somewhere along the way, I finally bottomed out, all dazed and confused from the mishap, and not knowing what limbs were still working...

...wiggle fingers and toes, ok, neck, check, backbone, still there...

Oh, but the battering! And the dizzies-nothing new there-my halt was pretty abrupt, and smashed my face into the helmet's visor, naturally. From a distance, I could hear people laughing-wonder what's so funny?-slowly, I lifted my good arm and, after several attempts, finally located my head, and lifted the visor...what's all these family doing here??? And why do their faces all look so funny??? My eyes were having a time getting in focus, my vision was unsure of itself...ooookay, I recognize that face, kinda...all those swords...cousin...sister Lil...

I saw my brother's face, kinda, and he looked like he'd swallowed the canary! "Hey bro..." was the last thing I remembered before being taken to dreamland...

Hikenai
It had been the longest time! A shot of her husband's fine whiskey would do her a world of good! No, Hikenai thought to herself, her husband's arms. That would be all she would need. She turned Drambuie into the gates of the vast park about Wallace Castle. She smiled and waved at the gatekeeper's wife who sat by her door snapping peas. She rode up the dirt track and then across the drawbridge of the castle. The familiar clatter of the hoof beats, the smell of the stable yard, the excited, low voices of the stable boys----Hikenai felt she had indeed come home. She waited while a man came from the guard room to take Drambuie. He assisted her from the saddle, and her legs felt weak, she was lightheaded for a moment.
M'lady Wallace! May I help you inside?
He instantly clutched her elbow, and Hikenai felt he was ready to pick her up! She held her hand, palm against his forearm, and smiled crookedly. She leaned against Dram for a moment, then straightened herself.
Thank you. Hikenai stroked Drambuie and nodded at the guard. Please see this good horse is taken care of! He is such a fine, fine friend to me! And please, see that my bags are brought up as soon as possible.
Hikenai looked about the dusty stable yard, sighed with satisfaction, shook her skirts, and started up the path to the side entrance to Wallace Castle, breathing in the lovely scent of the roses Kelster had planted in the side garden. Hikenai gazed at Wallace Castle before her in such splendor, and marveled again that she, a simple woman from a humble home in Cornwall, should end up living in Cumberland, in a castle with her prince.

Kelster
Enjoying his family being around him once more, passing drinks around, laughing and joking with his sisters, his cousin Jeal, her husband Llop, it seemed like old times for Kelster Wallace. Then , just as he was passing Lil a large whisky, he heard an almighty clattering noise coming from the stairs. Drawing his sword while rushing to the door, his heart pounding, thinking that the castle had been breached by the enemy, he flung open the door and watched as a suit of armour seemed to be falling down the stairs in a very odd manner. The armour seemed to be alive. Hearing noises such and hmpf, arggggh and hel... clunk, he recognized the sound of his own brother, Osbert. Laughing very loudly as all the family and friends appeared behind him, the armour and his brother finally came to an almighty crash at the bottom of the stairs.

The suit of armour, with his brother inside it seemed to be motionless for a little while, then and army lifted up and pulled up the visor. "Hey bro..." Trying to stop laughing as he knew Os must be in pain, he was just about to ask him what happened when his brothers eyes closed. Rushing over to him, he picked him up off the floor and carried him to the sitting room, placing him on some soft cushions, he could only say, Are you alright bro?

Ah, the simple joy of just being home with loved ones! With lips barely moist with the first sip of whisky Kel had brought, just as the loudest noise she'd heard in a while found it's way hastily to her ears. Making her hands shake in its unexpected blow. A sound so metallic, so shattering and so very long, that could make any man's hair stand on end, if only for a moment. Surely no inhabitant of the great castle had been left undisturbed. Or asleep.

Rushing with Kel towards the hall, the stairs...the mighty armour collapsed upon the stone floor, the mighty voice of mighty Osbert coming from within.

She burst into laughter, though she knew this could be serious, but her own big brother, a man in the full meaning of the word, what was he thinking? Unable to help herself from giggling while she followed Kel helping Os sit, she was barely able to say, between the ferocious stream of giggles "Do you need anything? A sip of whisky maybe?" The glass still shaking in her hands advanced delicately across the air towards Osbert's slightly confused figure.

It be the funniest thing the ways James walked back on his heels like doing a little dance and he hit the metal man! Roland told me the metal man is like clothes that can be worn so's you keep per-tected in fights but how could a man be fighting in metal clothes? And Elspeth was behind me pushing me on and I had to stop for I runs into James too and suddenly Wham

Bonk Wham Bonk Wham .....all the way down the long stairs to the bottom that metal man went!

It was funny but it made me feel all creepy because---I thought I heard him yell!

Next, the adults were standing over the old metal man at the bottom of the stairs and he turned out to be Lord Os! It was the best game of hide and seek ever!
--Blythe
Blythe came into the foyer of Wallace Castle to the high pitched excited chatter of children. She could see Lilith, Sassy and Lord Kelster, hovering over a knight who reclined on the lounge in the sitting room. The children were gathing in a small group as they quickly came down the stairs, their feet tripping over each others and elbows shoving, noses wrinkling, their voices carried.

Elspeth, he did so yell out as he come down!

Albert, he is a suit of armor not a man!

It was Lord Os, I tells ye! Miss Blythe he come falling down the steps

Lord Wallace? Blythe looked into the sitting room in confusion as she made her way to the foot of the stairway. She turned her attention to the children then, scurrying them along back up the steps by distributing small candies among them, telling them she would only listen about Lord Os's adventure in armor once they reached the classroom.
Hikenai
Hikenai hesitated for a moment, debating if she should enter the castle by the side entrance, and attempt to surprise Kel, or go to the front, where she would be greeted by someone and shown in, probably by Thackery. There would be no romantic surprise there, for she would be announced then! Kel would hear her name before he saw her face....

As Hik thought of Kel's surprise visit to Dumfries, she giggled and knew she wanted him to be as flabbergasted as she was, when he had suddenly just appeared at her tavern. She turned, and quickly walked down the length of the castle's walkway, which ran along side the smooth stone walls for a mile it seemed to Hikenai, before she reached the rear of the castle, and hurried into the kitchen area.

She drew some strange looks from the kitchen maids but if they recognized her, they gave no sign. She started to ask about Alice when suddenly she heard a voice behind her!

Alice!

Hikenai was so happy to see the head housekeeper for the family. Alice really occupied a position far, far above what 'housekeeper' might signify. She was more mother to Sassy, Lilith, Os and Kelster than anything, practically having raised them as toddlers and young children. Hikenai was almost moved to tears when she saw Alice, but she was too excited and happy to cry.

Alice was exactly who she needed to see in order for Hikenai's scheme to surprise Kel to be a success.

Hikenai
Hikenai tiptoed quietly up the servant stairway. She had a lump in her throat. She really was home. It had been so long since Hikenai had been at the castle, since the early summer! Her eyes filled.
She had bypassed the commotion in the great sitting room, and did not know quite what had gone on. She had heard only excited shouts, shouts and laughter, so she relaxed knowing that everyone was merry. Hikenai wanted to surprise Kel, but she was incredibly tired. She had asked Alice to have a tray of biscuits, fruit, cheese, and the most robust red wine that could be found in her husband's wine cellar, brought up to their chambers as quickly as possible. She felt weak, famished!
Hikenai was asleep before the maid put her foot to the stone stairs leading to Kel and Hikenai's room in the castle. Hik had intended to ask the maid to find Lord Wallace immediately and give him this note, which earlier, she had hastily scrawled.

Hello my love!
I am home! Meet me in our chambers. Time for refreshments.......
Hikenai

Hikenai had lain back upon the bed, clutching the sealed missive to Kel. She breathed in the clean, fresh scent of her husband----leather, the scent of the army, mixed with sweet basil, lovage, rosemary and lemongrass. Hikenai had shifted in her sleep, and the letter to Kel slid beneath the coverlet's fold.
The maid pulled the drapes, after placing the tray on the bedside table near Hikenai's sleeping form. She tiptoed from the room, and quietly closed the door.
Kelster
Seeing that his brother, Os was alright, well as alright as his brother could ever be , Kelster thought he needed to lie down for a while. The war had taken it out of him , but now finally the war seemed to be over. Taking his leave from his family and friends, he started to climb the stairs to the bedroom, his and his wife's bedroom. Thinking of her and wondering where she was, he had hoped she would arrive soon, he missed her so. The image of her face was always imprinted on his mind. Her beautiful eyes, yes those eyes, the ones that always brought Kelster Wallace up, no matter how down he felt. Her soft lips, lips that enticed him everytime he gazed upon them. Her soft skin, feeling like velvet when he rubbed the back of his hand across her cheek. Her beautiful form, then he shook his head thinking of her form, he didn't want to think of such things when she was not around him and they were alone.

Finally reaching the bedroom, his weary hand pushed open the door, only to see someone in his bed! Slowly drawing his sword, he crept towards the bed and was just about to point it at the figure laid there, when it turned over to reveal his wife's face. She was fast asleep. Wanting to wake her up to hold her in his arms once more, he could hardly contain himself but seeing her laid there fast asleep, he knew he should not, she was tired from the journey. So he got into the bed beside her, kissed her softly on the lips and lay next to her with his arm around her and dropped into a deep sleep, contented as he had not been in a very long time.

Hikenai
Hikenai turned in Kel's arms and pressed her cheek against her husband's chest. At last! His arms firmly locked around her, Hik felt herself dreamily drift back to sleep. There would be time later on for reunion, to hear news, to make plans, see family, friends...but for now, there was this only this exquisite moment for Hikenai. It had been so long in coming and had been so dearly sought, so dearly won. All this passed through Hikenai's mind in the vaguest fashion as she gratefully sighed, stretched langorously against Kel and slept on.

United steps wearily up to the doors of the castle and pauses for a long moment, his hair is rough, his beard long and scraggly, and his clothes and armor all the worse for wear. Running his free hand through his hear he laughs "Ah, fantastic way to make a fresh impression upon people, I bet I stink as well" Sighing he steps up to the door, a folded and letter held in his right hand, along with a bunch of fresh floors. Knocking on the door with his left hand he stands waiting for a servant to answer, hopefully he can just pass the flowers and message on to them to be taken to Lilith.

He would be happy if she answered the door herself, but meeting such a beautiful woman while looking like this really would be less than perfect form.
Hikenai
As the dim light of late afternoon streamed into through a crack in the thick drapes, Hikenai began to stir somewhat in her husband's arms.
Darling, I am so happy to be home at last! Hikenai whispered huskily, her emotions so raw, so bare.
Kel seemed in a deep sleep, seemed exhausted from his patrols with the army, no doubt. Hikenai kissed his dear face, gently lingered on his lips, before she too, fell back to sleep, as the sun slid further toward the horizon.

Kelster
In a very deep sleep, Kelster dreams of the bright and happy future that now seemed to be in front of him. Peace, at least for a while seemed to have descended upon Cumberland. He had his beautiful, loving wife in his arms and they had a child on the way. How glorious life would be from now on.

Darling, I am so happy to be home at last!

Hearing something in his sleep, not knowing if it was part of his beautiful dream, he feels a warm feeling of contentment through his entire body. Drifting back into his dream, he hoped it would last forever.

Feeling just slightly melancholic for their childhood little games, with Os in his noisy armor, she remembered the sound of the wooden swords her two brothers would play with. Though not very neatly carved, they seemed so realistic to her at that time. The weapons of death, she had an almost organic fear and admiration for them, though what death was supposed to mean, she could hardly understand. While herself and Sassy, tiny and powerless, would watch and cheer, while using poor Teddy to try to inflict him upon each other with what they reason would be similar strength to their brother's. For a moment, she wondered if Teddy had ever been found after the wild chase they had the past winter, as she hardly took notice that Kelster suddenly disappeared through the enormous doors of the grand hall after receiving a note.

With a little sigh, more out of joy than sadness, she existed the hall, still holding the glass with the delicious liquor. With the intention of visiting her room upstairs, she lightly stepped past the entrance towards the staircase. But a knock at the door made her stop. She turned around and waited for a while, wondering where Thackeray was hiding, or anyone who should open the door. T'was so quiet. Heading back down the stairs, she placed her hand on the door, pushing it open. Her left hand still holding the glass, she let it fall and be shattered for eyes blinked in amazement "United!" she almost shouted as she just stood there, unable to move, unable to decide what she was supposed to do. But as her eyes seemed to moist under the pressure of a warm tear, she smiled. She should be happy. She reached for his hand, looking at him just to see if it was not ll simply in her head. He warm and soft at touch, his cheeks so very different from the paleness of a ghost that she could imagine. "You are alive!"
