Strange things happen to Osbert when he dances, stranger than the usual strange...

Steamy tendrils wisped from the children's cloaks and trailed away into the night's darkness as they stood laughing and shivering next to the fire. Osbert could swear that there were new stars in tonight's sky; maybe it was just the stars in his eyes that made it seem so. The awkward sense of self that he long carried seemed as if it too was melting away tonight...

He had Aef's hand in his, buried in his pocket for warmth. Hands tell so much, he thought; the callused feeling of strong hands, unafraid of work, the fingerprints he sought to memorize, the hands of both strength and tenderness, a life in each finger...a life soon to be entwined, like the invisible threads that kept the stars in their places...

As each wrapped arms around the other, it began, something being set free from within, meeting against, into the other, wrapping around the two, like the warmest coat, like the most invisible of crystal, surrounding their slow passage into this newness. The world sometimes stops...their dance is slow, has always been slow and hesitant. Time has been the steadfast one, as it has stood in patient silence, waiting for this...

As the night deepened, the flames leapt against the sky. At Kelster's direction, Sir James would continue to pile on the large logs, and the fire crackled and snapped, sparks flying and the wonderful scent of seasoned wood drifted through the night air. The children were allowed to sip mulled wine, and many toasts were made with the aged whiskey ---Kel had saved the best for last!

Hikenai was struck momemtarily silent by Lawrence's words, letting them register in her mind. The Wallace family had known Lawrence was their family member, but as so many children were often raised in the households of other family members, as was the custom among those who were somewhat highborn, Hikenai had not been certain exactly where Law fit in to the family tree. She hoped the procedure of dressing the children for the out door excursion hid her expression of surprise, for there was MUCH about her brother-in-law unbeknownst to her. For a moment she considered those long, long years gone by when Os was friend to her later long dead first husband, Thomas De Bevill. She remembered how Thomas had laughed and told her what a lothario Osbert was. It seemed he had all the ladies in Cornwall quite smitten when he was a young strappling, barely old enough in those days to shave!

She knew that Henry and Lawrence bore an incredible resemblance to each other.......could it really be.........And Hikenai, of all people knew, yes, it certainly could be! Was not she herself raised by her De Bevill aunt and uncle, when she was actually a De Peche----and that bit of information withheld from her? Sometimes lineages were withheld from children for quite compelling reasons. And Hikenai stared for a moment at Osbert, her eyebrow raised, a small soft smile on her lips.

"Now, children, let us go out!" Hikenai giggled. "I believe you all are bundled up quite snugly!"

With a final wave, hug and kiss to the family members, Lawrence grabs his things and heads out the door. It's a long journey to Kendal, but luckily he doesn't have to travel alone as he has met some friends that will go with him. Before he leaves, he whispers a word to Osbert

Hey Os, I think you might be my Da'. Have you ever noticed that Henry and I could mistaken for twins?

Lawrence heads out, while on the road he thinks he will try to count the host of children Os had.

Yes, Hik I shall stay in Westmorland. I am so young and there's so much to do and see. So while the spirit of adventure is upon me, I shall embrace it. After the weddings, I may think about traveling farther.

Relaxing, as she realizes Lawrence doesn't intend to move so very far away after all, Hikenai smiles at him.

"We have only so recently found you, it just broke my heart to think we would lose you so soon, Lawrence! If you are staying in Westmorland, there will be more opportunities for family gatherings."

She turned to Kelster and smiled, "I think the bon fire will be the perfect send off for Lawrence, Kelster! The musicians are out in the yard tuning up, and we can have dancing there, too! Sir James has made sure the kegs are in place, and the wood is already laid for the torch! Perhaps we should continue our celebration out there as we have finished our dinner?"

She smiled at Neonea, and Ceili and Donal. "Shall we bundle the children up snugly, and bring them out, or leave them with Blythe, who shall take them up to the nursery?"

She had not realized that Lawrence was leaving in the midst of the family celebration, and before the bon fire took place! Had she known he was anxious to leave Egremont she would have conducted an ongoing campaign to change his mind, but now it seemed too late. "Please won't you reconsider? You are dear to this family, and we have not gotten to see near enough of you!" Hikenai's plaintive request accompanied her facial expression of positive expectation. She just was convinced Law would change his mind.....

So much has been going on and Lawrence still hasn't been shown to a room in the castle. No matter now. He saluted the happy couples once more, hugged his family members and grabbed his bags as it was finally time for him to leave Egremont. He had sold all of his fields and there was nothing left tying him to the place.

"I will certainly miss you all." He whispered as a tear began to fall from his cheek. This was the only family and friends he had known and now he was leaving it all behind to settle roots somewhere else.

Breggitta gave the lady that joined them a quick curtsy and smiled. Thank ye m'Lady but I dare not burden you. You seem to have a lot of people to tend to I wouldn't want to be a bother. Since me mum's passing I been makin' my way. Breggitta edge closer to the fire to get warmer before going back into the night. Although that room over the stable is a wee bit drafty and the stove has room for only one piece of wood, when one can afford wood. She drank down the warm tea and then introduced herself. My name is Breggitta. Thank you for the offer. You have a very lovely home and it is warm in here.

The warmth came not just from the large hearth but from the love you could feel in the room. One man she had noticed listening closely as she told the tail of her mother's demise. As Osbert stood, his heart felt lightened of its load, the miles upon his bones quietly faded, far and away, far from the beginnings. How could he have waited so long to have seen what was in front of him the whole time, he wondered...

It was high time this family felt the many blessings it has; from the humble beginnings, when he and his brother first began the search for family, the quest has come to this, a roomful, gathered and united, others still, on their journeys, searching for their own fortunes, no matter the distance or the closeness, this family is one. One. What all of the searching of the heart hopes, no, yearns to find. A oneness of self, a oneness with another, a oneness with one's blood. A long forgotten sense filled the space around him.

Peace.

As he stood, momentarily tongue tied at all that had just transpired, his mind raced as fast as the fastest wind, his life stood with an absolute stillness, like ice, like stars permanently dotted in the heavens. Inna looked at the ring and lost her breath a moment. It was absolutely beautiful! She held her hand as steady as she could as Oblio slid the ring onto her finger. The lump in her throat grew as tears of happiness filled her eyes. It's beautiful, O! I shall wear this ring proudly, as it represents our love... whole and unbroken. She waited for him to rise and hugged him tightly. I love you, Oblio Wallace. She said, then she kissed him as she never had before.

Nothing could have prepared Hikenai for the surprise of hearing her brother-in-law propose to Aefernum! Osbert had, for years, been such a confirmed bachelor, but Lady Aef had entered his life, and heart, and truly turned everything about! Os was happier than Hikenai had known him to be in a long, long while, and Hik had waited, with her heart pounding, waiting for Aeffie to say yes! Hik was nearly weak with relief when Aef answered, but then Hikenai realized, the poor girl was probably as taken by surprise as they all were at Osbert's marriage proposal.
Having risen, to join Kelster and Lawrence in the foyer to welcome the newest arrival, Hikenai saw Kelster leading a lovely lady into the dining room. He was seeing to her comfort, and Hikenai thought there was something very familiar about the woman but she could'nt put her finger on it.
Hikenai heard Breggitta say,

She rose to introduce herself to the lady, but Oblio's announcement stopped Hikenai dead in her tracks! Smiling largely, Hik was completely bowled over!
Audrey Rose shouted out,

And Hik joined her, and the rest of the family, lifting her glass high and echoing , "HUZZAH HUZZAH HUZZAH!!!!"

Breggitta followed the gentlemen into a large, warm room.. The faces she saw were happy and there was a celebration of a sort going on. There was a face she recognized. Lord Osbert, the man that had met Niki and her in Manchester to escort them to Egremont. She smiled softly, he was proposing to his Lady Aefernum. There was laughter and merriment here, unlike she had ever experienced. She smiled and stood to the wayside until she could deliver her message and the funds.

Edging closer to the hearth, the young woman began to feel the warmth from the fire. Her thoughts drifted.

His voice brought her back from musing and she addressed the man she knew to be the Count of Westmorland. Breggitta curtsied. My name, your Grace? It is Breggitta... she pause not sure of herself. My mum told me, me Da's sire name was Wallace. Although I never knew him. And, thank you, a mug of tea would be nice. A blush rose to her cheeks when she realized she was chattering on. All the man ask was your name, you silly girl, she chided herself.

She smiled readily at the young man the Count had gestured to join them. She had seen him in the tavern a few times and he was also at the door when she arrived.

Watching as his brother Osbert, got down on one knee and proposed to Aef. Kelster waited in anticipation for her reply when he heard a knock at the door. He Quickly went to see who it was before lady Aefernum could answer.

Opening the door his eyes fell upon a beautiful young lady who strangely had the Wallace look about her. He noticed she looked very cold and tired. Smiling at her and thinking she must be one of the guests, he ushered her inside. Please come in quickly out of the cold. As he led her into the sitting room, Aef replied to Os, "Yes, I would be honored to." Grabbing a glass very quickly he raised it into the air. Three cheers for my brother and lady Aefernum. Hip, hip, hooray!

Remembering the young lady he had brought into the sitting room he turned to her. What would you like to drink, miss, erm, sorry , what is your name?

Spotting Lawrence , he gestured to him to come over.

A young woman approached the high portico that was the main entrance to Wallace Castle. She had traveled far to the north of England. The closer Breggitta came to Hadrian's Wall she could feel something drawing her. She had been entrusted with a gift for the Egremont port. This was to be the last act in her young life. But it seemed Jah had other plans for her future.

Breggitta stood shivering at the heavy door in the poor ragged cloak that covered her slender body. Pulling it tightly around her, she looked for a bell pull or a guard she could ask for entrance. Life is not worth living any more, she thought. I will deliver the funds to the harbour master and be on my way. She raised a a cold fist and wrapped hard in the door.

Audie had enjoyed the meal and the company of her newfound family. This holiday had been the best yet! Now her uncle Osbert has stood up to make a toast. To Lady Aefernum! she cried with the rest, then sipped her drink. As she set it down again, Uncle Os bent on one knee and jproposed to the Lady Aefernum. Audie clapped and waited for Aef's reply.

As the feast wound down, and belts were loosened to give the menfolk-and a few of the womenfolk-a bit of extra belly space, Osbert rose from his seat, with goblet in hand, and called for a toast.

"Another year past, another awaits. We grow in love, and our bonds become even stronger. I am twice blessed today, first, to be surrounded by all of you, and second..."

"Second for the beginnings of a new life." He looked at Aef, and felt the biggest lump in his throat that he'd ever felt...

"Aef, I've been dragging my feet for the longest, always finding one excuse or another, always skittish and shy. You've had the patience of Job, and have always given me both leeway and rope to sort things out..."

"We've been companions forever it seems; you've filled this man's heart with your kindness, and have kept my thread of sanity intact through some tough goings. For that, I am forever in your debt."

"A toast to the Lady Aefernum!"

As the goblets were raised, and the hearty cry of a family's cheers rang out, Osbert took a quick sip, and reached into his jacket pocket.

"With that said, My Lady, my love, with Jah and family as my witnesses, my heart has as last found its peace." He bent to his knee, and took her hand in his. "Aef, I humbly ask for your hand to join with mine in matrimony; will you honor this child of Jah and find it in your heart to live out your days together as one?"

He took the ring from its box, and held it to her finger...

Inna turned at a sound in the hall and caught sight of the men returning. Inna looked at Os and smiled, giving a small curtsy at his nod of acknowledgement. She smiled as she watched him gaze dreamily upon Aef and walk over to kiss her. They are so in love... Inna thought as her gaze turned to settle upon Oblio, who was now heading her way. Again, her knees grew weak and a lump formed in her throat.

She smiled widely and greeted him with a kiss on the cheek.

I thought you got lost in the great halls of the castle! Inna said with a smile. She slipped her hand in his and gestured towards the table. Shall we?

At that moment, she heard Hik offer her to try the wine. Inna parted with Oblio for a moment to accept a glass. It had a sweet aroma that made her mouth water. She took a sip... the flavor was sweet and robust, yet the wine was smooth, almost dry. Very delightful, Hik. she said with a smile. She excused herself and returned to Oblio, offering him a sip of her wine.

Alice May had out done herself. The feast was an abundance of food that would feed this large family well! I brought the children in, helping them take their places at the great table. Lady Peterborough and the Captain seemed happy their twins had taken a liking to me. I turned to Neonea and winked, smiling into her dear blue eyes, and whispered, "I heard you sing your carol, Neonea! Well done! Well done, indeed!"



I motioned for the servants to bring in more of the dishes after the Wallace family and guests sat down. There was more wine on hand, for the Count had made sure he had only his finest, most aged bottles brought up from the cellar.



I eased Sara and Matthew into the baby chairs which placed them on eye level with the adults. Lord Kel and Lady Hik were the only people I ever knew who actually ate with their babies, and did not relegate them to the nursery at meal time! The Count had special chairs with trays and long legs made for the babes and they ate their finger food as their parents consumed their meals. Ceili, Donal and Neonea were in their places, and I turned to Lord Osbert, wondering when Allysum and the boys would arrive. They would surely come downstairs soon! I turned to Lady Hikenai and curtsied, "May I assist you further, my lady?"

From the sounds ringing down and around and echoing from the high walls, O and I made our way to the dining hall. What a great sight, I thought, all of these wonderful people, the passel of children all done up and starry eyed. This is my family, and a damned fine family it is!

"Looks like we're just in time, nephew; the meal's laid out, the womenfolk are here. Check out Inna, would you; you really got yourself a looker there," I teased him. I caught her eye, and a fine eye she has, and gave a nod to her, but today my eye isn't meant for her...

When I saw Aef seated at the table, it was as if everything else in the room stood perfectly still. The butterflies in my stomach started fluttering, like they do whenever I'm in her presence. except this time, this time was so different...

After running the gauntlet of hugs and backslaps, we made our way to the empty seats beside the two women, O with his Inna, and I with Aef. I bent down kissed her, and as I spoke, the butterflies escaped...

"I do hope today will be the best day of your life..." I said to her...

Audie had never seen a table set such as Auntie Hik had set hers. The amount of food would have fed nearly the entire villiage where she was from in York. And the decorations were dazzling. The wine and and food were going to her head though, so she was glad that there was small ale available. She tasted everything, the food, the drinks, the desserts. She couldn't have been happier than right now, with all ther family around her.

I got the old coot upstairs and poured some Drunk Begone down in him, smacked him around a time or two, and he was good as new, if it's possible to get an old geezer good as new. Good thing he didn't take his boots off and leave them layin' around anywhere, he'd never find 'em.
Okay, Uncle, it's time you got yourself right. You gotta stand up straight and do what you need to do. Man up time!
I heard him take a couple of wheezy breaths and he kinda looked like a balloon puffin' up. Dang he's tall when he stand up straight. Must be the hair.

Kelster said,

She laughed and slipped her arms about Kels slim waist, leaned against him, kissed his cheek, and whispered, " I would love to fatten you up, my dearest...for I know the perfect exercise...." Hikenai giggled mischievously knowing Kelsters' vanity would not allow for much weight to gather about his waist

Hik slipped her arm through Kelster's and lay her head on his shoulder as they gazed upon the dining room. The foods were being steadily brought from the kitchen, where Alice May, and her kitchen staff, were hurriedly finishing everything, and getting the dishes out to the dining room while all was hot.



The buffet tables were laden with dishes, both rich deserts, and main courses were displayed with mouthwatering artfulness.



The meat pies were succulent and placed upon the sideboard, along with rich, red wine.



"Soon Lizzy and Aef will be down from upstairs, Kel....and I am hoping Osbert will have the boys come from their rooms soon, and Allysum! Where is she? I am surprised young Master James is not here already, cutting up and giving Alice May a fit!"

Hik laughed and turned toward the door, "Ah, here are Aef and Lizzy now!"

Time is a fluid, strange thing. Sometimes it flies ahead, slippery like water and you sit there wondering where it went. And other times it is thick and syrupy, hardly moving at all.

Aef thought about this as she explored the upper levels of the Wallace Castle. Her dress dancing around her as her hurried movements made the soft, light fabric flow. Her long dark hair was braided in a tight festive bun, one she had spent most of the mid-day to get just right. A frown, bathed in flickers of light through the halls, was apparent on her face, growing more and more serious as she passed the rooms. 'Ohh, where is it,' she annoyingly said to herself in her mind. 'I am already late!'

Her squirrels had chosen this day to play a game with her, having stolen and hidden the ornate, jeweled comb she had planned to decorate her bun. This was her first real christomas with what she thought of as her family, and she wanted her presence to reflect how she felt on the inside; beautiful and glowing. 'Time really is running away from me now,' she thought as her nose registered the delicious fumes of the feast waiting below.

"AHA!" she exclaimed, on all four, her head nearly touching the floor, as she found her comb under one of the guest beds. She heard some high-pitched tweets behind her, scurrying down the hall. Her furry friends clearly worried about facing a reprimand, but Aef just smiled. Today was no day for that!

Placing the comb in her bun, and smoothening her dress, she hurried downstairs to meet the others. As she got closer, the atmosphere of fun, love and care embraced her, making her smile.

After downing a few drams with Chris, Kelster felt warm inside and hearing all the chatter, the laughter and the joy of the others, for once he could forget the troubles of being the Count. Hearing Oblio speak to OS and call him a bag of old bones made him smile. He walked over towards them and put one hand one each of there shoulders. You too are looking a bit shifty, what have you got planned?

Upon hearing his wife call him, he walked towards the dining room and his eyes fell upon the feast that Hik had laid on the table. Well my love, it looks like in 1460 I may have to add a notch to my belt with all the wondrous food you have before us today.

Inna walked over to Hik and took one of the little pies and a napkin. She motioned for Oblio to join her.

They look delicious! Inna said to Hik with a smile. Then she bit into the pie and was even more pleased. She savored every bite, before she complimented the chef.

That was a delightful treat, Hik and your house is amazing! I just love the decorations. I also love the sound of the children's laughter. It has been a while since I've spent the holidays with a family. she smiled as her eyes wandered to find Oblio.

I leapt off the table, still blushing and feeling the excitement of the applaud, the proud smiles that revealed off my parent’s faces as they gazed up at me. I smiled so largely that my cheekbones pushed my summer-sky colored eyes into squints. Soon, a new comer joined us, and I recognized him as the man from the tavern. He carried with him orange lilies, which were so rare in the dead of winter. I couldn’t believe he had found them. He apologized that he couldn’t bring anything and I went to his side as Kelster gave him drink, and Hikenai spoke to him. I slipped my tiny hand into Wirc’s and tugged him into the crowd so he could enjoy the festivities, and then I released him to go and play with my cousins.

I took the lovely flowers from Lady Hik and staightaway went to the kitchen to put them in water. Alice May was there, as usual, fussing about the little meat pies and dessert pies that would be sent up to the sitting room. Finger foods they were, just little bits to eat before the grand feast later! She slapped Sir James Bland's hand playfully, as he popped a pie in his mouth, washing it down with a gulp of Sweet Woodruff tea.

Ye have sich a sweet tooth, there, Sir James, I giggled, Lord Kel and the family would like some, too! I noticed the gleam in his eye, for he pretended to be chastened, but was not! He slipped yet another pie into his palm, and pretended to turn away as he stuffed it into his mouth! I laughed again. Christomas was hard work for ye, Sir James, and I see you cut all the wood for the Twelfth Night bonfire yourself! So, now Alice, he needs a bit of sustenance!I could not help but tease Sir James, for he had helped Lord Kelster cut the magnificent Christomas tree in the great hall, and had climbed ladder after ladder helping helping Lady Hik hang the garland around every entrance to the castle. It was hard work!

I must go back to see if I can be of help in the sitting room I told them. The children are all there, Alice, and I must go up and make sure the bedchambers are all prepared for the house guests. I do love it when the Wallaces have their house parties and we celebrate for days on end!

Happily accepting her shot of whiskey, Hikenai watched as Kel embraced Henry. Their handsome faces glowed with affection for each other. His nephew had made Kelster so proud! And Hikenai was overjoyed Henry could be with them this holiday season. She and Henry sat down, and Hikenai grinned at Audrey and smiled as she patted the seat beside her, and looked at the young woman invitingly. Then, as she listened to Henry, Hik sipped her whiskey and pondered his works with a serious expression on her face. He took his responsibilities very seriously, and could be counted on to perform his job with no regard of his personal feelings. When it came to security, Henry put Westmorland first!

"I know exactly what you mean, Henry," she replied, and nodded at Audrey, who was knight's squire, for she knew Audrey understood, too. "We must pray, and must stay strong physically and spiritually. With Jah's grace, we can continue on."

Looking about the room, she saw Kelster lift his shot glass to propose a toast, and Hik did the same. "To a bright future for all of us!" Hik echoed, and downed her whiskey.

Auntie Hik opened the big door and we all seemed to tumble in after Henry. Audie just stood in the doorway looking at all the decorations. The KoE castle wasn't decorated this year. She was coming from the Westmorland Council chambers, having settled the animals in their stalls after feeding them corn and grain. She had traveled from Penrith on the advice of Sir James Bland, and was now walking up the walk to Wallace Castle. She hadn't been here before, but it was easy to get directions from those in Egremont, as everyone knew the Wallaces well.

As she came to the great door, she noticed someone standing outside waiting. It was Inna, Oblio's friend. How wonderful.

Ceili made a cute lil curtsy, saying, Happy Cwistomas, Untle Kel. She smiled her pretty smile. Being nearly 4 years old, she was a darling girl and Donal was trying so hard to be like Chris, it was almost funny at times.

I would love a mulled wine, Kel. Is Hik around? I can't believe that this time last year we were still in Barnstaple, planning for our wedding and hearing about your twins, yet to be born. Now, we are here we are, all in Egremont, celebrating together this year.

The ride over from the Manor was easy. Not like the trips from the manor to Launceston castle in Cornwall. We all arrived comfortably in the carriage, pulled by Tommy and Duchess. Either of the horses could have pulled the carriage alone, but with Chris being Captain, we both thought it best that he have his own horse. But not wanting to leave I or the children stranded, we also brought Duchess, if the need arose.

The five of us alighted from the carriage at Wallace Castle, and walked to the door. Chris knocked on the door (more like he was pounding the walls in ) and we waited for entrance. Donal, wanting to be just like his dad, tried to pound on the door as well, only eliciting a small knock.

Never once set foot in this castle Oblio thought as he made his way up the long lane. I guess it's time to pay the family a visit and get shed of all these presents I got for the chilrens. Hope they got something warm to drink and something to fill this pit in my belly. Hope Inna shows up, this won't ever work without her. Her and Osbert and Aef.

Each room in the house was filling with Christomas decor and Hikenai and Neonea bustled through each day, baking cookies, figgy pudding, preparing wassail and humming old familiar carols as they happily went about their work. They would be entertaining friends during the holidays! There were those near and dear, like Aefernum who would be joining them, as well as some new friends, like Manula and Evenice, the Fretalians who were taking refuge in Westmorland from Fury's violence and cruelty. The family would gather and they would all celebrate----especially celebrate their union with the De Peche's---Hikenai's family of origin. This was a special Christomas for Hik, as her family ties became even more strengthened and dear.

"Come, my lovies! Let's go show Papa your new Christomas suits!" Sara Cat and Matthew would both be one year olds come Twelfth Night, and Hikenai was filled with awe each time she held her babes. They were so healthy and happy! They brought such joy to the family and each day with the two rambuctious twins was a day for laughter and fun. Hikenai was enormously proud of Matthew, for although he was only one, he was a big strong lad who looked to be older than twelve months. Matty had walked early, and was already babbling in babyish fashion calling his papa 'Da' and Felix, the tavern cat, 'Fee'. He had yet to say Mama but Hikenai knew it was only a matter of time before he began to speak in full sentences, for all he was only a year old. She suspected he inherited his vocal proclivity from Kelster, with a smattering of her brother Chrisiusmaximus thrown in!



The twins were dressed in outfits of red, and Neonea had a new crimson dress, as well.........

Lady Penningdam had washed the little girl's hair and brushed it, as they sat before the hearth, and the long finger curls were completely straightened out, fanning Neonea's shoulders delicately.

"Darling, you are very lovely!" Hikenai murmured to the child, kissing her little forehead and hugging her gently. "Neo, we must begin our invitations to the Wallace house party and ball we shall have during Christomas season! And then.....the grand finale will be the birthday of the twins, the day after Twelfth Night." For a moment, a dark look passed across Hikenai's face. They were not sure of Neo's birthday, had never learned of it, and had not, during the entire year she had spent with them, celebrated the child's birth! Well, we shall have to fix that, Hikenai thought adamantly. But she turned her mind back to the matters at hand. "Let's go find Papa, children, and show him your Christomas finery, and then we will begin making our invitations!"

Hikenai and the children hurried into the foyer, and proceeded up the stairwell to find Kelster. She was happy that the castle was so beautifully decorated for the season.

Well i am sure we can find you a little something Neo. Passing his daughter a small glass of mulled wine and some roast chestnuts he then turned to his wife. Well Hik, it's time to get started. I am setting off in the morning to pick a tree and Christomas starts right here and now.

I looked up at Kelster as he spoke about Mulled wine and chestnuts. I'd had my share of chestnuts but never mulled wine. The idea of any type of wine drawing a grin to my face. A grin that remained as the conversation took place, my blue eyes growing wide in delight with the mention of balls, and decorations. The anticipation I felt was clear as I rolled to my knees and shuffled toward them just a little so I could listen in that much better on their conversation. Hikenai turned toward me and questioned me about gifts. I had received so many lovely things just a year ago. I shook my head,

"I don't want anything, Mama. I am very happy with what I have."

I sat quietly, listening to Hikenai and Kelster talk. Though much of it went well above and over my head, I smiled still. I was close to the fire, enjoying warm milk before bed time. I liked the way they talked to each other, how Hikenai smiled at Kelster, and how he in turn was so transparent in his adoration of Hikenai. I smiled gleefully at my parents, although the idea of Christomas was something I still did not quite understand. Before Hikenai and Kelster, I never celebrated, for we were too poor to do anything beyond mass. I did not get the gifts or the luxury of such fancy feasts or the loving embrace of family members. Though, somewhere, I missed those from Lanark who did lovingly embrace me as one of Scotland's daughters. Last Christomas seemed such a distant memory to me, as if it had happened ages ago, or somewhere in a dream. I barely recalled Hikenai's swollen belly. I had been so malnourished and hungry, with tangled curls and dirty skin. Hikenai and Kelster had changed my life, and memories of my past seemed more like the dreams I had when I slept. I remembered them, but then again, I did not remember them. I no longer dwelled on memories because I had the day to look forward to, and even more than that, I had tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that to complete with my family. Relishing in this, I tucked my knees to my chest and draped my arms over them as I listened.

Hikenai had settled in a thickly padded chair before the fireplace. She was thankful for the warmth of the flames, though earlier in the day the sun had warmed the water of the lake, and she and Neo had shed their jackets and even waded in along the shore. Now though, Neonea was snugly tucked into bed, as were the twins, and Hikenai was swathed in a blanket of the softest lambs wool. She loved evenings at home at Wallace Castle, and she kept returning to what Kelster had said earlier in the day, I think it is time we started to plan for Christomas, what do you two think?

"Kel, this Christomas I'm not with child....and you know what that means?"

She looked at Kel in anticipation and then laughed, "No, not that!" She giggled at his enthusiastic response to her statement. "I don't mean we should work on another babe just yet...although the getting of them is great fun...." Hikenai's eyes gleamed mischievously. "I meant this Christomas I will be better able to join in on all the festivities, for I missed out on them last year. I sat in the wagon while everyone skated, and I drank milk while others drank spiced wine. I was so huge I could not dance, and you know I love to dance with you! It was difficult to stay on my feet long enough to welcome all our guests, and my feet swelled so I could hardly wear my shoes!" Hikenai laughed at the memory, though at the time it had not been easy, for she was so huge with the twins she could not rest, and poor Kelster could not rest either, for he had only a small space upon the bed in which to sleep, though he had never complained one time. Hikenai was bolstered by a great many pillows, and she was up and down all night, every night, during the holiday season for she was so near to giving birth. The babes had been born the day after Twelfth Night, and mercifully all had gone well.

" It will be a wonderful Christomas and we have Neonea and the twins, and all our family to join in the celebration this year."

Hikenai gazed happily into into the fire and continued dreaming about Christomas at Wallace Castle. Being with Kelster, Neonea, and the babes, made every Christomas perfect----- but this year, her de Peche family members were now living in Egremont, and that completed her happiness.

As Hikenai took Kel's hand to step down from the wagon, she thought happily that these were the days she lived for----just to be with her family, to be with Kelster and do things as a family with Neonea. Soon the twins would be old enough to join in, and that would be a happy day for Hik, and Neonea, too, she knew. Neonea loved her little brother and sister, and she enjoyed taking on the role of 'big sister' and teaching the twins things.

Now, standing on the shore of Egremont's lake, she followed the direction of Kelster's gaze, far across the water to Osberts' camp area.

"Yes, darling, later we should go see Osbert, and maybe take him some of the fish we have fried!" She grinned down at Neo. "You will love the island, Neo!"

"Well, I do hope Cuthbert, James, Roland and Alyssum come home soon." Hikenai said, looking at Kel over Neonea's head. "Your Uncle Osbert has been so busy with council duties and the like.....and the cousins....." Hikenai sighed, for it had been far too long since Neonea had seen her little cousin James. "I don't know when they shall return to the castle. It has been too, too long!"

The wagon clattered across the bridge of the sallyport, and Hikenai waved to Sir James up in the guard tower. The morning was early yet, with the breeze cool against her cheeks, yet the sun warm upon her head.

"I am a bit worried about Lady Lizzy, as well, for she was in town a few weeks ago, then just as mysteriously left!" Hikenai smiled reassuringly at Neo, chiding herself for expressing any worry before the child. " It might be she has merely entered the church for a rest!"

Hikenai turned to the hedgerow and saw two redbirds swoop down and light on a bramble. "Yes, Kel, Christomas will be here before we know it. The snows will come and it will be very merry to have our family all about us!"

Pray Jah that shall be the case, thought Hikenai, and we shall all be merry and contented.

"Papa is waiting for us in the wagon, and the trip to the lake is a lovely one! There is an island out in the middle of the lake, and Uncle Osbert use to have a camp set up there. He constructed a little tent, and made what he called a sweat lodge! He and Papa would get into it, build a fire, and pour water on the big stones in the firepit. Then they would get really, really hot and sweat.....um.......it made them relax....." Neonea and Hikenai descended the stairway to the back entrance of the castle, and Hik chattered happily. "Uncle Os use to spend quite a bit of time on the island with the boys. Maybe Papa will take us to the island later this afternoon. I think the boat is still at the little dock at the lake...."

They arrived at the wagon, and Hikenai's eyes shone with glee. "Kel, we are ready.....here you go Neo!" She lifted the child up into Kelster's waiting arms. "We are going to have such a fine time!"

Excited, I ran to Hikenai's side, my little hand slipping into hers as I looked up to her. I anticipated the day out with them, and the chance to learn how to fish. I wondered what it would be like to fish, for I had watched fishermen on the shores and on the boats, but I'd never done it myself. Sometimes it looked boring, and other times it looked like fun. It didn't matter how it went though, because I would be with Kelster and Hikenai, and that was enough to leave a smile on my face and angst to start the day.

"Let's go, mama!"

Alice May had prepared a feast, and Hikenai knew the food, the blankets and the supplies they would need for laying a quick fire were already loaded on the wagon. She heard Kel's excited voice drift back up the door from the back stairwell, urging them on, and heard the horses snort impatiently as she snatched up the carpetbag she had pulled out from the wardrobe to hold the change of clothes for Neonea and herself.

"If it grows hot this afternoon, Neonea, and we have caught all the fish Papa intends us to catch for our supper, maybe we can take a swim in the lake, too!" She placed thick towels upon the stack of clothes, and shoving them in the bag, along with some toiletries, and combs for their hair, she turned to Neo with a big smile.

"We are off!" She reached her hand out for the child's little one, and they turned toward the hallway and the back stairwell, where below, next to the kitchen windows, Kelster waited in the wagon. "Let's not keep Papa waiting any longer!"

The mornings were coming later and later, and it was harder to wake up, and it was awfully cold at night and in the early mornings. When I hopped out of bed I quickly got dressed before anyone could shuffle in to help me.



When I was through getting dressed, I grabbed the brush and started working it through my blond hair, not as well as someone else would do, but to me, I thought I was doing a fine job. Of course, anyone who saw the back of my head would see that I'd missed a knot or two. Putting the brush down, I got up and went to the door, opened it and started to head out of it.

"I wonder how many fish we catch?" She thought of the fabulous lake outside Egremont, and how it was teeming with fish! Neonea would be very excited to provide them a fine supper, and Hikenai knew the child would love being outside in the bright autumn sun. "I can hardly wait to go, Kelster!"



"Maybe we can go explore the old castle at the lake! Neonea would probably find that ancient structure fun to run about in." Hikenai drew on her robe, and passed into the dressing room, calling back over her shoulder. "You are right, Kel, we should make a day of it. I will dress as quickly as I can, and we will collect Neonea and be off!"

Hikenai wandered into the study, leaned over Kel's chair, and slipped her arms about him, placed her cheek against his, and gave him a swift kiss.

"A t'pence for your thoughts, babe," she murmured, and rubbed her cheek against his warm face. Lately much had seemed on her husband's mind. They had solved the mystery at Muncaster, and made a quick trip to Hawkshead, seeing all was in order at the estate there, then returned to Egremont, and the grueling pace. That was the only way Kel knew to work---to work hard, and shoulder his responsibilities thoroughly. Often Hikenai wished they could arrange more time for play. She smiled at him, and swiftly kissed him. "You look very serious, Kelster."

As Hikenai joined her family in the kitchen, she was suddenly seized with excitement, for Lizzy had returned home!

"Ah, Neonea!" Hikenai called out, snatching the little one's hand up, and pulling her into the kitchen, laughing and extending her other arm to her cousin. "Tis Lady Lizzy, Neo! This is papa's own cousin!" Hikenai was thrilled to see Lizzy, for she had not yet met their darling daughter Neonea, nor had Lizzy seen the twins. First things first, though, Hik thought, as she hugged Lizzy, and then held her out at arms length.

"Ye look wonderful, Lizzy! It is so good to see you again, and to have you home once more!"

She smiled at Kel, and pulled Neonea forward. "This is Neonea, our daughter, Lizzy. I can't wait for you to get to know her, for Neo is our angel. Sassy is here as well, as is Henry...... And now you can meet the twins, at last! Sara Catherine and Matthew Kelster! They are asleep in the nursery!"

I wasn't playing with Evelyn today. No, I was out hiding in the woods, as I had been. I was out in the edge of the woods playing with my new companion; a little wolf pup. I had been feeding it and playing with it for weeks. If I timed it right, I culd sneak into the kitchen for slabs of raw meat to bring back to it. I hadn't told anyone, not yet. Not even Evelyn.

I looked up at the sun above and frowned, kissed the top of the wolf pups head, tucked him back near the tree trunk, an covered him with the blanket I had snuck out. Of course, he didn't really need one; but who's to tell a six year old child that she can't cover a puppy up for night?

Hurrying back to the house, I brushed off my dress and tugged leaves out of the tight curls that framed my heart shaped face, and went in through the servants entrance.

Alice looked at me, propped her hands on her hips and stood in front of me. I paused, looking up at her, quiet. She stepped aside and let me pass, patting me on the head as I moved beyond her, in time to see a woman, and Kelster holding out his arms to hug her.

Lizzy arrived in the late afternoon, tired, a little windswept, aching from the long ride, and not just a little worried that she might not receive a warm welcome, having been absent for some months, with, to her knowledge, no explanation as to her whereabouts.
She had rode up to the stables un noticed, except for by the stable boys, who grinned at each other and winked, and looked away embarrassed when she glowered at them. She handed the old mare over to a likely looking young lad, with instructions to let the old girl eat her fill, and with no explanation of where or how the animal had been acquired… It was best not to dwell on where Lizzy acquired things. Especially horses, hence the name of her regular mount… Twoc.
She then entered Wallace castle by the kitchen doors, having decided to keep a low profile, and hoping to sneak up to her rooms, in order to check that they WERE still her rooms, and in the hopes that her maid was still in service!

Fire stay insite and hear that family is coming. He wait until the visit is insite. Then he see that it is a woman with two childeren.

Fire go up his knees and say hello to the childeren. Donal get a rub over the globe from Fire and his sis get a hand from Fire.

Then Fire get up and is a little higher then the woman. He give her a hand and introduce his to the lady.

''Greetings my name is Fire Wallace. Nice to meet you. I hope you have a nice travel behind?''

"Get in here!"

Hikenai hurried her sister-in-law, the children, and their young nursemaid Sara into the foyer.

"It's not everyday my sister-in-law and niece and nephew arrive home to Egremont! I am so happy that you wrote me, while you were enroute Boo. It gave me so much to look forward to, you see. And since Kelster and I returned from our trip to Muncaster and Hawkshead, I have longed for my family...."

She gestured about the great hall. "Our home is always open to you and the rest of our family. It makes me happier than I can tell you--- just to know you and Chris and the children, and Misty and Lily have come to make Egremont home."

Fire heard what his aunt say.

''I'm really sorry that I interference you then. I was thinking he want to kill you. I want not that you hurt you. So sorry I din't now that. I hope you have then a good conversation. But beware please.''

Then Fire ask to Hikenai or they have family portrait, that he can see maybe recognize someone.

"Excuse me Fire, but I believe Thackery is in the back with Kelster and Daniel, and I hear someone at the door."

Turning from her nephew, or cousin, (Hikenai is not quite sure how Fire and Kelster are related, but she feels certain they are.) She quickly passed from the sitting room to the foyer. I wonder where Henry and Sassy got off to? Hikenai glanced up the stairway and then down the corridor past the library to the Wallace castle kitchen, but the rooms seemed strangely deserted. They may have gone to the garden, she thought, and she hoped Neonea was with them. The dear child might even be who is at the door, and Hikenai felt certain that was probably who it was. She grasped the door handle and swung the massive door back, prepared to snatch Neonea up and smother her with kisses. Instead, 'twas Boo!

"Roberta! You are here!" Hikenai's face shone with delight as she embraced her sister-in-law. "Come in, come in!!! I am so happy to see you and the children! This is a such a treat!"

"Don't worry, Fire, they are traveling I am sure, with a Blood Oath Brotherhood retinue, and I am sure they are safe."

Hikenai smiled at her cousin, and wondered if she should speak of something that took place weeks ago, outside the church of Egremont, in an alleyway.

She was touched at how protective her young cousin was, but he did not seem to understand that she was a veteran of war herself, and could fight with many cut and thrust weapons. She also knew all manner of restraints, and while she could not defend herself in fighting a man, she could, if given the proper element of surprise, put a 22o pound man into such a restraint that he could not move an inch! Though she weighed only 120 pounds, the muscles in Hik's arms and legs were like steel. She was extremely strong. She took a breath and went on.

"Fire, I know you thought I was in danger of being hurt by that man, Mythrind......when we were outside the Church of Egremont, and I first met him. But actually, he and I were wanting to discuss something. He was nervous, I was nervous......and I think it probably looked more dangerous than it was."

Hikenai smiled at Fire and said in a light tone of voice, "I have arranged a meeting for him, Kelster and myself at the tavern. Don't worry about it, please. He is no threat to me, and I want to hear what he has to say."

The meeting would be held in one of the private rooms at Kel's tavern, and Hikenai and Kelster were curious to learn what Mythrind had to tell them.

The next day, I was still so excited to be in Egremont, I wrote another letter to Hik.



Another pigeon was sent on to Wallace Castle.

Listening as the man spoke , Kelster thought of the events at Muncaster castle. Nothing would surprise him now and this man's story, although most would find hard to believe, he knew something was occurring just as the man said it was. After he read the journal, he looked at the manacled stranger and nodded to him.


Don't worry about the door my good man, strange things have been happening of late in this castle and elsewhere. Now, the trail of ink, would you lead the way I am most interested in this book.


With that Kelster held out his hand to gesture the stranger led the way to.... where, he did not know.

Suddenly after Daniel's shockingly disturbing exclamation, a man, perhaps another of the castle's kin came from the back door that faced the 6'5 metal and wood casted bar door, he entered the room, asking questions of the like when something peculiar happens. He looked rather the same age as Daniel, except not bald, fat, or with facial hair. He had a very noble appearance though, the same with the woman he had met when he had awoken in the castle, the only small difference was that the man looked more charismatic.

Then Daniel spoke up to the man in a very cautious tone.

"Why g'day there, I know this may sound crazy to you, but I have awoken randomly in this castle... I don't know who I am, or why I'm even here... The only thing that I remember was me seeing this journal with my name on it, and then I meet one of the castle's inhabitants. Now the odd thing is, none of your books look like my journal, and it's telling me to follow a pattern of red ink..."

"Which I have found..."

"You may take a look at my journal, but I don't think there is anything worth looking at but that simple declaration of follow the red ink."

Daniel then gives the man his journal opened up with his name in it and the odd declaration on page 1, hoping that he sees sense in this, Daniel continues to chat about the red ink.

"I humbly believe this pattern of red ink will decipher physical evidence of my well being inside of this castle. I only ask to look around your castle for awhile in search of my origins."

Daniel pauses momentarily...

"Oh and not to be a bad news sort of person, but your giant locked door has flung open on it's own where the red ink is heading to. I think it's just the harsh winds coming from the windows though..."

"Well....I suppose you could...couldn't hurt, and maybe it would be of use to you! So come with me, and I will show you to the library." Hikenai gestured toward the hall, and surveyed Daniels' demeanor. " I can see you appear to be a gentleman and a scholar. But, the manner in which you appeared was most startling. Is that your usual mode of travel? Arriving in such a manner could alarm some people...." But Hik remembered her own amazing teleport from old Carlisle to Egremont several months ago, and Father Prof's gravity defying gallop on the ceiling of the church, and so she felt more accepting of the extraordinary that she might have felt in the past. And now, she eyed Daniel with more curiosity than suspicion.

Hikenai quickly excused herself from the others, and she and Daniel proceeded down the hallway.

"The red ink......I have not noticed red ink in any of the books here at the castle."

They entered the library and Hik motioned for Daniel to examine the collection of their books.

After Daniel was searching through the genealogical records of the Wallaces, he heard one of the castle's kin exclaim a question. Daniel quickly turned around to see who it was. She was a woman that looked much of noble stature and elegance.

Daniel cleared his throat

Hello there, could I ask you... who owns this castle? And... also... I found this journal with my name on it, it was on a desk... It looks rather more odd then the other books of your library... And also... Who are you?

Hikenai could not help but laugh when Fire first looked at the picture of Aunt Osbertina! The hirsute Osbertina, well....you could not even say she cut a fine figure, for she was quite rotund, in unfortunately, a masculine way. She might have been an attractive man, otherwise, had she not somewhat resembled a mammoth, but those features, so arranged upon a woman, were alarming to the eye.

"Tis alright Fire, we will find your mother and father," Hikenai whispered.

Strangely, a beam of light caught Hik's eye, and she realized the gleam was a reflection from a bit of glass encircling the eye of a man she had never seen before! There was another presence in the room, and not that of Henry, Sassy, or even Neonea...A man with a monocle was looking around quite quizzically, stood up, dusted himself off, and advanced to the table to peer into the book on genealogy that Kelster had placed there for Fire and Hikenai.

"Hello.....sir...Sir??" Hikenai exclaimed, following behind him in amazement, looking wildly about for Kelster, as the stranger clearly seemed to be a man on a mission!

When Fire walk insite he see a man. He shaked his hand and say: "It be great pleasure to be meet for you Fire."

''The pleasure is mines to, sir.''


Insite he see a woman. Fire look, she is definitely not his mother. He hope then.

Then he heard a joke about her, en see the fun insite of it.

''Thank, I hope it not. The people here look not on her.''

Then he heard about a book. Fire hope that he see maybe a man or woman that he now.

The two young men shook hands, and Hikenai was glad to see the spirit of family was strong at Wallace Castle. So precious, the love of, and for, family, Hik thought to herself. She instructed a young castle maid to have Alice May send up trays with tea, some scones and fruit, and a bit cheese to the sitting room.

"Henry, I hope we can help Fire! It may very well be he is related to us, for I think I see a family resemblance." She turned to Kelster and winked. "But just as long as he does not resemble that portrait hanging down the hall of Auntie Osbertina, we can relax!" Hikenai couldn't help but make the joke, but not wishing to be rude she continued. "Aunt Osbertina was a rather imposing woman, nothing like you, Fire! You are a handsome young man!"

"Shall we look in the family book of genealogy, Kelster? Maybe there are names, or places written there that Fire might recognize."

Then come a woman and she say: ''Oh, yes, your horse will be taken care of!"

Fire say: ''Thanks you very must. It as a long travel.''

Then she says: "And please, won't you come inside with us! We would be very interested in discussing your parents with you, Mr. Wallace! You may be kin to us, no doubt!"

Fire thanks the woman and follow her insite. He put his sword away and he now that this people are good people. He hope to find his parents here. This castle is really big insite. Fire looks full admiration round the castle. He make his no worry about his horse. He now that he is in good hands.

Hikenai heard voices in the foyer of the castle. She knew that Henry and Sassy were probably still in the sitting room, and as she came down the stairway into the great hall, her curiousity got the better of her. She had seen Kelster go out to the gate, and watched as a figure entered, and now, as she came up behing her husband she heard Kelster say,

Peaking over Kel's shoulder, she saw a pleasant young man standing there saying,

As the young man went on about his horse, Hikenai could only listen a moment, and then nodded her head in agreement.

"Oh, yes, your horse will be taken care of!" She motioned for the Master of the Horse to send a stableman at once to see to the young gentleman's horse. "And please, won't you come inside with us! We would be very interested in discussing your parents with you, Mr. Wallace! You may be kin to us, no doubt!"

Fire shaked the hand from the baron.

Hello mister. My name is Fire Wallace and I'm seeking for a father and mother. People in the city say that here live humans with Wallace on there name. So I was thinking maybe my father and mother live on this castle.

Fire was still hands his sword and he don't put it away. He tap his horse on his flank. Just Spirit is tired from the long travel.

Please can my horse have a rest here? He have must run. I will stay in the stable. I don't want to lost my horse. Just for few hours.

The messenger awaited Lady Hik in the main hall of Wallace Castle. He bowed low as she approached and nodded shortly at her.

M'lady, Sir Wolfmist Pendragon is presently in residence at his cottage in Egremont, not at the Pendragon Castle. I wanted you to know that I did, indeed, deliver the package and missive to him, m'lady. And, I thought you might have need of knowing his whereabouts, Lady Wallace.

"Thank you, sir," Hikenai smiled, and gestured toward the back. "If you are thirsty and hungry, please go back and avail yourself of the Wallace kitchen hospitality! I shall be along directly and pay you for your services."

Ah, m'lady, no payment is required. It is a pleasure to do you errands, Lady Hik.....and the refreshments of the Wallace kitchen are more than payment enough!

His mouth was already watering at the thought of Alice May's culinary skill, and he could have sworn he could smell the delectable scent of pork roast, wafting up the hall from the kitchen!

I turned face Sassy, who had stood up and started towards me. I smiled big at her and raced into her arms for a big hug.I greeted her with excitement.

"Hello aunt Sassy! Where have you been?"


"Did you see that my cousin Henry is here too?" I grinned at her.

Listening to Neonea's words, Blythe realized how much Neonea might miss her little cousin James. Osbert's time spent with the army had necessitated James' being cared for and kept busy, and it had been ages since the young ruffian had roamed the halls of Wallace castle. She hoped Osbert would see young master James was up and about soon, though.

Now, however, Blythe smiled at Henry Wallace. Hello, Mr. Wallace, I am Blythe Williams, sir, and serve the Wallaces. She extended her hand to Neonea. Would you like to go into Egremont with me, Neonea? I am on my way to the apothecary shop. Perhaps the sailors have brought in the spiders from the ships.... She shivered involuntarily at the request Hikenai had made of the crews of some of the vessels in the harbor. You could explain to me on the way into town, just how the venom of those spiders can act as a remedy.....

Blythe's eyes widened at the thought. It did seem to defy logic such a thing might be possible, much less Neonea should know about it...but Lady Hik did warrant it might indeed be so.......

Looking at a book in the library about Muncaster castle as there trip there had distubed him a little, Kel heard a familar voice.

It's Sassy, he thought to himself. Running down the corridor and bursting open the door. He picked up his sister, hugging her tightly. SO good to see you back sis. How have you been?

Hearing a knock at the door, he put down his sister. I will just be a moment sis, have to see who that is. As he went back into the hall and walked to the door, he saw that his daughter, little Neo had gone on tip toe and opened the massive door with her tiny hand.

"Hello!" "Have you come to see my papa, and my mama, mister?"

Walking up behind her, he opened the door a little more to see his nephew, Henry stood there.

Henry, it is so good to see you back with us lad. Hugging him, Kel then realised he had not been introduced the little Neo yet. Ah, Henry, this is my daughter, your cousin, Neonea. Neo, this is Henry, he is your uncle Osberts son which makes him your cousin.

I had met Osbert once, long before the family embraced me as one of their own. I remembered that soon he was going to go away. That, and he had a beard. I giggled at the thought of it.

Not too much time had passed, I had wandered away as I had done so many times before. Cheerfully, I skipped through my home in the front, so near the door when I heard a knock. No one was around, where had they gone?

The knock came again and I moved to the large doors, grasped the handles with my little hands, and pulled. My shoes slipped and skidded on the flooring, for the door was so heavy. Managing to open it enough to peer through it, I looked up at Henry.

I did not know him. But, I did not fear him either. By nature, I was kind. My heart shaped face was warm and rounded, framed by straw-blond curls and accented with almond shaped summer-sky colored eyes, a button nose with a blanket of freckles and little pink lips that curled into a friendly smile the minute I laid eyes on the stranger.

I was dressed in my white dress still, that had traces of flowers and strands of random grass that had clung to the material when I was picking flowers earlier.

"Hello!" I chirped, in a bell-like voice, and grinned a toothy smile.

"Have you come to see my papa, and my mama, mister?"

Good Morning Sir James

It is really good to see you also, I forgot how much I had missed my dear family and home, I would be delighted if ye could let Lady Hikenai and Miss Neo I am home, I have missed everyone so much

Sir James was up early. He had packed all his possessions, and had Martin, the head stable man, ready his steed for the trip to Hawkshead. Since Lady Hikenai had placed him in charge of the estate there, and named Lorena Lanius head housekeeper, they both had hastened to make all arraangement necessary for their move to the country barony. Serving Lady Hikenai in such a capacity was quite a step up for Lorena, and when Sir James had discovered she would be with him in his new position at Hawkshead, a world of possibilities opened for old knight. If anyone would have told me I would find love at my age......... The love of a young woman such as Lorena, and the prospect of helping her raise her children, had given Sir James a new outlook on life. Coming through the kitchen doors at Wallace Castle, to consult with Alice May on picnic provisions for the journey back to Hawkshead, Sir James suddenly stopped abruptly.

Lady Sassy!

He bowed low, and straightened up, smiling at the young woman. So good to see you, m'lady! I saw from the tower that Lady Hik and Miss Neo are in the meadow, would you like me to go tell them you are home, m'lady?
Sir James continued smiling at Sassy, knowing how happy the Wallaces would be that the young woman was home.

Hikenai stretched her arms wide as Neo ran toward her, and braced herself for the leap. The child nimbly latched on with her legs about Hikenai's waist, and pressed her face again Hik's neck. The two of them spun round and round in the sunlight of the meadow, skirts billowed about in the morning breeze. Neonea smelled of lavendar and scented soap, her blond curls gleaming against Hikenai's shoulder.

"Oh, are these for me, now?" she murmured, and noted the wildflowers Neo clutched in her moist little hand. The six year old's cornflower blue eyes were riveted upon her own, and once more, Hikenai was amazed with the irony that although they had adopted Neonea, her coloring and those eyes made her resemble Kelster's side of the family!

"What are you doing out so early, Neonea? Have you had breakfast yet? When I saw you from the bedroom window, I could not dress fast enough to get out here to you!" Hikenai giggled, and widened her eyes playfully. "What do you have planned for the day? I may just have to skip going in to the Bells, and spend the day with you! I would love to do that!"

The warmth of the sun, and the freshness of the summer breeze were things Hikenai could not get enough of since the return of the Wallace's from Muncaster Castle. Hikenai had pulled the drapes back from her bedchamber that morning, and had thrown open the shutters to admit the early morning light. Just a simple thing as freedom, the love of family, the ability to move about, and plan one's day with those we love, mean so much, she thought, as she gazed down upon the meadow outside Wallace Castle. She caught sight of Neonea in the field, picking wildflowers, the sunlight reflecting on the childs' golden locks, and Hikenai hurried to dress.

Now, passing through the kitchen entrance of the castle, she made her way through the garden, past the rows of beans and the mounds of the potatoes, catching the scent of the bee balm, rosemary and sage, Hikenai hurried down the path to the meadow behind the stables.

"Neonea! Good morning! You are up bright and early!" By then, Hik had broken into a run, and rushed to join her little daughter, stretching her arms out for a hug as she ran toward the child.

When I woke up this morning, I had a funny feeling in the pits of my stomach. I hadn't really understood what it was, other than it was built up of a ball of excitement in my gut. I felt like running and skipping around; full of energy that I could not comprehend. For some reason, it had felt like I had just arrived to this place, or maybe just settled. I leaped out of bed, and with the help of Blythe, I dressed in a dress I thought was so pretty. There was a time I didn't have dresses this pretty, or even a bed so nice.

Home.

It was all I wanted for so long. I had that now. The sunny day had brought a renewed energy to me, and I relished in it.

I went outside soon after I was dressed, clutching the wooden doll I was given not too long ago, and went to the field to pick flowers for my mama.

Waking up with a start, Kelster looked around the room as if something or someone had awoken him. Seeing nothing he turned to his wife beside him still fast asleep. Kissing he softly on the forehead, he jumped out of bed. Today was the day they set off for Ravenglass and Muncastor Castle. He was so looking forward to seeing it for the first time. He was also excited at the prospect of seeing the citizens of Ravenglass who must be wondering what there Baron looked like.


As he started to wash he again felt that cold feeling at his back. What was that he thought to himself? Shrugging it off his mind started to think of the day ahead as he had risen early. I can't wait to get off, he whispered to himself but he had to wait till everyone was awake and ready.

"Muncaster Castle looks quite impressive, dearest! It's much larger than I had imagined....." The portrait of the castle revealed a stately, formidable stucture, surrounded what appeared to be a fine garden. Hikenai knew the River Esk was nearby, as well, and she envisioned a happy journey south to Ravenglass, and enjoyable days with Kel and Neoena. They could possibly fish, and have a picnic by the river's edge. "Oh yes, Kel, let's go to Ravenglass! And after we see to things at Muncaster, perhaps, as we are traveling, we can continue on Hawkshead. This will seem like a holiday for us and the children, Kel!"

As the messenger left after dropping off a painting of Muncastor Castle, Kelster unwrapped it and looked at the castle he now had as the Baron of Ravenglass.



Calling out to his wife to come and have a look, he thought to himself that it was about time him, his wife, Neo, Matthew and Sara went over to see his other castle. After all, it belonged to him and his family now being part of his lands.

Hikenai smiled, and rose from the stool, for she heard the babies and wished to go to them before the nurse did.

Blythe, perhaps you might do some research and find out exactly what legends there might be concerning Muncaster Castle? She knew that often episodes such as the ones Blythe just listed had very explainable causes. Being the romantic sort of person she was, Hik had hoped for more that just descriptions of incidences of strange happenings. She yearned for stories, and legends, for historic tales that might engage the imagination.....

Mrs. Frobisher, as soon as I see to the babes, I will come and let you do the final fitting. The dress is lovely! The wedding of Ghostwriter and Seamus is very special to the Baron and me. I thank you for designing such a fine dress for me to wear.

Hikenai winked at Blythe. I am serious, Blythe. I have heard the library at Muncaster is teeming with ancient books and manuscripts. Perhaps when we travel there in a few weeks, I shall let you do some investigation and research on the origin of the hauntings. There might be documentation left there, in the castle library.

Blythe placed the parchment containing Lady Hikenai's 'to-do' list for the manor at Hawkshead on the bedside table and turned to Lorena and the dress maker.

I have just heard a disturbing thing! You know Lady Hik and Lord Kel will also go to Ravenglass, to Muncaster Castle, as well.....when they go on progress through Westmorland this summer...........Alice May and Thackery were discussing it just now in the kitchen! It seems Muncaster Castle is quite haunted! It is haunted, and has been for years! Everyone for miles around knows this, evidently!

Lorena stood back from the dressmakers form, smiling and nodding her approval. The fabric Lady Hikenai had chosen for her dress for the wedding of her friend, Lady Ghostwriter was lovely. With Hikenai's dark hair and eyes, she would be striking in these colors!
Ah, Mrs. Frobisher! It is perfect. It will look perfect on Lady Hikenai this weekend, when she and the Baron attend the wedding!

Aye, mum! Mrs. Frobisher muttered around the pins she clasped between her pursed lips. But I do wish she would slow down her preparations long enough to come try it on! I need to make sure I have the length of these sleeves just right!

Lorena smiled at the milliner. It did seem Mrs. Frobisher often worried needlessly, but Lo nodded, in an comforting effort to let the older woman know she understood. The dress was gorgeous and Lord Kelster had given his wife the most beautiful garnet rings and necklaces. She would be able to choose just the right pieces to wear to subtly complement the dress....
Do ye think Lord Kel will wear his kilt? 'Tis for certain many Scots will be there, as Lady Ghost is marrying Lord Seamus, Lo whispered in a conspiratorial manner.
Lorena loved a man in a kilt, and she knew that Lady Hikenai thought her husband especially handsome! Lord Kelster was quite proud of his Scottish heritage, and Lorena would not be surprised should he wear the tartan of Clan Wallace to the wedding. She did sigh a little bit, though, as she thought of it...for it made her think of Scotland all the more, and she had no idea how England and Scotland saw each other now...whether as friends or foes-----but to be sure, so many in Westmorland had Scottish kith and kin, and blood ran thicker than water! There was much water under the bridge of the past, of that she was certain!
Lorena looked in surprise, for Blythe was coming through the door of Lady Hikenai's bed chamber with a worried look upon her lovely face.

Blythe came through the great hall, her skirts rustling quietly as she hurried along, in search of Lady Hikenai. She had been making lists all morning of the things Hikenai wanted to tend to when they visited Hawkshead. Recently Lady Hik had been given the title to the little country barony. It was a quaint, out of the way place, and Blythe looked forward to visiting there. Already there had been murmurs in the servants' quarters at Wallace castle that Lady Hik intended to leave Sir James in charge at Hawkshead! Bythe wondered at that! It did disturb her a little. Sir James no longer drank, but tucked away, on the moors of Westmorland, might he begin to feel reckless? Would he take the cork from the bottle, and in his solitude, and isolation, feel entitled to the drink, or two, that might always lead to excess?
Ah, she thought, time enough to worry about that later on, if it even comes to pass.
She smiled, thinking of how Sir James's handsome face always glowed when he saw her friend, Lorena Lanius. Lady Hik would surely not part them! If only Lorena were not married to that blackhearted Luc Lanius! No matter he had not been heard from for nearly a year! He was too evil to be dead and gone. Blythe shivered, wondering when that cruel man would reappear...but her attention was quickly taken by the mouse, calmly perched on the sideboard!

Ah, I must find Felix! And off she went in search of Lord Kel' furry purring potentate!

Hikenai had been brought word from Kendal that Chrisiusmaximus and Lady Roberta were in Kendal! She rushed about Wallace castle, making plans for her brother and sister-in-law's visit, humming to herself in anticipation.

She knew it might be awhile before they traveled to Egremont, for they were surely tired from their long journey from the south, but Hikenai was happy. Soon she would have so many of her family and loved one's nearby. She and Kelster had learned their clanswomen, Allyson Howard, and Terieana, from Scotland, were also in Westmorland! The Clan Wallace was growing steadily.....with the recent addition of Neonea, Osbert's rediscovered son, Henry, and their cousin, Marae!

It was a time of rejoicing....for Hikenai had also found that Corster, the young innkeeper, and Marae's beloved, was her younger brother!

Hikenai sat down at the table in the great hall, placed her quill to the parchment before her and began listing preparations that needed to be attended to. She wanted to organize a ball for Egremont!

Wolf, hunting for pigeon to eat, shot the one carrying Roberta's message. Then when he rode forward to find it, he saw he had mistaken a messenger's feathering in his cap for a pigeon. "Damn."

He dismounted and dragged the body, message and all, behind the roadside wall. He wondered what kinda of correspondence the messenger had, but only had time to retrieve the coin bag from the belt before seeing someone else on the road. Wolf made a dash for it and, mounted, made for the river beyond the roadside trees.

Kelster said,

Kelster always knew just what to say to bolster the child's sense of accomplishment and self esteem!

Hikenai nodded with seriousness at Kelsters' words, and replied, Oh, yes darling! trying not to let a little smile escape the cornors of her lips. If Neonea entered the race, she certainly would win for no other contenders would have the heart to pull out ahead of the child! Neonea was beloved by all who met her! Hikenai loved to watch Neonea ride the pony, for the little animals short, stocky legs would speed along, with Neo leaning forward a bit in the little saddle, and both Neo and pony had expressions of fierce determination upon their faces! Neonea rode the pony for all she was worth, and the pony seemed to live for Neo, and hugs, petting, currying, and carrots she would bring to the stables.

Darling, she will be quite the competitor one day, Miss Neo will! She is a fine rider!

Hikenai thought carefully about the new filly, Little Wing. As Kelster and Neonea caught up with her and Dram, she slowed the war horse to an easy walk. The massive steed had been Hik's hunter for several years but he was growing long in the tooth, though Hikenai refused to see it. She loved the horse dearly for they had faced Capone's forces together last summer, and Drambuie was dependable in battle, but lax upon the race track, too inclined to saunter easily alongside Prince Charming, Leo Cavendish's hunter! He might be proving a distraction to Prince, who would finish nearly last with Drambuie, each time the horses ran together! It had become apparent to Hikenai that in order to give Leo and Prince Charming a chance in the race, she had to take Dram out of the line up. Drambuie was a naughty influence on Prince Charming!

Kelster, I think I will race Little Wing next. She is very fast, very spirited.
Hikenai thought of Little Wing, with the oval of white on her forehead.

They rode through the huge stone gate of Wallace Castle and down the road towards Egremont. The breeze was humid and warm, perfumed with the scent of spring flowers, and a myriad of birds sang out their melody as the Wallaces rode along, down the hoof hardened track along the river.

Tall water weeds gleamed in the sparkling sunlight, and fat turtles leapt from logs as they passed. Rabbits darted this way and that, to Neonea's delight, and Hikenai rejoiced to hear the child's laughter.

Yes, it was a new day, a new world in Westmorland, and despite her high hopes, Hikenai felt the tiniest bit of trepidation, as if she and Kel were standing on a precipice, but the vast abyss was obscured from their sight, by the many pleasing scenes which tantalized their vision.

Hikenai shrugged off these thoughts, chiding herself for her attitude, and returned her focus to Neonea, who continued to laugh and prattle happily. She and Kelster would work hard to see to the child's happiness. They would work hard for the betterment of Westmorland, they would join in with their neighbors, all pledged to give their best to the newly formed county. Tis but momentary discomfort, making me feel this uneasiness, Hikenai told herself. Tis a passing frame of mind.....
And Hikenai clapped the reins against Dram's neck and urged him into a canter.

Yes Hik, great idea, Neo can ride her pony too. After getting dressed he was just about to go down stairs. I will go get the horsed and pony ready if you want to get Neo my love? Running down to the door he opened it wide and headed for the stables.

Kelster had been working so hard. As Hikenai heard him mention how tired he had been of late, she made a mental note to herself to prepare him a spring tonic full of healthy ingredients to strengthen the blood and bones! Kelster said,

Hikenai, as inquisitive as ever, moved quickly to Kel's side to hear, and he suddenly kissed her, with such passion and ardor, Hik privately laughed at herself. He needed no tonic for that! She felt her own passion rise within, but he released her from his arms, with a chuckle, as he whispered,

Hikenai was tickled by the funny little ruse he used to kiss her! She could not argue that her loved her, either, for every day Kelster showed her in so many ways how much he loved her, and she placed her index finger against her lips, smiling and blushing a bit. She heard no sound from Neonea's tiny room, and she motioned for Kel to stay put, as she drew the drapes about their bed, shielding it from the view of any who might enter the room. Hik turned to her husband, and whispered, I think Sara and Matthew may have gone back to sleep Kel......so perhaps.... to start our day....... And Hikenai smiled delightedly at her husband.

Hikenai rolled over in bed, flung her arm around Kelster and pulled him tight. The faint streaks of dawn colored the window next to their bed. Last night she had drawn the drapes back, so they could gaze as the stars as they drifted off to sleep. Now, the dusty slate blue of the sky was beginning to lighten as the sun made it's approach to the horizon, sending up ribbons of crimson which soon would pierce the windows with a brilliant hue.Wake up, sleepyhead! Hikenai snuggled against Kel's back and kissed his shoulderblade. Soon those little moppets in the next room will be wailing for their breakfast, Neonea will be up, too, and our day will begin, love.
She pushed herself up on one elbow, cocked her head and listened. Sara and Matthew were already cooing in their little beds, awaiting the nurse who shortly would arrive. Hikenai threw back the blanket, struggled from beneath the twist of covers, and muttered to Kelster, I think I will just go on in and change their nappies. They'd like to be dry. She leaned over, kissed Kelster tenderly on his closed eyes, and playfully traced the tilt of his nose with her own. 'Twas the start of a new day!

A few weeks later, Sir James took up his journel, copied the present date, and began to write.



Sir James closed his journel and sighed. He took another sip of the Sweet Woodruff tea and shook his head. Lady Hikenai was herself again, but she had struggled painfully, and regained her sense of self only after nearly losing everything. Lord Kelster's love reclaimed and redeemed her, it restored her to sanity, Sir James thought to himself, as he placed his journel on the table.

With the anger rising inside him at the fact that Wolfmist had come into his castle and was now trying to order his guards and his staff around, Kelster waited till Bardock had finished speaking.


I am glad you came to me with this Bardock and i want you to relay a message to all the guards and the staff in my Castle. Kelster Wallace is still master in this house and Wolmist is not, his so called orders to you and anyone else in my employ must be disregarded. Orders in my home come from me and nobody else, anyone attempting to do as he says instead of my wishes will no longer be in the employ of the Wallace household, in fact i may personally run them through myself. If he continues along this path be ready for the word from me to take him by the scruff of the neck and throw him out of my castle. Do you understand me Bardock?

Does Kelster partake? Have you run mad, sir! He never touches the elixir, he has no inkling of it's properties! I had no inkling of properties that would warrant the treatment you propose for me!

Hikenai gasped at the inference Wolfmist made. Could her Happy Time elixir be a poison?! She stood, dumbfounded at his words.

Wait a moment! When I consented to giving over control of my apothecary to you, I remember you distinctly said, you would not control anything else, but I had to obey your orders if I wanted any help from you. I consented. But now, you are adding additional conditions to our agreement!

Hikenai was in a cold sweat, but not from overindulgence from the elixir, and not from fear, but only from anticipating Kelster's imminent arrival which she judged would be any minute! When her husband arrived and found Sir Wolfmist barking orders, she was frightened of the consequences. Kelster Wallace was not the sort of man to allow another to come into his home and take over! Hikenai was in a panic that her admission of weakness and over fondness for the elixir would be the cause of spilled blood.

Don't you think that your directives concerning my course of treatment are quite harsh?! Surely, I am not deserving of the detainment you envision, nor is Kelster the sort of man....nor any of my family members or servants, the sort of people who would need searching for contraband!

The frenzy of fear that filled Hikenai was palpable. She turned to Wolfmist and desperately uttered, I will not allow it! I must be with my family and loved ones, not locked away like some animal! No! Have you lost your mind, Sir Wolfmist! Kelster would never allow me to be treated like a mad, raving lunatic, and I would die first!

Sir James stood, holding the paper Wolfmist had given him. Hikenai could see anger inflame the older man and he awaited one word from her to seize the man he viewed as an interloper into the Wallace's business. Yet, he restrained himself, and did not act despite his own inclination to throttle Wolfmist.

Wolf nodded, "and what about your husband? Does he partake, often?"

He ripped the parchment from its loose binding and handed it to the staff member who had entered, "you will need to provide for her night and day. Any visitors who step to the dungeon must be searched for any opium or ingredients or tools to make it. Anything else should be fine. Any gifts that come into the castle or presented to her elsewhere will need to be scrutinised for tools or ingredients or opium itself."

He got up and dotted the items on the list as he explained them to both the staff and Hikenai, "Here are the items I will allow into her new chamber, which should be scrubbed clean with freshly slaked lime, whitewashed with lime paint and a sealed but clean window. Please find a suitable dungeon cell and do all these things to it, I shall be there to inspect it weekly, but I shall send a Pendragon Knight daily to inspect daily. And one final thing. I must insist that all family relatives, including Kelster, be searched thoroughly for contraband also. I will be lenient with visiting hours, your Lady will be quite bored for a while until this is over, and boredom is something that should be avoided, else her fingers may wander. Understood?"

Waiting for them, Wolfmist looked up, covering his writing slightly, "the best thing to do for a few weeks is allow your body to detox. I will send for the best quack in town... I am thinking a nice water and bandage treatment and perhaps including some oil and massage therapy. We will need to lock you up in a dungeon cell for a while - don't worry, we'll allow you the usual comforts, but I hope you will understand if I don't trust your fingers for a while. I'll allow you a couple of hours every morning and evening to exercise and work at your shop, but only a few. We need to reduce the temptation as much as possible and gradually increase rehabilitation."

He sighed, then looked down to make a few more notes, then, "You need to tell me if any other people have been ordering the opium from you on a regular basis and what for."

Wolf looked to the staff and prepared to give some orders ((next post)).

Hikenai stepped outside the door and motioned to Blythe Williams, her lady in waiting, who was passing the door to the study, on her way to the great hall.
Blythe, please go get Calhoon, Forbes and Sgt. Bardock, um.....and Sir James Bland. In fact go get Sir James first if you would, and direct them all to come to the study. Tell them all is well. Especially, if you see Forbes with Lord Wallace, tell them all is well.
The young woman swept Hikenai a graceful curtsy, then hurried on her way to comply with Hik's request.
Hikenai turned back to the study, where Sir Wolfmist sat at Kelster's desk writing industriously.

Wolf paced back and forth, thinking. "You will employ a staff member, someone totally new and of my choosing. That staff member will run your shop and sell your things, and will watch over you while you prepare your products. Any sign of opium made he will destroy. Any sign of you making any, you will be booted out of the store until the day after. You will avoid opium at all times." He stopped and looked up at her. "Do you understand me, soldier?"

He paused. He realised what he had just said, going into military mode often happened whenever he took control of things. "Do you understand why I call you soldier? For me to make sure you break this... habit... you will have to follow every order I say about this. I will not control anything else, but you will obey my orders if you want any help from me. Is that understood?"

Wolf took the vial and held it up to the light, shaking it slightly and studying it. "Is this the last of it? Are you able to make more?" he murmured as he opened the vial and sniffed it before baulking to the side and placing the stopper back. He pocketed the vial inside his cloak out of site. He focused on Hikenai. "Show me."

Sorry backsides?! I will thank you to keep a civil tongue in my home, hissed Hikenai, as she galloped down the steps a couple at a time, held her skirts above her ankles, and at the bottom, tripped on the banister, twirled across the foyer, and came to a sudden halt, with a jerk, next to Forbes. She regained her dignity and composure, drew herself up, and looked evenly at Wolfmist. By then, she was smiling and her voice smooth.
I know why this gentleman is here. And, as she nodded to the guards to lower their swords, she turned a mournful eye to the men who stood to protect her and hers. It is alright, Sgt. Bardock, Thackery, Calhoon.....Forbes, and Hikenai straightened up, for Forbes had righted her from her near fall.
I believe Sir Wolfmist is here to see the Baron and myself, out of concern for my well being. He means us no harm. Let us show our guest into the study. Forbes, will you go and find the Baron? And Thackery, perhaps we should offer Sir Wolfmist refreshments?

All the while Hik spoke, her grip tightened on the last vial of Happy Time elixir in her pocket. She held it like a talisman, and steadied her breathing.

Even as she uttered the words, Hikenai knew feigning confusion, or persisting in denial would be in completely in vain! It was no use to continue.
Hikenai read in Wolfmist's face the complete truth of the situation. There was no turning back. No nicely putting this to rest. She had hoped Kelster would appear, she had hoped to distract Sir Wolfmist with tea, or a drink of her husband's whiskey, but that was not to be. She waited for Thackery to leave for the kitchen, and for Forbes to head for the cellar, to see if Kelster was there. Then she nodded at the guards to leave her and Wolfmist in the study, in privacy.
I see there is no stopping you. You are going to call me on this. And here.....you are right to do so.
Hikenai placed within Sir Wolfmist's hand the last vial of her Happy Time elixer.

Wolf thudded on the door again and it opened, revealing some armed guards, Now what you be wantin lad, don't want to be disturbin his Lordship now do we?

"That's precisely what we be wanting. Now get your arse in gear and tell your lord and lady to get their sorry backsides down here this instant. It's important and their lives may very well be in danger."

Hearing the commotion from below, Hikenai slipped the last vial of Happy Tiime elixir into her pocket, and rushed out of her privy closet. She made her way down the stairs to the great hall with her heart beating a crazed staccato in her chest. What was going on?
Reaching the landing, above the main foyer of Wallace castle, her eyes were riveted on the sight of Sir Wolfmist at the door, surrounded by the castle guards, who had all drawn their swords. Oh, no, thought Hikenai, this is because of me!
Wait, she shouted out weakly, nearly losing her voice for fear they might strike.

The guard came rushing in to tell sergeant Bradock the news of the man thumping on the door. Sir, Calhoon told me to come get you and the guards, seems there is a madman trying to gain entry to the castle and shouting out his Lordships name and his wife's sir.


Right men.]Barked out the sergeant. we have trouble, lets move to the castle door, we will surround this rapscallion from the rear. The entire guard, comprising of five platoons rushed to the front door. As they approached the man, Bardock gave the order. Draw you're swords men! Forming a very large and very thick semi circle behind the man, Bardock raised his sword to the man's back. What is the trouble here lad?

Hikenai returned from her brother Paddy's puppet show, slid slowly off Drambuie, and steadied herself. She found her footing, and made for the side entrance to the castle, the closest to the stairway leading to her bed chamber. She bypassed the kitchen, although Neonea was sure to be in there, helping Alice May pat out little yeast rolls for their dinner. She felt like a crazed woman. The words of Sir Wolfmist rang in her head, and over and over she heard him growl out, "Hikenai what are you thinking?" as she remembered the disgust with which he spat out the Happy Time elixir! This afternoon, when he had snagged the flask from her lap with his arrow, as she sat upon the bench at the puppet show, she had barely reacted! She had been docile, as weak as a cat, sitting upon the bench, sipping the elixir, and waiting for the show to begin!

He'd had Leana withhold the flask from her, cautioning the young woman not to even sip it, for it was dangerous. Then, as he had confronted Hikenai with the ingredients of the elixir, Hikenai had felt herself torn between gratitude for his concern, and a strong desire and inclination to be defensive about her use of the elixir. True, the juice from the seeds of poppies was the main course for the mixture. That, and absinthe....oh, just a touch of absinthe... What had he called the juice of the poppies? Opium! It simply calmed her nerves, and some days she needed it....but there was something about his questioning of her... He kept asking about how much she partook of it! How often!

Hikenai looked at her reflection in the looking glass above her night table. He knew! Wolfmist, with his observation of her at the puppet show, his keen analysis of her dulled reaction, his identification of what the flask contained, recognized immediately what she had sought everyday to hide from herself, and to hide from others! What have I been thinking?! Hikenai thought with horror to herself, before the very words tumbled from her lips.

What have I been thinking?

The small bedside cabinet containing the various potions and elixirs she used, the simples she had concocted in her apothecary shop, all there at her convenience for use against the maladies of childhood complaints that Sara, Matthew and Neonea might need treatment for. And there, amongst the healthful herbs, and harmless remedies, was the Happy Time elixir! She seized the vials of elixir, holding them out away from the other herbs, as if they contained poison potent enough to taint, through close proximity, the very preparations and simples she might use on her children. Aghast, with shock and horror, she considered what the case might be should one of the children get hold of this by accident!

Hikenai gathered all the Happy Time vials, and hurried for the necessary closet off the small the dressing room of her bedchamber. Once there, she lifted the lid upon the chair designed for the relief of one's bodily function. The shaft beneath the chair's opening dropped down many many feet to the pit below, and Hikenai caught a whiff of hell itself, as she considered where her present road might lead her.

I am not the exception. She thought dismally. Sir Wolfmist called me on it, he knows the truth. He will tell Kelster. Perhaps other people know, as well, for I have shared my Happy Time with all who wished a sip! It is no secret, and Sir Wolfmist plainly knows.

Jah will not continue to bless me, if I so eagerly seek my destruction, with both hands, knowing what I know about this elixir.

Hikenai dropped vial after vial of Happy Time elixir down the shaft in her privy, but when she came to the last vial, a look of anguish came across her face, as if she was parting forever from a dearly beloved one. Guilt and shame was scorched upon her features as she stared at the stoppered vial in her hand!

Hikenai had enjoyed the opening celebrations of the new county, she had reveled in her freedom from council duties, and indulged in the ale and Happy Time while taking part in the festivities. Her depression over the events of late winter had ended, replaced by concern over the adoption of Neonea, but even that didn't unduly worry her. As the winter passed, and the buds appeared on the trees, Hikenai's attention turned to family and friends in Egremont.

The twins were growing daily, by leaps and bounds, passing little milestones only parents might notice. Neonea had taken her place in her home and in their hearts, and her winsome ways won over all who came into contact with the child.

As the spring progressed, Hikenai began to think about a ball....a May Day ball!

I shall have to discuss this with Kelster! Our great hall is certainly large enough for dancing, and we could have quite an evening, lots of music and merry making.

The lady Hikenai was beside herself with concern. Blythe could not help but worry as she saw Hikenai go about with a drawn look upon her face. Stress often aged people, and after the birth of the twins, Blythe had seen Hikenai miraculously shed years, in the happiness of having the babies....and yet, now, the poor woman looked older, more grave, more somber than Blythe had ever seen her.

Neonea's true father had returned! His name was Cy, something or other, Blythe reflected to herself. The Baron, and Lady Hikenai, were in correspondence with Dame Rein, and they would not give up the child without a fight. Blythe hoped that Millicent Rein, one of the sharpest legal minds in all of England, would settle. once and for all. the question of Neonea's custody.

Lady Hikenai needed her mind set at ease.

The last line in the song always tripped Lorena up, as she could not speak the language, but the ancient song was so beautiful, so haunting, she sang anyway....forming the strange lyrics with her tongue as best she could, singing the way it sounded to her.

She had hurriedly come back to Wallace Castle this evening to pack up a box of fresh linens, pillows, herbal toiletries, and anything else a young woman might like. The girl, Phoebe, was going to stay on at Kel's Bells, take up residence in the room above the tavern, and work for room and board. Lorena knew Lady Hikenai would approve mightily of her having hired her, as Lady Hik was ready to take in Phoebe as well, the night that Neonea had come to them! Lorena imagined that when Lady Hikenai returned from Scotland, she would try to persuade Phoebe to move to the castle, and quit at Kel's Bells, pursue an education, instead!

Not sure about that one! Lorena thought, thinking of the independent young girl, who was little more than a child, actually. Lorena had not forgotten how quietly Phoebe had vanished from the bedroom above Kel's Bells in November, when she had stayed there with her and Neonea, before Lady Hik came for them the next day. Neither she, nor Sir James Bland, who had slept downstairs in the office of the closed tavern, had heard Phoebe steal away during the night.

Lorena smiled, as she continued to sing, and then slipped down the servant stairway towards Sir James' suite of rooms. He might accompany her to the tavern, they would stay briefly to get Phoebe settled in, and then, maybe, Sir James might want to go with her to her small home, where her children were attended by a kind neighbor, and awaited her return, so they could have tea together! Sir James had said he wished to meet her young ones, and tonight was a good opportunity!

Angus had no sooner returned to Egremont from his trip south with the messengers, taking letters to Lady Hikenai's family, than the Baron notified him he was to go south again, to accompany the Wallace family, on their trip, for the marriage of the Earl of Bedford, Christopher de Peche, and Lady Roberta, the Countess of Peterborough. Angus had harbored a silent, secret resentment about it. He had thought that Sir James Bland, one of the knights formerly in service to the Earl of Bedford, would be chosen to head the retinue formed to accompany and protect the Wallace family.

I just returned, Jah's bones, he groaned to himself.

He did regard Sir James warily. The man had been drinking more and more. He was of no use to anyone in his present state. It would not do to entrust the safety of one's family to such a man. Angus realized the Baron could not place Sir James in that position of responsibility, no matter that Sir James had guarded the Lady Hikenai for the past few years, ever since her brother, Chrisiusmaximus had appointed Sir James to escort Hikenai to Cumberland that first time, long before her marriage to the Baron.

The retinue riding along side the Wallace coaches, through the Wiltshire countryside, had been in the saddle for days, and would be in the saddle for weeks. There was no help for it, it was hard traveling. They must arrive in time and were on a tight schedule. Angus shifted in an effort to spare his aching back and shook his head, thinking of Sir James. It certainly was a sad day when a man let the bottle get the best of him, and put a such a sad finale on a life of honor, bravery and allegiance to the Crown!

I just could not bear to leave them, Kelster. Sara and Matthew must come!

Seeing the look in his wifes eyes, he knew he could not say no to her even though he did have a little concern about the babies. He never could say no to her when she looked at him with those beautiful eyes.

All right my love, we will take Matthew and Sara with us along with Neo.

And I just wonder if we will not be able to see Holly again?!


I so hope so dear, i miss little Su_su, i mean Holly. I wonder how much she has grown since we last saw her?

Yes darling, Chris a married man. I always thought that in the end he would marry his sword you know. Laughing his joke, Kel then smiled at his wife. Yes it will be great to go to his wedding, i wonder if we should take Matthew and Sara as well or leave them here? What do you think my love, it may be a long way for them to travel but i am sure Chris and lady Roberta would love to see them as well as little Neo.

As Lorena had come to the kitchen to tell Alice of Sassy arrival, Blythe rose from the table where she was sipping her Sweet Woodruff tea and musing about the little llama Evesham had helped Neonea settle in the stables along side the foal of Miss Fortune.

The Lady Sassy is home!? Blythe hurried from the table and passed Lorena quickly, and made her way up the long corridor of Wallace castle as quickly as she could. The great hall still teamed with guests. She arrived in time to hear Sassy say

Blythe stopped, dropped a graceful curtsy to the young Wallace sister and smiled.
M'lady, it is so good to see you home once more! If I may escort you upstairs, the Lord Kelster and Lady Hik are in the bedchamber, Lady Hikenai only this morning has given birth, and she is still in bed!
The young servant woman stopped short at that, not wanting to presume to tell Lady Sassy the Wallace's wonderful news.
Would you like to come with me? Blythe smiled at Thackery. Elebert Evesham is coming up from the kitchen to assist in bringing all Lady Sassy's belongings inside, Thackery. Evesham will help you!

Oh Thackery I have so missed Alice's cooking please could ye get me a wee bite to eat I'm rather hungry.

Hearing a knock at the door, Thackery thought to himself, this is may day off but i know the baron and lady Wallace are so busy upstairs with the little ones and visitors. Getting up in the kitchen where he had been eating a lot of Alices pies, He walked to the door. Before opening it, he rubbed his hand over his moushtache to make sure no bits of pie were stuck and quickly looked in the mirror then opened the door. Good day, how may i be of assist...

Seeing lady Sass there, the sister to the baron of ravenglass, he smiled at her for he had known her since she was a little girl. So good to see you home my lady, come in quickly from the cold. I will alert you're brother of you're arrival but first come in, get warm. Would you like anything to eat or drink after you're journey?

Snowlynx swallows the last of her warmed rum and stands to greet Lord Kelster.
Yes, I am alone with my retinue. Alexis had a slight cold, so I thought it best for her to stay home. And neither of the twins are quite right if separated. They get cranky and do not eat right. So they both stayed home this trip. Paddy is at home, hopefully helping keep an eye on them.
Snow smiles as Kelster is beaming from ear to ear as he speaks of his children.
When he asks how long she can stay for, Snowlynx glances out the window, as the snow begins, yet again, evaluating her travel plans in her mind.
I am not sure of my plans. I was hoping to head home today, a mama's worrying for her children, but it seems at the moment that we will be fighting the weather going north.

Snowlynx turns to Johnny, Captain, please see to the retinue. I will make a request for a meal and drink sent out to you all, shortly. Keep them on their toes, watch the weather, and I will send out orders.
Johnny salutes, My Lady, all will be as you request. He turns and leaves.

Snowlynx returns her attention towards Kelster and points to a gift, I brought a gift for Hik, you, and the babes. I will bring it up to her shortly.



Congratulations Kelster. I am so sorry I missed the event. The week was just so busy and filled with delays to plans.
Snow chuckles, I hear you were busy, too. Proving, yet again, the fertility of the Douglas bloodlines with twins yourself. We may have to start warning any marrying a Douglas that they may be gifted double when it comes to children.

You look like you are glowing with happiness. I am happy for you.Snow smiles, thinking of Kelster, she had seen the circle of life through him. He was so young, when she first meet him. And now, he had grown into a wonderful man, a father, and a part of her family. Life is full of surprises.

Captain, please help me carry the gifts in.
She looks at the men. I want all the horses brushed down and watered. Be ready on my order to have them resaddled and ready to ride.
The guards look at her a little surprised, as they dismount, finally one says, Yes, My Lady. They quickly walk the horses to the stable.

Snowlynx knocks on the door. She listens, but does not hear anything.

Blythe and Neonea had been gone to Kel's Bell's tavern for only two hours, when, after taking more boiling water up to Lady Hik's bed chamber, Lorena returned to the kitchen, her face flushed with excitement, her eyes glowing with happiness for Lord and Lady Wallace. She turned to Alice May, bursting out with the news!
Guess what?! You will n'er guess what? Twins! They have twins! A boy and a girl were born within the last hour!
Ah, she thought to herself, they'd best get to cooking now! There would be feasting and revelry for another week or more at Wallace Castle, for all Twelfth Night was over, and the holiday season past!

I was working in the kitchen, sorting the egg white from the egg yolks when the lady----the one with all the squirrels---had come in for the tea tray. One of the upstairs maids had already come down from Lady Hik's room, tellin' us the babe was comin' directly-----to keep boiling water and plenty of it. Now she returned, smiling, and all in the know, for the lady's water had broken, and she was laboring hard now.

The baby is coming soon. The midwife is muttering about birthing chairs and has Lady Hikenai still walking around the room! There is a a saint's finger bone on the table, and the midwife said to open the cupboards down here, all of them.....Lady Hikenai even screamed out to open them, for some reason, Lorena.....I was half way down the hall, nearly to the stairs when I head her shout from her bedchamber!

I began to swing the doors to the pantry and cabinets open. Alice May smiled and I did, too. It was just an old wives tale.....but who knew? It would not hurt to follow the custom, and with the baby so close to being born, best take no chances.

When I had me own, I did the same, Edith. I smiled then and volunteered my thoughts, I think the celebration will go on here at the castle for even longer!

We were already baking twice the usual amount, due to Lord and Lady Wallace's many house guests, but I supposed the cooking would increase even more now!

Narrowing her eyes at James, Saskia spat, Ye ne'er fought me, yer maliciously tripped me up as I was running away, so Hik could belt me wif er flowers!

Standing with her hands on her hips, she couldn't help wondering if the Wallaces would eject her from the party if she gave him a good kick up the backside for that one, but on hearing his next claims, her eyes twinkled with mischief.

Yer's a pirate are ye? Prove it, brings me rum and treasure! All self respecting pirates have gallons of rum and treasure, shortie.

Grinning, she took a seat and cocked an eyebrow at James, waiting for him to prove his claims.

Sir James entered the great hall of Wallace Castle with a throbbing headache, an agonizing reminder of last night's revelry at Kel's Bells Tavern in Egremont, where he had drunk tankards of ale and danced with Amelia Fallenfast until blackness overcame him. He had no memory of having come back to his apartment of rooms at the castle, and now, the aroma of the breakfast foods seemed to cause his stomach to turn over! The scent of her perfume clung to his beard, and strangely mixed with the smell of the food, caused him to feel even sicker! Young James Wallace leaped out from behind the suit of armor, standing stiffly in one cornor, and whacked his wooden sword against the facing, causing Sir James to actually flinch, and see stars as his head throbbed and pounded.
Jah's teeth and bones, my boy! Sir James muttered. In the man's hand was a missive Lady Hikenai had asked him yesterday evening to relay to a messenger the first thing this morning. He was on the way into Egremont on that mission for her, and he eyed James with no little amount of ire, as the six year old laughed and muttered a silly rhyme ....

Nit o' the louse!

James was being proceeded, as the child made his way past Sir James, by that strange friend of Lord and Lady Wallace's-------the Lady Saskia!
The numerous house guests were contiuing in their festivities. Sir James had no idea what Lord Wallace had planned for the guests today, and on the way down from his own suit of rooms, Blythe had stopped him on the stairs, to tell Sir James that Lady Hikenai was in her bedchamber preparing for the baby's birth today! Sir James knew making sure this missive reached the messenger promptly would put Hik's mind at ease, on today of all days!

His belly full - and even a coin in his pocket - he goes around looking for more gossip to make his pockets heavier. The best kind being apparetnly about Scots, he sidles close to Kelster to eavesdrop...

Sipping her drink and wondering if she should stick to a liquid breakfast today, Saskia could feel eyes on her. Looking around, she couldn’t see anyone and then her gaze travelled down. There was a little person! She’d met him before, but tongue loosened with the drink, she grinned mischievously Ere why are ye so small? Gaze intent on James, she sipped her drink and wondered if his stature was down to not eating enough?

James whirled into the diningroom, a patch over one eye, his wooden sword in his hand. He knew breakfast was prepared, and the tables laden with food, but his Uncle Kel and Aunty Hik were nowhere in sight. Neither was Neonea, his little cousin. His papa, Osbert, was missing from the celebration, this morning, too.

Ah'm the Lord of the Castle, the man of the house!
I'm the hair o' the dog and, and...and nit of the louse!

James swaggered around the table, growling out his rhyme in his gruffest pirate voice. He laughed at the last verse, for he had no idea what he was talking about, but it rhymed, it did! He thought with satisfaction, very pleased he had thought of it!

Aha!

It was Saskia!

James swiped a pork chop from a platter, held it between his teeth and ripped off a bite, a chunk which caused his cheek to poke out as he chewed furiously. As he grasped the wooden sword in one hand, and the greasy bone of the chop in the other, he rose on tiptoe and advanced on the woman. What was she holding? She was talking to two men who were having breakfast.

Yer see, I told yer I'd make us rich, I got two man traps fer that Holey Finga, one fer ye and one fer me, partner. As Saskia said this James halted. Man traps? A holey finga?

He looked in shock at the traps! Did the man lose his finger when the trap snapped shut?

Henry rubs his head sheepishly when he sees Lady Hik, he knows that he looks worse than something dragged backwards through a hedge. He doesn’t feel quite well and his head is banging. He smiles at her, happy that she is so cheerful.

”Good morning Lady. I am sorry I felled asleep at the table. I don’t think that I am good with drink.”

He shrug and hold out his hands, palm up, as a way to express his chagrin. When he hear that today might be the big day he is very excited and smile a very big smile.

”If that is true, then I must make sure I clean up and be ready to help where I can.”

Henry then smiles and say a happy hello to his friend Corster. He forget that he is wearing most of last night’ dinner on his face and in his hair as he is distracted by people coming in. He smile and greet Lady Aef a bit shyly. He is always much shy around ladies. Henry look with great worry as he see a look of pain on Lady Hik’s face. He know that look and know what it mean. He know that she must get sitted down. He see that Lady Aef is helping her, so he nod and trot off to get himself cleaned up and to find out what he can do to help.

Winstanley and Herbert moved like ghosts as they stacked plates of food higher than natural science admitted to be possible and withdrew to a quiet corner to eat.

"Geese, chicken, pigge and curlews." said Winstanley, prodding his plate. "It's better than we'd be having if we were camping with the army."

"What are you having for your next course?" asked Herbert.

"Pike, pigeons, more pigge and a salad of herbes."

"Good choice. We need to leave room for the puddings. I may just have a small tench and go straight on to the gilded apple coffins and the hastlet of fruit."

"Or we could just drink ourselves senseless."

Herbert pondered the idea.

"Fill up on food first. We normally get thrown out once we start drinking."

"Good plan."

He was dozing quite soundly by the fire - with a full belly no less, but still comes awake as he's actually spoken to.

Wor' my while? I likes the sound o' tha' an' no mistake! Wonner what this "iffomation" she's referrin' to might be...

Deciding though to give it a try, he idles over to where Saskia's sat and whispers in her ear (and indeed to a good proportion of the table, being less than expert at this), I kin tell ye wha' them what put holes in bread tend to put holes in boats too - so you's best off not havin' a preezel-baker turn boatbuilder?!? Also, never trust a man what wears a dress and thinks it to be right!

Snapping up a few bites off the table (along with three unattended cups of wine, being quite the balance artist) he idles back off, eagerly awaiting the "worth his while" part.

Aef told her squirrels to go back to their daily business, which was usually to gather as much nuts as they possibly could. 'Little crafty hoarders indeed.' Aef thought with a smile as she crawled back up on Boz's warm, wide back. "I better get back to the Castle." she said and he began a pleasant walk towards the castle entrance.

She took off his bridle and told him to stay on the castle grounds and to behave. She smirked as she saw him walk away, clearly not too happy about the "behave" command. Aef went inside, took off her cape and went to find something to eat.

"Good morning Hik and Henry!"she said as she entered the room. Aef saw in the corner of her eye that Corster had arrived on his llama too. "And good morning to you too, Corster!" She went over to them and scratched the llama behind the ear. Llamas were great animals and the one she had gotten from Cor a few months ago would be a nice addition to her small family home once they got it settled.

She turned to Hik and was about to thank her for last night as she noticed that Hik seemed not like her normal self. "Is everything okay, honey? Is it the baby?" Aef rushed to her side, took her hand and looked wit concern in her eyes from Hik's face to the baby bump.

Hikenai saw the unusual animal approach the castle. She wondered if Aef saw it, as well! As she hurried to the door, a young man entered before she could arrive in the foyer to greet him. One of the servants directed him to the keg of beer Kelster had stationed in the sitting room.

It's Corster! Hikenai shouted with glee, as she came through the sitting room doors. How's you today?! Welcome to our holiday houseparty! Hikenai was happy to see him making himself right at home!

Earlier Hikenai had come upon Kel in the great hall. They had gone to the kitchen to find Neo, who was baking bread with Alice May. The child had a dusting of flour over her blond curls, and her sleeves were rolled up, as she industriously kneaded the dough. Kel had been so excited over Hik telling him she thought the baby would be born soon, he had instructed Thackery to go get Rhea immediately! His concern touched Hik, and she assured him that it might be hours before anything happened. He worried so about her and the baby! She didn't even feel like retiring to her room yet. She felt wonderful! In fact, she had heard walking about as long as one could, might even speed up the birthing process.

Hikenai traipsed through the dining room in Wallace castle and was surprised to see Henry just waking up! His hair stood up on his head as if he had been scared out of his wits, or perhaps had a nightmare! Hik smiled at him, as he pulled a bit of chicken from his cheek. She guessed he had spent the night asleep at the table!

Good morning Henry! I hope you feel well this day! Hikenai smiled at Henry, Tonight we will have a room for you! I am sorry we neglected to make sure you had a bed last night! Many of their guests had made their way to bedrooms in the castle last night, but a few had sat before the fire into the early morning hours. There, they still nodded sleepily, or had begun to stir, as the servants came through, gathering the plates, mugs and dishes, preparing to build up the fires, and bring in breakfast. Soon Kel should be in, he is seeing to Rhea, the midwife now! Today may be our big day, Henry!

Hikenai looked through the tall windows of the castle and could see Aef with her animals. Hikenai watched as the young woman slipped from the bare back of her horse. She hoped Aefernum would come in soon! Hikenai wanted to tell her she thought the baby was coming today or tonight!

Getting himself up and taking a wash, Kelster remembered the scene from the night before, with all the glasses and food strewn about the table and on every surface and Henry falling fast asleep at the table. No doubt full of mulled wine and food. What a fantastic party that was he thought to himself, but still wondered where all the guests had ended up crashing out for the night.

As he dried himself, his thoughts then turned to his wife, for any day now it would be time for the birth of there child.

Hikenai awoke groggily, and sweeping her hand against the sheet, determined her husband had already gotten up for the day. Kel was in good form with the many guests they were entertaining, and the holiday activities they had planned. Had they more time, Hikenai would have like to have had a ball at Wallace Castle, with music and dancing! All the festivities Kelster had organized for their guests had given him something to focus on, and something for Hik to focus on, as well! It did help to ease the apprehension she had felt over the coming childbirth.

This time next week, Hik whispered to herself, surely I will have a babe in my arms and we shall have even more cause for celebration. She clumsily sat, swung her legs off the bed and reached for her robe. As she shuffled over to her wardrobe, to choose her gown for the day, Hikenai realized the baby had shifted even lower than it had lain the day before. She dressed as quickly as she could, without Blythe to assist her. She was so large now, she no longer wore a corset or stomacher, so she could easily dress herself, just as she had back in the days she lived in Barnstaple and had lived in a simple little cottage. Hikenai looked down at herself, marveling at how her life had changed since those days. The best thing was she had Kelster, and a family now! Hikenai was no longer alone.

When she'd been talking with Aef, Saskia had felt eyes on her and a discrete glance around, saw them coming to rest on the Snot Nosed Urchin. The lad seemed to be everywhere, yet no one seemed to notice him, a useful trait indeed. Slipping away when an excitable little boy joined them, asking all about squirrels, Saskia casually wandered towards the urchin. Smiling politely, she inclined her head to the lad and in a low voice I'se betting ye get to hear and see a lot? If ye'se come across...hmm shall we call's it information....that could be useful to me, I could makes it worth yer while. Shooting the lad a wink, she went in search of a drink, thirsty work all this eating.

Aef laughed heartily at the joy radiating from the children. "It is settled then! Today we eat and have fun, and tomorrow we all go for a sleigh ride!" She couldn't stop smiling and looked forward to it already. She got up and turned to Hik, still smiling wide. "I would love to stay here and help! It will be a nice way to pay back for your courtesy. I have been around for a few labours before, so consider my hands available for squeezing and what ever else they might be useful for!" She hugged Hikenai softly.

Catching a whiff of the food on the table, she was reminded that her tummy trolls probably would like something more than just mulled wine. "Now, if you all will excuse me for a bit, my tummy tells me it's time for some filling! The smells and sights are simly irresistable." She went over to the table and found an available seat where she could endulge herself with the christmas food within arms reach.

After her conversation with Kel, Aef had continue talking to the children, telling them of the different nuts that squirrels enjoyed. Contemplating this made James' forehead wrinkle with serious thought, for it had never occurred to him that little creatures such a squirrels might have preferences! He listened solemnly considering it, until Aef offered him and Neonea a tart. They both whispered 'thank you', both smiling largely, but Aef's next suggestion casued both of them to come alive with excitement!
Aefernum had said,

Yes!
Yes!

James and Neo shouted in unison, and fairly jumped up and down before Aefernum! They loved sleigh rides and Uncle Kel did, too! James smiled happily up at his uncle, and Neo nodded, Yes, Papa!

Kel had said to Aefernum,

Spellbound, Neo slowly approached, quietly joining her cousin as James stood next to Aefernum, hanging on her every word.
James looked at Neo then, nodded at Aef and grinned. This be Neonea Wallace, my cousin! She is Uncle Kel and Aunty Hik's new daughter! They asked her if she wanted a new home....but they didn't set fire to hers! She, she----she came to live with us, but there is still going to be another new cousin, there is! One is suppose to arrive any time! James nodded emphatically for emphasis. He liked that Neo had come to Wallace Castle! He was happy for her company, and they had watched the gate of Wallace Castle every day since Neonea had come, for the arrival of the new cousin Aunty Hik and Uncle Kel kept talking about. It seemed to James like children popped up unexpectedly at Wallace Castle these days! The next one coming was suppose to be a baby!
This is Lady Aef, Neo! She has raspberry tarts in her pockets sometimes, and squirrels like her so much! She can call her horse too, and he comes right to her! James knew Neo loved the baby foal in the stable, and sometimes Neo talked about other horses she had known...Princess and Precious! But for the moment, all James could think about was squirrels. How are we going to catch the squirrels, Aef?

Aef giggled as she saw James come running towards her. "Hello there James!" she said to him and then listened to him as he blurted out his words and then do a nice gentlemanly bow. Still laughing merrily at the young lad, she then answered him, "Yes, James, it's true. They CAN be caught and taught. It's not easy to do either, but I am sure with your help, that it will be much easier!" She winked at him and then continued, "As you might know, I have a small army of furry friends following me, and they were not easy to train, but that may be due to the unfortunate history we had."

She thought back to those troublesome years and thought it best not to mention the kidnapping, the roasted squirrel meals and the Dorchester tavern they had burned down. So she cut a few corners when telling him how the squirrel army had come to serve with her. "You see I was looked upon as their mortal enemy for the past few years. I made the mistake of taking their holy acorn, and that got them really angry! We waged war at each other for a long time, but were finally able to make up and become friends. I asked them if they wanted a new home, since I had accidentally set fire to their home. They accepted and here we are."

Aef took a sip of her mulled wine and looked at the boys face, awaiting his reaction to her story.

Even through the blissful misery of an overfull stomach, he overhears some talk of squirrel musicians. Inching closer to the ladies (though still out of backhand range), he innocently eavesdrops,

A band o' Squirrels ... That I 'as to 'ear - surely, I kin tell th' story fer a copper or three...

Henry hears the magic word food and heads back to the table, this time he help himself instead of just waiting. The food is too delicious for words! He is still a poor mineworker and his small wages do not gives him much, so he live a meagre life eating just bread and sometimes a bit of corn. To eat such rich food is amazing to him. He hope it not make him sick because his tummy isn't used to it. He decide it is worth the risk.

Hikenai looked about at the guests, and smiled at Henry and Quan, standing near the fire, as they sipped their drinks and warmed themselves before the flames. Gentlemen, I hope you have tried some of the food we have! Don't be shy, eat up! And Hikenai grinned as she picked up a small plate, and filled it with tiny pasties, bits of cheese, biscuits, raisins, and sugared plums. She offered some to them, and smiled across the room at Kel, as he stood and talked quietly with Aef and Marae. Lovely music filled the hall as the harpist continued to play enchanting Christomas melodies.

Marae, Saskia, come join us! Have you ladies had any anything to eat yet?
Hikenai looked about, wondering where on earth Osbert and the children were. And Lilith! Surely she and Xall will be here shortly, Hikenai thought to herself. She turned and gave Neo a playful wink.
O'I'm having fun! Neo nodded at Hikenai, popped another sugared plum into her little mouth, and stared in wide eyed wonder at the village idiot as he approached the buffet.

Marae came over to Kel when he called her over. She smiled as she saw the necklace he and Hik were giving her. "Oh, wow, it's beautiful. Thank you so very much!"

Marae hugged him back and grinned as she put the necklace on. She then thanked him again as he gave her another glass of wine and smiled.

Henry listens to Quan as he speak and shakes his head. He has no idea what his friend is saying. So Henry just nod and smile, acting like he understand. Then he see the Lady Aiiane leave and he wave shyly to her wishing her well. He also raise his glass to the lady Marae, please to see her made a fuss of.

O'I' can't wait either! Neo beamed at Josina. Her voice went up into a high pitch of excitement.

Hikenai smiled at Lady Aiiane, and nodded happily, Yes, we would love to come visit you at Cockermouth! Once the excitement of the season has ended, when you and Josina are ready, please do write! The girls seem to enjoy each other's company and we would love to see you again!

Hear, hear! To Marae! Hikenai called out, lifted her glass to join in the toast Kelster made to their friend. He presented her with a necklace that reflected their friendship and Hikenai smiled at her husband's thoughtful gesture. She was happy Marae had returned to make her home in Cumberland, in Egremont.....and thought, perhaps, she would suggest to Marae that she stay on throughout the holidays, there at the castle, as their houseguest. She and Kelster had festivities planned for everyday and Hikenai hoped Marae, Henry, Saskia and their friends would not miss a thing.

Hikenai had turned to place her glass of spiced wine down, then looked up with delight to see Aefernum being led into the room by Kelster at the exact same moment, to her horror, that she heard the village idiot proclaim,
Tradition demands yer plant yer lips right ere, M'lady!

Hikenai then witnessed an act of gracious allowance in the face of ignorance that she would not forget as long as she lived. The Lady Aiiane kindly gave the poor idiot a peck! Hikenai was aghast at the village idiot's boldness, and hoped the good lady knew he was the town pet, scorned by some, tolerated by others, accepted for himself, despite his station and intellectual limitations, by those who knew the simple, basic kindness in his heart. Oh but the boldness of his demand! It nearly made Hikenai stagger towards him with one hand stretched out to stop what he had put into motion! Yet Lady Aiiane took the situation in gracious stride.

She approached Hik and Kel with Josina, and said,

Neonea and Josina had been in delighted conversation. Hikenai could see the disappointment reflected in Neo's eyes as the girl prepared to make her departure with her aunt.
Lady Aiiane, we are so happy that you came to celebrate the season with us! I hope perhaps we can arrange a visit for Josina and Neonea, perhaps in the spring? We would like to see Neonea widen her circle of friends in the county. Again, it has been such a pleasure to have you join us!

He'd followed the Lady Aiiane around the room, sure Jah would not deprive him of his experience of a lifetime. The Lady finally coming to a standstill beneath a sprig of mistletoe, he removed his hat, spat on his hands to smooth his hair back and sidled up beside his dream woman.

Tapping Aiiane on the shoulder, he leered Tradition demands yer plant yer lips right ere M'Lady. Pointing to his lips and then the mistletoe above them, he puckered up and braced himself.

He just knew, one kiss and she'd be his forever, she'd be kicking down his door to marry him, never minding the fact he lived with a litter of pigs, true love would conquer all!

As the party now seemed in full swing, with everyone seeming to have a good time, Kel took hold of a wine glass and hit it with a fork to get everyone's attention. If I may have you're attention please everyone, I would just like to say a few words.

Gesturing for Marae to come over, Kelster the coughed before he spoke. As most of you know, Marae here moved to Egremont a few short weeks ago. She moved here from Somerset after she made so many friends here during the long war with the enemy. From the moment she arrived she has done nothing but work good for the entire community, not just Egremont but the whole of Cumberland. Therefore I would like to give her this small gift from me and Hik but present it from all the friends she has made so far and from those friends she is yet to meet.

Taking out a box, he opened it and presented it to Marae.




It's a friendship necklace Marae. Holding out his arms to give her a hug, he then picked up his glass and proposed a toast. To our very special friend Marae and to all those Friends, present and future we are blessed with in Cumberland.


After the toast was made, Kel smiled at Marae. Offering her another glass of mulled wine, he then heard a knock at the door. Where's Thackery got to now? He muttered to himself. Excuse me all, I must answer the door. He rushed to the door for he knew anyone out there in this weather would be very cold. He opened the door and a very large beaming smile came across his face. Aef, it is so good to see you here at last. Opening his arms to hug his old friend, he shouted to the stable boy to take care of her horse.

Quickly Aef, come in out of the cold, we will get you some mulled wine and some food. Come, We will get you near the fire to warm you through as well. Smiling from ear to ear, he walked back into the grand hall. Look everyone, Aef is here at last.

Accepting the drink, QuannanHade continues.

"What? How could you not have seen me come in? There should've been sparks and embers and a massive flaming eruption..."

Sighing, QuannanHade admits defeat.

"It appears my Triethylaluminium, napthene or palmitate is off... I must speak to my supplier."

QuannanHade laughed at his old friends antics. He had forgotten that such things could excite the ex-Queen so...

He was about to reply that it wasn't quite how they worked, but Saskia was already off to the food table.

Eventually QuannanHade stood up from his post near the carefully controlled inferno and wanders towards the gathering of people.

She'd noticed him! Oh the heaven and the ecstasy and she was making for a sprig of mistletoe, Jah be praised! Puckering up and ready to spring forward and claim his prize, the Village Idiot was all set to for his first ever kiss off a woman of true quality. Watching her move, he let out a low phwwor, and was all set to have his wildest dreams fulfilled when she stopped in her tracks to speak with the Lady Hikenai. Oh cruel be the hand of fortune!

Looking around frantically he searched for a way to propel the Lady Aiiane forward but a few steps, to directly below the mistletoe...could he yell "fire"? Dare he risk it?

Josina, dressed in her crimson gown with cloth of gold underskirt and white silk chemise, her dark hair adorned with her mother’s sapphires, her eyes near the same color as the jewels, felt most grown up with the attention she was getting, but she had begun to wish that there was another child near her age with whom she could converse. When Neonea spoke up and brought attention to herself, Josina nearly clapped with joy.

Not being shy as a rule, without thinking to ask permission, Josina quickly went to Neo’s side. "I am most pleased to make your acquaintance, Neonea. I live with my Auntie near Keswick, maybe you can come visit me some day. I’m sure Auntie wouldn’t mind…..nor even Lord Gregarious…he’s rarely home you see…”

Aiiane laid a gentle hand upon Josina’s shoulder, her voice soft, “Josina dear, take a breath please. A blue face will not go well with your gown.” Quieted, but not daunted, Josina smiled up at her aunt, “Yes ma’am.”

As she removed her hand at turned to speak to Hik, she could not help but notice a man doffing his hat and bowing low. Years of working alongside her deceased husband’s serfs had inured Aiiane to noticing most people’s appearance, unless it was of a particularly stylish mode she had not seen before. Un-heedful of the many branches of mistletoe tacked about, Aiiane went to take a step forward to acknowledge the man’s obsequious greeting, when Lady Hik recalled her attention.

Giving him a graceful nod of her head, she retreated to the Lady’s side. “Yes, she was last in Princess Gabrielle’s care, for there was word her father, Serdan, had passed. My niece, Lady Brianna and Josina’s mother, passed some years ago. Just before her untimely demise, Gabby did have speech with me, wishing to discuss the child’s future. Alas, that conversation never took place, but shortly after, some of the Hamilton’s wherever Josina was residing, sent her to me. In actually, she is my great-niece, but as it was most confusing to explain that I was Bri’s aunt, even though much younger and thus merely addressed one another Cousin, I rarely mention that fact. Truly, the familial title is not of such importance as the love family give one another.” Smiling at the two girls in close conversation, “It is good to see her socializing with those of her own station and age. If you and Kel should ever find yourself in our part of Cumberland, I do offer the hospitality of Lord Gregarious' house.” Laughing lightly, "It is as Josina says, his duties are such that he is rarely home and why I act as his chatelaine."

The pleasure of Lady Aiiane's visit was doubled for Hikenai by the presence of Josina! The child was lovely and, as Hikenai and Kel welcomed the carolers, Hik was aware of Neonea, standing back awaiting the proper moment to speak up in welcome, as well.
