[RP] - Meeting with the Duke of Styria

Ludwig_von_frayner
Taking a calm tone, the Emperor replied to Adam Fugger, ignoring the words of the Patriarch.

You are responsible for your own mistakes, Adam Fugger. The presence of the Patriarch of the Reformed Church in Strasbourg was already an affront to the Empire. Despite his guest status, he has exceeded all limits, broken all laws, threatening, blaspheming. A man who doesn't respect anything or anyone ; A man who is only able to wail, shout or insult when he speaks, can't bring peace of mind of the people of Styria. He can only bring madness and chaos. The Patriarch has no sense of what spirituality means. Because he led innocents on the wrong path, his punishment is fair.

… And it is the same for you. You have abused our mercy ; and abused the credulity of your people, for political purposes. Instead of bringing them peace, with your decisions, you brought them problems and concerns, brigands and heretics. Last but not least, you confessed to not take the oath. Accordingly, your destiny is in the hands of the Holy Church.

He looked at the Cardinals, and the representative of the Holy Inquisition ; and answered them, once again.

"Eminence Madleen Johanna of Schenkenbach, We want first to clarify something. It is not threatening Us that you'll get something from Us. Unlike the Kingdom of France under the reign of Eusaias, the Imperial Crown doesn't support the Reformed Church of Styria, and doesn't appoint heretics as Ministers. There is only one religion in the Empire: it is the Roman and Aristotelic Religion. It is written in the Magna Carta. As a result, all text and all laws enacted in Styria, which violate Our fundamental law, is obsolete.

You should bear in mind that under Our reign, the Empire has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to its religion, and to its Church. Our soldiers are currently fighting against heretics from the West who are going to come burn churches in Savoy. Several months ago, we have struggled against the heresy in Geneva and Helvetia. In our fight We released the Spanish kingdoms from the heretical threat that hung over them.

We conducted many battles, and many of Our soldiers died to defend the true faith. Moreover, according to Our wish, a Concordat is currently being signed between Rome and Strasbourg. So, We can not accept to let you accuse Us for being immobile. By providing Adam Fugger and the Patriarch to the Church, We are doing something that no one else would have ever done."

He paused a moment.

"Now, be sure that We will make an official announcement, demanding to the governement of Styrie to release priests imprisoned. We will also remind them their duties and obligations towards the Roman and Aristotelic Church. And if they don't comply, We'll be stronger."

He slammed his cane on the floor.

"That's enough for today. Imperial Marshal Ranian ? Throw Adam Fugger and the Patriarch into jail, and keep them at the disposal of the Holy Church."

Does the emperor listen to his own words? Only one religion? What's with the holy german church? They stick to rome, certainly, but they have their own church with their own primas, just as the reformed have. Graufang, once bishop of the german church, shakes his head. This man is absolutly incompetent and he has no idea of what' s going on in his empire. He don't know a thing about styria nor about the churches in his empire. He's swearing false oaths and he' s raping history by his will to dominate history and future.
If the creature without a name was looking for someone to bring civil war and crusades to the empire, it has found a willing person with Ludwig von Frayer. - Ludwig the insane. Ludwig the warmonger. Ludwig the worshipper of destruction. - There will be no luminous byname for this emperor in history.
May god, the lord an protector of mankind, be mercy-full and call this man home before he can unleash a firebrand to the world, which he received by God as a fief and which he's commanded to protect. A servant to the people he should be, not a servant to his self-perception.
Graufang thinks to Abendlicht. With the patriarch inprisoned, there will be no one to hold back the inquisition. And so there will be three martyrs. Adam, Graufang and Abendlicht. There's no doubt, that Adams soul is straightly going to the sun. But the old man feels pain, by knowing Adams fate. But there are no chains, no cells, that would stop the soul of the duke to raise to the Lord and His glory.
May all the heretics and blasphemies life on and seal the document of destruction of their world. Adam Fugger will watch them from paradise. May God, the most wise and gracious one, give a quick death to the duke and spare him any further torture of body and mind. And maybe God, the most merciful, will have a little place for an old fool to rest, which brought so much dispair to his own familie...
Graufangs hand finds the shoulder of Adam. "Now our faith will be put to the test but do not fear the earthly punishment. The glory of heaven is waiting and all the angels of light and mercy will guide your soul. You are a righteous and God knows his own." This is, what the old man strongly believes. As strong as he believes that he has wrapped Adam into a shroud...

31. Juli 1461

Graufangs Hand findet Adams Schulter.

31. July 1461

Adam closed his eyes for a moment. Then he nodded slowly. "So it should be”, he said, more to himself than to anyone else. He bowed his head to one side as he listened Graufang. He wished he had his confidence. His nightmares raised doubts, that God found him worthy to enter Paradise. He just nodded.
"Would you ensure that I get something to write? I have to inform my counsel and my family, "he asked the woman, Rainan, which he held out his sword." Take good care of it, and give it to me again when the time is right." Was it an invitation to help him? Yes. Even if the wife had no reason to do so, but women often did things that he didn’t understand.

All have been said, except one. He owed Ysabeth an answer. "Misguided as I was, I spent over a year trying to ask the HDAK to give Styria emotional support they needed and was dismissed. In the end I have to hear, Styria was not worth it. There will be no agreement”, he said, emphasized each word. "It is neither intended by the people nor by me. And how the HDAK try to "save" souls, that do not want to join her, I have been allowed to experience firsthand. So tell me anything! " Abendlicht was meant, who had tacitly tolerated his torture in the name of the church.

Adam demonstratively turned his head to the Marshal. "I'm ready." He was never less.

Ranian
Ranian had attended the debate in silence up to the order of the Emperor, watched Adam, his stubbornness had led him to a penalty worse than before, the prison. "Ah! If only he had been silent" thought the woman "But it is known that the Warriors didn't give up and in battle they fight to the death". Looked at the guards, who having heard them too the words of the Emperor knew what to do, it was enough of a nod their head Marshal and positioned on the sides of the two.....no longer guests but prisoners. Duke looked Ranian, his eyes no longer had that swagger when they arrived, they were sad, tired, asked her if he could receive the needed to write and then without the woman ordering him took his sword and handed it to her

" Take good care of it, and give it to me again when the time is right."

She took the sword, his words in her ears sounded like a plea for help

Quiet Duke! Will be my care keep it and .... I will try to have the writing materials

Adam gave a last response to a nun, then turned back to her saying Ranian are ready to be brought into prisons. The Marshal nodded at the man, but before you leave the room, she turned to the Emperor

Majesty! Since sister Ysabeth will interrogate the two prisoners, allow me to bring them into the tower?

It was the highest part of the building, often destined to illustrious persons who had somehow cheated or committed any serious crime

So that she can go to them at any time, and being a woman does not have to be in the midst of messy brigands and murderers

uttered those last words followed by a grimace of disgust, he knew those places and there would never any woman, much less a nun

Also the Duke Adam in these days was unwell and take him in the dungeon, where the air is healthy, foods that little sister Ysabeth instead of asking him to give him the last rites

Ranian wanted to accompany that phrase with a wry smile, but could not, sadness and anger hovered in that room and as heavy weights harrassing in the minds of all those who were present

Gerfried

........................................

31. July 1461 ~ From Graz to Strasbourg

Gerfried is concerned about the declining to enter the palace. But if they have to wait, then is has to be. The high clerics would never take a common tavern as a place to rest, so it's up to the guards to find adequate quarters for them. Maybe is time to send a letter home. It seems to take time to see the emperor and as far as Gerfried knows Santorio, the inquisitor will be not amused, that he has to wait.
The man in armor looks up to the frontage of the palace. A very impressive building but also a monument of amour-propre. The ascetic living man is disgusted by the luxuriousness. But this is not one of his concern. He's only a guard and a sworn enemy of all heretic and perverted souls. - Living or dead. May they all burn and have their souls thrown to the moon to suffer the eternal punishment they diserve.
Gerfried turns to the carriages and beckons to the coachmen. They shall prepare their vehicles, to drive the clerics to the inner city. Of course they are directed to avoid the slums of the huge town on the way...

Ludwig_von_frayner
The Emperor looked at the Imperial Marshal who was about to leave the room, and answered her question.

Indeed. Imperial Marshal Ranian. Until Adam Fugger and the Patriarch are questionned by the Church, you will be responsible for their supervision.

Then, He turned to the Cardinals. He began to be tired, and wanted to put an end to this long meeting.

We will do as we said. You can retire, Eminences. Be sure that the Empire will honor his word.
Our official announcement will be published in the coming days.

Ranian nodded at the words of the Emperor, then turning to the two prisoners spoke to two

Duke! Patriarch! Please follow me

The woman passed the two reaching the target where they waited, left on their sides the two guards without giving them orders to capture them with force, saw the gesture of Duke in delivering to you the sword of his own volition, but only to accompany them. While awaiting that approached came his Squire Gustavo, who reported that the company that had come to the Palace was gone not very happy. Ranian remained impassive to what was reported, had imagined the reaction and the discontent of those people, then came up to the ear of the servant and said some things

31. July 1461

At least it was the tower and not the dungeon, in which they would be locked up. Adam would never forget the intervention of the Marschal Ranian, because, without her help, Graufang would have died. Such a long stay in the dungeon, he would never have survived. He also was grateful, that Graufang and he were not led away in shackles.
Because, there was nothing to say, Adam, who was holding the arm of the old man, followed the woman in silence.

Graufang
August 14th, 1461

For days Adam and Graufang were imprisoned. The old man couldn't say for how long he was forced to stay in this little room. Not really a cell but even not a room he would like to live in. Praying, talking to Adam and waiting for the heretics to come was Graufangs pastime. But, in these days, the Patriarch managed to write a letter to his brothers of the reformed church. To find a prison guard who agrees to send the letter, was difficult but not impossible. The arrival of the reformed clerics at strasbourg was not long a secret, so Graufang knew to whom he has to send the letter...

---------------------------
14. August 1461

_________

15. August 1461

Fifteen days, Graufang. Fifteen.“
Since the day, Graufang and he were arrested in the tower, they had seen nobody – except those, who brought the food an emptied the bucket which was filled with her faeces. The duke, forced to inaction, got peevish.
At least, there was an window in their room. It was a small one, but big enough to let in fresh air and to see the rising sun. Things, which had an invaluable worth, if you missed them an Adam could remember this time. Two wooden beds and strew, a table and two chairs completed the fittings. There was enough of food and drink, which was although ordinary but feed and a bucket, which they could use, when the nature called.
Fifteen days were a long time, in which Graufang and the duke were ignored. Did they want to destroy them in this way? That there was no message from Styria was not a surprise. The way from Strasbourg to Styria was a long one. Certainly his letter would have been passed out just now. He had to wait for an answer still some days. The only question he had – why did the inquisition of the wrong church do anything? Was this their solution of the problem, which Graufang and he represented? To forget them? They were wrong, if the thought so. And the emperor, too. It would be not easy to defeat Adam as the hope. At the end he would be the laughing winner. Adam had survived more than one emperor. The life at the top of the head were dangerously.

Ysabet
Monday, the 31th of July 1461

Ysabet listened to the surprisingly calm words of Graufang Fugger. It seemed to have become clear to him that they went too far and it kind of amused her that Graufang asked for forgiveness of the words of Adam, whereby he had misbehaved more than Adam.
The emperor proved her right: They had gone too far and he wasn´t willing anymore to spare them.
But it also confirmed what she had thought earlier. Madleen Johanna of Schenkenbach had been to upfront and blunt. To demand wasn´t the right way to speak to an emperor. It had been inconvenient to her and she felt bad for Madleen now, too.
Disappointed she sighed after hearing Adams words. She had hoped he would show a little sign of understanding, but nothing. This interrogation would be mostly unpleasant.
When the emperor dismissed them, Ysabet bowed and left the room with Egal and Madleen.
She would have to stay longer in Strasbourg now to interrogate Adam and Graufang. But where should she stay? The local monastery obviously she thought moments later.

Thursday, the 15th of august 1461

It had become clear that Ysabets qualm during the meeting with Adam hadn´t been only because of Abendlicht, but also a sign of coming illness. As a consequence Ysabet had stayed several weeks in the infirmary of the local monastery and couldn´t interrogate Adam. When she became healthy again she had got more than enough time to speak to her superiors in Rome and could finally turn her attention to Adam.
She went to the tower in which Adam and Graufang were imprisoned and asked the guards to take Graufang to another cell, so she could speak with Adam in private.
The guards agreed and tried to take Graufang along, if necessary they would force him to come with them.
After it was done, Ysabet stepped into the cell of Adam accompanied only by a nun, who should record the interrogation.

"Good morning, Adam Fugger." she greeted him. "I have to apologise for letting you wait so long. I have been ill after the last meeting. You have the right to be assisted by a counsel, who must be an Aristotelian faithful. Do you want to exercise this right?"

Den habt Ihr gerade rausschleifen lassen!” Seinen Beistand.

___________

15. August 1461

You have just let take him away!” His counsel. And he had proofed enormous forces for such an old man, as the guards felt compelled to remove him vigorously out of the cell because Graufang had refused to leave Adam alone. There had been a fight: Adam, who wanted to help the old Fugger, and Graufang on one side against a multitude of guards, who finished the fight quickly. Several ejected curses and wounds later it was accomplished - the patriarch sat in another cell, Adam was alone. For a brief moment at least - till Ysabeth entered the room.

He gave the woman a venomous look before he turned away to sit down. With his hand he felt the aching chin where the fist of one guard had hit him.

[The Tower]

Ranian had learned that sister Ysabet was on his way from the two prisoners, so he hurried to leave his office and go to the tower. Climbed the steps covered the small hallway that divided the two cells present in that place, overcame the guards present outside, without noticing how many were and he knew where to find the two prisoners and the sister.

Good morning! Mother don't mind if I stay with you as you interrogate detainees?

He said those words slowly as if he struggled to put on that thought, because even committed to looking around, he saw that in the room there were only Adam and two nun

Graufang?

Churches looking at those present, but something else caught his attention that she not wait for reply

What happened to you?

She said pointing to his chin by Adam

Adam seemed upset as Ysabet entered the room. She wouldn´t have thought that the leaving of the old man affected him that much.
Ysabet sat down on the other side of the table with the nun besides her.

"I said the counsel has to be an Aristotelian faithful and faithful means baptised. I thought you knew that much. I know that Graufang Fugger isn´t baptised in the Holy, Aristotelian, Universal and Roman Church. That is why he can´t be here. Do you know anyone else or do you want to proceed without councel?"
After this words she showed him the document, which opened the trial, to satisfy the formalities.
Just in this moment the door opened and a woman stepped in. Ysabet remembered her from the meeting. She was kind of a guard, but she didn´t remember her name and thats why she just said:

"Good morning."
She listened to the surprised question of the women regarding Graufang.
"I asked the guards to bring Graufang to another cell, so I could interrogate Adam alone. It is usual that in the trial are just the Missus Inquisitionis, the accused and his council, if he wants one, present. "
Ysabet thought about it a few minutes, then she added:
But you can stay, if you promise not to interfere and to keep the things spoken in here secret.

With some minor injuries the patriarch was forced into another cell. There were way too many guards against the old man and even moore years which weigh upon the cleric. So the fight was quickly decided, even before Graufang realy could think to resist. A few powerless blows he could give to a guard and a lot of very un-clerical insults. But at the end he found himself on the floor of the other cell. With his bones unharmed but with a wounded pride. The years are long gone where he was able to match with another man.
Fear strikes into Graufangs heart. The fear that he could lose Adam. Not to the false religion but to fire or steel of the heretical church.

----------------------------

15. August 1461

Angst fährt in Graufangs Herz.
