The Colony of Bath

-fromENmeda181
Meda returned the hug, happy to see Amy smiling again, and followed her inside. She paused just inside the door, waving to the others.

"Thank you Amy. I just wanted to stop by and see how you're doing. And I brought you a gift." She handed Amy the carved wood. "My father made this, and I thought maybe you'd like it."

There was a knock on the door, and Meda stepped aside to let Amy answer. When her sister and nephew entered, Meda smiled and nodded a hello. Suddenly feeling a bit claustrophobic, she decided to take her leave. She gave Amy another hug, wished her well, and quickly dismissed herself.

How long have I been gone? Do the other castle maids at Llyn Alaw miss me?

What of my sister?

Questions zoomed through Bronwenellen's head as she wandered through the countryside. How long she had been walking, she knew not. 'Twas night- though she hadn't traveled much at all in her life, she knew that to escape the danger she was running from, 'twould be best to go at dark.

Up ahead was a light. A fire in the darkness, it stood out like a beacon.

They could be friendly...

In her naivety, Bronwen decided to approach the fire.

Big mistake.

Two burley men sat 'round the fire. A spit sat over the flames, roasting only God knew what. As she approached, the farthest man looked up.

Well, men, waddawe have 'ere? He grinned, and Bronwen noticed he only had three blackened teeth. She shivered, but decided to be friendly.

Goo'ay sirrahs, an' how might ye be? I be Bronwen. I's was a-passin' through 'ere, on me way to Bath. Could ye kind sirs point a lay-dee in the roight diy-rection? She curtsied to emphasize her point.

The man closest to her stood. Aye, chickee, we could. But ye know, livin' 'ere out in the woods, with no women to keep us company, we's sure a-hankering for some. He smiled in what Bronwenellen supposed was to be a friendly, disallarming smile.

She was not fooled. She backed away, slowly, then turned to dash off when she felt a rough hand on her arm.

Oi don't think so, darlin', he cooed. Immediately she felt a body behind her, and then another pair of rough hands unlacing the back of her stays.

No! she cried out.

Don't ye be foightin' now, luv, the first man said with menace. Or wee'll keell ye.

She froze, but her mind worked swiftly. If she could only reach the knife in her garter-

'Ey now, wot's this ye be carryin', lass? Too late. The man in front of her yanked her petticoats up, and saw the giant butcher's knife she'd stolen from the castle at Llyn Alaw. Bronwen felt her cheeks flush and her heart sink. But she would not allow herself to be beaten yet.

She slowly snaked her hands 'round to the crotch of the man behind her, in an effort to make him unable to have children-

Rats! He cought her hands. Now, now, lass, we're gonna make this pleasant for ye. Ye moight even have fun. An' if ye don't, worry not, luv- we will!

The man in front of her then ripped the butcher's knife from her garter, causing it to fall. With the blade, he ripped her dress wide open. She cried out in fright and horrid surprise as he felt in places only a husband should ever feel.

She cried out in pain and anguish when he took what only her future husband should have had. She cried out every time that night as the men took their pleasure from her, over and over and over and over...

Finally the men put her out of her misery.

She awoke several hours later, at dawn, sore, scared- and totally naked. They had taken the rags they'd reduced her clothing to, as well as her money and personal belongings.

She stood up gingerly- hurting horribly in places that should never hurt, she decided desperately- and searched the clearing for something- anything- to cover herself with. Nothing was there but the blood that was also running down her legs, a testiment of what those two men took that was irreplacable.

Ah! One had left a blanket- a ragged, torn, roughly-woven thin blanket, but something she could use to cover herself, nonetheless.

She walked, and the tears came. Finally, in the distance, she saw something.

Rats! 'Twas only an old Roman building. But wait- what was that? Was there a woman singing in that building? She crept closer. Aye, 'twas a woman singing in that building! Not singing just any song, but an old nursery rhyme Bronwen's mother had sang to her, called Pais Dinogad. If this woman spoke Welsh, she could only be good!

Bronwen crept into the building and sat while the woman sang:
Quote:
Pais Dinogad sydd fraith, fraith,
O groen y bela y mae'i waith.
`Chwí! Chwí!' Chwibanwaith.
Gwaeddwn ni, gwaeddant hwy - yr wyth gaeth.
Pan elai dy dad di i hela -
Gwaywffon ar ei ysgwydd, pastwn yn ei law -
Galwai ar gw+n tra chyflym,
`Giff! Gaff! Dal, dal! Dwg, dwg!'
Fe laddai bysgod o'i gwrwgl
Fel y llada llew fân-filod!
Pan elai dy dad di i'r mynydd
Deuai ef ag un iwrch, un twrch coed, un hydd,
Un rugiar fraith o fynydd,
A physgodyn o readr Derwennydd.
Beth bynnag a gyrhaeddai dy dad â'i bicell -
Boed yn dwrch, yn gath goed, yn lwynog -
Ni ddihangai'r un oni bai'n nerthol ei adenydd.

The tears came easier as Bronwen listened to the song. This woman even sang like her mother, sounded like her!

The woman came into veiw, and Bronwen's heart flipped over.

Rhiannon!
-fromENrhiannon
Rhiannon jumped when she heard her name called. She had come to the roman baths with the girls, thinking to have some "mommy-daughters" time.

Apparently that was not to happen.

She stood up with a baby on each hip, looking at the woman. Long, brown hair... but what the hell was she wearing?

"Who are you?"

A vision flashed through Rhiannon's head, of a woman with the same long brown hair... her mother.

I am Bronwenellen... and if you are indeed Rhiannon, I am your sister.

Rhiannon startled, then threw on her clothes and handed her robe to Bronwen.

"You look like my mother... we will discuss later. Now, to my home- I'll get you some real clothing and some food, and get you cleaned up."

At home, bathed and dressed and now sipping a bowl of steaming hot stew, Bronwen relayed her tale. Rhiannon was horrified.

In the kitchen, away from Bronwen, she called out the back door for a boy to go fetch Aunt Han. After Bronwen's ordeal, she'd need all the help she could get.

Bronwen looked at the woman quizically.

Ma'am, I yam fine in body, only sore... but methinks me mind will hurt for times to come. For ye see, ma'am, on the road here, two men took from me what I should've given to me husband, once I got married.

Bronwen looked at the two women.

Ye should hear the dark tale, sister Rhiannon, that I tell.

After givin' birth to ye, Mother did no' die. She tol' the other castle maids to tell that to ye, and she ran off. She knew ye could have a better life a-livin' there than where she was goin'.

Ye were a basterd, Rhiannon- methinks ye know that t' be true. But she was branded a whore. She knew ye would be labeled as such, but she knew where she was going wasn't safe- for you, or even for her. Rhiannon... she left for a bawdy house.

She watched the color drain from her new-found sister's face.

'Tis true. But the story doesn't end there.

She soon married one of the long-time customers who'd taken a liking to her. That was a big mistake. I came along, and then our brothers and sisters came along. And then he started beating us, every single one.

Mother's still there, Rhiannon... but she killed him and was hanged for it. All the children ran, but only I knew of ye. I know not where the rest of our family is, Rhiannon, but I am here, to make a new life for myself. Will ye help me, sister?
Gregarious
Gregarious walks to Arcanejills pig pens. She has an older piggie that just isn't growing. She has asked for him to take a look.

I think we'll take you home my friend, you are looking a little thin. Lets see if we can coax some growth out of you.

Well me piggies how are we today.

This is a friend of mine. I trust you will make him welcome my friends he's not been eating properly. Maybe you can coax some size out of him for me?

Well, my wedding plans have been made public, I am to wed Lady Sierrajane. We still have to get her families blessing and considering the present state of affairs between MY Sierra and her father, this may not be easy. I may have to go travelling as her family are all in Scotland.

Lady Abrianna has finally arrived as well. She is resting from her travels but I will be introducing you tomorrow. She has expressed a wish to meet you all, so, on your best behaviour. She may even wish to take one of the lil ones. I've promised her the pick of the litter if she so wishes.

Rhiannon appears to be upset with me? I hope not but she did leave the Tavern rather abruptly earlier tonight. I must send her an appology just incase. I did not mean any offense.

Well I have to get up in the morning as I've promised Lady Abrianna a viewing of the glade and I wish it to be spectacular so we will see it at sunrise to give it the best light. See the glade, come to see you, go to pay respects at the new statue. It will be a busy morning. Then she may be making preparations to leave immediately. So it may be a long day for her.

Well into the militia for the day. An honest days work for an honest days pay. then straight to bed.

Eat my friends, grow my pets, make me proud
-fromENrhiannon
Rhi sat, stunned, after Bronwen relayed her tale.

Her mother, a murderer... more brothers and sisters... where?

Llyn Alaw?

She looked towards Han, then back to Bronwen, not sure what to say or do.

Having returned home and rubbed down Thunder and bedded him for the eve and peeking in on the sheep, Ells headed up the wooded path to the cottage...the scent of venison stew still simmering over the dying embers of the fire greeted her nose and she suddenly felt ravenous in spite of her obvious haste to dispatch a messenger to Wiltshire she decided to stop and have a breade bowl of the stew before making arrangements.

Ells sank down on the window cushion and gazed out on the twilight enveloping the garden and the pathway in front of her cottage....sighing contentedly as she ate the rich hearty stew and sipped the heated cider..the tart of the apple refreshing and reviving her. Her mind lost in thought about the bottle and its note that she had placed on the mantel over the fire...

Hearing a Knock at the door, she rises and goes to see if indeed the messenger she asked Seamus to fetch had arrived and indeed Twas he.

I would have you go into Wiltshire at first light good man and bring me word of where Lord Garrathe is or was last heard of ....I bid you to be thorough in your search and I shall reward you accordingly.

Ells Presses several coins into his hand for his sustenance on his journey and stands in the darkening doorway as his horse trots down the path toward town....the soft glow of the rising harvest moon framing the lithe form of the Woman with cascading curls glinting coppery in the pale silvery light......

she looks upward and spies a bright star in the western sky....her lips form a gentle smile as she thinks perhaps to make a childish wish upon such.....
Gregarious
Oye,me head.

It's not yet light, good...good. Now, provisions. A light meal it's but a quick walk and then back to town.

Gregarious speeds about his cottage, gathering some food and drink for an early morning stroll.

I've got to collect Lady Abrianna, then it's to the glen. 1/2 hour 45 minutes to get there enjoy the glory of the sun rise, and back again. Well make it an hour then we can eat a proper breakfast while we are there I think she would like that eh Parceval?

Gregarious has a 6 week piglet following at his heel

And you my friend, what will she make of you?

Alright so if we eat at the glade, then we wont arrive back until half and hour or so after sunrise. Then we should see the statue and finally she may come here to meet me piggies and you of course eh!

Alright. I think I'm ready. Perhaps once the tour is over we can have lunch at the tavern and the Lady can meet whom ever she needs to there to finalize her days work. Com-on Parceval let's take a walk.

Sierra looked at herself thoughtfully in her bedchamber mirror. She was engaged to be married. My, things had moved along so quickly! She and Gregarious had not met that long ago but they quickly became close—very close. Some may have thought they were being impetuous and at first she might have agreed with them. Now the thought of not having Greg in her life was unimaginable! She longed to be a good wife for him and hoped he would never be disappointed in his choice.

There were so many things to plan for the big day. Meda had agreed to be her Maid of Honor and Lady Abrianna had agreed to stand up for Greg. It might be a bit unconventional, but given how Greg felt about her, it made perfect sense.

Sierra looked at the few meager items in her closet and sighed. Obviously a new dress would need to be made for the wedding. Even drastic alterations to the garments she already owned would never do. She made a mental note to sit down with Meda and discuss possible colors for dresses. Her purse was feeling quite light. How would she pay for the material?

Greg had already picked out the location for the ceremony. She had not seen it yet, but by his description, it sounded lovely. A few flower wreaths for decoration and maybe some candles and it would be perfect! It wasn’t the season for cherry blossoms. Greg would be disappointed.

Sierra brow furrowed and she sighed heavily. She was not looking forward to making a trip to Scotland. She desperately missed her family but she feared her father’s wrath. He was a powerful man and not one to be crossed. Hopefully, he would not take out his anger on Gregarious. But she really wasn’t sure what to expect.

Where had Troy gone? Their brief meeting a couple weeks ago reminded her how much she missed her older brother. He might be back home by now. He would be the key to a relatively peaceful homecoming. Perhaps she should attempt to write to him first to determine the atmosphere back home. It was a start at least.
-fromENAbrianna
Abri woke with a start. She peered outside,….afraid that she had slept too long. “Tis still dark.” Very well,… she must rise and begin to get ready for Gregarious to show.

She could barely wait to see the setting he has chosen. A wedding ceremony,….. the thought made Abrianna giggle as if she were a child again. “How wonderfully happy they are, and Lady Sierrajane is so very sweet. What a lovely couple they are together.”

Bailey lazily watches Abri as she rushes about, trying to eat a few pieces of fruit while brushing out the wrinkles in her skirt. She pulls her hair back in a plain ribbon, pulls the laces of her gown tight, and heads for the kitchen. In a flash, Bailey is on his feet and lingering toward her, anxiously awaiting a few pieces of meat for his breakfast. Abri makes him a plate and sets it down, and refills a bowl with fresh water for him.

“You must stay here alone for just a little while today Sweetie. Mama will be taking a small tour of a few places with a good friend of hers, and it is best you stay here. I will return for you before too long, and maybe you can come to the tavern with me and we will all share a lunch. Then later, maybe we will stop at his home and see his little piggies. I understand that he has baby piglets there,….I bet they are just darling.”

Abri leans down to wrap her arms around her over-sized pup, and suddenly his ears perk up and he turns to face the door.

“Oh,…that must be him Bailey. Now you be good,…I will be home as soon as I can.”

Abri kisses Bailey on the nose, and grabs her shoes. On her way to the door, she picks up a basket of fruit to take along for the walk. As she approaches the door,..she peeks through a small window, and sees Gregarious. And there is a small animal trailing behind him. "Oh Bailey,...he has a little one with him!"

Ah m'lady you are ready and radiant if I may be so bold.

looking behind him he reaches round to pick something up

Lady Abrianna might I introduce Parceval.
Now Bailey, be good.

We should be getting a start it is not far but I do not want you to miss the Sun Rise. The colours this time of year, they are spectacular.

Gregarious keeps up a constant chatter as he is want to do at times, especially when agitated or happy. Rounding the final bend in the trail they only have to wait a few moments before it is time for him to hold back the same branch Rhiannon had held back for him a short time before.

Abrianna is afforded her first view of the glade as the Sun Crests the Eastern horrison.

Iwent and looked for some plates and found some. I then took the food and put them on the plates. I served the food and sat down after getting some silverware. Would you like to say grace?
Rosalynn
A smile crosses her lips at the question of saying grace and she nods, "Yes, I would be happy to do so." She bows her head and clasps her hands as she prays, "Bless this food, Lord that it may nourish us this day. Amen." Finished with her short but apt prayer, she gets to her feet and after filling two tall glasses one with ale and one with milk, she returns to the table and sits down again.

"If I eat like I'm starving tis only because the babes think they are, all the time," she laughs. "I can't imagine why though as I seem to be eating all the time when awake." Rosalynn stops speaking as she hears the commotion out in the foyer and as usual with her, curiosity wins out and she goes to see what is going on.
