As Lorena had come to the kitchen to tell Alice of Sassy arrival, Blythe rose from the table where she was sipping her Sweet Woodruff tea and musing about the little llama Evesham had helped Neonea settle in the stables along side the foal of Miss Fortune.

The Lady Sassy is home!? Blythe hurried from the table and passed Lorena quickly, and made her way up the long corridor of Wallace castle as quickly as she could. The great hall still teamed with guests. She arrived in time to hear Sassy say
Quote:

Blythe stopped, dropped a graceful curtsy to the young Wallace sister and smiled.
M'lady, it is so good to see you home once more! If I may escort you upstairs, the Lord Kelster and Lady Hik are in the bedchamber, Lady Hikenai only this morning has given birth, and she is still in bed!
The young servant woman stopped short at that, not wanting to presume to tell Lady Sassy the Wallace's wonderful news.
Would you like to come with me? Blythe smiled at Thackery. Elebert Evesham is coming up from the kitchen to assist in bringing all Lady Sassy's belongings inside, Thackery. Evesham will help you!
Hikenai
Hikenai hurried down the hallway of Wallace Castle, and rushed into Kelster's study. Several weeks had passed since the babies birth, and Sassy's return home. Her brother Paddy, and his family had just spent a wonderful time visiting them, but with the rest of the Brotherhood, had left Egremont for Carlisle...and Merryweather Fortress. The time since the birth of the twins had been spent in the close company of family, and Hikenai was very thankful. But she and Kel were blessed with friends, as well! Just this morning, a messenger arrived with this wonderful letter from their friend, Henry! It had been since just prior to Sara and Matthew's birth that she and Kel had seen Henry, as he was very busy with the Cumberland Mountaineers.

Smiling she held out the letter to Kel, I am so proud of Henry for his hard work for Cumberland, but look, he took time out to write us about the babies!

18 Jan 2011 15:05

Dear Lady Hik,

Greeting to you from Carlisle. I just hear the great news about the twins. Congratulations and much well wishes to you and to the new bundles of joy. I am sorry that I had to leave the castle just when everything was happening, but my duty to my County had to come first. As soon as I can , I will come to see you and the babies.

Life is very different for me at the moment. I never knew there was so much to learn. It is also hard because I am missing all of my friends in Egremont. It seems like a very long time since I was there. Please send all my love to everybody there.

I must go now, more training and working to do.

Wishing you well
Your friend
Henry

Isn't it wonderful to hear how happy he is, Kel? I must say, though, I miss Henry so much!!! It seems forever since he visited us in the Bells, darling.
Hikenai crossed to the sideboard and poured herself a large glass of water. She sipped it, thoughtfully, and turned back to Kelster....Soon we should be ready for our journey to Lady Roberta and Chris! My brother will be marrying soon! I still can't get over it! Chrisiusmaximus-----England's most confirmed batchelor----a married man, at last!

Yes darling, Chris a married man. I always thought that in the end he would marry his sword you know. Laughing his joke, Kel then smiled at his wife. Yes it will be great to go to his wedding, i wonder if we should take Matthew and Sara as well or leave them here? What do you think my love, it may be a long way for them to travel but i am sure Chris and lady Roberta would love to see them as well as little Neo.

Hikenai
Aye, darling, it is a long way....and yet, I don't think I can bear to leave them behind! Both Lorena and Blythe might accompany us, to tend to the children, along with the nurse. I think that Neonea should definitely come, and she is recovered from her illness now.
Hikenai finished her water and turned to Kelster, putting her arms about his neck. She smiled sweetly at him, and kissed his cheek, knowing he would agree.
I just could not bear to leave them, Kelster. Sara and Matthew must come!
Then, she continued to hold his gaze as she turned her her head slightly, and smiled again. She knew that Father Richileau, her good friend from Barnstaple would be performing the ceremony, that Lily, her sister Mistyblue's daughter was the flower girl for the ceremony. It would be a wonderful experience for Neonea to meet her family down south.
And I just wonder if we will not be able to see Holly again?!
Hikenai laughed, remembering the little rapscallion of a girl who had disrupted their own wedding ceremony! Holly (her nickname had been Su-su a couple years ago when she came to them in Egremont) was living with Mistyblue most of the time, she heard, since Rich, her guardian, had entered the priesthood. Holly was being raised with Lily. She and Kel had once hoped to adopt her, themselves, but the circumstances were never quite right for them to do so. Hikenai smiled and a small lump formed in her throat. Holly was a dear.

He was instructed to go over all carriages the Wallace family, and their servants, would be riding in, inspect all fittings, make certain beyond a doubt, all was as it should be for a safe journey to the south of England, for the wedding of Chrisiusmaximus, Earl of Bedford, and the Lady Robert, the Baroness of Peterborough.

Hmmmf! John snorted. He put no stock in titles, though he did think highly of the Baron. The Baron was a working man, like him. Lord Wallace liked his ale, and he liked people in general, and treated them all the same, showed them respect regarding their person, saw through to the inner man, Lord Kel did. No, he didn't put stock in titles, or formalities, and he spoke his mind, of that you could be sure, John thought. Never one to allow himself to be taken advantage of, or played the fool.

Now, to shoe the horses! John regarded the horses that the Earl of Bedford had given the Wallace's on their wedding day. Fine, massive hunters they are! He said to Martin, the head stableman. He slapped one lightly on the rump. They could take a chunk out of a man if they were of a mind to bite!John was glad he got on well with the animals. He had known a man to suffer quite a wound from a mean spirited horse!

Kelster
I just could not bear to leave them, Kelster. Sara and Matthew must come!

Seeing the look in his wifes eyes, he knew he could not say no to her even though he did have a little concern about the babies. He never could say no to her when she looked at him with those beautiful eyes.

All right my love, we will take Matthew and Sara with us along with Neo.

And I just wonder if we will not be able to see Holly again?!

I so hope so dear, i miss little Su_su, i mean Holly. I wonder how much she has grown since we last saw her?

Angus had no sooner returned to Egremont from his trip south with the messengers, taking letters to Lady Hikenai's family, than the Baron notified him he was to go south again, to accompany the Wallace family, on their trip, for the marriage of the Earl of Bedford, Christopher de Peche, and Lady Roberta, the Countess of Peterborough. Angus had harbored a silent, secret resentment about it. He had thought that Sir James Bland, one of the knights formerly in service to the Earl of Bedford, would be chosen to head the retinue formed to accompany and protect the Wallace family.

I just returned, Jah's bones, he groaned to himself.

He did regard Sir James warily. The man had been drinking more and more. He was of no use to anyone in his present state. It would not do to entrust the safety of one's family to such a man. Angus realized the Baron could not place Sir James in that position of responsibility, no matter that Sir James had guarded the Lady Hikenai for the past few years, ever since her brother, Chrisiusmaximus had appointed Sir James to escort Hikenai to Cumberland that first time, long before her marriage to the Baron.

The retinue riding along side the Wallace coaches, through the Wiltshire countryside, had been in the saddle for days, and would be in the saddle for weeks. There was no help for it, it was hard traveling. They must arrive in time and were on a tight schedule. Angus shifted in an effort to spare his aching back and shook his head, thinking of Sir James. It certainly was a sad day when a man let the bottle get the best of him, and put a such a sad finale on a life of honor, bravery and allegiance to the Crown!

--Sir.james.bland
Each day was easier for Sir James. He didn't drink. It was simple as that. Each day he turned to the work at hand, and held no thought for the next day. He concentrated only on not having a drink on that one particular day. Soon the days turned into a few weeks, and he still had not tipped the bottle. Food tasted better, he slept more soundly, when he slept, which admittedly, was not for much more than six hours at a stretch, if he was lucky, but he rose well rested.

Going to the castle kitchen early, before first light, he enjoyed the Sweet Woodruff tea Hikenai had suggested for him to drink each morning. She had left him an ample supply of it, and other herbs, before the Wallaces traveled to Launceston for the wedding. Sweetened with honey, hot in his mug, he enjoyed the tea before he ate the wholesome breakfast Alice would prepare.

Lorena would give him a knowing grin and nod, as she passed in the castle corridors. She knew what he had been through in those first days he fought off the urge for Scotch whisky. She had seen him lay upon his bed and shake violently, had heard his retches, and groans. as he sweat the poison of drink from his system, clawing his arms and legs, as he felt swarms of imaginary ants march upon his flesh. Now however, his garments would dampen with the honest sweat of a days' work, and he felt gratified each time he spoke to her in a clear voice, free of the thickened speech of drunkeness. He gazed at her with clear eyes, free of a drunken haze, and he saw her for herself----a fine woman, mother to fatherless children, a hard working woman, full of compassion and wisdom. He took one day at a time, however, for he would not give himself leave to hope for more than her friendship, her companionship, just for each day he was fortunate to spend with her as his friend and confidant.

--Lorena_
........oh my baby, oh my love,
Gone the wild geese, gone the dove,
Your father was my own true love
Ish go day to mo mornin' slon....

The last line in the song always tripped Lorena up, as she could not speak the language, but the ancient song was so beautiful, so haunting, she sang anyway....forming the strange lyrics with her tongue as best she could, singing the way it sounded to her.

She had hurriedly come back to Wallace Castle this evening to pack up a box of fresh linens, pillows, herbal toiletries, and anything else a young woman might like. The girl, Phoebe, was going to stay on at Kel's Bells, take up residence in the room above the tavern, and work for room and board. Lorena knew Lady Hikenai would approve mightily of her having hired her, as Lady Hik was ready to take in Phoebe as well, the night that Neonea had come to them! Lorena imagined that when Lady Hikenai returned from Scotland, she would try to persuade Phoebe to move to the castle, and quit at Kel's Bells, pursue an education, instead!

Not sure about that one! Lorena thought, thinking of the independent young girl, who was little more than a child, actually. Lorena had not forgotten how quietly Phoebe had vanished from the bedroom above Kel's Bells in November, when she had stayed there with her and Neonea, before Lady Hik came for them the next day. Neither she, nor Sir James Bland, who had slept downstairs in the office of the closed tavern, had heard Phoebe steal away during the night.

Lorena smiled, as she continued to sing, and then slipped down the servant stairway towards Sir James' suite of rooms. He might accompany her to the tavern, they would stay briefly to get Phoebe settled in, and then, maybe, Sir James might want to go with her to her small home, where her children were attended by a kind neighbor, and awaited her return, so they could have tea together! Sir James had said he wished to meet her young ones, and tonight was a good opportunity!
Hikenai
Home!
It would be good to be home at last, but they had scuttled home, as fast as the coach could carry them, once the messenger had found them outside Wigtown. The past several weeks wrung Hikenai's heart as they traveled a weary road to Scotland and back from the funeral of Brother Chris. Only Neonea's innocent chatter had made it bearable for Hik----that and Kelster's warmth. She had known then, when Kelster broke the seal on the missive from Captain Perry, what awaited them in Cumberland. The letter brought dire and troubling news, for Sir Wolfmist, Chief Justice of Cumberland, had declared himself outside the realm of the Monarch! Kelster was asked to gather troops, and he and Captain Perry would march on the Pendragon Castle post haste, in retaliation for Sir Wolfmist's treason against the King, and the sovereignty of England.

The charge was severe and the punishment no less than a public beheading!

Hikenai shuddered at the thought. She remembered Sir Wolfmist's sentiments regarding the King, from having spent an idle afternoon once in the Mountaineers tavern in midwinter. Sir Wolfmist had been in a foul mood over the Monarchy but Hikenai had not felt her friend this violently opposed! That he would dare treason?!

And now, as Kelster prepared to ride away on this mission, Hikenai felt her heart sink low. She rocked the babes and tended to Neonea, but the sadness she had felt in Scotland overtook her, and the blackest depression settled upon her.

--Blythe
The lady Hikenai was beside herself with concern. Blythe could not help but worry as she saw Hikenai go about with a drawn look upon her face. Stress often aged people, and after the birth of the twins, Blythe had seen Hikenai miraculously shed years, in the happiness of having the babies....and yet, now, the poor woman looked older, more grave, more somber than Blythe had ever seen her.

Neonea's true father had returned! His name was Cy, something or other, Blythe reflected to herself. The Baron, and Lady Hikenai, were in correspondence with Dame Rein, and they would not give up the child without a fight. Blythe hoped that Millicent Rein, one of the sharpest legal minds in all of England, would settle. once and for all. the question of Neonea's custody.

Lady Hikenai needed her mind set at ease.

--Sir.james.bland
Sir James was disgusted with himself. Nothing he put his hand to went well. He had tried to assist Martin, the head of the stables, with getting Drambuie ready for a race in which Lady Hik intended him to run--- and the beast had bitten him! Dram had never been known to do such a thing before, but Sir James had been spit upon, earlier that morning, by Winston, the little llama that shared the stables with Dram, Miss Fortune, and the other horses. Sir James had turned his back on Drambuie, cursed Winston under his breath, and lo, and behold, the horse had chosen that particular time to take a chunk out of Sir James' back! It had bled profusely and Sir James had cursed even more.

Lorena had applied a poultice of heal all and pennyroyal, and Sir James had kept the bandages clean, but it gave him a fit for his belt rubbed against the bulkiness of the bandages. No matter which way he shifted in bed, he could not lie upon the wound comfortably, so he was consigned to sleeping on his stomach!

Jah's teeth and liver! He was getting no rest!

To make matters worse, Wallace forge was closed, and the whereabouts of John Blackstone was unknown. This worried Blythe more than she would admit, and the sight of her pretty face, pale with concern over Lady Hikenai's predictament with little Lady Neonea's true father, and the disappearance of Blackstone, made Sir James groan with the inability to remedy the situation. If he ran upon the missing smithy, and the man did not have a good reason for having dropped out of sight, Sir James intended to give him a thrashing.

Further complicating things was Miss Lorena's strange behavior! Ever since the Wallaces' return from Scotland, the closeness she and Sir James had developed had changed. Now an air of tension accompanied any time they had spent together whether at Wallace Castle, in the midst of the servants, or alone in the carriage, going to and from Egremont on errands for Lady Hik, or to the tavern, so Lorena could oversee the kitchen operation and bar maids. It seemed their earlier attraction to each other had now dissolved into uneasy, strained exchanges that merely served to cause each other embarrassment and awkwardness!

Jah's bones, thought Sir James, things were not this complicated when I was drinking!

Sir James went about his business with a scowl on his handsome face.

Kelster
After all the happenings of late, Chris and Boo's wedding, Bro Chris's funeral and the merge into a new county of westmorland, Kelster finally was home and happy. The twins seemed to be growing fast with each passing day, Neo seemed so happy and content with her new life as there daughter, his wife , Hikenai seemed as radiant and happy as she always seemed to be when home at the castle. Life was getting back to normal now and Kel thought it was high time he went riding around the estate as spring was fast approaching.

Walking to the stable and saddling up his horse, Miss Fortune, he jumped up and gently clicked his heels into her sides.
Come on girl, lets go and see nature bursting into life once more. As they contiuned to ride over his land, the birds were singing, the sun was shining and the smells of spring were in the air.

Hikenai
Hikenai had enjoyed the opening celebrations of the new county, she had reveled in her freedom from council duties, and indulged in the ale and Happy Time while taking part in the festivities. Her depression over the events of late winter had ended, replaced by concern over the adoption of Neonea, but even that didn't unduly worry her. As the winter passed, and the buds appeared on the trees, Hikenai's attention turned to family and friends in Egremont.

The twins were growing daily, by leaps and bounds, passing little milestones only parents might notice. Neonea had taken her place in her home and in their hearts, and her winsome ways won over all who came into contact with the child.

As the spring progressed, Hikenai began to think about a ball....a May Day ball!

I shall have to discuss this with Kelster! Our great hall is certainly large enough for dancing, and we could have quite an evening, lots of music and merry making.
