The Colony of Bath

ellsbeth
The familiar sights of home soon began to dot the landscape as Ells and Thundered trotted down the wooded paths toward the cottage nestled at the wood's edge. She had long since veered off the main road, choosing instead to make her way homeward through the woods she had grown up in and loved so dearly.

It warmed her heart to see the trees beginning to show the first signs of blossom and tightly furled spring green leaves. Ahhh Springtime is just around the corner. A time when everything old is new again. A time of birth and a time of new beginnings!

Her time away from her friends and family while travelling had left her longing to see their faces once more. She could hardly wait to get her hands on the screaming lil bundles of laughter that were her neice and nephew! She could just imagine how much they had grown and what mischief they would be capable of now that they were able to get about on their knees.

And this evening she intended to make her way to the Tavern and spend a lovely night of laughter and kinship as she missed such while travelling. It would be delightful to see Spar and Jill, Sierra and Diana, Sir Wins and Noresor and of course her devilish Brother and his lovely wife, Saj and Rosa and well just everyone.

Ells knew Seamus had taken great care of her fields and cottage but she did want to stop by and see if she could perhaps find Gregarious at home before she arrived home. She had left him a letter upon her departure and had not received a missive in reply during her travels, of course her travels had lasted longer than she intended and taken her places she could not have imagined. Nonetheless Ells needed to see him and they needed to speak.

The fiery haired Lass slowed Thunder by the stream and let him drink deeply from the cold bubbling waters. She spied a splash of rich buttery yellow beneath the Large oak nearby and smiled with delight at the blossoming jonquils peeking their heads out of the earth there.

Ells slipped from Thunder's glossy black back and slipped over to the oak to steal a few blossoms and tuck them into her mop of unruly crimson curls. She took a deep breath of the wonderfully scented air of the woods and twirled like a lil girl under the canopy of branches above that let in the dappled sunlight that bathed her in a lacy light.

She could almost Swear that Thunder was laughing with her when he bared his teeth and whinnined at his Mistress dancing in the midday sun.

Yes Thunder I know... Tis quite silly for me dancing about like a faery in the glade

Ells laughed merrily as she made her way back to the great beast drinking from the stream once more.

a faint sound of a cracking twig caught her ear and she turned toward the noise.......
Tweetygirl
tweety sat in her yard looking out at her wheat field and how good it was growing. life is good she thought looking out. she never thought she would reach this stage where she could be this happy and stong again. she had been through some sad times but it had made her all the stronger. she was happy and had found a very good friend in wins, it was for the best she mused to herself, laughing lightly at her life. her best friend alexxis was getting married in winchester and she would be leaving soon to journey there. wow, she thought, i have never left bath, should be a very interesting time, at least i will have some company with wins, thats if he doesnt get drunk !!! she said laughing to herself. but all in all her life was wonderful, she had her field and was to be promoted in the army{i hope father is proud}, getting up she decide to go into town to see what everyone was up to
Gregarious
Gregarious was disappointed that the dance was over so quickly. It had been ages since he had spied Ellsbeth and then this morning as he returned from patrol to Salisbury, there she was entering Bath ahead of him. She however was on horseback and it had taken time to catch up. As he was about to announce himself she had broken into dance.

Ellsbeth was exuberant this is true, but she rarely was out of control. Here she had let go to pure joy and Gregarious hadn't the heart to interrupt. Once she was done he shifted his weight intentionally snapping a twig on the ground so she would know someone was coming and entered the glad.

Well m'lady where have you been then?
ellsbeth
Ells Jumps with a start as a deep voice breaks the silence of the forest around her...

her cheeks warm and pinken as she turns glittering eyes upon of all people...
Gregarious.

Not usually being one at a loss for words she finds herself opening her mouth and nothing escapes her lips for a moment as her eyes meet his and she sees the twinkle of merriment in his.

M'Lord! I ...I...well....you see....

Ells is utterly flustered....

She tosses her curls at last and puts her hands on her hips....

WHAT WERE YOU DOING SPYING ON ME????

her sparkling sapphire eyes narrow and fix on his.....

inside her stomach churns with giddy nervousness but her face never gives that away as she stands her ground awaiting an answer....

Gregarious
Spying?

M'lady I was not spying, I have but just arrived. I spied a suspicious looking rider in long dark cloak skulking about the edges of Bath as I returned from patrol and decided to investigate.

Imagine my surprise and shear delight in discovering it is the long lost Ellbeth returned from her journeys. it is good to see you even if you must scowl at me. Why I haven't even thought about eating an orange since you left. I am reduced to juggling grapes in the taverns at night. Do you know the worry your letter left me in young lady?

Gregarious smiles widely at Ellsbeth's momentary look of confusion.

It is good to have you home Ells, I missed you.
ellsbeth
What??? No Oranges in my absence M'Lord?? Why surely you shall perish of Scurvy

Ells tries to keep a straight face and fails miserably as she begins to laugh...

Grapes eh? You spend your nights tossing grapes about? Oh My you have been left to your own devices for far too long methinks...and the Spiders? Have you rallied them into an army yet? Dare I visit the tavern?

Ells Looks over to Thunder who has found some tender grass by the stream and is munching happily.

Tis well enough I suppose that you have found me here in the wood as Thunder and I were about to head over to your house before you so rudely interrupted me

Once more Ells tries to don an angry glare and the merriment in her eyes gives that away at once...

The lass in the verdant green skirts and the rich cocoa brown cloak moves toward the ebony horse...loose curls spilling down her back and reflecting the gold among the crimson...she turns...

I have not much along with me save some Crusty bread and Ripe cheese and a few apples M'Lord but I daresay it can serve as a makeshift picnic if you have the time to share a bite with me??

Ellsbeth reaches for the woolen blanket strapped behind the saddle and begins to tug the straps awaiting his reply.....
Gregarious
It's not much but I have some meat from my trip to Winchester and I ahve some fruit that I was able to purchase there. It was out of my grant but I will make the shortfall good out of my personal funds. I'd be happy to share with you m'lady.

Places the travel rations and a few oranges purchased in Winchester out to be shared with Ellsbeth.
ellsbeth
Ellsbeth laughs merrily as they spread the blanket, Greg anchors it handily with the use of a few larger rocks he spied at the edge of the stream. Their easy banter born of a long friendship went on and on as they got settled.

The Ebony beast had had his fill of the cool bubbling waters of the stream and was still nibbling the tender spring grass nearby keeping a watchful eye upon his mistress.

At last the provisions were settled and the fiery haired lass and her companion were seated on the blanket and breaking bread in the early spring air that had but just a nip of chill still in it.

Ells was sinking her teeth into the succulent flesh of a bright green apple as between laughs at Greg's tales of the tavern that she had missed for near a fornight now. The Sun's light danced between the canopy of branches above and produced an ever moving magical light show on the ground around them.

As Greg wound down...Ells looked up and asked...

And you M'Lord? How have YOU been? So much you have not mentioned....it seems odd...so do tell...if of course I may be so bold to inquire.....
Gregarious
Gregarious looks puzzled momentarily.

Myself?

Well, I hadn't really thought about myself. I have been promoted to lieutenant of Bath in Sparhawks absence. I was the Chief Marshall of Bath as well for a while. But I resigned to be able to escort Sir Martur on his last ride across England and am just now getting home from that trip.

Ellsbeth is attentive but seems unsatisfied with these responses.

I..? I am no longer engaged to Lady Sierra. Something happened on the way back from Scotland. I cannot explain it. My emotions seemed to shut down. I keep replaying killing the brigand on the road to Scotland. I've never killed anyone Ells. Never.....killed anyone before at least.

Gregarious' face becomes cold and his eyes stony.

Then the baptism! The light, the colours, the power. I could feel something calling to me but I couldn't reach out to it. Something held me back. I'm lost. I can bury myself in work. I talk to me piggies, but it doesn't sooth any more. I work the SAS hard to distract myself and to wear myself out. But my mind will not rest. Somethings wrong Ells.

I don't know what to do?

Gregarious goes silent and lays on his back staring into the sky.
ellsbeth
Ells finds herself drawn into his tale...she smiles warmly as she notes the proud look in his eyes as he shares his promotions in the SAS and his work as a Marshall. She always knew he would advance quickly as he had the wit and the intelligence to become more than perhaps he himself even believed.

A quizzical look furrowed her brow as she noted the change in facial expression as he continued speaking. She had never seen such a cold look in his eyes before and she felt chilled to the soul as she realized the toll that having to take another man's life had taken on the once carefree vivacious man she had known. She lowered her eyes as it was almost too painful to stare into his as he continued to share.

She smiled softly as he relayed his Baptismal experience and took some comfort from learning Jah was of some solace to him at the very least.

At last he finished sharing the frustrations and pain he had pent up and Ells watched as he rolled over and faced the sky...the look on his face wrenching her heart....

She reached out a hand and brushed the hair from his eyes tenderly...and spoke in almost a whisper...

I am sorry...so very sorry for all that has come to pass and the pieces of your heart that have been strewn in the wind.....

Dont give up....Dont believe there is no hope regaining what you have lost...perhaps not in the same forms...Things can be right again for you ...I know that in my heart....

Dont let go of your dreams....Dreams are the only place you can escape to, to get a chance to leave a place behind that you may not want to return to, and go to a place you wish you could never leave. They are a way of letting you hold onto the things reality made you let go of....

I know....I have those dreams....too.

Her voice trailed off....and she found herself reaching out and touching his hand....
Gregarious
Gregarious eyes refocus and his countenance softens visible at Ellsbeth's touch.

Ahh, the mulling of an old woman. Disregard that Ells. I am fine really.

Gregarious gives Ellsbeth's hand a quick squeeze to reassure.

Jah willing everything will be for the best. I wish we had a confessor in town though. Perhaps that would easy my mind on one point at least. Or a good wench in the taverns at night. That might easy my mind as well.

Gregarious winks and smiles at Ellsbeth.

I came to a realization while you were gone. I miss the Soldiers Tavern, I miss the old crowd, I miss the conversation and the games, the jokes and tricks. I miss Lady Nemesis and BFP, Varnifane and Lords I miss Meda. But most of all while you were away.

I missed you Ellsbeth.

Gregarious lifts Ellsbeth's hand to his lips and kisses it lightly. Then taking her hand in both his he leans his head forward and holds her hand to his forehead closing his eyes.

I ride back into town heading straight to my house tired of seeing stupid family members. I couldn't wait to get back into my own house. I thought to myself that I needed a good cold beer. Yes a good nice lovely bubbling beer. I pass by the market which seemed nothing had changed, but still looked fun all in all. Pass by a couple houses and seeing Greg's house and my house in the distance. OOOOO house yes house. Going to go to the tavern tonight yes. I got to the front of my house and didn't see Greg at all. He wasn't talking to his pigs which surpised me. I tied up my horse and stepped up the stairs to the house stomping loudly so Jill could hear me come in....
Arcanejill
Jill looked up from her mending, which she was getting quite tired of. Someone with heavy steps was coming up the stairs to the door. She wished Spar was here to answer the door, in case it was someone coming to try and coerce her into making town policy to his/her advantage again. Her heart jumped into her throat as the visitor did not knock, simply started to open the door. Either it was a very angry citizen or it was her very own husband home at last - a happening almost too much to hope for!
ellsbeth
Ells smiles gently and a wistful look crosses her eyes as Greg reminisces about days past in Bath...the tavern nights...those who have moved on beyond the confines of the town...fond fond memories...

She tilts her head and looks deeply in his eyes even as he brushes aside his previous shared pain....the fond memories are not enough to chase away the horrific memories he has...not alone....

She cant help but chuckle as he mentions a wench in the taverns...oh the long road she has travelled since her arrival in Bath....

her cheeks pinken and her eyes soften as he expresses he has missed her....

Sapphire eyes warm as He places her hand on his forhead....she reaches with her other to touch his grizzled cheek gently....

I missed you too...I was afraid we were but destined to miss one another in this life......perhaps Jah has other plans after all.....twas all but impossible to call you friend when thou knew as well as I over time the seed of friendship had blossomed into more...in silence..in the dark...both denying....

her voice trails off....as her hand falls from his cheek to the folds of her skirts....a stray chestnut curl falls across her cheek as she treasures a moment she never dared even dream of....
