Wallace Castle

Wolfmist_pendragon
"Excellent. Would you mind? I need some help from your staff for the next bit. Tell them to obey my next orders?" he looked around and picked up a quill, sitting down to the pad of parchment, writing out a list of things to do.
Hikenai
Hikenai stepped outside the door and motioned to Blythe Williams, her lady in waiting, who was passing the door to the study, on her way to the great hall.
Blythe, please go get Calhoon, Forbes and Sgt. Bardock, um.....and Sir James Bland. In fact go get Sir James first if you would, and direct them all to come to the study. Tell them all is well. Especially, if you see Forbes with Lord Wallace, tell them all is well.
The young woman swept Hikenai a graceful curtsy, then hurried on her way to comply with Hik's request.
Hikenai turned back to the study, where Sir Wolfmist sat at Kelster's desk writing industriously.

As was his routine, Sir James had been in the kitchen, enjoying a good cup of Sweet Woodruff tea following his afternoon of guard duty, and then errands, accompanying Mistress Lorena on her rounds about Egremont. He was there, chatting with Alice May when Blythe hurriedly entered. Now, he hurried to the study, as Blythe had directed him, and he paused outside the threshold, respectfully waiting until he was bid to enter.

Waiting for them, Wolfmist looked up, covering his writing slightly, "the best thing to do for a few weeks is allow your body to detox. I will send for the best quack in town... I am thinking a nice water and bandage treatment and perhaps including some oil and massage therapy. We will need to lock you up in a dungeon cell for a while - don't worry, we'll allow you the usual comforts, but I hope you will understand if I don't trust your fingers for a while. I'll allow you a couple of hours every morning and evening to exercise and work at your shop, but only a few. We need to reduce the temptation as much as possible and gradually increase rehabilitation."

He sighed, then looked down to make a few more notes, then, "You need to tell me if any other people have been ordering the opium from you on a regular basis and what for."

Wolf looked to the staff and prepared to give some orders ((next post)).

Sir James heard the words the man spoke. His own mind, so recently cleared, his own spirit so recently restored from the urge to drink, he immediately grasped the situation, and did not wait to be beckoned. He did not even knock, for he noted the stiff posture of Lady Hikenai, and the shock which was evident on her face. These things must be done quickly, he thought, while Lady Hikenai is still willing!
Hikenai
Hikenai practically reeled in shock! Detox? Locked in the dungeon? She had agreed to allow him to appoint another apothecary.....but these other plans....oh....... Hikenai met Sir James's expression. If ever there was someone to understand her, he would. Hikenai shook her head.
No, Sir Wolfmist, only I have taken the elixir. Apart from the random drinks I have offered others, no one regularly comes to me for it. No one at all, just me....And Hikenai threw her hands up over her face in shame.

Wolf nodded, "and what about your husband? Does he partake, often?"

He ripped the parchment from its loose binding and handed it to the staff member who had entered, "you will need to provide for her night and day. Any visitors who step to the dungeon must be searched for any opium or ingredients or tools to make it. Anything else should be fine. Any gifts that come into the castle or presented to her elsewhere will need to be scrutinised for tools or ingredients or opium itself."

He got up and dotted the items on the list as he explained them to both the staff and Hikenai, "Here are the items I will allow into her new chamber, which should be scrubbed clean with freshly slaked lime, whitewashed with lime paint and a sealed but clean window. Please find a suitable dungeon cell and do all these things to it, I shall be there to inspect it weekly, but I shall send a Pendragon Knight daily to inspect daily. And one final thing. I must insist that all family relatives, including Kelster, be searched thoroughly for contraband also. I will be lenient with visiting hours, your Lady will be quite bored for a while until this is over, and boredom is something that should be avoided, else her fingers may wander. Understood?"
Hikenai
Does Kelster partake? Have you run mad, sir! He never touches the elixir, he has no inkling of it's properties! I had no inkling of properties that would warrant the treatment you propose for me!

Hikenai gasped at the inference Wolfmist made. Could her Happy Time elixir be a poison?! She stood, dumbfounded at his words.

Wait a moment! When I consented to giving over control of my apothecary to you, I remember you distinctly said, you would not control anything else, but I had to obey your orders if I wanted any help from you. I consented. But now, you are adding additional conditions to our agreement!

Hikenai was in a cold sweat, but not from overindulgence from the elixir, and not from fear, but only from anticipating Kelster's imminent arrival which she judged would be any minute! When her husband arrived and found Sir Wolfmist barking orders, she was frightened of the consequences. Kelster Wallace was not the sort of man to allow another to come into his home and take over! Hikenai was in a panic that her admission of weakness and over fondness for the elixir would be the cause of spilled blood.

Don't you think that your directives concerning my course of treatment are quite harsh?! Surely, I am not deserving of the detainment you envision, nor is Kelster the sort of man....nor any of my family members or servants, the sort of people who would need searching for contraband!

The frenzy of fear that filled Hikenai was palpable. She turned to Wolfmist and desperately uttered, I will not allow it! I must be with my family and loved ones, not locked away like some animal! No! Have you lost your mind, Sir Wolfmist! Kelster would never allow me to be treated like a mad, raving lunatic, and I would die first!

Sir James stood, holding the paper Wolfmist had given him. Hikenai could see anger inflame the older man and he awaited one word from her to seize the man he viewed as an interloper into the Wallace's business. Yet, he restrained himself, and did not act despite his own inclination to throttle Wolfmist.

Wolf looked to the window with a look of disdain, "calm down, my lady, I did say that there would be no restriction to your visitors. On the contrary, I implore your family and friends to visit you as often as possible. The only condition is that your hands be prevented from reaching out to the vice we are trying to conquer. Now calm down, sit down and stop panicking. It's this kind of reaction that I am fully expecting over the next two weeks or so before your body realises you do not need opium any further."

Wolf got up from the desk and proceeded around it so that he could approach Hikenai and show her his meaningful sincerity in every word he was saying.

"Now, about this promise, I shall repeat it so that you can understand. I said, 'For me to make sure you break this habit you will have to follow every order I say about this. I will not control anything else, but you will obey my orders if you want any help from me.' Now, as far as I understand, I promised that I would not control anything else outside.

You have lands and titles, I am not ordering any change in the management of those. I am not interfering with your light duties although it is obvious you will not be able to serve cavalry. I am sure that if you explain to your commanders and peers that you have taken ill of health - nothing more - they will understand and be able to cope without you for as long as I expect this trifle of a matter will take.

"Your staff and your guards are about, tending to your every need, which they should be doing anyway. I have asked them to prepare a cell, so that you cannot cause damage to yourselves and others in the panic that will inevitably come. I have not spoken to your gardener although I would advise him to prepare posies for your enjoyment once a day...

"In fact, the only infraction I make is that for the immediate for-see-able future we are going to work together and mend you. That is what you want, yes? It will be tough and for the first few days you will scream and cry and yell to be let out of that horrid cell, all for a few... precious... drops..." he had now taken out the flask and teetered it in front of Hikenai's eyes as if to emphasise his words, "of this." He put it away again after hanging for a few moments to let his meaning sink in.

"But in the end, we both know this is for the better, don't we?"
--Bardock
Bardock felt very uneasy at what Wolfmist had said and he was not happy at taking any orders from anyone but his Lordship the Baron of Ravenglass. Knocking on the door of the library, he opened it and approached Kelster Wallace.

My Lord, Sir Wolfmist is here and ...... As he expalined the situation, He could see a look of anger appear on the Baron's face. Well, needless to say my Lord, i wanted to check with you first.

Kelster
With the anger rising inside him at the fact that Wolfmist had come into his castle and was now trying to order his guards and his staff around, Kelster waited till Bardock had finished speaking.

I am glad you came to me with this Bardock and i want you to relay a message to all the guards and the staff in my Castle. Kelster Wallace is still master in this house and Wolmist is not, his so called orders to you and anyone else in my employ must be disregarded. Orders in my home come from me and nobody else, anyone attempting to do as he says instead of my wishes will no longer be in the employ of the Wallace household, in fact i may personally run them through myself. If he continues along this path be ready for the word from me to take him by the scruff of the neck and throw him out of my castle. Do you understand me Bardock?

Bardock nodded to the Baron.

Yes my lord, i understand you perfectly well, i will tell all the guards and staff right now. Bardock left the room and went to Thackery first so that he could let all the staff know and then went back to the barracks to inform all the guards of his lordships wishes.

A few weeks later, Sir James took up his journel, copied the present date, and began to write.

And so it all came to a conclusion. Sir Wolfmist left, and I, myself, escorted him to the edge of the park about Wallace Castle, and watched as he rode into the night, back to his own estate. Early on the morning after, acting on orders from Lord Kelster, I accompanied Mistress Lorena to the Lady de Bevill Apothecary shop, and there we told the apothecary, Mr. D'Arcy, of what we had been instructed to do. We destroyed all Happy Time elixir that was in stock on the shelves of the storeroom, and all ingredients needed for preparing it, as well. Mr. D'Arcy checked over the inventory carefully, making sure we had overlooked nothing. He then wrote a missive to Lady Hikenai's suppliers, cancelling all further shipments of poppy seeds, and instructed them that if at any time in the future, they received orders from the Lady de Bevill shop for any opiate, they were to notify the Baron immediately, and were not, under any circumstances, to ship any supply to Egremont.

Lady Hik stayed in her room for several days, attended by Blythe and Lorena. The Baron never left her side. She was not locked in, nor did she cry or beg for the substance upon which she had developed such a fondness for, and dependence upon. She did, however, appear heartbroken, and it was many days before her smile was seen again at Wallace Castle.

Lord Kelster was to be honored at the Tower of London, and Lady Hik proudly accompanied her husband to the ceremony, ever mindful of how close she had come to destroying all she held dear in this life.

Sir James closed his journel and sighed. He took another sip of the Sweet Woodruff tea and shook his head. Lady Hikenai was herself again, but she had struggled painfully, and regained her sense of self only after nearly losing everything. Lord Kelster's love reclaimed and redeemed her, it restored her to sanity, Sir James thought to himself, as he placed his journel on the table.
Hikenai
Hikenai rolled over in bed, flung her arm around Kelster and pulled him tight. The faint streaks of dawn colored the window next to their bed. Last night she had drawn the drapes back, so they could gaze as the stars as they drifted off to sleep. Now, the dusty slate blue of the sky was beginning to lighten as the sun made it's approach to the horizon, sending up ribbons of crimson which soon would pierce the windows with a brilliant hue.Wake up, sleepyhead! Hikenai snuggled against Kel's back and kissed his shoulderblade. Soon those little moppets in the next room will be wailing for their breakfast, Neonea will be up, too, and our day will begin, love.
She pushed herself up on one elbow, cocked her head and listened. Sara and Matthew were already cooing in their little beds, awaiting the nurse who shortly would arrive. Hikenai threw back the blanket, struggled from beneath the twist of covers, and muttered to Kelster, I think I will just go on in and change their nappies. They'd like to be dry. She leaned over, kissed Kelster tenderly on his closed eyes, and playfully traced the tilt of his nose with her own. 'Twas the start of a new day!

Waking up to the sight of his wife looking at him, he rubbed his eyes. Sorry Hik, I have been a little tired of late. As he thought on her words, Neo being awake and Matthew and Sarah needing his wife's attention, he felt warm inside. With the spring sunshine now beaming through the window he pushed back the sheets covering him. Yes my love, I should make a move now myself, oh before you go to see to the babies, I need to whisper something I heard last night. As his wife moved closer to hear him whisper, he kissed her passionately. Chuckling to himself, he then whispered to her. Oh yes, I heard I loved you and I couldn't argue with that.
