[RP] - Meeting with the Duke of Styria

Graufang
31. Juli 1461

--------------------------------------
31. July 1461

"Your notices were public, yes. Even if they were late. A couple of years too late. And I have better things to do, than to send my priests out to look for your notices. - Even with much generosity, you are to blame for your lack of assistance to your sheeps. Where where your notices as styria asked for the church's aid? Where where your clerics, as the duke wrote to rome in deep despair? The only response was silence - Until today! So do not dare to distort the fakts! You'll only harm your not existing reputation further! " Graufang makes a step forward. "As you know, Abendlicht von Schenkenbach is held captive by the inquisition. Did he find help? Did he get assistance? You leave your former Primate alone, without any assistance, although we offered the opportunity to cooperate. You should really be ashamed of yourselves. You're besmirching the robe you are wearing and you're besmirching the holy sanctifications. - I 'm ashamed for you" A short break, before the old man continues to speak "You want to send crusaders? Well, go on, I'll be waiting for your swords. I prefer a crippled body than a spoiled soul."

Laella

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I smiled at the people and looked to the Emperor

Your Majesty, because you have to prove yourself. These misguided have prosecuted a clergy of Aristotle in the locale. A church that should never have passed as enshrined religion. I urge Styria, that brother Abendlicht of Schenkenbach immediately sacked and compensation to the Church for heresy on an indictment, an accusation which may represent only the Holy Inquisition, ie from mother Ysabet. The cleric is ever charged and is still housed in buying that more people get hurt by the absence of a priest.

and showed to Ysabet.

Why should listen to Rome on a sect of misguided? I am not the spokesperson for Rome, that is, His Eminence Borromeo Galli. But apparently you take you right out to poison a confused mind. An act that does just the creature without a name. But yes so your shows even more that you would rather want to let the people suffer, by the challenge that the Church sends troops. Dear your poisoned the other people and let this suffering than that your einseht that your in your environment only harms the people.

The speeches of each character brought about an inaudible cacophony. Silent and tired, the Emperor starts to massage his temples. When Imperial Marshal Ranian told him that a false religious wished to enter the Imperial Place, he waved his hand to refuse. There were too many people here. He needed calm, while the verbal sparring which was occuring between the false Patriarch and Her Eminence Madleen Johanna of Schenkenbach became truly unbearable. His strong voice echoed once again in the throne room.

"Enough ! We can not tolerate such a bad show in Our palace."

He scanned the room, looking at the Duke of Styria and the Cardinals.

    "Duke Adam Fugger,
First of all, tell your Patriarch to monitor his words, or We swear that he will leave Strasbourg without his tongue.
Now, If you want to speak about oaths, We remind you that you had three duties : Auxilium, Obsequium, and Consilium. You never fulfilled one of those duties under Our reign. Therefore, you are still Duke of Styria because We decided it. Don't push Us to reconsider such a decision. Don't abuse Our mercy."

Then he turned to the Cardinals and Primates, who were obviously just as irate as he was.

    "Eminences,
We have announced Our decision. Duke Adam was warned. If he continues to persecute priests on his land, he will have to answer for his actions in front of Rome and Strasbourg. No one will protect his province against God's wrath. And any person who has assaulted a priest will be punished. In other words, the future of Styria is in his hands. It is up to him to make the right decisions to avoid a crusade.
If the Holy Inquisition and Eminence Ysabet want to talk to the Patriarch, We will give them access to his apartments. You will be able to resolve this matter in private."

He stood up, determined to put an end to this meeting.

"Our decision was made. Duke Adam Fugger, You know what you have to do, to be allowed to go back to Styria."

31. Juli 1461

We, Ludwig von Frayner, Emperor of the Sacrum Romanorum Imperium Nationis Emperor Germanicæ, promise, guarantee, certify and swear by the Almighty God that We will be the defender of God, the Holy Church Aristotelian and Our nation in all its needs and business. We swear to protect and preserve your assets, dignity and rights ; the same applies to all the specific areas of the Empire, as they are the French-speaking territories, the united German lands, the Italian provinces, the county of Holland and the Slovenian country. With God's help and the Books of Virtues!"

.“

31. July 1461

Adam put his hand soothingly on Graufangs shoulder, as he realized the man wanted to fly into a rage again. The pressure of his fingers was not strong, but the touch was enough to let the old man remain silent.
"Yes, you have made clear how much your forgiveness is worth," Adam said bitingly. Even if he expected a harder decision, it annoyed him. He did not see his mistake and felt condemned, only because he was the Duke of the unloved province. "And something else you have made clear. Four months ago - and today again. Your oath. I like to repeat it if it is not familiar to you.

It was:
"We, Ludwig von Frayner, Emperor of the Sacrum Romanorum Imperium Nationis Emperor Germanicæ, promise, guarantee, certify and swear by the Almighty God that We will be the defender of God, the Holy Church Aristotelian and Our nation in all its needs and business. We swear to protect and preserve your assets, dignity and rights ; the same applies to all the specific areas of the Empire, as they are the French-speaking territories, the united German lands, the Italian provinces, the county of Holland and the Slovenian country. With God's help and the Books of Virtues!"

Is Styria so close to your heart, that you have forgotten to mention it? Therefore I haven’t sworn an oath to you and your behavior at that time, explained only your decision today
. "

Ysabet
Monday, the 31th of July 1461

Ysabet had not said a word since the beginning of the meeting. She hadn´t been asked to say something and therefore she remained quiet and observed. She had been irritated by the quarrels of Graufang and her Excellency Madleen Johanna of Schenkenbach. Graufang wasn´t a person to argue with. He would never listen and always twist someones words to his advantage. She would have ignored him and actually she wouldn´t have had the courage to start a fight before the emperor. It wasn´t appropriate and pointless.

But nevertheless she was angry about Graufangs words and had to pull herself together to stay quiet and not react. There was no limit to his arrogance and his bad behavior. His unfounded insults were one thing, but the way he said them was even more abusive and misplaced. She shouldn´t let him get to her. His thoughts were irrelevant to her.
The words of his Eminence Egal reassured her.

But the last words of Graufang let her face turn pale as ash. So it was true. It really was true. She hadn´t known. Wherefrom should she have known? Abendlicht von Schenkenbach was held captive by Graufang and his minions. But the emperor had said they should let him go, hadn´t he?
After the next words of the emperor she realized that it actually had been the only demand the emperor had made. Adam shouldn´t harm the priests of the holy roman church, but nothing else. It seemed like in religious matters Adam and Graufang had won before the Emperor at last. The emperor didn't object to the fact that Adam changed the state religion of Styria. He didn´t disapprove that Adam and the hole reigning family of Styria converted to the reformed church and were therefore heretics.
Ysabet had to support herself against the wall as the realization came over her. She closed her eyes for a short time to be able to recollect herself and recover from the jar.
It would have been obvious, if she had thought about it. If the emperor disapproved about the change of state religion in Styria, he would have said something after the proclamation on march 15. It was five months ago now.

After she opened her eyes again, she nodded to the words of the emperor to show that she had listened to him. She would have the possibility to speak to Graufang. Well, but first she would have to speak to her superiors.

Ranian
A single gesture and Ranian understood the desire of Emperor and while she dictated order to the guard in the room appeared the chaos among the Aristotelian church representatives and the Patriarch, but he wasn't worried of the situation, none of them, no matter how angry they were, could cause danger. The chaos was stopped by the Emperor from his throne, with anger then turned to the Duke and ordered him to keep calm the old Graufang, which the Duke made immediately, then in the same voice answered the questions that the Duke had put, question regarding oaths. Ranian saw the Emperor get up from his throne and always pointing to the Duke reminded him that it was his judgment. The woman was already approaching the Duke and the Patriarch to taking them back to their apartment, the speeches were over at least that you thought, the judgment issued and Aristotelian clerics reassured, but she had to stop, because the Duke shooting immediately the word addressed to the Emperor. The Duke wanted to remember the formula that his Majesty had spoken when he was crowned and laid still more questions. The Marshal, looked the Duke, a slight smile appeared on his face and shook his head, then looked towards his Emperor figuring out if had to go and bring the two in their rooms or had to wait for that answer gives the Duke.

"Duke Adam Fugger. Let Us remind you that such an oath is the one that all Emperors have pronounced since the advent of the Empire. It is an age-old and historic oath, which has existed for centuries. An oath which is the heart of our Great Nation. Dn't try to rewrite history with your own words, and don't try to give a political purpose to what is and will remain an imperial tradition. It is ridiculous to sully an imperial institution. As it is ridiculous to try to justify your actions, retroactively. Your behavior is an insult to your people, and to the Empire.

Anyway, your fate no longer depends on you. If you didn't take the oath, you're not Our vassal. If you're not Our vassal, you're nothing. Accordingly, you'll be thrown into jails until the Duchy of Styria decides to pay your ransom. We hope for you that they will be reactive: if We don't receive any answer, you'll be very likely to spend your last days in Strasbourg."

The Emperor looked again the Cardinals ; and his eyes met the face of the representative of the Holy Inquisition.

"And because Adam Fugger is not Our vassal... Eminence Ysabet ? We changed Our mind. Adam Fugger and the Patriarch will be at the disposal of the Holy Inquisition. You are free to question them and treat them as you want. Their fate is in your hands. Perhaps, it is high time to teach them the precepts of the true faith."

Gustavo stood in the throne room with his Marshal, as always you never walked away from her and if he did it was for important issues that the ordering. Squire followed him with his eyes Ranian and when he saw coming toward him he realized that had to perform an errand.

Your orders Marshal!

said even before the woman to tell him what to do. Ranian approached the young man and told him what to do and what to say. the young man once hailed militarily Marshal walked towards the exit of the throne room. A quick strides and walked down the long corridors of the palace until you reach the exit, went down the few stairs that gave the gardens, walked along the avenue flourished and came to the gates

[July 31, 1461 - Out of the gate of the Imperial Palace]

Gustavo came to the gates, a carriage stood out from it some men to wait, the squire approached them

Good day to you Sir!

He said politely to the present

I'm Gustavo Merisi squire of Marshal Imperial Giada Ranian Dei Cristallo. I come to you to inform you that His Majesty is indisposed at the moment and can not receive you, If the Lords may want to come to the Palace in another day, and ...You can make an appointment by letter with the Secretary of his Majesty the Emperor. We regret for the long journey you have had to face. If you don't want to take your journey in Strasbourg there are excellent and honourable inns where you can stay
Laella

Erinnert Euch an Frankreich.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I looked out quietly. When I heard the words of the Emperor I glanced at Eminence Galli and Ysabet. I would give her the command immediately. I looked to the emperor and said, quiet and friendly

Your Majesty, I thank you. We will certainly take care of it. Nevertheless, I have a request. My primary aim is that my cousin, Reverend Abendlicht of Schenkenbach is released from prison. I would not like to enter a prison by force to free a prisoner unlawful. A command of you would also suffice. I would like Reverend Abendlicht of Schenkenbach his duties again can completely run again after he has recovered from the rigors of prison. It is equally important for the church, another reason why His Eminence Galli and sister Ysabet appeared that in Styria again the Aristotelian holy Church is established as the state religion again. This requires only one instruction from you. I say it openly to you. Rome will not like it, that will be a different religion in the empire that reigns as the state religion in one province. Reminds you of France. The three of us here are very keen on, to regulate all this without bloodshed, if you would give to the two commands.

I turned to eminence Galli and whispered in his ear

Your Eminence, you're out of position ways higher than me. Although I am the direct leadership of the church on German territory, including Styria, but you are the primate SRING. I will give the command Ysabet sister to a process for the Holy Inquisition only if it is your good will. The Emperor, as you heard yes, agree with a process.

"An age-old and historic oath, which has existed for centuries?" Graufang laughs. "I served Longjohn Silver I.,may his soul rest on the sun peacefully, the first emperor in history of the empire. You have been gone mad, Ludwig, as some Emperors before you. I saw kings and emperors come and go, since the empire was foundet but your lack to see the reality and your hunger for power is absolutly unique. The Fugger-Dynasty was loyal to the throne, long before you were born and since the first days of the empire. The Fugger-Dynasty was there from the beginning. We gave our sweat and shed our blood, gave our hearts and souls, to built the foundation on which the throne you are now sitting on stands stable. The crown you are wearing is forged by us. - So, if someone is rewriting history, then it's you, Ludwig von Frayner!"

31. Juli 1461

Ysabet
Monday, the 31th of July 1461

Ysabet listened to the words of Adam Fugger and feared the emperor wouldn´t understand this insult well. And she was right. She couldn´t understand how someone could talk like this to the emperor of the SRING. And the Emperor obviously wasn´t pleased anymore.

When the eyes of the emperor meet hers and he spoke to her, Ysabet nodded serious. She answered.

"Thank you, your Majesty. Please don´t call me Eminence, though. I´m no Cardinal. I will immediately make contact with her Eminence Carlotta Isabell "Kali_" Borgia. She is my superior in the holy inquisition and I need her approval. Afterwards I will know, what we intend to do with Adam and Graufang Fugger."

His Eminence Borromeo Galli heard the words from the self-appointed "Eminence" who was offending His Majesty, so He replied You, silly man, forgot that every crown and every power sit under the Almighty's blessings, which come Aristotelian and will ever reach all the thrones through the words and the teachings of the Prophets and Saints, represented by Us, humble and unworthy servants of the Holy Institution, the only one which took the baton directly from Christos.
Without being loyal to the Emperor and the Holy Aristotelian Roman Church, there's no more King or Lord to serve.

After having ended his speech, he turned towards Her Excellency Laella and said Unfortunately, I'm no more the Primate, too, but You'll may report about that to the Cardinal who's going to be the new Primate, His Eminence Federico Edoardo Borgia., then he talked to Her Excellency Ysabet Your Eccellency, You're doing it right, deciding to talk to the Cardinal of the Inquisition who manages this matters: she'll may help on working on the case. And I'm ready to help, if needed.

Adam
31. Juli 1461

"You punished me because I hold up a mirror to you to show you the truth?" Outraged Adam shouted this question to the Emperor, waving the hands, which was a try to soothe him down. The own dismay let him be loudly. The decision of the emperor, to put Graufang and his fate in the hands of the Inquisition of the false church, was a death sentence. In non-reduced volume Adam tried to avert what was decided. "Why you surrender His Holiness Graufang and me to death? Because I pointed you to a flagrant error in the oath? The oath was correct, when the German Empire was one, but since the Styria and Mainz have left the German Empire, he would have had to be rewritten and although I never swore an oath to you, I was loyal to you. "On the Styrian way. "Which of your vassals can say this?"

Adam looked to the Emperor, then to the representatives of the HDAK, which already rubbed their hands and at least to Graufang, whom he bring ruin upon by is bragging. Him and all the people who needed the blessing and were pushed back to the sect that they did not love, if the HDAK gained the ear of the Emperor, "If you," the Duke turned back to the Emperor. His voice was rough as he said, " give the lives of His Holiness and me into the hands of the Inquisition, you will not only lose 10,000 thalers, because I prefer the cooler location, if I have a choice between dungeon and the stake, what is more, you will destroy the relationship of Styria to the Empire finally. You ..... "will provoke a civil war, and every priest of the HDAK will burn, he choked down. That was not the right way. The Duke paused, looked at the floor and fought a short fight with himself. How difficult was it to swallow the own pride when you asked for something - for people who are loved and whose life and soul you could save? It was easy.
"I beg you, do not hold on to your decision with which your surrender the death of a man who has dedicated his life to the faith and the love between the people and who is here, because I have asked him to. Let His Holiness Graufang go with freedom and do not succumb to the demands of the HDAK. The Aristotelian faith is enshrined in the Constitution of Styria, as it is right. The people of Styria are close to the heart of The Reformed Aristotelian Church. Does not punish innocent people for my behavior, which has angered you, and for which I beg you for forgiveness. Be clement and show mildness, how you have already done it several times today.”

Ysabet looked to Adam Fugger. Should she says something? She hadn´t been told so, but...
he looked desperate and all she wanted to find was a mutual solution, not punishment.

"We don´t want to kill you or hurt you. We want to help. The Inquisition aims to save souls, not to destroy them.
I´m sure we could find a solution, if you and yours came back in the arms of the church. We could work together to achieve what you wish for Styria. I know I have made mistakes, but we could try."

Graufang
July, 31, 1461

Adams speech let Graufang become silent, ignoring Gallis speech completly. The times to serve are over. But to explain this to the heretic would be a real waste of time. The duke should not beg for the life of an old man, he should beg for his own life. Graufangs days are over and death does no fear him. Even if the threat of getting burned struck him a blow. He saw the burning of Pat and this was a sight he'll never forget. To see Adam going down, would kill the patriarch by breaking his heart. "Your Majesty." The patriarchs voice becomes soft. "Forgive the words of my nephew. He's young and a hothead. But his heart is straight. As it is written in the holy scrolls: "Generosity comes from the soul, and you have be noble in your heart." So be as generous as the writing asks from you, spare Adams life and set him free."
Graufang sees himself not worthy to die as a martyr but If the Lord demands this sacrifice, the old man will be glad to obey. A short look to Ysabet. There' ll be never a return to the heretic church. They have had their chance to an peacefull co-existence. But several years have elapsed and they did not react.
Graufang makes the step back and stands beside Adam. The cleric will never leave the duke and the guards have to drive him out by force, if they want him to go.

--------------------------------------------------------------

31. Juli 1461

Adams Rede lässt Graufang verstummen, Gallis Worte komplett ignorierend.
