The Colony of Bath

Arcanejill
Walking around the corner of Gregarious' house, ArcaneJill was, quite literally, stopped in her tracks by someone jumping at her. Gasping and stepping backwards, she almost slugged him with her basket before she heard "Hey Jill!" Stopping to reassess, she realized it was Sparhawk!
"Sparhawk! We didn't expect you back so soon! Welcome home!" She gave him a hug and a quick kiss on the cheek. "You know you scared the bejesus out of me?!"
Sparhawk laughed and nodded. She hit him on the arm playfully. "I saw you having a conversation with the little piggies too..." he said.
ArcaneJill blushed and stammered. Changing the subject quickly, she said, "Greg's not here. You know about what happened to Sierra?"
"Probably more than you do."
She nodded thoughtfully. He saw her basket and said. "Come on, I'll walk you home and tell you what I know, and you can fill me in on all the town gossip."
She raised an eyebrow at him. "And no more sneak attacks?"
"Well, not today at least..."
Gregarious
Well me piggies, I wonder how you are today?

Another long day, more rain, some snow! I'm not sure it can get any more miserable. The country is getting more rocky. I must be closing in on Scotland finally.

I have seperated from the Knights fo the Realm column. Apparently the threat of war with Scotland has been dealt with. The knights are no longer mustering and turned back. I took my leave and will continue with my quest alone. It is likely for the best. I have provisions and am close to my ultimate destination.

I'm now staying away from habitation as much as possible as I do not know when I will cross into Scotland and I have no idea the reception an Englishman would receive anyway.

I stopped at a small church this morning it was set away from the road and away from settlement. It had been a while since I'd been able to pray properly. I pray before my sword every day and evening, but it was good to see a real cross. I was able to confess and I left 1 in 10 of the coins I had left as thanks. I prayed for guidance. I believe that my prayers may have been answered. I've received a letter from Dianna. It was most unexpected and I have no idea how the messanger found me but none the less it gives me an alternative to battle. Perhaps I can prevent this disaster without bringing destruction in my wake.

There was one interesting thing about the little church. The lintle over the door was carved to resemble an owl.

Eat my friends, grow my pets, make me proud

We will be home soon I promise.

Bam! Bam! Bam! Sierra grabbed the sides of her head instinctively. She opened her eyes and looked around when the sound stopped. Her hand brushed against something on her head. She felt around and found it went completely around her head. Of course, a bandage! She had forgotten about the blood and the fall. How long ago did that happen? Everything had a fuzzy haze to it...

The door banged open and in walked Vanessa with a tray of food. She glanced at Sierra briefly and then looked again when she saw a pair of eyes looking back.

“You’re awake! You gave us all such a scare!”

Sierra smirked at the idea of Vanessa being concerned over her welfare. “How long have I been laying here?”

“Three and a half days. The men have been hammering and yelling every one of ‘em, but you barely stirred.”

Sierra suddenly realized the roll of the ocean was gone. She looked out the port hole and saw the crew working on the side of the ship. Asa was among them eating his dinner and shouting orders in between bites. Sierra shook her head, then moaned and grabbed it with both hands.

“The head still hurts quite a bit!”

“And it will for a while. You took quite a hit on the head. Asa found you here on the floor with a little puddle of blood. He keeps coming in and asking about you. Up till now, I didn’t have much to tell him.”

Sierra looked at Vanessa thoughtfully. Had she misjudged this woman? It seemed like there was a note of concern in her voice. As if Vanessa could hear Sierra’s thoughts, she turned away abruptly and began preparing a plate of food for each of them. Sierra’s stomach began rumbling at the sight of the bread and salted meat. She began eating greedily and had to force herself to slow down so as not to appear rude.

Heavy footsteps came down the stairs and the door swung open and banged against the side wall.

“I just came in to get something to drink. How is she….” Asa stopped in front of the bed and starred at Sierra for a moment. His lips curled into a grin and a look of relief washed over his face.

“You scared me, girl! Don’t do that to me ever again—at least until we’re married.”

“Why Asa! Don’t tell me you’ve found a soft spot for me in your heart?” Sierra asked in mock sincerity.

Asa looked back with a twinkle in his eye. “Heavens, no! I just sent a message to my father telling him to begin preparations for the wedding. I can’t very well marry you and seal the deal between our families if you’re dead, now can I?” He laughed and took a sip of ale.

Sierra glared back at his response then turned her back to him.

“Vanessa, make sure she gets her strength back. Can’t have her fainting at the church!” He laughed all the way back up the stairs to the upper deck.

She deserved that. Expecting anything else was foolishness. She watched him go back to his overseer post outside. He spoke briefly to his first mate. She overheard him mention the Isle of Man. Her face fell. The storm had thrown them off course but they still were getting very close to Scotland. Maybe…maybe if it took long enough for the repairs…

“Ready the sails!” Asa’s shout broke into her thoughts. Asa turned and spotted her spying on him.“Don’t worry, dear. You shan’t have to wait much longer to be my blushing bride!” He winked at her with a knowing look. Suddenly Sierra felt sea sick and they were not even on the open water yet.

Scotland loomed ahead…a land she loved and dreaded all at once.

I took Jill's free arm into my own and we both talked about what had happened since I was gone and then talked on what I did over in Scottland. It had seemed that we had been walking and talking for hours. I started to push her playfully into bushes as we had past. I would laugh as I did and she grinned at me. When we were about to get to a mud puddle on the ground she tripped me face first into the mud. Then she walked across me saying how gentleman like that was. I got up and grinned. All you could see was my teeth and eyes looking back at her. Oh really ya like to play that way I see. She nodded and then ran away from me. I chased after her, though I was faster than her she would dodge from side to side evading my grasp. Finally she had stumpled on I rock and I got her by the arm. I brought her against me getting some of the mud all over her. I grabbed the basket out of her hand and gave her a kiss on her cheek getting mud on her face too. I let go of Jill smiling as I did noticing that I had gotten her good. So ya think you should do that again aye? She smiles at me. I smiled back not knowing what she was going to do next when it was too late and she tackled me right down to the ground laughing all the while....
Gregarious
It has been a short ride this day, not yet noon when Gregarious comes across a man with two young children a boy and a girl walking along the road. Gregarious dismounts as the man does not appear to be dangerous with two children and Gregarious does not wish to alarm them. The boy shows a great deal of interest in Gregarious sword, the girl is enchanted with his horse. Gregarious also shows the boy the spear that Meda has given to him and how he has fashioned a slip knot so that it can be slung over his shoulders across his back and still be released relatively quickly for use. Eventually they turn up a fork towards a small home. Turning a curve in the road Gregarious loses sight of the small company and is therefore taken by suprise. A small man with a sharp nose is standing in the middle of the road. He is unarmed and unmoving.

An owl calls in the trees.

Would you be Gregarious of Bath? I have a message for you.

Aye I am he.

An owl thats odd? Gregarious also hears a scuffing of stones from behind him. Instincts and training take over. He has practised the moves hour upon hour in the Family DeBalboa barracks. Pulling his sword from the saddle he gives the messanger a quick glance to see him smiling, turns sideways to present as small a target as possible and swings the sword in a low flat arch to catch his attacker in the midriff, just below the ribs, assuming him to be of average height. Gregarious is satified with the feel as the blade bites deep into his unknown assailant, but it is short lived. As his blade makes contact Gregarious feels a blow upon his back like the hammer of Thor and hears a sickening snap. As he falls to the ground and loses consciousness he sees the fox faced man start towards him.

Laughing as Sparhawk landed in the grass, ArcaneJill seated herself beside him. Not only was he covered in mud, he now had dried grass and leaves stuck to him. "You look like a poor man's scarecrow!"

"I don't feel like a poor man."

She glanced at him sideways, blushed, and picked at the grass by her feet. He plucked a small white flower and stuck it to the mud in her hair. He grinned.

They had always been friendly, but they'd never spent much time together. She'd had such fun today! Still... Did this mean that he...? Or that she...? She'd never thought of him that way. But the playful fighting reminded her of how children try to "hide" their affections toward each other.

He was still looking at her. She looked up and could see her house from here, and the sun setting behind it. "I'd best be getting home. It's almost dark."

"Aye, that's probably best."

He got up, mud and leaves falling off him, and gave her a hand up. They headed off toward her house, a bit more quietly this time. Her, confused and deep in thought. And him.. she didn't know. Thoughtful, perhaps, or perhaps just tired from traveling.

I was really tired and having come back, had relaxed me quiet a bit. The only thing that really made me happy though was being near Jill. I would look over to her every so often, not to talk but just to look at her features. For some reason I couldn't stop looking at her. She was so beautiful. I was awakened out of my trance by her voice. "Sparhawk, we are here at my house." I looked over to her house and nodded. Hopefully we could do this again, it was a lot of fun. "Yes it was and we should." She gives me a wicked little smile. I smile back and we walked up to her door. I gave her one last hug and then opened the door for her. She slowly steps by me going inside, then turns around as if to say something but then turns back and heads inside. If you like I could meet you at my tavern or we could eat at my place sometime soon? She only nodded and said. "That would be nice." She smiled then went fully into her house. I closed the door slowly. When the door was fully shut I let out a sigh. I put my hands in my pockets and started walking home. Thinking of how the day had gone and of Jill...oh Jill. I got home and it was already dark. I heard my cows mooing in the barn and the pigs on Greg's side sqeekin back. I layed down on my bed and fell asleep, but not a very good sleep where I woke up several times.....

ArcaneJill sat on at stool in her house for... she didn't know how long before she realized she was staring at the embers of a fire and still quite muddy. Stripping off her clothes, she tossed them in the corner and wrapped up in a blanket. She stirred the fire and put some water on to heat for bathing. Letting down her muddied hair, she noticed a small white flower fluttering to the ground. She picked it up, placed it on the table, and smiled...

When I woke up in the morning I made myself some bacon, biscuits, and drank some milk. In the middle of eating my food I got a knock at the door. I got up and went over to the door seeing a little boy with a message. He told his message, handed the letter to me then walked away. I read the letter after he left to make sure nothing was left out and for my personal self. I went to my front porsh and sat in my chair smoking on my pipe. I looked around Bath from my chair like I always did. I was well rested again smelling the fresh air all around me. I smiled watching people and going into memory as always. After about a hour I got up and went inside to pack...again. I put clean slothes in my packs, got my sword and shield, and then put them on my horse. I looked around, then got on my horse. I had my horse in a slow trot heading over to Jill's house to say goodbye, even though our effections for each other had just come into light. I had to make sure my sister came back safely and was going to be alright after the medication. After about a half hour I got to Jill's house. I got off my horse, tied him up to a post nearby and looked at her house. I slowly walked up to the door and knocked...
Gregarious
Someone is laughing? That is a sound I hadn't expected to hear again. Or any sound for that matter.

Gregarious' back ached. Opening his eyes slightly he can see he is in a small cottage. A lady is tending a cauldron over the fire and he can see two children. It appears to be day as light is slanting in through the shutters.

Meda?

Ah you're awake. You gave Stanley a fright you did.

The young lady approaches the bed that Gregarious is resting in.

My name is Gennevieve. You have met my husband the other day on the road as well as my children. How is your wound? Does it hurt much?

Gregarious can feel a great deal of pain in his back and looking down can see his ribs are covered in a poultice of some sort. Looking about the room he can see his goods set near to the bed. His pack, the sword and his provisions.

All your goods are here. I'm afraid that your spear will not be of much use to you though.

The spear is laying on the ground beside his sword but the shaft has been shattered. Oh Meda? I'm so sorry.

Gregarious dryly croaks, How? What happened?

Well the way Stanley tells it he was returning home when Steel, that is our son , ran off back towards the road. Stanley was just coming back onto the road when he saw a man attack you from behind with a club. He delivered a brutal blow and Stanley was sure he had killed you but in the same instant you took the man in the gut with your sword. The brigand is dead. To Stanley's and our great relief though, you are not.

I am fairly certain you have cracked ribs good sire. Can you sit up?

Gregarious struggles to sit up. He loses his breath and the pain is intense, but he is able to struggle to a propped up position leaning his back against the wall which is thankfully cool. Gennevieve smiles and mops Gregarious' brow with a damp cloth.

Did he see a second man?

Stanley said nothing of a second man. Who was he?

I don't know.

After leaving St Cross, where she had sat with Amy for several hours, Bronwen walked through town to Kuku's smithy, searching for him.
Quote:
At the tavern
Kukupet

She found him quick enough, sitting in the corner. As soon as she entered, the tavern half exploded- people jumped up and rearranged themselves. When 'twas all said and done, Bron noticed that Kuku had not moved, but was motioning towards a seat that had been previously occupied. She grinned, sat, and ordered a cup of tea, lying back into Kuku.

Awhile later, something caught her eye as Kuku passed something to Ang. Something shiney...

Kuku, what do ye have there?
Consider this informal, but will you accept it? Kuku then slid it onto Bronwen's ring finger- a silver engagement ring.

There was suddenly not enough air in the room...
She gave her answer then, but waited to show it until later that night...
Arcanejill
Arcanejill awoke to a persistent knocking on the door. Mumbling something about it being way too early for visitors, she padded across the room. She opened the door to find Sparhawk... and then became acutely aware she was wearing nothing but a blanket. She noticed he had the same traveling attire as he did yesterday and his horse was tied outside. Their houses were not so far apart as to need a horse's transport. It could only mean one thing.

"Hello," he said, "I came to tell you.."

"You're leaving? Already? But you just got back yesterday!"

He nodded and told her of where he was going and why. She couldn't help but agree it was necessary. Amy had been ill lately and it was his duty to take care of her.

"You... You'll be back soon?"

The moon peeked through the clouds and illuminated the deck of the Zephyr. Asa stood silently navigating the ship through the black waters. Only a few mates accompanied him at this late hour of the night. Many had gone below deck to get a few hours of sleep before the busy day tomorrow. Asa admired Sierra’s womanly figure standing at the helm. The moonlight outlined her silhouette and her hair danced in the breeze. She had her back to him and was staring out into the ocean. They had finally been blessed with a window of good weather and Sierra took advantage of it to enjoy some fresh air. It was an ungodly hour, but she could always take a nap during the day.

Sierra grabbed the rail til her knuckles turned white as she searched the darkness for what she knew lay before her. The moon kept hiding in and out of the clouds but would occasionally shine upon the ever closer land mass in the distance. Scotland. They would reach it by morning. Then the land travel would begin. It would probably take another 3 days by land to get to the Sutherland castle. Her chances of making a break for it would be much greater. Asa probably had already thought of that, but she still would watch for an opportunity.

She heard footsteps and a presence standing behind her. Asa rested his hands on her shoulders. He felt her muscles tense beneath his touch. He laughed and spun Sierra around. Before she knew what was happening, Asa has pressed his lips against her and began search for an opening with his tongue. Sierra squirmed out of his grasp and laid the full measure of her hate upon his face with her hand.

Asa’s eyes flew open in shock and then slowly melted into rage. He grabbed Sierra by the arm and slapped her across the face as hard as he could. Sierra stumbled back and fell onto the deck. Spots of light flickered on and off in her vision. Her face stung like it was burned by a flame.

“Don’t you EVER raise a hand to me again, you bloody whore! Next time you may not live to speak of it!”

Sierra crouched on the deck until Asa had walked away. She then ran down the stairs and into her room. As soon as she shut the door the tears flooded her cheeks and stained her dress. She flung herself upon her bed and cried bitter tears until she fell into a fitful slumber.
