Wallace Castle

--Blythe_williams
Blythe came through the great hall, her skirts rustling quietly as she hurried along, in search of Lady Hikenai. She had been making lists all morning of the things Hikenai wanted to tend to when they visited Hawkshead. Recently Lady Hik had been given the title to the little country barony. It was a quaint, out of the way place, and Blythe looked forward to visiting there. Already there had been murmurs in the servants' quarters at Wallace castle that Lady Hik intended to leave Sir James in charge at Hawkshead! Bythe wondered at that! It did disturb her a little. Sir James no longer drank, but tucked away, on the moors of Westmorland, might he begin to feel reckless? Would he take the cork from the bottle, and in his solitude, and isolation, feel entitled to the drink, or two, that might always lead to excess?
Ah, she thought, time enough to worry about that later on, if it even comes to pass.
She smiled, thinking of how Sir James's handsome face always glowed when he saw her friend, Lorena Lanius. Lady Hik would surely not part them! If only Lorena were not married to that blackhearted Luc Lanius! No matter he had not been heard from for nearly a year! He was too evil to be dead and gone. Blythe shivered, wondering when that cruel man would reappear...but her attention was quickly taken by the mouse, calmly perched on the sideboard!

Ah, I must find Felix!
And off she went in search of Lord Kel' furry purring potentate!

Lorena stood back from the dressmakers form, smiling and nodding her approval. The fabric Lady Hikenai had chosen for her dress for the wedding of her friend, Lady Ghostwriter was lovely. With Hikenai's dark hair and eyes, she would be striking in these colors!
Ah, Mrs. Frobisher! It is perfect. It will look perfect on Lady Hikenai this weekend, when she and the Baron attend the wedding!

Aye, mum! Mrs. Frobisher muttered around the pins she clasped between her pursed lips. But I do wish she would slow down her preparations long enough to come try it on! I need to make sure I have the length of these sleeves just right!

Lorena smiled at the milliner. It did seem Mrs. Frobisher often worried needlessly, but Lo nodded, in an comforting effort to let the older woman know she understood. The dress was gorgeous and Lord Kelster had given his wife the most beautiful garnet rings and necklaces. She would be able to choose just the right pieces to wear to subtly complement the dress....
Do ye think Lord Kel will wear his kilt? 'Tis for certain many Scots will be there, as Lady Ghost is marrying Lord Seamus, Lo whispered in a conspiratorial manner.
Lorena loved a man in a kilt, and she knew that Lady Hikenai thought her husband especially handsome! Lord Kelster was quite proud of his Scottish heritage, and Lorena would not be surprised should he wear the tartan of Clan Wallace to the wedding. She did sigh a little bit, though, as she thought of it...for it made her think of Scotland all the more, and she had no idea how England and Scotland saw each other now...whether as friends or foes-----but to be sure, so many in Westmorland had Scottish kith and kin, and blood ran thicker than water! There was much water under the bridge of the past, of that she was certain!
Lorena looked in surprise, for Blythe was coming through the door of Lady Hikenai's bed chamber with a worried look upon her lovely face.

Blythe placed the parchment containing Lady Hikenai's 'to-do' list for the manor at Hawkshead on the bedside table and turned to Lorena and the dress maker.

I have just heard a disturbing thing! You know Lady Hik and Lord Kel will also go to Ravenglass, to Muncaster Castle, as well.....when they go on progress through Westmorland this summer...........Alice May and Thackery were discussing it just now in the kitchen! It seems Muncaster Castle is quite haunted! It is haunted, and has been for years! Everyone for miles around knows this, evidently!

Hikenai
Hikenai came through the doorway, and overheard her lady in waiting speaking to the dressmaker and Lorena. Her eyes widened, and she closed the double doors to the bedchamber, to prevent Neonea from overhearing, should she come through the doors.

Tell, tell! I do love ghost stories!

She rubbed her palms together, kicked off her high heeled shoes, and plopped down on a stool near the open window. The cool breeze scented with the privit blossoms, drifted across the window sill, and lightly raised goosebumps on Hik's arms.

Tell us, Blythe!

Well, what I have heard............'tis very strange, and may be only so much tale telling, mind you, Blythe lowered her voice to a whisper, as she ducked her head, and grinned at Hikenai, but those who spoke of it to me, mentioned these things, Blythe sat down next to Hikenai, and blurted it out!
..............hearing footsteps, seeing the door open of its own accord, hearing a crying child, or a singing woman, candles lit or being extinguished inexplicably, feeling themselves patted, experiencing changes of room temperature, chest pains, and even being inexplicably tossed out of the bed!
Hikenai
Hikenai smiled, and rose from the stool, for she heard the babies and wished to go to them before the nurse did.

Blythe, perhaps you might do some research and find out exactly what legends there might be concerning Muncaster Castle? She knew that often episodes such as the ones Blythe just listed had very explainable causes. Being the romantic sort of person she was, Hik had hoped for more that just descriptions of incidences of strange happenings. She yearned for stories, and legends, for historic tales that might engage the imagination.....

She smiled at the dressmaker, Lorena, and Blythe, as she smoothed down her skirt and crossed the floor.

Mrs. Frobisher, as soon as I see to the babes, I will come and let you do the final fitting. The dress is lovely! The wedding of Ghostwriter and Seamus is very special to the Baron and me. I thank you for designing such a fine dress for me to wear.

Hikenai winked at Blythe. I am serious, Blythe. I have heard the library at Muncaster is teeming with ancient books and manuscripts. Perhaps when we travel there in a few weeks, I shall let you do some investigation and research on the origin of the hauntings. There might be documentation left there, in the castle library.

Blythe was most out done!

Here Lady Hikenai had her researching the ghostly tales of Ravenglass, and hauntings at Muncaster castle, and the NNGO would have a level four port completed within the coming week at An Gort, unless a miracle from Jah prevented it! What did England have? Do we even have one level four port anywhere? Blythe was most irritated as she considered the ghost stories she was trying to sort out, when what she perceived as a very real danger, lie just across the open sea!

When she looked up and saw Lady Hik hurry into the room, she hoped the annoyance she felt over the research she was doing was not apparent on her face. Instead, Blythe gasped at the words from Lady Hikenai's mouth.

We are turning the Westmorland Ball into a fund raiser for the ports of Westmorland!

Hik paced back and forth before Blythe, and animatedly gestured about.

I want you to put away your supernatural research for now, and come with me to the Inn, to prepare for the Ball. This is much more important! We are going to decorate, move in numerous kegs of ale, and I am sending missives out immediately, to all mayors in Westmorland, to hopefully enlist their assistance with more donation corn and wood on their local markets. We have a King and Queen contest to organize, and a number of other activities that I hope will bring in money for the ports.

Lady Hikenai's face was glowing with excitement, and it was all Blythe could do to keep up with her. She placed the bookmarker in the journal she was reading, and prepared to follow Hikenai from the room.

Tell me more, Lady Hik! I want to know just what I can do to help! Blythe snatched up her valise full of parchment, quills, and stoppered pots of ink, and flew out of the room after Lady Hikenai.

Kelster
As the messenger left after dropping off a painting of Muncastor Castle, Kelster unwrapped it and looked at the castle he now had as the Baron of Ravenglass.

Calling out to his wife to come and have a look, he thought to himself that it was about time him, his wife, Neo, Matthew and Sara went over to see his other castle. After all, it belonged to him and his family now being part of his lands.

What do you think of the new castle my love? Do you think it's time we paid a visit there?

Hikenai
"Muncaster Castle looks quite impressive, dearest! It's much larger than I had imagined....." The portrait of the castle revealed a stately, formidable stucture, surrounded what appeared to be a fine garden. Hikenai knew the River Esk was nearby, as well, and she envisioned a happy journey south to Ravenglass, and enjoyable days with Kel and Neoena. They could possibly fish, and have a picnic by the river's edge. "Oh yes, Kel, let's go to Ravenglass! And after we see to things at Muncaster, perhaps, as we are traveling, we can continue on Hawkshead. This will seem like a holiday for us and the children, Kel!"

Hikenai
The Wallaces had the wedding of Shellbear and Worf to attend on the weekend. Coming through the doorway of her dressing chamber, Hikenai handed to the ladies maid the chest containing her jewelry, and she clasping the drying cloth about her, she ran a hand through her damp hair.

"These are the jewels Baron Ravenglass has given me." She giggled at the formality. It took her a moment sometimes, when she, herself, was addressed so formally, and she so she practiced, to try to get the titles to roll naturally from her lips, but so far, she greatly preferred to be called Hik. They were really only Hik and Kel, but in London, at the Tower, and in the House of Lords where all were seemingly so proper, and paid attention to such things, Hikenai was forever on edge for fear of addressing someone without the proper term their title gave them. It was both wearying, and unnerving. I am a simple herbalist, a shopkeeper....

Being a wife and mother was the only calling Hikenai had ever felt truly sprung from her heart. It was her devotion there, in the area of home and hearth, that she felt would stand her in good stead when she and Kel went to Ravenglass and Hawkshead, to meet their tenants, and to survey the crops there.

But now, she had another wedding to plan for, so Hikenai turned to the dressmakers form, which held the latest dress she'd had made for such an occasion. I hope Kelster likes it! She thought about her husband, and wished he was here now....then she blushed!

Blythe was up and working, in the predawn hours, preparing for the Wallace's journey to the south. Yesterday, she had packed her trunks, and also those of Neonea, and the twins. She was happy to accompany the Wallace family on their visit to Muncaster Castle, but now, as she hurried down the corridor of Wallace Castle, on the way to the Lady Neonea's bedchamber, a cold sweat suddenly sprung up on her forehead.

Surely I am not becoming ill?

She felt well rested, despite being up late into the previous night, and was looking forward to traveling south to Ravenglass, yet, now she felt a floating sort of sensation.

Outside Neo's door, Lorena could hear giggles coming from within. Evelyn Lanius had spent the night with Neonea-----and they were already awake, no doubt unable to sleep for excitement over the trip! She entered the room, and the laughter faded....Neonea and Evelyn appeared to be sleeping, those little imps! Lorena tiptoed forward, wondering how long either girl would hold out, with their eyes tightly shut, feigning sleep, before they would once more dissolve into giggles? As she approached the bed, Lorena suddenly stopped short, seeing the girls breathing easily, with little arms thrown lax over their heads, their faces slack in deep slumber!

Whose laughter had she heard?

Kelster
Waking up with a start, Kelster looked around the room as if something or someone had awoken him. Seeing nothing he turned to his wife beside him still fast asleep. Kissing he softly on the forehead, he jumped out of bed. Today was the day they set off for Ravenglass and Muncastor Castle. He was so looking forward to seeing it for the first time. He was also excited at the prospect of seeing the citizens of Ravenglass who must be wondering what there Baron looked like.

As he started to wash he again felt that cold feeling at his back. What was that he thought to himself? Shrugging it off his mind started to think of the day ahead as he had risen early.
I can't wait to get off, he whispered to himself but he had to wait till everyone was awake and ready.

Osbert
We pulled the wagon up to the side entrance, and breathed a sigh of relief. Cuthbert jumped down, rubbed his bum, and stretched his young, lean body; the ride from Manchester had been excruciatingly slow, what with the precious cargo.

Osbert hopped down, well, more like creaked down, his old bag o'bones stiff and aching...I'm getting too old for this, he thought...his joints popped and knocked quite loudly these days, yet he couldn't bring himself to slow down his pace...too much to be done, it's not possible to pause...

"All right, Cuthbert, let's you and I get this into the hall, and see what we can do with it."

And no small task that was; the sheer size of the crate took all of their strength to lift. Getting it up the first set of steps was feat enough in itself, and Osbert could feel the flush on his face, and the depths of his lungs as they clutched for a clear breath. "Son, run and find us a push cart, so's we don't end up busting a blood vessel, or something else!" Osbert said to Cuthbert. The young man gave a laugh and went off into the storage quarters in search of a cart.

This was a gift, a surprise that none of the family had known about. He felt sheepish about his irregular appearances here, what with his constant travels up and down the roads of the county. He welcomed this short pause in his schedule, welcomed the chance to reunite with family in the comfort of the castle, welcomed the thought of being able to sleep in his own bed once again...

He carefully began to unpack the painting, being most careful not to take any chance on damaging it; the jostle of the trip was nerve wracking enough-he worried every time the wagon made the smallest bounce, but, from the looks of things, it had survived intact, and he was quite relieved. He took a few steps back, and cast his gaze upon this...this masterpiece...

The creaking and squeaking of the cart on the hall floor neared; the two men carefully lifted the piece into position, and slowly wheeled it into the great room. "Son, what do you think? Above the fireplace? Would it look good there?..."

The family portrait had made its way home...

ooc: Thank you, Gretchen! Big Hugs!

Kelster
After they had made the trek back from Ravenglass as to what can only be discribed as a very, very strange visit there, Kelster noticed the doors were open to the castle. Jumping down off his horse he crept very slowley and quietly into the main hall. Turning as he heard voices he made his way towards the sound.

Spotting his brother and his nephew looking at something , he crept up behind them. Then he spoke in a loud voice to surprise the both
. Damn fine looking bunch are they not. Two of the most beautiful ladies in all of England and just look at those two dashing men there. Very good looking they are although i think the man on the right is the best looking one of all.

Neonea
Home.

When I woke up this morning, I had a funny feeling in the pits of my stomach. I hadn't really understood what it was, other than it was built up of a ball of excitement in my gut. I felt like running and skipping around; full of energy that I could not comprehend. For some reason, it had felt like I had just arrived to this place, or maybe just settled. I leaped out of bed, and with the help of Blythe, I dressed in a dress I thought was so pretty. There was a time I didn't have dresses this pretty, or even a bed so nice.

Home.

It was all I wanted for so long. I had that now. The sunny day had brought a renewed energy to me, and I relished in it.

I went outside soon after I was dressed, clutching the wooden doll I was given not too long ago, and went to the field to pick flowers for my mama.
